I.
It is 20 hours past midnight and spring blooms away after a perfect start to the week, at least weather-wise. It is of course time to shake off everything that might’ve dusted you today, as it is our New Muses Monday. Danno here, studio 2, GFN HQ, watching the records spin as the earth doth bloom, and tonight is cherry blossomed into posterity as March 27, 2023. Lots of good new tunes to get through tonight as we have new singles and albums out from all over the geographic and stylistic map, with Benny Sings, Caroline Rose, and The Japanese House being highlights. Hour 2 we start all the Poppin Off with a new album just out from BTS’ Jimin, and we also have other big time cuts to give a whirl after that. Part 4 before 10, we had a notably slow week in Korean indie & bubbling under K-pop, so gonna go with a bit of a recap to close the show, but great stuff if you haven’t gotten acquainted. Right now though, it’s time to blow out the candles for a Smashing Pumpkin, wishing all the best tonight, tonight. This is The Drop.
The Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight, Tonight
Back on The Drop, and into our New Muses weekly turn of the records for the record hath commenced, and as always a LOT to do for the full two hours this evening. Danno here, blowing out the candles to start the show at GFN HQ, that was The Smashing Pumpkins with Tonight, Tonight.
A big tune from 1995’s classic Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness, which we’ll talk more on in a bit, but not prior to wishing James Iha a very happy albeit somewhat belated 55th birthday. The co-founder of the Pumpkins remains active with the band and has also produced records for the likes of Marilyn Manson, Michael Stipe, and Isobell Campbell.
Of course, in the studio for Mellon Collie, the Chicago band was really pushing rather far outside their comfort zone musically, which is something Corgan and Iha were very conscious of doing. The album ended up being a gem, conceptually representing day & night on the separate records.
Happy birthday to James Iha, may there be many more, a true Chicago original.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
Next block, we start the new stuff post haste with The Japanese House the way (and no, that’s not some reference to Mr. Iha’s ethnicity, fair listener), and we’ll complete our first triangle tonight with some magic camels and Caroline Rose. We’ll discuss all of these and those and thems after the audio sorcery goes up & comes back down, but let’s hit play right now. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
_________

The Drop continues, stretching to the end of the first fourth of tonight’s radiological orchestra. Danno here opening the cellophane in our collective consciousness after a glorious Monday, so hope you got to enjoy the sunshine because everybody love it. As to what just went up to Saturn in that first block of fresh new cuts, that was…
The Japanese House – Boyhood (…kind of crazy to think that 2019’s Good At Falling Down was the debut record for this group, and now we have a new single as of last Friday. This is the project of British singer-songwriter Amber Bain, the artist’s first new music of this year, and just a standalone for now.)
iiis feat Dromedario Magicos – Futuro Incierto (…now, I must point out this band (sp.) is pronounced ay ay ays, and is an experimental group out of Mexico. Much like the title, which translates as uncertain future, most of the song features lonely and even paranoid ruminations reflecting that state.)
Caroline Rose – Everywhere I Go I Bring the Rain* (…back in March 2020, Rose put out an album called Superstar that was set to make them exactly that. The pandemic that set in right about the same time both put the kibosh on that and threw Rose’s life into chaos. Now, we have the follow-up album to that, The Art of Forgetting, encapsulating the feeling of experiencing recent memories, having them turn into old ones and then ultimately forgetting those memories altogether.)
Now, a couple of big new tunes out this weekend were the latest singles from Sharon Van Etten & The National, the former just releasing a tune called This Is Too Right, which features on a newly released deluxe anniversary edition of Van Etten’s 2012 album Tramp, so go check that out. Not out yet is The National’s upcoming LP First Two Pages of Frankenstein, although the latest teaser single is, and our final tune is called Eucalyptus, the album drops April 28. (recap) THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.

The National – Eucalyptus

II.
The Drop is back after the first quarter jump and we are continuing with our favorite new tunes for this week’s Monday night meal, but simmering it down for here in part 2, as we of course are wont to do. Danno here making the donuts as shiny as the display case as they spin ever so tenderly, and that was our first pair for the 2nd quarter, so let’s get some details going...
Lana Del Rey feat Father John Misty – Let The Light In (…just out this weekend is this dreamsicle of an album from Lana Del Rey called Did You Know There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. Featuring a slew of collaborations, this album is certainly one to give a front-to-back listen this weekend if you haven’t already, really a glimmering work that we’ll get another taste of in part 3 tonight.)
Hether – Dreams (…this is a new covers album just put out called Covered In Hether. The album features a variety of cover versions from the San Diego-based singer-songwriter, this one being my favorite but I can’t for the life of me place the original. Very good dreamy record right here, though. Highly recommended.)
Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
Next block our very last triangle of new tunes for tonight’s first 57 goes like this: First up Hannah Jagadu will let it out, Benny Sings will continue things, and Hotel Ugly will wrap it up tight, but not pretty. THIS is The Drop.
_________
Back on The Drop and into the event horizon for tonight’s first half we go. Danno here, it’s Monday and we’re letting all the New Muses that we liked this weekend spaghettify presently, and that was our last triangle of newness for quarter 2 so let’s recap it...
Hannah Jadagu – Warning Sign (…this is the 3rd single to drop from the NYC-based artist’s debut album. The Aperture LP drops on May 19, and this tune was almost an afterthought, one of the last tunes for the record that the artist put together, but it turned out buttery smooth. Keep an eye out on this artist.)
Benny Sings – Movie Star (…just out this past Friday via Stone’s Throw is the latest LP from Benny Sings called Young Hearts, which I’m sure his fan base here in Korea is excited about. Go check the LP if you haven’t dug it yet.)
Hotel Ugly – To be, or not to be ugly (…this is another artist that it’s crazy to think this is their debut, but alas it is true. The artist’s Ugly Duck LP just dropped on Friday, and the band are a duo out of Houston proving very popular with each new release. Go give this one a shout.)
So that’s it for our favorites for the first half, and I was rather surprised this weekend as I ran into a bit about Men I Trust’s upcoming concert in Seoul late next month. Surprised as in, there’s still tickets available to see the Montreal chill darlings do their thing, so go & get you some. We’ll close with (recap), and that’ll do it for now before we warp to part 3 and all the Poppin’ Off. THIS is The Drop, and that is halftime.
Men I Trust – Show Me How
Men I Trust – Girl

III Poppin Off
Jimin – Like Crazy (Eng vers)
Ed Sheeran – Eyes Closed
ROSALIA & Rauw Alejandro – BESO
FLO feat Missy Elliott – Fly Girl
Hailee Steinfeld – SunKissing
Lana Del Rey feat Jon Batiste – Candy Necklace
6lack feat Don Toliver – Temporary

Jimin – Like Crazy (Eng vers)
- Just out this weekend is the debut solo album from BTS’ Jimin titled Face.
- The record upon release sold over a million copies within 24 hours, Billboard’s fans rated it their favorite new record, and Jimin did a performance of this on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last Friday in NYC to boot.
- Big doings.
Ed Sheeran – Eyes Closed
- The UK-based singer-songwriter is out with his newest and 5th career album on May 5 and it’s called subtract although it’s not spelled that way.
- Interestingly, the album is co-produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner, but we’ll have to see on the record when it drops in 5 weeks’ time.
ROSALIA & Rauw Alejandro – BESO
- This was a big announcement over the weekend as the Latin stars revealed with this track (meaning) that they are getting married, so felicidades on that.
- The two love birds also dropped a 3 song EP called R&R on Friday, so fans can check that out as well in the afterglow of the big announcement.
FLO feat Missy Elliott – Fly Girl
- A little R&B girl power throwback here, which sees Missy Misdemeanor and FLO team up on a new standalone which features the main theme of never needing a man to have a good time.
- The aughts-styled cut also celebrates the close of Women’s History Month here in March.
Hailee Steinfeld – SunKissing
- For those of you who cannot wait for summer, you not only cannot be blamed today as this weather was choice, but you also have a new theme song to make it just that much sunnier in your neck of the woods.
- Nothing announced with this tune, just a standalone for now.
Lana Del Rey feat Jon Batiste – Candy Necklace
- As noted Del Rey’s latest LP Did You Know There’s A Tunner Under Ocean Blvd is out as of Friday, and is just a lovely album brimming with collabs.
- Here Del Rey teams up with Grammy winner and leader of the Stephen Colbert band Jon Batiste, who also has a bit of a solo interlude on the record as well.
- Great album, do check in full if you haven’t yet.
6lack feat Don Toliver - Temporary

Part 4 – Fresh K Cuts
hanbee – number own
Chamsom – Cue Sign
Peach Luffe – Notice Me
109 – First Love
Suitz feat Kim Yu-jin – 우리 올해가 지나기 전에
So!Yoon! feat RM – Smoke Sprite
So!Yoon! – OUT (to be continued :)

Facts
hanbee – number own
- This is a Korean artist based in NZ who’s been on our radar both Monday and Tuesday nights here on The Drop.
- Jeong Hanbee as she’s truly named emigrated with her parents to NZ when she was one year old, and has a smattering of singles thus far in her young career.
Chamsom – Cue Sign
- Very excited about this new tune, as the veteran indie trio are back with this as of Feb 12.
- The band released a bit of a 7” with this tune, having both Korean and English versions of this song, along with the same on the flip tune called Snow Ball.
Peach Luffe – Notice Me
- Our good friend Peach Luffe aka Jong Lee is out with this single as of late last week.
- Interestingly, the Toronto-based Korean artist also put out two other singles of the same song, with slowed down and sped up versions also available.
109 – First Love
- True name Kim Chan-young with the Korean stage name of il kong ku, this is the artist’s latest single which dropped along with an instrumental version on Feb 25.
Suitz feat Kim Yu-jin – 우리 올해가 지나기 전에
- The song title itself means Before Our Year Is Over, and this is the latest single from the singer that I can’t find anything about aside from surface info.
- Interestingly, or maybe ironically, the Suitz put out a tune called Who Am I as his initial single, which I’m interested in finding the answer to.
So!Yoon! feat RM – Smoke Sprite
So!Yoon! – OUT (to be continued :)
- Can’t get enough of this solo album from SE SO NEON’s Hwang So-yoon.
- The album is called Episode1: Love, available everywhere as of last Weds.
