The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Tonight we welcome San Diego-based indie DIY artist Scoobert Doobert not for a look under the mask but into the future as we get an exclusive listen to a new cut out March 18 and some talk about his work with CHAI, amongst other crazy stuff.

Show Notes

As broadcast February 25, 2022 with plenty of masks for all who wish to remain anonymous in their podcast adventures.  Tonight we welcome a guy to take over the playlist who has truly been making his own way both in style and substance in the music world while maintaining his secret identity via encrypted Scooby Doo mask.  His meld of heavy beats, lo-fi, and indie rock stylings have gained great attention from some important names over the past several months, and he lined up a great playlist of influences and songs he's personally worked on in the studio.  Amazingly fun guy to talk to about music, this is an artist to pay attention to and a show not to be slept on.

It is 20 hours past midnight on a sunny like San Diego but certainly not warm like it kinda Friday in our fair city of light, and the sun god smiles like SoCal today because he knows who’s on the phone from where for our guest artist selector feature. And this Friday’s programming is kissed by Ra as February 25, 2022. This is Danno in studio 2 as always as ever each and every night, extra psyched to welcome Scoobert Doobert to the show this evening, coming at you but not necessarily for you from studio 2 GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do?
For those unfamiliar or even if you know of his sound, Scoobert Doobert is the moniker of a San Diego-based independent artist and producer who wears a Scooby Doo mask to maintain anonymity, but even so his music has definitely been garnering attention in the music world of late, and we’ll talk more with him about his upcoming album due out this fall and his work with Japanese wildlings CHAI more in hour two. Really brilliant guy to talk some tunes with and a super talented creative, hour 2 is gonna be a real treat this evening. However, before anything happens nobody gets outta here alive without knowing a bit about the past, so we open with a very gray bit of album history tonight, and we’ll talk more about the Jay-Z wedding with the Fab Four after we let the man say all he can. THIS is The Drop.
________
Danger Mouse – What More Can I Say*
The Drop has tipped off and we are full speed ahead on our guests & requests Friday night. Thrilled to have you joining and fueling the gig as always, this is Danno this is what I do, and we’re on the air as it is was and shall be when it strikes 8 bells every single night. This evening we are welcoming a man who is more mysterious the Hannah Barbera cartoon dog’s own adventures in Scoobert Doobert. The masked man out of San Diego whose identity is still a well-kept secret for those not close to him joins us after 9pm for a world premiere of an unreleased work that drops March 18, so keep it locked, this is a killer playlist and interview coming up in parts 3 & 4.
For right now though, we opened with The Gray Album, which was Danger Mouse’s shotgun wedding of Jay-Z’s Black album and The Beatles’ famed self-titled double album from 68. We just opened with What More Can I Say, the 2nd track off the LP.
Released on this date in 2004, the LP gained mega notoriety not only for its mashup of Jay Z & The Beatles, but also with record label EMI’s attempt to block it. Smarter than the average industry cats, the artist just released it for free digitally on his website to huge acclaim. Of course, there’s really no reason EMI did this aside from hubris and greed, as the producer already had the blessing of both Jay and the two surviving members of the Fab Four in Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, so they only ended up throwing gasoline on a fire to try and put it out.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast…
Now let’s begin rolling out the audio red carpet for the man they call Scoobert Doobert, and we have a trio of more indie cuts to check out that are both new and from past beloved guests that kinda fit right in with the vibe tonight. Up next we have our favorite heretical genius in Griffith James and we’ll follow that with the latest from JW Francis and our local boy done good sanchez from his new Burgundy LP. Naturally, we shall discuss things further side opposite the swervies but for now THIS is The Drop on your Friday night with Scoobs O’Doobs.
________________
The Drop is back and we are into the last blah blah blahs from yours truly for tonight’s first quarter. What’s going on this evening , Drop Slops (Korean)? This is Danno, hoping you got outside for a bit of fresh air as it was brisk but still lovely. I naturally was trapped in the studio, so just to keep it 100, I’m obviously living vicariously through you, party people. Tonight in hour 2 we welcome this week’s guest artist selector in Scoobert Doobert, who is a brilliant multidisciplinarian out of San Diego, and we’ll hear a couple dabs of his work momentarily. For right now, let’s explain ourselves and what we just did there…
Griffith James – Obscene Boy (…one of our favorite guests this past year was our most honored free thinker right there, this track is off his rather autobiographical LP Comfortably High, which discusses his upbringing and escape from a religious group that kind of morphed into an authoritarian cult later in his life. Do check in full, one of our top albums of last year that’s Griffith James Comfortably High.)
JW Francis – Sweet As A Rose (…our main man JW Fran Fran with his latest single. The Okie Boy somehow made good in NYC has a new LP dropping later this year he tells us, but we gotta wait to get more details on that. Gotta love that warbly lofi rock and bedroom smoochy sound, can’t wait to have him back on the gig.)
sanchez. – Little Bird (…speaking of done good, that was our main man Oisin Magee with a tune off his debut solo LP Burgundy, recorded right here in Gwangju with the help of so many artists and most especially our Thursday night rock guru Dan Lloyd who produced that and 9 other songs on the LP. Go check the whole thing, it’s absolutely smashing good work.)
Now speaking of that phenomenon, we have to give our man Scoobert Doobert his first closeup tonight. Japanese group CHAI is out with the Wink Together remixes album, and we’ll play Scoobs’ remix of Miracle to start things. CHAI is currently killing it on tour with Mitski in the US right now, and we’ll have to inquire how they hooked up with the masked pup during hour 2’s interview. After the CHAI remix we have an original called I’m An Idiot, and that’s gonna be a wrap on quarter one of tonight’s fiesta forever for two hours. THIS is The Drop on your Scoobert Doobert Friday night.
CHAI – Miracle (Scoobert Doobert remix)
Scoobert Doobert – I’m An Idiot

II
The Drop is back for tonight as we have commenced the 2nd stanza of our masked canine Friday night adventure. For those just joining us Scoobert Doobert will be on the phone shortly after we hit 9 bells where he takes over the playlist and discusses with us some of his favorite tunes, and we’re just making sure the road leading up is smooth for the mystery machine. As to what we just threw into the solar system, that was...
Shadow Community – Restless Song ( …a little side project of local mystery musician Mid-Air Thief, this one dropped late in 2020 and is just such a lush, expansive bit of tunage. We’ll hear more from Mid-Air Thief in hour 2 later on, as Master Doobert discusses the Korean indie artist’s influences on his own work.)
Meaningful Stone – A Call From My Dream ( …the title track to another album from late 2020 here. Meaningful Stone, stage name 김듯돌 has really been putting together an impressive body of diverse work over the past few years with this and another EP last year, do check her out more if you dug that.)
Now before we continue just a quick reminder to follow us on social media, we are @gfnthedrop on most major social media platforms. If you’re local aka here in Korea, send us a message #9870 (50/100). What doesn’t cost you anything is catching us after the show, The Drop with Danno or The Drop on GFN (or) is available on most major podcast platforms, and you can find us with a simple google search & stream, download, and/or subscribe free & easy.
Moving ahead, we’ve got a pair of tunes from further afield but equally chill to send to the aliens who we hope are also listening. Villagers is up next to be followed by the incredible Joan As Police Woman from her latest LP with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu, both of which we’ll let you know a bit about if you are not so initiated. THIS is The Drop on your Friday night in The Mystery Machine.
____________
The Drop continues as we head towards the jump to parts 3 & 4 tonight and our exclusive interview and playlist with Scoobert Doobert. Danno here, as usual, but for not usual our guest artist selector tonight is a man who keeps his own counsel as far as identity, wearing a scooby doo mask to hide who he is. Really amazing musician, and we can’t wait to play our interview with him for you in hour 2. As to what we just rocked in the last block, that was...
Villagers – The First Day (…a lovely bit of work from the Dublin-based Irish quintet’s 2021 album Fever Dreams. Their fifth studio album is very highly regarded by us, but don’t take our word for it, as the LP has an 84% rating from Metacritic overall.)
Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Get My Bearings (…our runner-up for album of the year right here, Joan As Police Woman’s LP recorded in a one night jam session with the late father of Afrobeat Tony Allen and Vienna-based Dave Okumu. The Solution Is Restless is an incredible bit of work, and this song specifically is Joan’s reaction to a friend of hers passing from COVID, which she discussed with me on our January 7 show. Amazing artist, amazing album that’s The Solution Is Restless.)
So, we’re almost to the portal that’s going to take us to part 3 tonight and our conversation with Scoobert Doobert, but we had to add our own little bit to his 2nd hour playlist with something jazzier and instrumentally call and response which is a bit of a theme leading up to 10 o’clock this evening. Up next we have BBNG with Karriem Riggins and Brasilero legend Arthur Verocai on a tune called Beside April, and then it’s the title track to Ghost Funk Orchestra’s 2019 LP A Song for Paul, which is Seth Applebaum’s goodbye ode to his own departed father. THIS is The Drop as the wormhole opens to part 2 and Scoobert Doobert’s arrival on your guest artist selector Friday night special.
