The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Tonight for Lizz Kalo's final appearance on the show until March, we have a very special trip to Portugal for all the fado and indie you can handle! Desfrute!

Show Notes

As broadcast January 27, 2022 with plenty of portugues audio portions to feast on for your evening meal.  Tonight we flew off to Lisbon with Lizz Kalo for her final round trip until March as she's on like, REAL ACTUAL vacation.  However, in continuing with our efforts to get away from winter's cold in our minds, we went to the country named after the city of Porto and had a great time rocking some newer psyche & indie rock along with paying homage to some of the older fado innovators like Amalia Rodrigues and rock innovators like Rui Veloso.  Desfrute!

I.
It is 20 hours past midnight and it’s still cold outside even though today was pleasant enough…I suppose, but it’s certainly not going to stop us from going to warmer climes tonight and feeling a bit more summery. And this Wednesday evening is drifted onto the warm shores of Lisbon as January 26, 2022. This is Danno as always as ever from studio 2, GFN HQ in Downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Since it’s Wednesday it’s time for our Round Trip and Lizz Kalo graces us once again aboard the plane as flight TD060 heads for Portugal tonight, and we’ll exploring a lot of the indie sounds in both hours from that lovely nation on the far West coast of Europe, with a few shouts to the older artists in the process along with a quick shout for Cabo Verde & the echoes of Lusophone Africa as well. For right now though, we’ll start with Wilco, as it was on this date that they launched their own label, and we’ll discuss further on the other side of the sonics. This is The Drop.
Wilco – Jesus, Etc.
Back on The Drop and we are en route to Incheon right now on the VIP bus (which seriously, my fellow Gwangjuvites, is surely the way to get to the airport), and we just opened with our usual history feature while we boarded the bus, which we’ll discuss shortly. What’s the deal tonight, Drop Gangsters (Korean)? Danno on the mic here in studio 2, GFN HQ, downtown Gwangju, and we fly to Lisbon this evening on flight TD060 and for those of you in the geographically challenged category, that is the capital of Portugal.
But before we get into the indie and fado portugues this evening, we started with Wilco and Jesus Etc for our TIGHT (or) feature here to kick off the show. And that is because the Chicago band announced the formation of their own record label, dBpm Records. At the time founder & frontman Jeff Tweedy announced the label would release the Grammy-winning band’s albums & singles along with a lot of other things.
That turned out to be half true, as dBpm continues to release the band’s albums and Jeff Tweedy’s solo works, but not much else aside from that. However, it must be pointed out that there is some very high quality with the other releases, with Daniel Johnston and Pops Staples being notable albums released.
Of course, Wilco continues to do their thing, with Ode to Joy being their latest LP from 2019. As to what we played to begin things, that tune was from their 2002 breakout album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
So, we’re gonna get into the first troika of Portuguese cuts and start the show properly this evening as we continue heading down the road to ICN. Up next we have Doismileoito or 2008 along with Ganso and Luis Severo, all of which we shall discuss after they let the glitter fly in the air. This is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday heading to Lisbon.
_________

Back on The Drop tonight as we sit in the afterglow of our first block on our Round Trip Wednesday. The incomparable Lizz Kalo joins us for the final time until March this year as we have no show next Wednesday for Lunar New Year and she’s on vacation until March. Thus, let’s get into the tunes we just heard to start things tonight. That was…
Doismileoito – Volta ao mundo (…this is a band that seemingly was named after the year of their founding, but we’ll talk more about them in hour 2. This tune, the title meaning around the world was released on their 2011 album that we’ll also discuss further later.)
Ganso - Pistoleira (…just like in Spanish this title means gunslinger. The band is a Portuguese quintet, and this was from their debut LP from 2015 Costela Ofendida, which it says translates to Offended Rib, but it might mean Injured Rib.)
Luis Severo – Boa Companhia (…the title here means Good Company, and this is from a 2017 album that is self-titled and was the artist’s debut. We’ll discuss the artist a bit further whilst in Portugal with Lizz Kalo in hour 2 this evening.)
Okay, so let’s keep it sunny & indie tonight to finish the first quarter this evening. Up next is B Fachada with a tune called Song of Rejection or Cacao do Rejeicao, and to end things we have Best Youth with a cut called Midnight Rain, and that is gonna do is as the countryside & cities flash by the window for the home stretch to the airport. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip to Portugal.
B Fachada – Cancao do Rejeicao
Best Youth – Midnight Rain

II.
The Drop is back on the air as we await check-in for our flight to Lisbon, departing at 9pm sharp on flight TD060 bound for the warmth of Portugal with the wonderful Lizz Kalo aboard the flight with us for her final time until March. Danno here just kinda bored & waiting in line, so glad we had some tunes to accompany us as this looks like it’s gonna be a while. That was…
Amalia Rodrigues – Fado portugues (…if you’re not familiar with Portuguese fado, this is a pretty great singer to begin the exploration with. A very well-known singer & actress in her time, she was known as the queen of fado, popularizing the style internationally while playing concerts all over the globe. .)
Rui Veloso – A paixao (Segundo Nicolau da Viola) (…a bit more of a ballad style from the long-time singer-songwriter. Veloso is known as The Father of Portuguese Rock, and this one appeared on his 1990 album entitled Mingo & The Samurai.)
Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
Next block we’ll switch it to more contemporary stuff while we go through the endless security rigamerole. On deck are tunes from Mariza along with Sara Tavares and a band called Minta & The Brook Trout, all of which we’ll discuss further after they make the cosmos wave. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to Lisbon.
_________
The Drop has arrived at the gate for the flight after the security madness, needing a drink if I’m keeping it 100, which I’m always trying to do with you, fair listener. Danno here ready for a frosty pint prior to flight TD060 for Lisbon momentarily, and Lizz Kalo will guide the tour of Portugal for hour 2 starting when we go wheels up. As to what just happened musically, let’s break it down but not off...
Mariza – Quem Me Dera (…a pretty big name in Portugal and wider Europe right here, the title of the tune meaning I Wish. This cut appeared on her 2018 self-titled album. She was born in the later days of Portuguese Mozambique in 1973 to a Portuguese father and Mozambican mother. After starting with Amalia Rodrigues, The Queen of Fado, it was only appropriate to show you how the genre has gone into the future.)
Sara Tavares – Balance (…an older cut right here, the title track to the artist’s 2005 album. Tavares is another example of singers who represent Portugal and their country of ancestry, this time Cabo Verde, and we’ll get into that when we rock another cut in hour 2.)
Minta & The Brook Trout – Falcon (…interesting female indie duo out of Lisbon right here, this tune appearing on a 2011 album called Olympia, which was a bit of a breakout for them. The band now appears courtesy of Matador Records, and their latest album just dropped last year called Demolition Derby. Very Americana sound and imagery going on with this band, it must be noted.)
Alright, we’ve got another pair of tunes and up next we have Crime in Tagier by a group called Rapaz Ego, and we’ll finish with some more traditional guitar wizardry by a group called Filho da Mae, which I cannot translate for you on the air, but the tune translates as Found Your Teeth, and that is gonna close it mother father style for the first half. THIS The Drop and that’s final call to board, so it is therefore halftime.
Rapaz Ego – Crime em Tanger
Filho da Mae – Encontrei os Teus Dentes

III & IV Round Trip

Madrepaz - Bonanza
JP Simoes - Alvoroco
Surma - Maasai
Luis Severo - Planicie (Tudo Igual)
Filipe Sambado - Deixem La
Doismileoito - Quinta-feira

Sara Tavares - Ginga
Lura - Fitiço Di Funana
Bana - Cor di Rosa
SOLUTIONS - In My City
KIRARA - Worries

Madrepaz - Bonanza
● Madrepaz is a four-man band with a style that has been described as “Shamanic Pop” and fits in with indie rock.
● They are often referred to as the Portuguese version of The Beatles in comparison of course.
● Their album Panoramix was released in 2017 with the video from this 2018 single, Bonanza.
JP Simoes – Alvoroco (Uproar)
- This is a singer born in Coimbra, Portugal in 1970 whose family fled the country during the Carnation Revolution of 1974 for Brasil. He only stayed there for about a year, though.
- He mainly in his early career worked as the lead singer for the bands Belle Chase Hotel and Quinteto Tati.
- He made his solo debut on an album titled 1970 in 2007. This tune debuted live as part of a singing festival in 2018, and it wasn’t popular with the crowd it would seem, but gained huge recognition when put into album format.
Surma - Maasai
● Solo artist Surma is another singer with an exquisite voice who is also currently considered one of the biggest names in Portuguese contemporary music
● She has produced eight albums since 2012 and her last, “Antwerpen” came out in 2017.
● In addition to touring in her home country, Surma tours internationally and has made appearances across Europe and the USA.
Luis Severo - Planicie (Tudo Igual) = Plain (All equal)
- This is a tune off a 2017 debut album from the artist, which is self-titled.
- Still seemingly kind of making his way in the indie scene and looking for greater popularity abroad.
- He released his latest album Guitarrinha (Little Guitar) on Christmas Day of last year.

Filipe Sambado - Deixem Lá
● Lisbon-born and Algarve-raised Filipe Sambado began intertwining his life with music as a teenager.
● He was also involved in theater and always tried to involve himself in different types of art forms
● Deixem la was released in 2019

Doismileoito - Quinta-feira
- This band’s name means 2008, and the song title is Thursday.
- The group is a melodic indie quartet that has been active since 2008, apparently although their first professional release was the next year in 2009.
- This tune appeared on Pes Frios or Cold Feet from 2011.

Sara Tavares - Ginga
● Sara Alexandra Lima Tavares (born 1 February 1978) is a singer, composer, guitarist and percussionist.
● She is a Second-generation Portuguese of Cape Verdean descent
● She composes African, Portuguese and North American influenced world music. She composes in Portuguese and Portuguese-based creole languages.

Lura - Fitiço Di Funana
● Lura (born Maria de Lurdes Assunção Pina is a singer and musician, of Cape Verdean descent.
● Her compositions are based on traditional Cape-Verdean music as for example the Morna, Funaná and Batuque, and influenced by African and contemporary Western music

Bana - Cor di Rosa
- One of the biggest artists out of Cabo Verde, Bana has been making music since the 1950’s.
- During the Colonial wars, he found himself accused of collaboration with the colonial Portuguese government, and fled for Europe once he realized he was in danger.
- He is now based in Lisbon, and it must be pointed out still hugely popular in his home country and all around Lusophone Africa.

SOLUTIONS - In My city
● A four piece rock band consisting of members, Park Sol, Naru, Oh-kyung kwon and Park han sol.
● They have been active since 2012 to date
● They have released 3 EP’s and over 6 singles
KIRARA - Worries
- An artist I just cannot get enough of, fka STQ Project. She is a fantastic live PA performer and producer, and her agency describes her as so prolific that it’s intimidating, although she’s 100% independent otherwise. Kirara makes busy electro-pop loaded up with samples and 8-bit blips.
- Reminds me of Hot Chip with more of a rock edge, and this is a long player that’s gonna take us out tonight.
