The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Another Tuesday with & without Kat Bass as we go through all her new tunes & picks this week but without our lovely indie maven in studio. Still dealing with the tragedy of Saturday, but mainly just hoping to get your mind off it.

Show Notes

As broadcast November 1, 2022 with(out) our main girl but we keep on keepin' on.  Tonight we open spotlighting Kurt Cobain and Nirvana finally releasing their stellar MTV Unplugged album on this date in 1994 while spotlighting some of the emotions and states we're all in right now in the horrific afterglow of Saturday's tragedy.  If you're suffering from survivor's guilt or any mental health issues resulting from this event, even if you weren't there, there are resources out there (and we'd be happy to provide them if anyone reaches out).  Kat Bass was once again not in the studio this week, but was ready with the playlist and tunes for our indie weekly.  Highlights from COOL HEAT, SURL, The Hails, and Daisy the Great feature throughout, along with of course a slew of other worthy artists to check out.

Part 1
Nirvana – All Apologies (Unplugged)
Field Guide – Worst of Ways
Phoebe Go – Be the Player, Not the Poet
Daisy the Great – Time Machine
US Girls – Bless This Mess
Teenage Priest – Victory Lap
Chelsea Days – It Goes

Facts
Nirvana – All Apologies
- On this date in 1994, Nirvana Unplugged was released. The band’s MTV Unplugged in New York album, taken from a performance a year earlier, was finally released after much anticipation and of course Kurt Cobain’s passing earlier in the year. The album topped the charts in many countries, including the US, UK and Australia.
- I don’t know about you guys out there I’m sure everyone is suffering from a range of emotions but on the Itaewon Tragedy, I feel like this song after calamity strikes. It’s a very strange range of guilt, anger, and sadness. It’s very surreal and I’m sure I’m not alone in still having very little to say about this shocking horror. If anybody out there was near the tragedy or you have loved ones lost and are suffering from Survivor’s Guilt, do know there are resources to help you through this.
- May all those who lost their lives in this tragic event rest in power, our condolences to family and loved ones left behind once again.
Field Guide – Worst of Ways
- Just out Friday is the new self-titled album from Field Guide, which is the artist’s sophomore LP.
- Per Killbeat music, “This album lives at the sometimes-tense intersection of those truths (of the pandemic and life) – loving someone dearly while being pulled toward something new, feeling joy in the melancholy, a gratitude for deep friendship and an uncertainty of one’s place in it.”
Phoebe Go – Be the Player, Not the Poet
- After going out on tour with the likes of Holly Humberstone and Hatchie in support, Australian artist Phoebe Go is out with their debut EP called simply Player.
- “This EP is like my introduction – my “Hi! I’m Phoebe!” And I’m really proud of that, on a creative and personal level. I had a harsh couple of years, which also probably turned out to be the most liberating too.”
Daisy the Great – Time Machine
- Another sophomore LP that dropped on Friday is this band’s called All You Need Is Time.
- This tune dropped the day before the album release and the duo have such an easygoing sound that it’s almost hard to remember here that they’re talking about quantum physics and time travel.
US Girls – Bless This Mess
- The 2nd new tune of the year from Meg Remy is out as of last week, and comes with an interesting video of the artist from 1998.
- The clips are edited and matched to the lyrics of the song in painstaking fashion, and Remy says of the video that, “realfake. It’s naturally authentic while being transparently fake. Its intent is not to deceive or convince, but rather to induce reflection and remembrance.”
Teenage Priest – Victory Lap
- The latest standalone from Teenage Priest, aka Taylor Van Ginkel. Nothing new to announce as far as larger projects here, but just another good joint from one of our favey fave fave faves.
Chelsea Days – It Goes

Part 2
Kailee Morgue - Cheerleader
girlpuppy - Permanent State
The Hails - Exonerate
Softlander - Angel
Vibropath - Overboard
Jude Shuma - Working So Hard
Glom – Pebble

Facts

Kailee Morgue - Cheerleader 2.45
- fresh new artist on the scene! Indie-pop artist Kailee Morgue from Arizona has released their debut album, Girl Next Door.
- Infusing introspective pop and 90s inspired indie rock, Morgue really brings out the teen soundtracks of what you'd imagine to be your movie theme song.
- Her project is to heal her inner teenager, by bringing back all the nostalgia and bit of the 90s and 2000s pop icons she idolized as a child.
- Honestly, songs that sound nostalgic? What could go wrong?

girlpuppy - Permanent State 4.31
- 23 year old Atlanta based singer-songwriter Becca Harvey, also known as girlpuppy, is here with their full length debut album, When I'm Alone, and is getting serious approval all around.
- The album is a voyage of emotional expression, with tender moments of acceptance, remembrance of love’s past, and euphoric, dreaming through fantasy sounds.
- Our pick Permanent State is the final track that ends all scenes and sounds, the time when the curtain drops and everything has been done.

The Hails - Exonerate 3.10
- Indie kids now get to have their own version of "New Rules," of Dua Lipa, as The Hails has released their own groovy, unapologetic Dump-Him anthem, "Exonerate."
- the newest single of the Florida-based 5-piece reminisces of coffee house jams, with rings of iconic indie rock favorites from the early 2010s, but is a definite sound of its own.
- With borderline passive aggressive advice that are hard pills to swallow - type lyrics, this song is a must for that one friend who needs to hear about their horrible boyfriend.

Softlander - Angel 5.26
- With only two singles under their belt, Switzerland born quartet Softlander has released their first ever album, Get On Board. And honestly, I would very much like to!
- Consisting of 10 tracks, the album is a joyride of sounds. The description says,
- get on board. stay in bed. get some rest.
listen:
we’re moving, through an empty space that is. we can get there in time and we brought those sounds you missed.
let’s crush some ice, let’s get some sun in your eyes.
let the sparrows sing their lovely songs, by the help of electricity.
irritating, but we like it a lot.

Vibropath - Overboard 3.03
- Describing themselves as Jangle pop and Lofi, New York based solo project Vibropath is here to make some good vibrations.
- Producing, writing, and singing on their own, our Artist works hard as they work full time as a nurse as well. I would never have imagined with music like this, it would all come from an ordinary nurse.

Jude Shuma - Workin So Hard 4.16
- From Chicago IL., Artist Jude Shuma explains they make psych Lofi pop music blended with depression soul. Honestly that is right up my alley.
- Public since 2017, Jude Shuma has accomplished countless collections, including creating their own comic as a part of their album, and featuring their music in Marvel Tv Show, Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D.
- Today we have their latest single Workin So Hard, which I believe you really are Jude Shuma.

Part 3
Kitchen - River Song
Masaki Suda & sooogood! - Ai to uno
Paige ft. Ant Saunders - Miles Away
Skinshape - Better Chances
SURL - Walking in Dream
Orchid Mantis- I Could Live in Sleep
S.C.A.B – Small Talk

Facts

Kitchen - River Song 4.22
- I have to say, I never knew the name Kitchen was never not taken. With how simple it is, it seems to give such impact… including their songs!
- From Rochester, New York, one man band Kitchen has stayed busy since 2016, and is continuing to do so.
- River Song is their first and last single before the release of their newest EP, Four Songs, on November 4th. it was told the songs were recorded very quickly during the summer. Funny enough River Song doesn't really seem like it.

Masaki Suda & sooogood! - Ai to uno 3.50
- Taishō Sugō, known professionally as Masaki Suda, is a Japanese actor and singer. He won the Japan Academy Film Prize for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.
- Today they have released their Newest EP, Quiet Journey. Despite the title, the EP itself is attracting some noise. Our Pick Ai To Uno is the 3rd track of the assamble. If you like what you hear, go check them out.

Paige ft. Ant Saunders - Miles Away 2.35
- New Zealand artist Paige released her new single ‘Miles Away’, a collaboration with American singer Ant Saunders. The song is a gentle pop ballad that leans heavily into soul and R&B and explores the concept of intimacy without touch.
- Paige says about the creation of the track:“Working with Ant on ‘Miles Away’ has been really beautiful as we both have our own interpretation of what this song means to us,”
- “It can be digested in so many different ways and we’re excited to see what this song means for others and how it relates to them.”

Skinshape - Better Chances 3.27
- Skinshape is the project of Will Dorey, originally from Swanage, England, and today I am here with their latest latest Album Nostalgia.
- As a Former Member of indie band Palace, Dorrey expertly explores understated sounds and theatrical textures across the board.
- Skimming throught the album myself, I plan on taking a more thorough approach and listening to their music with more detail soon.

SURL - Walking in Dream 5.25
- I am back withsome more of Korean artist Surl and their latest and official first album release, of us.
- It is said he listening to Surl, their sound is quite difficult to define through just a few words, but has to be a description; just as a poem or a short story.
- Taking this concept once more, "of us" shows creativity and imagination to a point of how it can be a memory for others.
- Our pick today is their 7th track and I wonder what this song could mean to you.

Orchid Mantis- I Could Live in Sleep 3.06
- Orchid Mantis, also known as the experimental bedroom pop project of Atlanta based artists Thomas Howard, has returned with their final single before they release their 7th album, How Long Will It Take, on November 11th.
- It seems our artist is very excited to share their new stuff, saying how "there was a lot to say with this one, i really poured my soul into it & i truly hope it resonates with you"

Part 4
Spirit Ghost - I Prayed
Morning Silk - So Fun
Oberhofer - Let It Go (Demo)
COOL HEAT - Forget
Asian Glow ft. Bomul - Huddle Formation
Hotel Fiction - Monster
Rebounder – Factoury Girl

Facts

Spirit Ghost - I Prayed 3.27
- Alongside learning how to get rid of Ghosts through Prayer from the Internet, it took me some time to know who this band was.
- From Austin Texas, Spirit Ghost is a one man band releasing music since 2014. Through the COVID time period of 2020, they took a break and gave us two new singles, No Future and I Prayed.
- Both titles seem ironic… or is it?

Morning Silk - So Fun 3.23
- As an artist in New York, Frank Corr, also known as Morning Silk has just released their first EP ever, Morning Silk.
- Self titled, the EP consists of 6 tracks, with today's being their fourth song. With a quiet but upbeat melody, So Fun brings fun to their alternative dreamy pop style.

Oberhofer - Let It Go (Demo) 3.26
- Not to be confused with Oberhofer's song Let It Go released last year, Today we hear for the first time the Demo version of the already well known song.
- In contrast to its original bright-minded synth pop mix sound, the demo gives a more rough and somewhat sad indie style. Personally I can't choose which is better!

COOL HEAT - Forget 3.05
- COOL HEAT – also known as the solo project of Chicago-based musician and photographer Eden Sierotnik – released their awesome new single “Forget,” his first new track since releasing his debut album Nowhere last year.
- I liked how, In the distance there’s faint sounds that contrast to the soft vocals, this discordance hinting at the feeling of desire to keep our memory intact despite the melancholy of remembrance.

Asian Glow ft. Bomul - Huddle Formation 3.18
- Asian Glow, also known as dbeatdropdeadpowerhead on Bandcamp, is a solo project of South Korean artist 신경원.
- Even though they have only debuted in 2020 with their first album, Nosferadoof, Asian Glow has constantly been releasing music, having Five albums, one with including today's cover, Coverglow pt1.
- Huddle Formation is originally from EDM/indie based artists The GO! Team. Honestly? I prefer Asian Glow's version

Hotel Fiction - Monster 5.33
- I wasn't aware of Hotel Fiction at all until I was making today's list, and their sound doesn't seem new or upcoming at all!
- Hotel Fiction is a duo band from Athens who have toured with artists such as Flipturn, Beach Fossils, The Brooks & The Bluff, and more since they have graduated college last year.
- Today they have given us their newest EP, Enjoy Your Stay! And Dan, I definitely am.
