I'm Dr. Bruno Casanova. I'm a gynecologic surgeon in New York City and chair of the Women's Health Department at one of the largest private practice groups in the city.
For years, I've taught residents about RVUs and the business side of medicine.
Medicine is constantly evolving. We are expected to stay current on new medications, new technologies, new procedures, and new research. Yet there is one topic that receives remarkably little attention during our training, the business of medicine.
More specifically, RVUs
Each year, roughly [00:01:00] 30,000 new medical students enter residency training and more than 40,000 doctors graduate from residency in the United States. Yet most of them complete training without a clear understanding of RVUs and how they influence compensation
Whether you are employed by a large health system, work in private practice, receive a fixed salary, are compensated based on productivity, practice in a major city or serve in a rural community, RVUs affect your professional life. The purpose of this series is simple: to make RVUs easier to understand and less intimidating.
My goal is to break down a complicated topic into practical, easy-to-follow concepts that every medical professional can use.
As physicians, our primary mission is caring for our patients. That mission should always come first.
