The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

It's been 25 years since Daft Punk made their album debut with "Homework," and then it's two hours of funkpunksoulrock until 10, with Dan Lloyd throwing his favorite rocks for hour 2.

Show Notes

As broadcast January 20, 2022 with plenty of teachers for your podcast homework.  Tonight we pay tribute to both Daft Punk and Etta James.  The former released their groundbreaking debut LP "Homework" on this date 25 years prior, bringing the underground house & techno music to a more mainstream audience.  Etta James unfortunately passed away 10 years ago on this date, so we paid special homage to one of the greatest vocalists of all time by letting her take over the start of part 2 with her most popular studio effort and one of her most rousing live performances.  Great new funk & soul for the rest of the first hour, with fresh cuts from Jazzanova, Lady Wray, Arjuna Oakes, along with Parekh & Singh to truly take us all over the map.  After our first 57, rock guru Dan Lloyd takes us through the new rock out this week from Yard Act, Comeback Kid, Eddie Vedder, and Parquet Courts, along with some major news from Every Time I Die, which was ugly and all out in the open.

I.
It is 20 hours past midnight after a lovely sunny & crisp January day here in Gwangju, and we got more warmth to bring this evening as the heat is turned up with our Sampled & AMPED Thursday evening. And tonight’s glowed up by the sun goddess however far away during the winter time as January 20, 2022. This is Danno be it known from studio 2 GFN HQ located in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Since it’s Thursday, that means that our Sampled first hour funk & soul radio sesh is running the hour until 9pm, and right as rain our rock guru Dan Lloyd busts down the door after that to take us down with all the new rock out this week along with a few bits of drama as well. Naturally, prior to anything happening on this show, we’ll start with our TIGHT (or) feature to begin, and a tribute by a young French group to their teachers on their debut album, released 25 years ago today. THIS is The Drop.
Daft Punk – Teachers
Back on The Drop, ready to begin the funked up stuff for our Sampled funk & soul first hour. Danno here, studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju. We’ll be going through the new & slept on funk & soul for the first hour tonight, and this evening 2nd hour we shall once again be graced with the presence of rock guru Dan Lloyd for our weekly rock feature we call AMPED.

For right now, we just commenced the show with Daft Punk and Teachers. One of the more b-side cuts from the debut album released on this date in 1997 called Homework. Here the young aspiring DJ’s and producers are paying tribute to the producers and DJ’s in the funk, hip-hop, and especially house & techno side of the musical spectrum, with heavy shout outs to Chicago’s 2nd generation DJ’s & producers like Derrick Carter and DJ Sneak.

The record was initially released in the UK on this date and is a big hit in Europe but only reaches #150 in the USA when it was released later on March 25. Both members, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, are music producers who use recording technology to combine house music with synthpop. Around The World was a hit that actually crossed over to dance floors everywhere, but some of the other tunes on the album found time on the turntables of some of their teachers as well at the time.

Of course, this would not be a one hit wonder story, as the duo would reach mega hit status time and time again over the following decades, finally breaking up and calling it quits just recently, with both doing their own thing on the turntables and in the studio moving forward.

#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.

Now that we got that bit of shamelessness outta the way, let’s throw on a few of the more recent and newly released funky joints to start our Sampled first hour properly. Up next we have Jazzanova along with Sammy Rae & The Friends to be followed by The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, and we’ll talk about all of this after they get thrown into space and return to earth. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday night.
______
The Drop is back for the final verbosities of the first quarter tonight. Danno here, making sure the sound is just so, and as always we’re honored to have you joining the show this evening. Dan Lloyd will also honor us with his presence in hour 2, but for now let’s run everything down that we just heard…
Jazzanova feat Sean Haefeli – Creative Musicians (…last year DJ Amir released Strata Records The Sounds of Detroit Volume 1, and now the veteran Berlin-based outfit Jazzanova have announced their own reimagining of that mix, with The Sounds of Detroit Reimagined slated for release on April 22, this being the new single to accompany the record.)
Sammy Rae & The Friends – Follow Me Like The Moon (…the latest single from Samantha Bowers and the band are back with their latest single. This one dropped last Friday, but nothing out there I could personally find as far as a larger announcement with this single. The band has been doing their thing with several EP’s released since their 2018 debut.)
The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble – La Fachada (…another single just out last week via Colemine right here, and a more apt moniker you would be hard pressed to find, fair listener. The veteran band dropped this joint as the b-side to another tune on a 7” with Step Down, just out Jan 14.)
Okay so, we got a couple more joints to put on the table before the bill flips over to part 2 this evening. Up next we have a reissue coming up from D’Sound, and we’ll play Flashback first to be followed by the genius duo out of India in Parekh and Singh, who are out with a tune called Je Suis La Pomme Rouge or I Am The Red Apple. This is the first tune released to an album dropping sometime later this year, but no further details divulged on that one yet. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday night.
D’Sound – Flashback
Parekh & Singh – Je Suis La Pomme Rouge

II
The Drop is back with the mic spit once again and we have officially put part 2 in slow motion with our 2nd TIGHT (or) feature for tonight. Danno here, this is what I do every single day between 8 & 10 on GFN, and we’re getting AMPED with Dan Lloyd once again later on. For right now, that was a tribute to the late, great Etta James to begin things here in the 2nd stanza…
Etta James – At Last (….)
Etta James – I’d Rather Go Blind (Live at Montreaux) (…one of the truly greatest voices of all time known as Miss Peaches passed 10 years ago today, so we thought we’d let the listener have a taste of Etta James in studio and in a live setting, the latter of which was where she truly killed it. That rendition of I’d Rather Go Blind was recorded live at the famed Montreaux Jazz Festival in 1975. Rest in power supreme, Etta James, gone on this date in 2012.)

So, moving ever forward we have some more new & recent entries into the soul spectrum that we need to give a whirl, as all three are big time favorites of ours. On deck is Lady Wray to followed by Arjuna Oakes & the latest from The Teskey Brothers. We’ll discuss all three of these beloved after we let ‘em go. This is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday.
___
The Drop returns for the final microphone dusting of the first half this evening. Danno here, studio 2, GFN HQ and going through some soulful favorites here in that last block of joints that are new & recently released. Bonus is these are three of our favorite contemporary artists, so let’s get to the liner notes on the notes that we just let float. That was…
Lady Wray – Joy & Pain (…just out late last week is another gem from Nicole Wray’s LP which dropped on January 10. This is the title track to the album, another piece of brilliance from Big Crown Records.)
Arjuna Oakes – As I Am (…the long-awaited Recovery Pt 2 EP is on the way from the young Wellington-based producer and singer-songwriter. That one drops in full from our dear Kiwi brother on February 4, so mark it if you dug it. Love his work on the intimate, stripped piano joints he’s made of late.)
The Teskey Brothers feat Emma Donovan – Get Back to the Land (…this one is a cover from 2016 by Archie Roach which appeared on an album titled Let Love Rule. The cover arrived just over a week ago alongside a video filmed by Bridgette Winten and edited by Nick Mckk which shows the band and Donovan performing the track.)
Okay, so we got one more joint to get in prior to the halftime buzzer here live on the air, but if you want the songs in their entirety it’s time to subscribe to our pod stream. To finish it’s a tune from Gabriels called Love & Hate In A Different Time, and that is gonna cover the time allotted for here on the air, but do keep an eye out on this trio, they have more coming here in 2022. THIS is The Drop and that’s halftime.
Gabriels – Love & Hate In A Different Time

Comeback Kid – Crossed ft Joe Duplantier
7th album Heavy Steps is out tomorrow. Canadian hardcore favorites Comeback Kid enlist the mighty voice of Joe Duplantier, the singer and guitarist of French metal heavyweights Gojira, for their new song "Crossed."
Could Gojira fans have ever guessed the group's throaty frontman would moonlight on a blistering punk track from one of melodic hardcore's most low-key influential combos? Maybe not, but the result is still a sonic thrill — one that could certainly get some heads banging.
Comeback Kid vocalist Andrew Neufeld explains, "'Crossed' is a no frills metallic hardcore track. Lyrically it deals with someone in my life that seemed so far gone and I had to watch them dig themselves further and further into a low and unrealistic place. 'Crossed into the void' so to say."
He continues, "We enlisted Joe from Gojira to represent somewhat of an overlord menacing presence in the song. An overshadowing power via his blood curdling scream. This song is direct and to the point about staying in reality and warns of the elements that could bring us further into darkness."

Billy Talent – Reckless Paradise
6th album Crisis of Faith finally arrives tomorrow (this, the lead single (and by far the best track I’ve heard off the record) was originally released in January 2020). Early reviews have been middling, with comparisons to Alter Bridge, Foo Fighters and Weezer (Rivers Cuomo guests on the album), none of whom have particularly impressive recent output.

Muse – Won’t Stand Down
Fantano nailed this – it sounds like a heavier Imagine Dragons.
Muse have returned with the video for their defiant new single “Won’t Stand Down,” the British rockers’ first new music in nearly four years.
“’Won’t Stand Down’ is a song about standing your ground against bullies, whether that be on the playground, at work or anywhere,” frontman Matt Bellamy said of the single in a statement. “Protecting yourself from coercion and sociopathic manipulation and to face adversity with strength, confidence and aggression.”
The video for “Won’t Stand Down” was directed by Jared Hogan and filmed in Kiev, Ukraine. While the new single didn’t arrive with the announcement of a new Muse LP, a release promises that the band is “currently working on more new music.”

Yard Act – Rich
After a two week delay, the Overload finally releases tomorrow. In the interim, Yard Act have released two new songs; the Sleaford Mods-esque Rich and the uptempo Pour Another. Both excellent.

PUP – Robot Writes a Love Song
Things are about to get ruff: PUP have announced their new album, THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND, out April 1st on Little DIpper / Rise Records. To herald its coming, the Canadian punks have shared “Robot Writes a Love Song,” a banging new single that will have you downloading feelings.
THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND is the follow-up to their stellar 2019 album Morbid Stuff, as well as the 2020 This Place Sucks Ass EP. It comes with the November single “Waiting,” plus plenty of song titles that show off the band’s wit, including the trilogy “Four Chords,” “Four Chords Pt. II: Five Chords,” and “Four Chords Pt. III: Diminishing Returns,” and the closing track “PUPTHEBAND Inc. Is Filing for Bankruptcy.”

Frank Turner – A Wave Across A Bay
Ahead of the release of his upcoming album FTHC next month, Frank Turner has shared a beautifully moving new single, A Wave Across A Bay.
Written in honour of late Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison, the track has been released with the blessing of his younger brother Grant, with Frank donating profits of a 7" single of the release to young people's mental health charity Tiny Changes.
"I still miss my friend Scott every day," says Frank. "His passing left such a huge hole in so many lives. I wrote this song in his honour and memory, it was hard to write and record, but I think it does the man some small justice."

Eddie Vedder – Brother the Cloud
Eddie Vedder has released “Brother the Cloud,” the latest preview of his upcoming solo album, Earthling (February 11).
“If I could wish, wish it away/ I would bleed on my knees and pray/ If I could give all that I have/ To bring him back today/ These are the dreams, sad as it seems/ I’m always wide awake,” he wails over boisterous electric guitar on the mournful tune.
“Brother the Cloud” follows previously released singles “Long Way” and “The Haves.” Earlier this week, the Pearl Jam frontman shared the full 13-song tracklist for Earthling, which also includes cuts like “Fallout Today,” “Rose of Jericho” and “Mrs. Mills.”
Vedder also recently divulged some of the big name guests who appear on the album, including Sir Elton John, Sir Ringo Starr, Stevie Wonder, Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Josh Klinghoffer. To close out the album, Vedder included archival recordings of his late father singing.

Every Time I Die – Map Change
Four-fifths of Buffalo metalcore outfit Every Time I Die have announced they are exiting the band.
Guitarists Jordan Buckley and Andy Williams, bassist Stephen Micciche and drummer Clayton “Goose” Holyoak all shared a joint statement today saying their last show with the band took place in December.
According to the statement, the band – apart from frontman Keith Buckley – had “hoped to come to an agreed upon legal statement that outlined the truth.” However, they say they were “informed today of something planned to be released not mutually agreed upon that consists of inaccuracies and controls a narrative to benefit one.”
The statement goes on to say that there has been “no direct communication” with Buckley, saying “it’s either impossible for direct communication with him solely or we’ve been cut off to any and all communication by him himself”.
Keith Buckley has since responded by sharing a letter sent to him by law firm Savur Law, dated December 20, 2021, saying that it had been retained by the rest of the band “for legal representation in connection with a separation agreement” between them and Buckley.

Dan Andriano and the Bygones – Narcissus, Amateur Classic Narcissist
Latest single from debut album Dear Darkness (February 11), which is shaping up to be an excellent record from the Alkaline Trio bassist/vocalist.
Andriano first began work on what would become Dear Darkness during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, writing demoes and raiding his archives of unfinished ideas, doing so more out of a deep-seated need to create than with any true end project in mind. Having spent so much of his life touring and making music, the time off forced by the pandemic was foreign to Andriano, who, at moments, struggled with how to use this newfound freedom, but also found it to be fruitful for his creative process.

Parquet Courts – Watching Strangers Smile
Parquet Courts have shared a new song called “Watching Strangers Smile.” Prior to releasing the track on streaming platforms, the band debuted it with a live performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show yesterday morning (January 11).
Last fall, Parquet Courts issued their latest full-length Sympathy for Life. They also shared music videos for the singles “Walking at a Downtown Pace,” “Black Widow Spider,” and “Homo Sapien.”

Goose – Borne
Fast-rising jam band Goose are kicking off their 2022 with a new single out today called “Borne.” To accompany its release, the Connecticut quintet have also announced a headlining show at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall on June 25th.
The new single is a sweeping, steady rock number that sounds tailor-made for theater performances, doused in reverb and crystal-clear production. “‘Borne’ is a pretty unfiltered breath of newness; a beginning statement,” frontman Rick Mitarotonda said in a press release. “The song is a declaration to oneself to remember to not overthink things and make them more than they should be. It’s a reminder to try to be honest, and to let our work be what it is.”
Goose’s Radio City concert will be a milestone performance for the group, featuring one acoustic set and two electric sets. For those hoping to catch their debut at the iconic venue, tickets will initially be available through a lottery, with a request period starting today (January 18th) at 12:00 p.m. ET through tomorrow (January 19th) at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Jack White – Love is Selfish
Jack White is gearing up to release two new albums in the coming months: a “really hard” rock record called Fear of the Dawn and a “very mellow” acoustic LP titled Entering Heaven Alive. Today, he’s shared the first track from the latter album with “Love Is Selfish.” Fear of the Dawn — which White previewed with the ferocious rocker “Taking Me Back” — arrives first on April 8th. Entering Heaven Alive follows on July 22nd.
To support both releases, White will head out on an extensive tour beginning in April. Spanning nearly 60 dates in total, the cleverly titled “Supply Chain Issues Tour” will see White play shows in the US, Canada, the UK, and Europe.
