The State is a daily rundown of the headlines that matter to the East Lansing, MI community.
Hi, and welcome to The State. I'm your host, Rebecca McAvoy. Today's date is 12/02/2025. The forecast predicts that the high will be 29 and the low being 12. The state brings you the stories that matter.
Speaker 1:Michigan State football snaps losing streak end season with win over Maryland. In Detroit, Michigan State football had not won a single game since September going into Saturday night's game at Ford Field. The Spartans had come close with some gut wrenching results in the past month, but no help to their inability to play a complete game. However, in the season final, redshirt junior defense back, Evan Gross, in his first start of the year, got perfectly underneath a lofted ball, locked down his first interception of the season, and ending the Spartan season on a high note. It took a total team effort as MSU took down Maryland with a 38 to 28 final.
Speaker 1:Jonathan Smith fired after two seasons at MSU. The Jonathan Smith era of Michigan State football has officially come to an end. After 24 games leading the program, Smith has been fired relieving himself of his coaching duties in East Lansing. The athletic department confirmed Sunday. Smith finishes his tenure at MSU with a nine fifteen overall record and a four fourteen mark against Big Ten opponents, including the vacated wins from 2024.
Speaker 1:It is appointing four eight campaign this season with just one Big Ten win and an eight game losing streak. The longest in program history ultimately led to the decision. Trump administration cuts diminished foreign language education at MSU. Fewer people are studying foreign languages at Michigan State University this semester. That's because the federal government has slashed funding for grant programs that have historically supported such scholarships across the country.
Speaker 1:The Department of Education has for decades administrated National Resource Centers, which were conceived during the Cold War, as means for The US to enhance its understanding of international affairs. The DOE has long distributed foreign language and area studies fellowships, which pay for undergraduate and graduate students' tuition when studying in such fields. Five MSU centers in past years received funding through the federal government's National Resource Center program. The MSU administrators who run those centers told in state news that they were notified by the DOE in September that they would not be receiving new grant funding for this academic year. MSU Museum set to reopen in January following a $28,000,000 renovation.
Speaker 1:The Michigan State University Museum is set to reopen its doors to the public on January 14 with new additions and exhibitions awaiting for visitors and guests. This comes after the MSU board of trustees approved the $28,000,000 renovation project for the century old building in 2021, with the renovation process beginning in 2024. The building holds historical value to the university since being created in 1857, just two years after MSU, then called the Agriculture College of the State of Michigan, was founded. MSU museum director Devin Ackman said the museum's history intertwined with MSU. It's hard to find other colleges and units that have lasted this long.
