Punchy, actionable insights and tips to make the life of the team leader a breeze.
[00:00:00] Pia: Team leaders are leading in an environment today that has significantly changed in many ways, being awesome as your skill or trade will only get you so far. So we are starting a mini-series of Connects, which over the following weeks will tackle the big rocks that team leaders need to get a handle on to really thrive in this new world of work. I'm Pia.
[00:00:23] Dan: And I'm Dan, and this is Squadify Connect. Yeah. Today many team leaders are operating in a hybrid, hybrid environment and may see only some of their people, some of the time. Others are facing external challenges with their team, really feeling the strain of stretch resources. I'm sure you'll recognize those situations yourself. But teams are more important than ever in delivering optimal outcomes, is only by combining diverse talents that we can really solve the rapidly changing problems of today.
[00:00:54] Pia: And team leaders are sometimes not developed or supported, or they assume that what got them promoted is what they need to keep doing. Wrong. That doesn't really work. Ram Charan et al, in a great book that we'd recommend. Call the Leadership Pipeline. Say that when you become a leader, you should stop doing some things to make space for leadership. It's a little bit like stepping from a jetty to a boat. You've got to let go. Otherwise, you'll end up in the water.
[00:01:26] Dan: Yeah, amazingly, this is a bit of education that's missed very often when people are promoted to become managers for their first time. But leaders need to look at their roles carefully and decide what they need to stop doing, start doing, and continue doing. Otherwise, you might find yourself overloaded or frustrated that your team doesn't deliver, and your team equally can feel like you don't trust them and you are just empowering them to do their own job.
[00:01:49] Pia: There's a link to a short video on the leadership pipeline in the show notes, and really recommend taking a look at that for a little bit more information on a really useful mental model for leadership.
[00:02:02] Dan: So here's a simple experiment for you for this week. Look at your to-do list for today. It's probably too long, like the rest of us. But identify what you do that is, that is on the task, and what is about leading your team. What would you say is a percentage split? Don't judge, just observe. What's the impact of the split that you currently. What do you think will be better to stop doing, start doing, and continue? Choose one thing this week, make a change and see what impact it has.
[00:02:32] Pia: So, Link your role as a team leader back to the work that you've done on your be, do, and have, and think about that. And then next week we'll introduce the conditions that you are responsible for in creating as a leader of your team. Be conscious about focusing on your actions and make the choice to do something different or even to stop doing good luck and see you next week.
