Built for the Trades

Welcome back to Built for the Trades! In this episode, today, we're diving into what truly separates stagnant plumbing businesses from those that scale into wealth and long-term impact—and it has nothing to do with having more tools or trucks. It starts in the mind of the leader.

Discussions

  1. Identify one person on your team who’s ready to take on more responsibility. Empower them. Invest in their growth. Give them a win.
  2. Delegate one task you’re still holding onto that’s limiting your leadership potential. Don’t just hand it off—train someone to own it.
  3. Reach out to one customer this week—not to sell, but simply to thank them. A 30-second call from the owner or leader can make a bigger impact than any discount.

Remember, great teams don’t build themselves. They’re developed by leaders who serve well, delegate smart, and lead by example. What is Built for the Trades?

How do you build a successful trade company? Find out how other trade company owners are finding success.

Dan Dowdy:

Hey, welcome back. Today, we're gonna talk about from wrenches to wealth and how to help smart leaders build profitable plumbing teams. Whether in your plumbing trade or any other trade, this episode is gonna bring you value. What if I told you the difference between a plumbing business that stays stuck and one that scales to serious success isn't just in the tools and the trucks, but in the way leaders think. Today, we're diving into how smart leadership builds profitable plumbing teams.

Dan Dowdy:

And not just with high fives and hopes, but with intentional growth strategies that impact your people, your processes, and ultimately your profits. Before we dive in, I want to give a shout out to our sponsor here today. I mean, this is something that every business owner has struggled with at one point or the other, and that's just getting paid on time. That's where Project Payment comes in. If you're tired of chasing checks or manually managing invoices, this tool is your new best friend.

Dan Dowdy:

With seamless digital invoicing, automated reminders, and easy payment options, Project A Payment helps you spend less time stressing over cash flow and more time leading your team. Check them out today because smart businesses don't just grow, they collect. Alright. So let's dive into the first topic. Leadership in the trades isn't about control, it's about ownership.

Dan Dowdy:

Let's kick things off with diving into leadership a little more because I'm not just talking about barking orders or being the first one in and the last one out every day. I'm talking about developing ownership across the team. When a technician feels like the work they do matters and that they are trusted to make decisions, they show up differently. Suddenly you got a problem solver instead of a task follower. Just think about your team as we go through this.

Dan Dowdy:

Here's a simple shift. Instead of telling someone exactly what to do every time, ask them, what do you think the best next step is? Empower their thinking. It builds confidence and confidence builds leaders. And when you build leaders at every level across your company, guess what else you're building?

Dan Dowdy:

Capacity. That is how you scale an organization. And speaking of scaling, let's talk about growth for a minute because leadership without direction is just noise. But when you lead with intention, that's when the business starts to move. The next topic I want to talk about today is business growth follows leadership growth.

Dan Dowdy:

Here's the hard truth. Your business will never outgrow your leadership. If you want your company to grow, you have to grow first. That means learning to delegate, creating clear expectations, and focusing on systems, not just putting out the fires. Start by asking yourself, what's one task that you're still doing that someone else on your team could handle?

Dan Dowdy:

If you're honest with yourself, I know no matter what level you're going to find that. Take the time to train them. Every time you hold onto a job that you've outgrown, you're holding your company back too. And a plumbing business grows when it runs on systems, not superheroes. So today, trade in the cape for a calendar and start building the kind of company that runs with or without you.

Dan Dowdy:

And look, no matter how good your leadership is and how efficient your systems are, none of it stick to that one key piece, your customers. So on this next topic, let's talk about the front lines of your brand. Topic three is customer service is also a leadership tool. A lot of folks think that customer service is something you can train, but it's actually something you model. Your team watches how you treat your customers.

Dan Dowdy:

They watch how you treat your vendors and even the guy that's delivering parts to your shop. They see you handle problems with patience and pride. That becomes the standard. So if you want to elevate your team's service, start recognizing it. Publicly praise the tech or the customer service rep who went above and beyond.

Dan Dowdy:

Share the wins, and here's a secret weapon. Follow-up with customers personally. A thirty second check-in call from the owner, just think about how awesome that would be. Those kind of details make customers feel like gold and builds loyalty you can't buy. Great customer service isn't a department, it's a culture, and cultures are built by leaders.

Dan Dowdy:

So let's bring all this together today. We talked about why real leadership means developing ownership and ownership at every level. We broke down how your personal growth as a leader sets the pace for your business growth, And we also wrapped it up with how great customer service is a leadership that builds loyalty and trust. So in closing, I want to challenge you. This week, pick one person on your team who's ready to take on more responsibility and give that person a chance.

Dan Dowdy:

Who is that person for you? Identify one task that you need to stop doing and start training someone else to own that task. And finally, reach out to one customer, not with the sales pitch, just a genuine appreciation. So if this episode brought you value, do me a favor, like it, share it, and subscribe so you don't miss what's coming next.
