The Path

A simple framework for identifying your true desires, and two practices for turning them into reality.

What is The Path?

Weekly talks about modern business, life strategy, and the path to self-mastery. Hosted by Taylor Allan.

the first rule of getting what you want is knowing what you want.
And that's not so easy because our desires are largely influenced by collective
culture, by our programming, by our friends, by, like, the noise of the world.
it's hard to sense, to get the signal through all of that noise.
So I have a framework here for exactly how to know, and it's,
it's really simple actually.
False desires exist only in the head.
True desires exist in the body.
If a desire is false, you'll feel it like a hollow sort of thought in the head.
"That sounds like it would be cool."
It's like a internalized should.
I should want that.
When I was twenty-three, I came up with the goal that I wanted $100 million net
worth at 30, and I, like, wrote this goal down every day for six months.
And slowly, I just, like, stopped writing it down and completely forgot about
it until literally I was, like, doing this talk, and I remembered I did that.
And at the time, I, I remember thinking, "I don't know what my goal should be,
so let's just make it 100 million." That was the whole thought process, and
I completely pulled it out of my ass.
It's like I, I don't know what I'm gonna do with 100 million.
I don't know why I need 100 million.
I don't… It's just 100 million, nice, round number, cool.
That was the extent of it.
Total head-based false desire,
So we need to mine those and pull them out by the root like weeds because
they're dispersing our, our attention and our energy across, uh, like, uh,
spreading it thin across a whole bunch of shit that we don't actually want.
And a huge piece of this process is focusing your true desire
on a point And directing all of your energy at that point.
So true desires, as we said, are in the body.
You will literally feel an increase in energy when you think about them and
when you consider them and when you move towards them And that energy might
not be this big wave you're surfing.
It might just be a flicker of curiosity or a pull
It might not be a full burning fire, it's just a tiny little flame or a spark.
That's fine, and most of them start that way.
Most of them start that way.
It's just an interest.
It's like, "Oh, that… There's something, like, pulling me there And
if you can trust that pull, I remember Adam, um, who many of you have met and
know, before he started the business he's running right now, the big, uh,
like three million a month business.
Very shortly before, he was building this AI info product.
and I remember him texting me, and he goes, "I don't know why I'm doing this,
but it just feels right. I'm not sure it's actually right, but it just feels
right right now, so I'm just like pulling the thread." And so he keeps on doing it,
and in the process, he started running meta ads to this like fifty-dollar
AI offer to build a customer list.
Like, cool.
It's going pretty well.
He's like breaking even.
It's not bad.
And in the process, he went deep down the rabbit hole of learning meta ads, learning
how to run a, run meta ads at scale.
And as a result, he started just randomly testing ads for his buddy's business,
which was kind of, uh, it was very flat.
They weren't doing much revenue.
He was having trouble getting that off the ground.
So Adam's like, "All right. I'll, I'll just like try running some
ads at it." The business next, next thing you know, fucking explodes.
And he texted me these screenshots almost every day.
It was like, "Oh, we did fifteen hundred bucks today.
We did five grand today.
We did ten grand today.
We did thirty grand today." And suddenly, next thing you know, he's spending sixty
grand a day on meta ads, and the AI thing is just like not happening anymore, and
they're doing three million a month.
So it was that like, "I don't know why I'm doing this, but like it feels right,
and I'm just gonna see where it goes."
He couldn't say where it was gonna go.
It was just a pull.
And if he hadn't got into the like little AI info product, running meta ads, like
he would've missed the step that took him to the thing that he's doing now.
You see?
So it can be a flame, but it can also just be a flicker.
Consider that.
So the false desires exist only in the head.
True desires exist in the body.
They also, though, still exist in the head.
So it's head plu- it's body plus head.
And this is where a lot of the, I think, New Age crowd sort of falls
apart with this shit because they're like, "Oh, it just feels right to
me," but there's no logic behind it.
like quitting your job to start a business when you have no money
in the bank and a family to feed.
It's like, yes, it might be right, but maybe it's not right right now.
There has to be a level of maturity and logic behind it, too.
That's, uh, important to say.
and there's also often gonna be conflicting things.
You might have to choose between desires.
And so you don't actually have to fulfill every desire.
That's not the point of the lesson.
There might be desires.
There are things I wanna do in my life that I just probably won't do.
And you sacrifice certain desires in favor of others, 'cause we only have so much
time and attention and, and resource.
The more desires you chase at any given time, the harder it is to get any
of them, and just keep that in mind.
Not every desire needs to be fulfilled.
So there's a practice here.
I'll leave you with a tool.
when you clarify what the desire is, stoke it like a fire.
So more desire equals more fuel, equals more propulsion towards what
you desire, and that's a practice.
So in the same way that we build the campfire, and we fan the flames,
and you might pour gasoline on it, you can do that with your desires.
When I was building EGT or Basketball Renegades, like the early, early,
early days, before I'd even made any money at all, I was constantly, like,
looking at pictures of the car I wanted to buy and reading articles about…
I, I would go on YouTube and just watch, like, montage videos of successful
people, and I would read books about entrepreneurs who are really
successful, biographies, constantly, like, saturating my mind with this idea
of being a successful entrepreneur.
It was just all-consuming.
And the other thing I did, it's a really surprisingly useful tool.
Adan mentioned visualization, right?
Were you just doing that, like visualizing in your mind?
Yeah.
So who here has practiced, like, mental visualization?
Most people.
Have you found it kind of difficult to sit there and, like, really hold your focus
on, like, a vivid image in your mind?
Here's the trick.
Do it in writing So write from the perspective of yourself having
attained whatever the thing is, living in the reality that you desire.
Write as though you're living it.
How does it feel?
What thoughts do you think?
What is your external reality Write that and really track how
the internal desire begins to grow.
And maybe you start writing something and you're like, "Actually, that
doesn't feel right anymore," and the desire begins to change and clarify.
And that's another key point is that as you move towards what you
desire, what you really desire will actually come into focus.
It's very rare that you start out knowing exactly what the thing is that you want.
Just like the artist that begins writing the book, and they probably,
even if they think they know how it ends or what the exact plot structure
will be, almost guaranteed it never is what they think it's gonna be.
So as you move towards the desire and clarify it, it will become clearer to you.
And the writing is a really good tool, not only for doing that, but
just actually stoking the desire.
Write written visualization.
Try that.
Try that.
And the other, the final little tool, as you're falling asleep, because as
you're falling asleep, your unconscious mind is opening up, you might start
to see like mental pictures and kind of dream while you're still awake
when you're in that in-between state.
Anybody notice that?
The practice that you can try, this is something I used to do all the time,
is as you're falling asleep, begin to envision and put yourself in that
reality, to visualize it, but not only visualize it, like really feel it.
How does it feel to live on the West Coast and wake up and go in your sauna,
go in the ocean or whatever it was?
How does it feel to be in the reality where you've built the $100,000 or
$500,000 or million dollar a month business and you're, you're… How,
how does that confidence feel that you walk through the world with every day?
When you found your dream life partner, you know, you can literally be in
bed and be visualizing feeling it as though she's sleeping beside you,
and put yourself in that reality.
It'll begin to saturate not just your conscious mind, but
your unconscious mind too.
When I was a kid, I had, like really young, I must've been like five years
old, every time I, I fell asleep for a period of time, I would go into this
imaginary world where I had this, like, playground house with all my friends,
and we'd all, like, fuck around on the playground all day, and I had all this
sick Nike gear that I wanted, and, like, the Nike shoes, and all you know?
I just, like, had all the toys and all the shit I wanted, and I'd, like,
play around in this little reality.
And it was really vivid.
As a kid, our imagination is a lot more active typically, and then
school gets ahold of us and just fucking throws a wet towel on it.
But in those days, I used to really look forward to going to bed at night.
I was, like, living in that little world I'd created.
And so it's the same idea.
You live in this world that you're creating, and that muscle of
visualization, the, uh, the, the skill of it, will begin to grow and
cultivate, and it'll become more vivid.
And the goal is not just to see it in your mind, but to feel it in your body too.
So if you do that as you're falling asleep every night, it's going to s- continuously
stoke and clarify and cultivate the desire which will propel you forwards.
So this is the process.
Um, and I actually think this-- like th-this is a big statement to close,
but I actually think this process is the meaning of life, of human life.
I think turning desires into reality within this process is
what we're here to actually do.
And if you think about the question, the meaning of life, we've
spoken about this before, right?
Life is an absolute, so you can't say what the meaning of it is
because it's like saying what the meaning of the color red is.
Red is red.
Like, what's the meaning of a wave?
It is the meaning in and of itself.
So life has no meaning in the same way that a blank canvas has no
meaning until it's given meaning.
Life is the sort of blank canvas, and we are the artist that gives it meaning.
That's what turning desires into reality really is, is creating the
meaning of your life as your work of art, your ultimate work of art, and
living your life as a work of art.
So we are the, the artist and the paintbrush.
we are how life creates meaning and what gives meaning to life
So this is the process you do it through.
Go and do it.
Bye.
Bang.
Bang.
Can you send that quote?
Nah.
Fuck.
Manifest it, dog.
