Always looking to help you and connect with others. All right, let's get into it, shall we?
[00:00:43] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Welcome back to the show. If you were around last week, we talked about burdens and responsibilities, and I'm really hopeful that that was helpful for you and that it's helped guide you to create more capacity for this stuff that you're responsible for this year. That topic came from a retreat that I held for a, group called Rise and Thrive, the alum community that I've been working with these folks, that a new group for seven years.
[00:01:16] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And as I was thinking about. Recording something for the folks that were unable to make the retreat. I thought, you know what? How about those would be good podcast episodes as well. And so we have another one coming at you today, which helps us understand you know, we're human beings, but what are the things that make up how we move through the world every day?
[00:01:44] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And so there are three. Things that we're going to talk about today that in combination really define who you are and how you move through the world. And those three things are beliefs. Our state. Of being the nervous system state that we're in, and the patterns that flow from those. And so I'm going to give you a description of each one and some examples of how they work together.
[00:02:15] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And then I'm going to give you a kind, a step by step. How do I discern which of these, if any, I might need to adjust to have? Better outcome, better life. Sound like a plan? here we go. Your belief is what you are assuming is true right now in that situation. beliefs aren't always truths.
[00:02:46] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Sometimes we believe things that aren't actually true, but we hold them so close, so dear to us that in our hearts and minds they feel true. And so those are the ones that are a little tricky, and it's why I love my faith, because I check in and ask myself if what I'm believing holds up with what God says is true.
[00:03:14] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Because that's truth. That's truth that I can take to the bank, y'all. But sometimes our beliefs aren't lined up with truth. And so that's a, a place to check yourself before you wreck yourself. As they say, your state is how your body and your nervous system feel. last episode I talked a lot about the difference between a state of love and connection.
[00:03:40] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Versus a state of fear and protection. So your state is your nervous system state, and then patterns flow kind of out of autopilot from those things.
[00:03:54] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: here's a couple examples to illustrate how these work. The first one is that. High achieving always on. The belief that flows from that person is, if I'm not producing or contributing, I'm falling behind. And when that is your belief and PS, let's test that to what God says. Is that what God says is true?
[00:04:19] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Nope. God says you need rest You need to go off. To yourself and pray and rest and get sleep. And he says at all. but sometimes, and I lived there for a couple decades with the belief that if I wasn't producing and contributing, I was falling behind. So no shame, no judgment around here ever, but we're just being more aware of who we are and making sure that we are aligning ourselves to the life that we want.
[00:04:48] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: So if that's your belief. The state that your nervous system is typically in that flows from that belief is internally always feeling rushed. Your chest is tight, you have difficulty slowing down. The nervous system stays in go mode. That's what feels safest. And when I was in that belief of if I'm not producing, I'm falling behind.
[00:05:16] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: I had a hard time even just sitting on the couch and watching a movie with my children. In fact, my kids would say to me, can we watch a movie without your laptop? Sad but true because I felt like I had to be doing something. Sitting with my children in love and connection and laughing at their movie and watching their reactions wasn't enough for me.
[00:05:44] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: My nervous system felt like you're going to get behind. Why don't you catch up on email while you're watching this movie? Multitasking always. so the pattern that flows from that belief and that nervous system state is overworking, which is what I was doing with my laptop while I was watching, you know, Zootopia or something.
[00:06:05] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Yes. I went to see Zootopia too with my adult daughter. This weekend and it was really good. Yes, we are still going to see cartoons. I did not take my laptop. I took my blanket to the movie theater and it was fabulous. Reclining seats. Now that's the snizzle man. If they would've had those when my kids were little, I'd have been taking them to every single movie there was.
[00:06:26] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And having my movie naps, which is also what I used to do, it's really little. 'cause you know, sometimes a mom needs a little nap. so the pattern is overworking. Saying yes too often, struggling to rest even when rest is available. And that's what I was doing. So what's happening underneath is your body, when that's your belief, doesn't feel safe to stop.
[00:06:52] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And for some then that belief turns into a burden, which was last week's topic where we feel like it's all on me. If I'm not taking care of everything all the time, everything falls apart for me and everybody else. And for some it's
[00:07:10] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: switching that belief to I need to learn to trust that others, or even just trust that God's in it with me, so that I don't take on that burden of believing that it's all on me. Whenever we can align our belief with God's truth, that is the overarching true of all truths, no matter what. Another example, if your belief is trying to keep the peace at all costs, and you believe that if I speak up or disappoint somebody, I'm going to lose connection.
[00:07:50] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: I'm going to lose opportunity. I'm just going to lose. It's just going to be bad. Then your nervous system state stays guarded, hyper aware, always scanning for, is everybody okay with me and with each other? Probably. And so the pattern that flows from that is to be people pleasing, avoiding the hard conversation, and always agreeing outwardly, but inside feeling maybe bitter and resentful.
[00:08:23] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: So what's happening is connection, real connection. We have real conversations, feels fragile, like I probably shouldn't do this. And so the nervous system will refrain from honesty because it doesn't want to cause disconnection. So you keep the peace. But it actually is avoidance. It's not actually peace, because if it was actually peace, you'd have inner peace about it.
[00:08:53] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: You wouldn't have resentment. if we line this one up to God's truth, the belief that if I speak up or disappoint someone, I could lose connection. That one doesn't hold true either. Because he says, speak honestly with love and have, truthful conversations with one another. And so if we want real peace, the shalom of God, nothing missing, nothing broken, inner peace and outer peace, then we need to have tough conversations sometimes and know again that God will be with us.
[00:09:25] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And if our intent is to do it from a place of love, that it will. Create a greater sense of peace in ourselves by having the conversation. Another example is if the belief is, if I get this wrong, whatever this is, whatever situation you're in, if I get this wrong, it's going to cost me my reputation or another opportunity, or my boss isn't going to like me, or my client isn't going to like me, like I can't ever get anything wrong.
[00:09:52] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: That creates a nervous system state where you just. Get frozen from making decisions because you are afraid that you'll get it wrong, and so you keep really busy doing other things. Using the busyness is the reason not to address some of the other stuff, so the pattern becomes procrastination. Busy work, delaying the thing that really matters most.
[00:10:22] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: because underneath it all. It's not laziness, it's fear. You're protecting yourself against this belief of, I can't get this wrong, so fear replaces the trust and control takes over. I'm going to not have the conversation. I'm going to control this thing so I don't have to have the conversation and so across all three of these examples.
[00:10:48] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: The belief is the one that's causing the pressure or the need to protect yourself. And so the nervous system state doesn't get to a place of love and connection. It stays in a place of protection and then your pattern, your behavior is what's falling from that. Just subconsciously. Your autopilot is the nervous system is coping.
[00:11:15] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: It's not actually living full of love and connection and unity and peace. So here's a few steps to assess what might be causing you challenges, whether it's a belief in what state of the nervous system that is causing and what patterns. The first step is when
[00:11:35] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: when you feel in some kinda way. So basically you're feeling in a way that you don't wanna feel that way anymore. Enter whatever that is for you. So step one is you're going to pause and notice what am I actually feeling? Am I feeling rushed? Am I feeling irritated, anxious shut down? What am I actually feeling?
[00:12:01] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Just the pause itself to take a series of breaths. And when you do this breath work to get perspective, the best way to do it, five rounds. Inhale for five counts through your nose, hold it for one, and then exhale for seven counts out your mouth. So always a longer exhale than an inhale and it takes. All of 30 seconds, and people are surprised how quickly you feel better.
[00:12:29] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Take a pause, take your five rounds of breaths, and then just ask yourself, what might I be believing right now? Not what's true. But what is operating in my beliefs that might be causing me to feel some kind of way. some of the things that might flow from that question to yourself is, I believe that it's all on me.
[00:12:57] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Or I believe I can't disappoint anyone. I believe I can't slow down. I believe I can't get it right. I don't know what yours is, but you do. What might I be believing right now in this moment? once you've identified that for yourself, then ask yourself, what state am I in? Don't try to explain it away.
[00:13:18] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Don't try to put a story attached to the state of being. Just what am I feeling in my body? In my body, the physical feeling in my body? Am I calm? Am I tense? Am I open or guarded? Am I rushed? Am I clear? Am I foggy? How does my body feel and take note of that. And then pattern. So based on that belief and what my nervous system state, what my body is feeling, what pattern or what autopilot do I feel like I should do right now?
[00:13:55] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: What do I usually do right now? no judgment. Is it right or wrong? We're just going to observe ourselves. We're not going to just immediately go into fix it mode. So the pattern that you might be pulled towards, it might be overworking, people pleasing, avoiding procrastinating, controlling, withdrawing.
[00:14:16] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: I don't know. But I want you to notice what that autopilot next step might be. From that belief and that nervous system state. And then after you've observed yourself in those three things, belief, state pattern, then you're going to ask yourself, is this belief serving me or protecting me? Have I seen this belief, create these patterns before?
[00:14:49] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Patterns I probably don't, want. And one of my favorite questions to ask about beliefs is, does this belief line up with what God says is true? Because if it doesn't, it's probably a counterfeit, it's something that you've chosen to believe, to protect yourself, and it's not actually true. So it's not serving you well, it's not giving you inner peace.
[00:15:15] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: So then you're going to create safety first before you can make any changes, before you can declare anything that you're going to do differently. We have to create safety for ourselves. So before taking any next step. You're going to help your body settle so that you can get into a regulated, calm, grounded state of love connection.
[00:15:42] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And then from that place where you have access to your prefrontal cortex and real good creativity and good decision making, then you can make a choice to move forward. But first, we're going to do those slow breaths. We're going to take a walk. We're going to be still, we're going to pray, reflect. Remember that it's not all on you.
[00:16:03] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: You're not ever alone. God is always with you. And once you feel more grounded, then you have access to clarity, courage, compassion, discernment, creativity, so much more, better options than the autopilot that your dysregulated state was going to put you into. So then from a steadier place, you can say. Okay, what's one small response that I can choose that aligns with who I want to be?
[00:16:42] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And the more that you can align your beliefs with who you want to be, then you stay in a more regulated state and your patterns will flow from that. Sometimes we just work on that regulated state. Then we view those beliefs as they pop up. any of those three are going to give you the kind of wisdom and discernment and reflection that you need to make the kind of decisions that are going to create the life that you want with peace, both inside and around you.
[00:17:20] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: But again, I talked about this last week. It's not always about comfort. Life is hard. Work is hard. There's lots of situations that are challenging that's not going to change. So if we're waiting to feel peace, until everything around us is peaceful, What we wanna do is find that inner peace, even when things are situationally. And circumstantially a bit chaotic around you. I hope this is helpful. If you have questions, if you wanna talk more about it, you know what to do.
