Siemens Mobility is investing approximately €150 million to expand its service depot in Dortmund-Eving - to meet the growing demand for rail services. Plans call for constructing an additional 12,300 m² service hall with storage facility, offices, and workshops to handle the maintenance of trains up to 400 meters long. Construction of the new building is scheduled to begin this year and be completed by 2026. The Siemens Mobility depot in Dortmund previously had a total area of 70,000 m² and will cover 157,550 m² when the project is completed.
The digital depot in Dortmund has been in operation since 2018. When the new facility is completed in 2026, the service centre will have up to 250 employees. At present, the Siemens Mobility depot primarily maintains trains from the RRX fleet operating throughout the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region. With its added capacity, the depot will be able to service and maintain more trains from other fleets as well.
The arrival of the Eastern Routes Partnership (ERP) will allow the region to award key infrastructure improvement works directly to supply chain partners throughout the railway’s new control period (CP7), championing collaboration and efficiency.
ERP will be in place for all five years of CP7, with the option to extend for up to five years from 2029 (CP8). Building this stability between the region and its partners means the supply chain will already be on-board when the work bank for CP8 is developed.
The framework also removes the need for individual procurement events. This will save valuable time, make the region’s work better value for money, and allow for earlier collaboration between the region and its partners in each project.
Rail freight booking service RailX is one of a number of transport partners that will work alongside startup companies to develop artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions to industry challenges.
As part of Digital Catapult’s High Growth AI Accelerator for transport programme, the company will work to drive the adoption of AI and machine learning as it works to solve ongoing operational challenges, whilst also progressing decarbonisation and efficiency goals.
“There is huge potential for AI to have a transformative effect on both efficiency and productivity for these projects spanning from London to north-east England and across different transport modes”
