According to Axios, The Department of Education just withheld more than $67 million from school districts over diversity, equity and inclusion programs. Biola actually cut its own Office of Diversity and Inclusion more than a year ago, and that move looks different now in light of the federal crackdown. While Biola isn’t losing funds like public schools, it’s still tied to the bigger debate over federal oversight, accreditation, and religious liberty.
According to Reuters, the White House is warning agencies to prepare for mass layoffs and service interruptions if the government shuts down on October 1. For Biola students, this could be serious. A shutdown could delay federal financial aid for low-income students and stall visa processing for international students. That means disruptions could hit both current students and those trying to enroll.
A fifth-grade girl from the U.K., Bodhana Sivanandan, is dominating the chess scene, defeating adult champions decades older than her, and becoming the world’s youngest female international master. According to NBC News, when she was just five years old, her father taught her how to play. Within weeks, she began to regularly win matches against her dad. Since then, videos on YouTube have gone viral, with Bodhanna defeating veteran players from all regions. Many believe that this would be the start of a professional chess career for the young Bodhana.
That’s all for last week’s headlines. Now, let’s dive into what’s happening this week at Biola.
