[01:00:10] Craig Why, the Yankee City. It was 17 years ago where you discovered arguably the greatest female rapper of all time, Nicki Minaj. So when you call her, do you remember the phone call? Yeah. College football is back. If you wagered on and lost, I feel for ya, but it's back.

[01:00:31] Craig And Carolina BTCU over there now.
[01:00:32] Wayne I'll watch that game like it was the Super Bowl.
[01:00:39] Craig Why? I love you. That's your dude. Well, you also got to visit the campus last year, right?
[01:00:44] Wayne Yeah, I love it, you know, because you know I got Mensa and Mensa was at Duke at the time Right and so I I went over there to go rub it in his face

Because how do you know what to do with money when you're a certain age? I got fame and all the things that come with it. So how did you handle it when you started making real money? Reality. Teenagers.

[01:01:37] Craig Meaning you made mistakes and learned...
[01:01:38] Wayne Mistakes and learn from it? Yeah, so I deal with reality first, meaning I'm gonna get my people straight, I'ma get this straight, I'm a get y'all good. So I did that first, once I did that then I had to, like you said, I had learn the hard way.
[01:01:51] Craig By making mistakes or being stupid with money and
[01:01:53] Wayne If I make a mistake, you don't even know you're making because you're just unintelligent to any of that knowledge.
[01:02:01] Craig Yeah, I never should have gotten that Sprinter or that.
[01:02:04] Wayne You're crazy. I've just become an Esperanto before, you know.
[01:02:08] Craig So the first thing I did was I had a Chevy Suburban and I gutted it. I made it a limo for one and a half, all right? Okay? And it had your seat that, you know, push a button becomes a bed because I had long drive to work. I swear to you. And I had driver. You had a driver for the Suburba? Yeah, yeah. I said I was being stupid. I had money in my pocket for the first time in my life. And so I fired the driver three times. The first time I fired him The dude ran out of gas.
[01:02:40] Wayne On the New Jersey Turnpike.
[01:02:42] Craig Right, like you only have one job Good job.
[01:02:44] Wayne Deserved to be fired.
[01:02:45] Craig He ran across the New Jersey turnpike with a gas can. I'm like, dude, like, call AAA. Like, we're pulled over to go get gas. He was panicked. I bring him back because I'm loyal and stupid. Then my wife finds another woman's panties in the car.
[01:03:02] Wayne Oh, no, come on. I swear. That's the Parasite story. Go ahead. You ever saw the movie? No, that happened in the movie. Parasit. OK, was the guy guilty or not guilty? No, the guy was just like you. The guy that the show it was the show was the chauffeur's doing. Yes, it was.
[01:03:19] Craig And they were bigger than the normal panties I might be interested in. So I say to my wife, I go, listen, you've every right to think I'm doing bad things, but look at the size of the drawers. Like, you know full well I have no interest in that. So the guy in a cop suit, he goes, yeah, I dropped Craig off and I picked my wife up from work and one thing led to another and I'm like, man, now you gotta go. And then I fired him for real on that one. No, you had to. I had to, yeah.
[01:03:47] Wayne I gave him a couple of chances. You fired him. I'm surprised. I would have fired- Dude, I sold-
[01:03:51] Wayne Suburban fired on him What I got rid of that car within a week you should have yeah, that's thank you Absolutely, I can't even believe that wouldn't even know how to approach
[01:04:02] Craig My wife made that phone call.
[01:04:04] Wayne She's like
[01:04:04] Craig She's like, I need to know the truth right now. Cause if he's cheating on me, I needed to know.
[01:04:07] Wayne I'm glad. Okay, yeah, so he had to make that phone call.
[01:04:11] Craig I go, baby, this one, like, come on, give me a little credit.
[01:04:17] Wayne I wilded out in somebody's habitat before, so I know this.
[01:04:23] Craig Yeah, it's a weird feeling, I suppose, right?
[01:04:26] Wayne They just have this crazy hotel and I mean these crazy condos in Miami where when you get on the elevator You whoever whatever the floor is your room is your house Your your condo your condos are used so you not you would never get on there and press the wrong floor because it can't Go to it

[01:04:43] Wayne And if it does, then you better go walk in somebody's house. And so I remember when I would, yeah, I remember I would freak with myself with a nice young lady there when I was younger. And it was the first place I ever moved in when I in Miami, so I had to be like 19. And I remember, when I went and went to, like when you would come to mine, I had this big old young money door. So in case you did mess up by mistake, you got there, you're like, oh shit, I know who place this is. Is when I remember her shit open man it was such it was like that's that's your hoarder hoarders yeah or yeah yeah it was so I was like where's like where is the bed she was like baby whatever she didn't know yeah wherever you want the bed to be yeah it's interesting I was that's
[01:05:29] Craig I assume you didn't sleep over.
[01:05:31] Wayne Oh no, no, she's married.
[01:05:33] Craig Oh yeah, that stopped you.

[01:05:42] Wayne It was a good, yeah. After you get off the elevators, it would be just like the elevator door with the YM right now. That's awesome. Before the Yankees sued me.

[01:06:04] Wayne Nah, I stopped using a logo. I just changed my logo. Really? That's so petty. I respected it today. Legends. I respected that.

[01:06:12] Wayne I felt I was you know, I felt more cooler getting a letter from the Yankees
[01:06:20] Craig So just go back to the story you're telling. How did you wind up learning or knowing who to trust when you're a kid and that the money's real?
[01:06:28] Wayne So what happened was I was on tour, and I was going to tour out the country. And so when you're out of the country, you're a bit of, especially way back then, when there wasn't too much social media like we have it now. You're a little bit unattached to what's going on in the country and so I was stuck getting a few phone calls and it's like, man, you know, I noticed the tones of the phone call. You know, it's just like, man, I'm sorry about that. Like, sorry about what? And then my mom called and she's like, you okay? You know, now I really need to find out, cut on the telephone, they sent it to me. That day the feds had went into my house and took all my art, took all of my Grammys, and took everything. Yeah, they took everything, so I'm like, what did I do, and why are they taking my stuff? But when I'm watching it, I see a guy on there withstanding with the police that I know. You know, I'm like, well, why is he with police? And why didn't he point that stuff? He'd be like picking up, he'd be shopping. And so we get in touch with him and find out that he's the guy who helped me get the art. He helped me buy whatever art I wanted to buy. He put me into the art world. So I find out, that guy is, I owe that guy. And that's why he's in there with the feds, just picking out stuff. Like, I think that might be enough that, I think, that might amount enough to, I'm like.
[01:07:55] Craig To cover what you owed him.
[01:07:57] Wayne Yeah, so I called him like, hey, why do I owe you? He like, dwing. You owe me like, I'm like, what? I'm, like, how could I possibly? I don't, like you the homie. Right. He like, you don't know that? So clearly he figured in my tone that I was clueless. So he told me, he was like, he was, like I already know what happened. So he helped me, let me know that I was being f***ed by who he knew. So he knew that the guy was a little, yeah, he knew who I had as my financial person. He knew the guy who was a a little off. So that's how my. That's the
[01:08:30] Craig Those stories piss me off.
[01:08:31] Wayne But that's how it is.
[01:08:32] Craig Because you're just taking advantage of someone who, just life experience, doesn't know about it, and he's still there.
[01:08:35] Wayne I didn't know about it yet and so that that was my part. So don't you want

[01:08:41] Wayne I was fine. I just wanted to make sure I get my art and stuff back. Yeah, put it back.

[01:08:48] Wayne Yeah, and so you know that that was a huge huge, you know, I mean
[01:08:54] Craig Makes it hard to trust people also.
[01:08:55] Wayne And also learn if you're going to do any kind of business with someone and especially if it's personal business and you You probably want to know a bit of everything
[01:09:05] Craig Um, you're, I know you're not going to know this. It was 17 years ago, right around this time of year where you discovered arguably the greatest female rapper of all time, Nicki Minaj. And I always wondered, I've heard you tell stories before that you were looking for a new artist assigned to young money, but what was it about her that caught your ear 17 years? Like, how did you know?
[01:09:27] Wayne I really believed that female hip-hop came from New York. You know, like they had to come from homegrown New York, first of all. Specifically. Specifically, yeah. So I didn't know if I'd land somebody that was already had a name. You know what I mean?
[01:09:43] Craig And what do you do? You put out the word, I'm looking for an artist, or you just started going to clubs.
[01:09:47] Wayne At that time they was doing this thing, they used to do this, they kind of still do it, it's just not popular like that no more because we got so much other things. But they used do like these little rap battles. But they were very popular. You know what I mean? So it was like that. So I could, whenever I, when I wanted to decide, like look for some talent, that's, it was easier to just, let me check this out, oh man I really like that person, who is that, see who they with. And also those rappers in that battle are also approaching that battle, knowing that the eyes and ears will be watching them. So they kind of been, they know they're being scouted as well.
[01:10:23] Craig Right, so it's a big moment for them. Ice-T told me a story that when he was a West Coast guy, he had 6 a.m., 6 in the morning, right? He comes east and no one knew who he was, really. And at the time, there was like a big, there was a cop shooting in New York and people thought 6 in morning was actually.
[01:10:38] Wayne About it, which was it wasn't and then so you know this
[01:10:41] Craig And then he goes, I forget the name of the place, who's in like Times Square. And he goes in to prove himself in front of a New York audience. And he met MC Light in the back. And she killed it. And he was like, holy shit, she's better than I am.
[01:10:54] Wayne Mm-hmm.
[01:10:55] Craig But that's where he kind of his stripes. That's where people respected him. He's not just like a West Coast kind of, and his stuff was kind of lollipop stuff early on before he became like hardcore.
[01:11:04] Wayne Exactly
[01:11:05] Craig But he tells a similar story about how MC Lyte got discovered. Yeah, so similar. So when you walk into a place like that, you have to go incognito because Little Wayne shows up and say, holy shit, Wayne's here.
[01:11:16] Wayne That's why I'm saying they were popular, so popular. They're being filmed and put and being sold on DVDs. Got it. Yeah, so I'm just watching them and then, you know, so just like sports, if you watch the first battle and you'll see who win that one, you'll that person keep graduating throughout the event. They're battling this person, that person, this person and they kill. And so, you find out if you see or hear something you like, you do.
[01:11:42] Craig So when you reach out to Nikki, I don't even, what's her name? Nicki Minaj at that time?
[01:11:46] Wayne Nika.
[01:11:47] Craig Onika. Okay. She wasn't using a, it's using a real name.
[01:11:50] Wayne I think she just, no, she's been Nicki Minaj since day one. Got it, okay. Actually, here she is, yeah.
[01:11:56] Craig So when you call her, do you remember the phone call?
[01:11:58] Wayne Uh, yeah, it was through the, you know, it was, I think Mac, Mac introduced, like introduced, walked, I think I met all, it was her, Jay Mills, that's a kid from, another kid from New York. He was from the band, Puffy's show that was on MTV. Okay. They had already, um, put out album split and all that by then. So he was a solo artist, but he was known for battle rapping. So much so to where that was Diddy's reason for putting him in the group. Because he felt I need a battle rapper type. Like a legit. Yeah, exactly. And so he had Mills. So once I found out they weren't together and it wasn't a real thing anymore, I snatched him up as well. Got it. Yeah, and so I met him all at once. Just like, this is Mills, this isn't me. Let him know how I feel about him. And what surprised me the most was I didn't expect Nikki to know nothing about us. Cause she's New York. She's New york.

[01:12:52] Wayne Yeah, I expected Jake Mills to know cuz he's a rapper and he just into rap I thought you know a female from New York ain't even checking for us Also, I thought that you know I had New York female friends and they used to tell me that they couldn't listen to my shit cuz they kind of thought It was pop lollipop something y'all make shake your ass music That's what they would tell me you know you y'al make doctor like Luke music right and I hated that but that they would Always put us in a category

[01:13:20] Wayne And that was also a reason why I rap so much.
[01:13:23] Craig Because you want to change that narrative.

Larian Tuscaloosa writes us and says, Wayne, my girlfriend doesn't like when I use your music as our mood music. Any recommendations for what I should play when it's time to get it on?
[01:19:43] Wayne Not Lil Wayne. Clearly. Clearly. Yes. If I have to issue any advice, that would be one stone. The other would be, if I had to give you a recommendation, I would say, catch some Drake on. Can't go wrong, because he's going to start singing some word on the line. You'll be all right.
[01:20:02] Craig Okay. So there's your advice. Uh, that's Larry and Tuscaloosa. Um, I know you would tell me months ago, but it's public now. You have a son that was offered a scholarship to kick, uh, at Colorado. Yes. Play for Dion. Yes, of course. And also had a game winning field goal. I just saw the video of it, but when your son called you up and said, pops, you're not going to believe this. I got a division one scholarship to Kick at Colorado what's, what's your guttural reaction when you get that call?
[01:20:30] Wayne Of course, there's every amazing emotion that you can name, but given his situation, he's a soccer player by nature. And so taking up kicking was just something he started doing about two years ago, two summers ago.
[01:20:45] Craig It's not that long.
[01:20:46] Wayne Just to better for soccer on his off season. And so he, on his own, ended up working out with Martin Anderson's son, Martin Anderson. The famous Saints kicker. The famous saints kicker, he working out with his son. I'm like, wait, what? I'm, like, Tony, that's really kicking. I'm just doing this while I'm not doing soccer. And he was like, yeah, I know. He's got me looking real good. And so his coach. Saw what he was doing and told him, come try out. And he made the team at his school. Once he made that team, he did really well. He was recommended to go to the school he's at now, which is a real, much better for kickers and athletics, period. And so.
[01:21:31] Craig Like a better football program price.
[01:21:33] Wayne He's that that's why sports center and ESPN was there at his first game.
[01:21:37] Craig They just happen to be there.
[01:21:38] Wayne Yeah, they just happened to be the school that they were playing that all the all the schools are really they're like I guess the top two schools in the current and they say, you know, I mean in Georgia and said when I got there I saw the SC next signs. Okay everywhere. Yeah, but you know the next that mean that they highlighting next Exactly. Yes. I'm like like As his mom like She's like, your son! And I should just like, no, this whole game's on TV. I was like, wait, what? And shoot, I go to my phone and find it. I'm like, oh my god, come on.
[01:22:16] Craig So you watch that game.
[01:22:17] Wayne I was there, I went to the game live. Yeah, but I still had it on my phone to hear the man on the phone, to hear a man on TV, kept saying, Dwayne Carter, that was amazing. That was absolutely amazing.
[01:22:28] Craig Because it's awesome to see your kids be successful, and it's not because of you.
[01:22:34] Wayne Is because of merit.

[01:22:41] Wayne No. So, he gets, you know, I get alerted about he's got a scholarship for, you know, for offering a scholarship to Colorado. Yeah. So of course, first thing I do is call Unc. Right. And then as you've also talked about, you go through certain life experiences, you hope to become a better person. So he comes back to the Jets. I'm doing my show from Jet Camp, my radio show. And I reached out to the jets and I said, you know what? It's time to be the bigger man. He and I need to get together and just figure it out one way or the other, man to man, face to face. And he was willing to do it.

My son, who, you know, Anthony, he don't know he's not supposed to be their he's loading up his plate with prime rib. The best buffet I've ever seen. I look around like this kid in there. Gino grabs me and pulls me into the indoor facility. My sons look around, like, we're dog. Oh, shit. He's a genius with that. Who knows if they fight like we don't get along. And it was a great conversation. I go look, I can't apologize for what I did. I'm not gonna because I would go back in time. I'd probably do it again. But I'm a different person now. And he goes, you know what, I was insecure. I was immature when I came into the league. I mean, if everything you said about me was probably right. He goes, but that shit stung. I go, how do you think I felt? I go your shit stunk too. And we dapped it up and
