The Stand Outdoors

Hosted by Dave Baker and Mike Hayes, we highlight the importance of understanding the pre-rut, which typically occurs in the last three weeks of October in Pennsylvania, and emphasize the use of rattling tools and grunting to attract bucks. We also share personal anecdotes and spiritual insights, including the significance of being humble.

Hey everyone, welcome back to the stand outdoors podcast, the show where faith and the great outdoors come together. I'm Dave Baker along with the founder of the stand outdoors, Mike Hayes, and today we're talking about the pre rut, what it is, what to look for, and the best way to hunt it. And Mike, that's going to be exciting, because we're we're getting closer and closer now it's coming to the hunt. But we wanted to remind you, if you want to have Mike come out and speak to your group, we'd love to have you contact us, right?

Speaker 2 1:00
Mike, that's right. We do. You know, we'd love to come out. And if you're looking for a speaker for your you know your your Sportsman's dinners and different things like that, we'd love to do it. And you can just go to the contact page on our website, the standout doors.com, put in your information. Also, another thing that might help. I'm getting some calls about people that they want to do the free Bible study. It's a six week, you know, Bible study, but they they're not sure how to do it. They never did one. There is, there is a and the Leaders Guide. There is a section on a how to section on how to do it right and but if you, if you're close enough within an hour or so, you know, and you want me to come out and do maybe the first one, kick it off. Kick it off. Yeah, that would be great. Another idea that people have come up with is there, instead of doing it, you know, in a men's group or small group on a weekly basis, or bi weekly basis, they do it and invite a lot of hunters. And they do it like a monthly basis, like do one EP or one lesson for each month, for six months, and then they can, you know, advertise it, and it's, they just invite the hunters to come out as a six month thing. They do it. And I thought that was pretty creative, and they could probably get more people and do it, maybe in a bigger area, you know, maybe the sanctuary, or whatever, you know, and but yeah, any let us know if you need help with this, because we want to see you guys getting equipped and the word of God and growing and taking a stand for Christ.

Speaker 1 2:38
I love it. Well, it's the pre ruts coming here in September, for all you bow hunters. And if you don't know even what the rut is, it's when the boy deer chase the girl deers. Okay, that's really, really what it is. And it starts early, because some of the girl deers come into estrus early. And we want to talk a little about today of how that pre rut happens, what we should be prepared for, and how we hunt it.

Speaker 2 3:08
Yeah, the the rut is usually, I mean, the pre rut, excuse me, the pre rut is usually, you know about it's around the last three weeks of October in Pennsylvania, in Pennsylvania, that's true. You go down to Florida, and they got about 16 pre ruts. It's the strangest thing from Yeah, not that many. But, you know, they, they have a lot of ruts, but, but we actually have three in Pennsylvania, 10% of the dough, the older does they come into estrus, you know, before the main rest of them, yeah, and it's usually, I find it's right around what they call the October law. There's not no October law around here on October 20, it's, you will see bucks popping up everywhere, the big bucks that you haven't seen except at night, you know, on your cameras. But right around the 20th, I thought 18, from the 18th to like the 20th a sweet spot. It's and I believe it's when those older does are coming into estrus and the bucks, they know it, and they know there's only 10% of them. They have their calculators out and they're figuring 10% okay, okay, boys, but they and they know they have to find them first, you know, because there's not that many of them. So they are bouncing around looking for these 10% and sometimes it could be your best time in the woods. It's crazy, but it doesn't last long.

Speaker 1 4:36
I love that early chasing. Yeah, it is great. Seeing bucks running through the woods gets me excited,

Speaker 2 4:42
but, but the main part of the pre rut is the territorial ism of the big, big bucks. They're making their scrapes, they're they're starting to fight. And there's some, there's some good things you can do. I think pre rut is the best time to rattle, to use your. Rattling horns or whatever you have. You might have a rattling tool. I have a rattling tool that's a little more compact that I can put in my pack, and it sounds just as good, and it does just as good.

Speaker 1 5:10
Now let's, let's back up on that. When do you use it? How often do you use it? I've always, I've had moments where I've scared deer doing it? Oh, yeah. And I'm like, I put them away, and then I'm afraid to use them again. So what? When's when's a good time to use it? You know, you're going out in the morning. It's early. Do you do it before daylight? You do it at daylight. You do it, you know, an hour into daylight, like, when do you use this thing? I never, I never knew.

Speaker 2 5:39
I usually don't use them until I see a buck. Okay, maybe if I'm gonna stand where I can see a pretty a buck somewhere, yeah, and I'll see this big buck, you know, 200 yards away, or whatever, I'll be a big buck. Well, I don't like to call in the little ones.

Unknown Speaker 5:55
There might be another big one around.

Speaker 2 5:58
Yeah, he might follow, yeah, but yeah, if I see I don't, I don't like to rattle because you don't know what's nearby, you know, you know, I don't like to rattle until I see one. But every now and then they call it dry rattling, you know, you just do it. You don't see anything, all right? And you just put out a dry call. Same thing with the grunts, you know? And I'll usually grunt a little bit when I'm rattling and and I've seen him just turn around and come right in. Okay. Now, if you check out, what episode was it, it was, it was curly. You can look up, you know, the episode with curly. That was the buck I got that year. But all during the arch, I saw him early in the archery season, and I tried to grunt him over right? He picked up his head when he heard the grunt, and he took off running. Now the problem with that is I just kept forgetting that. It was the craziest thing. I see him a month later, and oh, there he goes. And he's walking by me at, you know, 75 yards is too far away, so I get out my grunt call and try to grunt him back. And he takes, I'm going, Oh yeah, he doesn't like the grunt. There's some deer that like the grunt and some deer that don't. And I did it like, three times, like a dumb idiot. I wasn't, I wasn't even following my own stuff, you know, excited, you know, I go, come on back. I'm just saying I could have probably had a better effect if I yelled, come on back. But, but that's on that episode you'll see. And I learned. And of course, the spiritual lesson was about, you know, remembering these things, you know, that are important in your life, but, but, yeah, rattling and grunting is good because they're fighting right now, and they're all looking for a fight because they want to, they want to set the dominant chain. You know, I'm the dominant one here, my area, my area, and the hair on that's here, yeah. And then the girls are watching this, you know, we mentioned this, I think, last time, or a couple podcasts ago, that that these does according to the biologists. And I don't know how they figure this out, but the does that, yeah, they just add, they know the language, but they the does are the ones that make the decision of who breeds them. Like interesting it is. It's crazy, but, and so they're watching all this stuff, you know, and they're seeing who's got the best genes, and that's what they want their kids to have. You know?

Speaker 1 8:20
It's funny because you and I have sat in the woods so many times and watch these does. It doesn't look like they're paying attention to anything. They're either jittery or freaked out or they're running around. It doesn't look like they're paying attention to

Speaker 2 8:31
anything, you know. You know, it is so funny because when I was dating, right? And then, and then I dated my, you know, I met my wife. She was like a friend, a friend of mines, cousin and and I had to pick her up at the airport, and I just wanted to play this like joke. I said, don't I told my buddy Harry. I said, Harry, don't tell her that it's me. And I went over there because she had never seen a picture of me, I thought, but then her little sister. I actually got some picture. I found out later, but, but I said, I'm gonna, I'm gonna kind of flirt with her, and, you know, just kind of freak her out. She'll think you're just some guy. Yeah, I'm just some guy. And so, so she comes off the plane, and I see her there, and I'm trying to give her the eye, you know, she will not look at me. I mean, she played it so cool. She would not look. She knows I'm I'm doing everything to get her attention, you know. And then it's now we're at the where you get your luggage, you know, at the little thing that brings your luggage around. And so I get on the opposite side of her, and I'm trying to, she will not look at me. She was so cool about this is in the woods, and, no, it's the donut. And then I said, I got to do something, you know, to make this work. So she's starting to grab her luggage. So I run over there, go, that's my luggage. This lady's trying to steal my luggage, and I make a big scene, and she's freaking out, you know. But then that night, I mean, I'm sitting with my buddy, Harry. She's in the next room playing with this kid. She doesn't look at me, or nothing the whole time. And I'm thinking, how am I gonna, you know, ask her out, you know, the next day. I'm thinking, we can, you know, I gotta show her the town. You know, she's new in the area, so you play this all wrong. Oh, man. And then then I'm, I am coming out with some good jokes, man. And I'm, and she's right there. She can hear, and she ain't laughing, she ain't looking, she ain't doing nothing. And then finally, it was, if you could have heard me when I'm walking out the door, I'm going, Yeah, Harry, I think I'm going to go out to the beach, you know, because we were right on the beach at this Bible College. And I went, Hey, Dottie, I just happened to think about it. I've been thinking about it all night. Would you do you want to go? You know, I could, you know, take you to the beach down here, you know. And she goes, Okay, it was like, you know, if you're lucky, you know. And I ended up marrying her. So those does they know what they're doing. So anyway, so anyway, I went back in time there for 47 years we've been married. Alright, here we go, yeah, so during the rut, the pre rut, excuse me, pre rut, they are fighting. So you want to do the, you know, the the rattling, rattling and grunting, grunting and, and I would definitely, you know, put out some dough and estrus, you know, get that going. But some dominant Buck could work too, and, and again, those things could scare them away. You got to kind of watch the reaction of your deer, okay, you know, and see what works, what doesn't work, you know, you will, you will, you'll definitely see some bucks. You know, out during the day, check the cameras like crazy. You know, make sure you're checking your cameras, because they're going to be roaming around, and you want to know where they are. And I would put out a dripper, you know, put out the mock scrapes, all

Unknown Speaker 11:46
that you ever do a drag drag when you I used to

Speaker 2 11:49
do that a lot, you know. And I had one come in.

Speaker 1 11:52
I think I still do it, going up to my tree stand. I'm getting lazy in my old age, but you're just spraying your boots and going, I'm going, I

Speaker 2 12:01
spray, I get that spray, and I spray it, you know, in the bushes, you know. And sometimes I think it does work. But anyway, yeah, use the do. I would definitely do it. And the mock scrapes. I would make some of those, because they're making them all. And you want to look for for scrape lines, you know, you see a whole trail of them, because they will go back to those because they're trying to let the does know. This is my territory, you know. And we talked a little bit about that, you know, last time. But yeah, pre rut is a great time, you know, to get one of those big guys. And you.

Speaker 1 12:46
Well, Mike was recently talking to Jim Lipitor, and he was telling you some interesting facts about how hunters are spiritually minded, even even a person that just goes out to hunt, there's something as special about being out in the outdoors and God's creation.

Speaker 2 13:02
Yeah, that's right, yeah. I just talked with Jim. And, you know, Jim used to be the CEO of Outdoor Channel and sportsman channel and and he's also in the process of putting together a full length feature film called the harvest. You can see some proof of concept clips on YouTube and different places, but, but yeah, I'm gonna get him on the show too. He said he would come on the show, so we'll get him on. And he knows all these rock and roll stars of the outdoor industry, you know, and he's and he's gonna help us get some, get some guys that you know, hopefully that can be a guest too in the near future, but, but, yeah, he was talking about how they did a survey of 6000 hunters and and they found out that, like 86% of them, something like that, 81% 86% think it was. 86% were their faith was very important to them, you know, and even in their, you know, in their endeavors in the outdoors, and that 61% were strongly, like, strongly affected by their faith and and how they deal with the outdoors and their life, that's

Speaker 1 14:14
pretty cool. And that's just another reason why we feel like on this show anyway, we want to bring a spiritual application into it, because that's who we are. That's we believe we're Jesus followers, and so we feel like we want to bring in sort of a spiritual application. And today's no exception. We're going to talk about how to handle your aggression and temper. As we were looking at at the bucks. They get pretty riled up during pre rut, and they start fighting and carrying on and and as guys and as ladies, we can get pretty riled up over things, and sometimes our aggression and our temper and our anger takes the best of us. And you know, as well as I do, when you take that route, things don't always end up. Yeah, very good.

Speaker 2 15:01
No, they don't. They don't, yeah, and there's a lot in Scripture about, you know, how to handle your temper. And I remember, again, going back into my marriage, back in the day after Dottie and I were just married, you know, that's a, you know, marriage is definitely the sanctifying spot, you know. I mean, that's why God created marriage, so that we would sanctify us. You know, there's so much we learn. But you know, you're learning how to argue. You know, you know. And and I remember I read that verse, and where is it proverbs 15 one, and it says that soft words turns away wrath, right? So we were having this argument in bed, you know. And, and I'm really talking soft and I'm going, but Babe, you know, you're, you're, you're wrong about this, you know? And, and this is not the way to go, and I'm really talking soft, and she's getting all upset, you know, and everything, I'm going, babe, I'm talking soft. And then I went back to the verse, and I realized it wasn't talking, it was soft words, yeah, it turns away, red sounding. It was soft word. And like, I'm sorry it was my fault, you know. And let me hear what you have to say those kind of software. So, yeah, the sanctified, but yeah, that's a huge one to me. That made such a difference, you know. And, and then the other one was, and this was hard for me, too. I mean, Ben from the south, see, Dottie was from the North. I'm from Tampa, Florida. She was from Warrington, Pennsylvania, you know, hardcore up and, oh, we're talking two different cultures, you know. And, you know, they say opposites attract. And I guess maybe they had, you're, you're a laid back Floridian, and I'm a laid back for whatever. Okay, but you know how we love to tell story, and we, you know, you know, I remember one time I was pulled over by a guy, a southern boy cop, and he was in South Carolina, you know, and it was like four of us guys, right? And it was in the middle of the night. We were just traveling somewhere in the middle of night, and he pulled it over, and he had the strongest so that it was South Carolina or something, and he, and he comes to the window, and I'm driving, and he goes, You boys, pertinent, went flying over them railroad track back there, you know. And I said, You got to be kidding that that is a great accident, you know, you're right out of, you know, right out of a, right out of a movie casting, yeah, and, and, and then he takes us over to his car, and he starts showing us his busted window, and this convict that he was taking busted out. And they all that my and, you know how? And then he says, Now, boys, and I wasn't speeding. I wasn't doing anything wrong. I didn't know why he pulled me over. And then he just says, You boys, you know you'd be safe now, and I'm not going to give you a tick or not. You just go on and just drive safe, you know. And I'm driving down the road, and we're thinking, what just happened? And then it hit me, here is a good old boy with an incredible story, and nobody to tell. He had to pull us over and tell us the story. And that's the way we are in the south, you know. But the but the Bible says, And this is, this is where we gotta, you know, in John 119 he says to be slow to speak, quick to hear, and then slow to wrath. And, you know, and that's talking more with the when you're getting into maybe a dispute or Orr a different opinion that somebody may have and be slow to speak, and that's tough for us southern boys, but we're working on it, you know, and so that that's a good one to really practice. And and think when somebody, my daughter, just told me this the other night, and it was really cool. She said, when, when somebody has a different opinion, it's not that we should avoid that like so many people. Oh, well, if we think about that, let's just Yeah, because we don't want to. We have so much that we agree on. Let's go. Let's go that way. But yet, it can be a great way to just discover new things that you've never thought about if you prepare your mind in that way that you're quick to hear and slow to speak. Well, let me hear where she's coming from, you know? And that thought that was great, great advice. Oh, I think the other verse the Bible talks about consider others as better than yourself. Now, that is a radical that's hard, that that that is Jesus. You know, there is no way that we can even produce that.

Speaker 1 19:49
And we're not saying that these things are easy to do, oh no, but they are principles that the Bible talks about, that if we can just begin to practice them in real life, in real. Situations, they do work,

Speaker 2 20:02
yeah, and you know, that's why he had to give us His Holy Spirit. There is no way, but that's what the prophets talked about in the Old Testament, that the New Covenant would be a covenant where he would be in us. He would walk with us. It's just, you know, that we would have the heart of Jesus, we would have the mind of Christ, and we do through the Holy Spirit. He dwells in us. No longer will I dwell in houses built with hands, but I will be in my people. Remember that great prophecy. I love that, and, and, and we're the temple of God, but that, that is heavy, but it will give us power to be able to do these things. When I think about, you know, considering others better than yourself, only Jesus can do that. I mean, we are not geared that way. And but I know I love that verse in Galatians 516 it's actually a promise of perfection, which, of course, when you read the book of First John, you know the you know that he that says he's without sin is a liar and doesn't know the truth. So you don't want to, you know we definitely, you know what we're working on it. But he says is a promise there in Galatians 516, he says, if we walk in the Spirit, we will not carry out the desires of our flesh. And so that's the pilgrimage of the Christian life, really, is learning. What does that mean? How do I walk in the Spirit? And you do it by faith. You walk by faith, and you trust, you surrender to you know the Lord, and He will, He will show you. It'll be Paul says, I live yet not I, but Christ lives in me. And that's how we can actually accomplish some of these things. And and, of course, you know, the Bible talks about, in Revelation, we'll just throw all of our crowns. These are all these accomplishments, right, that we've done. And in the body of Christ and in the kingdom of God, will throw them at his feet, because he really did them all through us, yeah. And that's the only way they could have been accomplished, you know. And we give them all the praise, all the glory, then there's an interesting one in Ephesians, 426, which talks about, in your anger, do not sin. Now, is there an anger that's not sinful? That's interesting, when I try to tell Dottie, this is anger that is not

Unknown Speaker 22:20
I never told she's not buying it anyway.

Speaker 2 22:24
No, it's, uh, but when Jesus, man, I'll tell you what I don't know. If you saw the chosen, the one where he's at in the temple, and he's throwing over the tables, and he has a whip. He's using a whip, um, he was anger, angry, and he didn't sin. This was all the righteous anger of God, which I don't know if we will ever experience, but I think we can, every now and then, if it's, you know, that we get upset about, you know, what's happening in in some of our culture, with with children and, you know, some of this weird stuff. I don't even want to get into it, but that can get you angry, and may want to make you do something about it, you know, but, but, but then the verse goes on, and I think it's more of in a relationship, too. In the context there, he says, Be angry and sin not don't let the sun go down on your wrath. In other words, talk, you know, talk about it. You might need a timeout, you know. I think that phrase, don't let the sun go down you're at just means you need, you need to get it resolved. Don't go to bed angry. Don't go to bed angry. Is it going but sometimes you just need to get away. And maybe you can, you go to bed, but, but the idea is, get it, get it resolved the next day, or really soon. You don't want to let it fester and harbor and you, but you get, you resolve it. Don't let it just hang there and and to resolve it, that's where you get into that slow to speak, quick to hear, and the soft spoken word. Now the soft sound, the soft words, it's the words that are soft, like, I love you, I'm sorry. Let's work this out all that kind of stuff. Yeah, but yeah, you got to handle that temper. We got to get rid of our anger. The Bible says, you know, there's so, so many verses that talk about anger and how to deal with it, and and Jesus is, is the answer. You know,
