Speaker 1
Hello. Hello and welcome. Are we.
00:00:12:13 - 00:00:16:24
Speaker 2
Ready? I get my microphone right, like, right off the bat. It's always messed up.
00:00:16:27 - 00:00:23:28
Speaker 1
Why can't we be ready when it's time to be ready? I don't know why we control it. And I'm still was. I still wasn't ready. Am I?
00:00:23:29 - 00:00:24:27
Speaker 2
Let's try it again.
00:00:25:02 - 00:00:31:09
Speaker 1
Hello. Hello and welcome to As We Art episode 23.
00:00:31:11 - 00:00:41:10
Speaker 2
We're glad you're here. We're on this podcast to talk about what we're creating and what's inspiring us, and we want to hear from you. What are you creating and what's inspiring you?
00:00:41:13 - 00:00:42:07
Speaker 1
Yeah.
00:00:42:10 - 00:00:43:07
Speaker 2
And Candice.
00:00:43:11 - 00:00:45:02
Speaker 1
Oh, say it again. Talk to me.
00:00:45:09 - 00:00:47:03
Speaker 2
I'm Candice.
00:00:47:06 - 00:01:02:02
Speaker 1
I'm Monica, and you would think this is the first time we've done this. Based on that loveliness. But listen, we do this. We're real. This is authentic, and we don't edit out the crap. So you get all the mistakes and the taco offers no do overs.
00:01:02:02 - 00:01:04:26
Speaker 2
And we're good at crap, you know?
00:01:04:28 - 00:01:17:17
Speaker 1
So we're talking art. We're talking inspiration. We want to know what you're working on, and we're really glad you're here, because it means you're interested to know what we're working on. We hope that's why you're here.
00:01:17:19 - 00:01:19:28
Speaker 2
Maybe. Maybe not. We don't know.
00:01:20:00 - 00:01:28:02
Speaker 1
We don't know your intentions. Episode 23. Oh, my gosh, that's awesome. We're almost at the halfway mark of the year.
00:01:28:05 - 00:01:30:04
Speaker 2
Wow. That's crazy.
00:01:30:06 - 00:01:34:17
Speaker 1
Because we committed to a year. That's right. Yeah. 2026 is going.
00:01:34:17 - 00:01:36:04
Speaker 2
To be six months in 26.
00:01:36:04 - 00:01:40:00
Speaker 1
We should do like, you know, look back.
00:01:40:02 - 00:01:42:26
Speaker 2
We should do A6A6 month look back.
00:01:43:02 - 00:01:48:21
Speaker 1
Yeah. What we've done or what words I've mispronounced.
00:01:48:23 - 00:01:53:07
Speaker 2
There's too many times I've stuttered over a sentence. That's a good one.
00:01:53:09 - 00:01:59:19
Speaker 1
Too many to list. But that would be fun to kind of do a little, I don't know, look back for our.
00:01:59:22 - 00:02:05:19
Speaker 2
Little something together. It might be us going. Well, it's been six months. Okay, bye. Yeah.
00:02:05:22 - 00:02:08:02
Speaker 1
We might also have to do another little giveaway.
00:02:08:09 - 00:02:10:05
Speaker 2
Oh, yeah. We should do a giveaway for.
00:02:10:05 - 00:02:10:22
Speaker 1
Six of this.
00:02:10:23 - 00:02:16:22
Speaker 2
Let's commit. We're going to do a giveaway for our six month episode for episode 26.
00:02:16:25 - 00:02:18:00
Speaker 1
Or around there?
00:02:18:01 - 00:02:21:15
Speaker 2
Episode 26.
00:02:21:18 - 00:02:23:28
Speaker 1
For. Tune in before that to get details.
00:02:23:28 - 00:02:24:19
Speaker 2
Yes. I don't.
00:02:24:19 - 00:02:25:22
Speaker 1
Know as we're making.
00:02:25:22 - 00:02:29:16
Speaker 2
This up, as we go along, as we make this up. I know he said sure.
00:02:29:18 - 00:02:39:13
Speaker 1
Oh, listen, we are glad you're here. And if you're listening on the podcast, that's awesome. If you're watching on YouTube, hi. And you're getting some extra and you get.
00:02:39:13 - 00:02:41:16
Speaker 2
To see the faces.
00:02:41:19 - 00:02:43:19
Speaker 1
You get to see Candace's new hair color.
00:02:43:19 - 00:02:55:16
Speaker 2
Oh, yes. Yes, I dyed my hair. It. I didn't bleach it beforehand. It's supposed to be like a really dark green, which it is, but it's a little more bluish. Yes. Murphy blue. Oh, Murphy brown?
00:02:55:22 - 00:03:00:12
Speaker 1
I don't think so. I think it's like a dark teal. There's a little. Well, let's see a.
00:03:00:12 - 00:03:09:21
Speaker 2
Little bit more in my grays, but, Yeah, I didn't want to bleach first. I just wanted to see what happens when you put it on dark hair. And I like it.
00:03:09:24 - 00:03:11:11
Speaker 1
I like when you change up the color.
00:03:11:13 - 00:03:11:29
Speaker 2
It's fun.
00:03:12:04 - 00:03:15:23
Speaker 1
Sometimes it's purple, sometimes it's green. Now it's bluish teal. Yeah.
00:03:15:24 - 00:03:24:13
Speaker 2
I've had every hair color on the planet you can imagine, including crazy, crazy like orange, yellow, bleach blond. So. Oh.
00:03:24:16 - 00:03:44:25
Speaker 1
I didn't see that. I wasn't around for that one, but. Well, what we're saying is, if you're just listening, don't worry, you're not missing out on visuals. If you follow us on Instagram as We Art podcast because, we, we put some photos after every show we go, I go back and listen. I'm like, what the hell did we talk about?
00:03:44:25 - 00:03:49:15
Speaker 1
Because we don't have a script. I have to go back and be like, who did we reference? Or what did we say?
00:03:49:15 - 00:03:52:10
Speaker 2
We're just as surprised by our episodes as you are.
00:03:52:13 - 00:04:04:16
Speaker 1
Totally. And so I go back and we find some things to take pictures up. So they'll be pictures of our art, pictures of Candace's hair, pictures of, our, our clothing if.
00:04:04:22 - 00:04:05:15
Speaker 2
We talk about.
00:04:05:16 - 00:04:26:21
Speaker 1
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And if you share with us, we love it. You can put it in the comments on YouTube. You can put it in the comments on Instagram, or you can message us people slide into the DMs or, send us an email. Yeah. Or if you're, you know that that close to that. So you can just send us a text.
00:04:26:21 - 00:04:31:15
Speaker 1
Some of our friends do love the episode and this is what I'm working on. We love to hear it.
00:04:31:15 - 00:04:35:27
Speaker 2
Awesome. Yeah, we love hearing from you no matter how well we know you.
00:04:36:04 - 00:04:59:01
Speaker 1
Yes. So again, we're coming at you, live like real. No edits. And we are mid, mid June in the United States of America in the northeast where it's nice and muggy. Today's overcast, we have some clouds but it is summer. And we are, you know enjoying some summer.
00:04:59:01 - 00:05:00:27
Speaker 2
Things like.
00:05:01:00 - 00:05:04:06
Speaker 1
I don't know. We've been swimming a couple times and we've gone to a couple.
00:05:04:06 - 00:05:06:01
Speaker 2
Local bases looking at the ocean.
00:05:06:04 - 00:05:29:00
Speaker 1
So we live near the ocean. We're very lucky. So that's always, that's always nice. And for those of you who follow, you know, we are both dealing with a little bit of, I don't want to say setbacks are not there health things with our health that's causing us to be creative in how we go about our day. Because I'm not I'm not keeping it negative.
00:05:29:00 - 00:05:49:23
Speaker 1
Like Candace has some headaches and visual stuff happening with, as a as a response system. Too much screen time, computer time. And, and I'm dealing with some back pain that's been totally flaring up. So it's been interesting. We don't want to be the old ladies who complain about our aches and pains.
00:05:49:26 - 00:05:52:18
Speaker 2
But we've hit that age. But also, no.
00:05:52:18 - 00:06:15:14
Speaker 1
It's really good to, like, mention that there's still ways we're finding to challenge ourselves to be creative and find things that don't involve screens. Or I have to adapt to the pace at which I'm moving. And so it's kind of nice. So if you're dealing with anything that's kind of different in your life or something you used to do, maybe without any repercussions, and maybe that's different now.
00:06:15:14 - 00:06:21:13
Speaker 1
Like anything in your life, you have to make adjustments for, we'd like to know. Yeah, it's interesting to us.
00:06:21:17 - 00:06:28:20
Speaker 2
Yeah. If you have to be creative about what you do, to be creative, to adjust for some things. We're. We're in the same boat.
00:06:28:25 - 00:06:39:13
Speaker 1
Yeah, yeah, that's it's good for doing it. And so we are here to talk about art. Who's going to go first? I think you should go first. I should go first.
00:06:39:14 - 00:06:43:04
Speaker 2
You should go first. Monica's going to go first.
00:06:43:07 - 00:06:53:09
Speaker 1
Okay I, I didn't work on my writing this week and I didn't work on. Yeah. Starting with what I didn't do and I didn't work on is not.
00:06:53:09 - 00:06:56:15
Speaker 2
As we aren't okay.
00:06:56:17 - 00:07:07:15
Speaker 1
I'm just feeling bad because I just. I needed a week off from I'm also doing less computer screen time and it meant a little less writing. Oh, wait a minute. I did a ton of writing in my notebook.
00:07:07:16 - 00:07:08:24
Speaker 2
Yes, you journaled.
00:07:09:01 - 00:07:38:19
Speaker 1
I took my pen and notebook and I did a ton of writing. In fact, I outline chapters of of future essays, but with pen and ink. Isn't that funny? I didn't think of that as writing because I wasn't like at the computer. Yeah, well, anyway, I did do hours worth of writing, but, for my art project this week that I really wanted to do, I had this vision of a potted plant, and I have a dark corner where I.
00:07:38:21 - 00:07:39:19
Speaker 1
I'm getting somewhere.
00:07:39:23 - 00:07:42:07
Speaker 2
Monica writes in a coffin.
00:07:42:09 - 00:07:45:07
Speaker 1
No, that would be you. In a coffin.
00:07:45:08 - 00:07:47:10
Speaker 2
I have a dark corner. I wear a.
00:07:47:10 - 00:08:16:18
Speaker 1
Broom. Let me explain. Really quick. We move some furniture around and my desk, where I work with my clients and teaching non-native English students. Is in a darker corner of the room. It's not exactly close to a window, so I can't have a typical potted plant. I really like to have plants. Those of, you know, if you're watching, we have a plant behind us, and it used to have really long tendrils, but I gave it a little trim and transplanted them in other pots around the house.
00:08:16:23 - 00:08:35:27
Speaker 1
But anyway, my corner where my desk is for work is not conducive to a potted plant. And so I thought, I'll make a potted plant out of stained glass. But instead of doing a 3D one that I normally do, I decided to do a flat panel of a potted plant. I had this vision of it and then it sort of evolved.
00:08:35:27 - 00:08:45:10
Speaker 1
I'm still working on it. It's in progress. It's a stained glass plant and I really wanted a bright, golden background.
00:08:45:12 - 00:08:47:16
Speaker 2
Don't hit your mic cord. There you go.
00:08:47:19 - 00:08:52:00
Speaker 1
I know, don't lift it too high because it's not soldered yet.
00:08:52:00 - 00:08:55:02
Speaker 2
Awesome. So the colors are great.
00:08:55:02 - 00:09:19:29
Speaker 1
Oh thank you. I hope you can see this. I did a potted plant, the green leaves, which you won't be able to see, in their full glory because it's against a dark background. They're gorgeous. They're like this green, like, swirls and. Oh, God, I just love. I just really, really fucked this up. I'm sorry. I'll fix it in a minute.
00:09:20:01 - 00:09:41:20
Speaker 1
I did two different tones of gold in the background and a gray pot to. I'm hoping the pot is kind of not as I don't want to be like the center stage. I want this, this bright, golden background and this beautiful five leaves of green, which I'll fix in a minute. But anyway, I'm really excited to solder it.
00:09:41:22 - 00:10:02:24
Speaker 1
I drew the pattern, I selected the glass, I cut all the glass and I ground every piece and I foiled. I was busy with this and it took me hours and hours, but I just I focused on it. I will say the two toned golden background wasn't was not intentional.
00:10:02:26 - 00:10:04:18
Speaker 2
But it looks awesome.
00:10:04:20 - 00:10:24:03
Speaker 1
I, I had two sheets, you guys and I started cutting my background. I did one sheet and then a half another sheet and I realized, oh crap, they're slightly different. I thought they were the same glass and they weren't. And this happens sometimes you get glass or you buy glass. Sometimes you think naked eye, they look the same, but.
00:10:24:05 - 00:10:43:26
Speaker 1
So I was like, oh, well, I'll embrace that. I have two tones. And then I ended up really intentionally using the two different background colors. And again, for those of you just listening, jump on Instagram to see what I'm talking about. Oh yeah. And so I'll put a picture of this. It certainly isn't done yet, and I won't have time to solder it and frame it for a little while, because I have some other projects that are more pressing.
00:10:44:03 - 00:11:10:01
Speaker 1
But this was something that was just in my brain, and my idea was going back to my why I started this. I was going to hang this behind my desk where I teach, but I'm like, no, I can't keep keeping everything I make. So this will be available to sell when I'm done. And I love it. It's going to be hard to say goodbye to it, but I think it's going to be pretty gorgeous and someone will one in their house, I'm sure.
00:11:10:03 - 00:11:18:29
Speaker 2
Yeah, I'm working on migrating all of our sales over to our website instead of, outsourcing our sales to Etsy. Yeah.
00:11:18:29 - 00:11:20:17
Speaker 1
So on Etsy, it'll.
00:11:20:18 - 00:11:43:04
Speaker 2
Be a little while, but things will be for sale on there eventually. I, like Monica said, have to take a really I have to really take stock of how much screen time I have. I can't have a lot. Really. Ideally I should have none, but, so it'll take longer than it normally would, but we'll get there.
00:11:43:07 - 00:11:47:21
Speaker 1
Yeah, yeah. Candace is rocking some, special glasses.
00:11:47:25 - 00:11:48:21
Speaker 2
Oh, yeah?
00:11:48:23 - 00:12:08:01
Speaker 1
Where the tint when she's on the computer, but it's very limited amounts of time, so unfortunately, I'm not the one who's really well versed in being able to set up a website like that. And Candace is, but we're also talking about outsourcing it to let someone else do the work, get support. Someone else. To earn an income to build our website.
00:12:08:01 - 00:12:26:27
Speaker 1
So we're, we're kind of in between on that right now. Yep. But it felt good to work on this piece of art. I'm happy with it. And I'm trying not to get on myself and, like, well, it wasn't what I should have been doing. And do you guys struggle with that? You have a list of things, tasks, jobs, things you you have to get done.
00:12:26:27 - 00:12:47:26
Speaker 1
Because whether it's your job or it's under deadline or you keep meaning to, but then you get sad. I get sidetracked all the time, and you start a project and it kind of takes you down a new path. And I was really I'm really happy with this path. It made me happy to work on it. So I try to balance that feeling of, oh, well, I maybe should have done something else.
00:12:47:29 - 00:12:51:28
Speaker 1
But I'm trying not to say that I'm really glad I made this and it's coming along.
00:12:51:29 - 00:13:03:07
Speaker 2
It's beautiful too. Thank you. It's a beautiful piece of art that's in the world that wouldn't be there had you followed what you should have been doing. Yeah. So who cares? You know.
00:13:03:09 - 00:13:14:02
Speaker 1
Thank you so much. So hopefully, within the next few weeks, I'll find time to solder it and frame it and put it together. And then eventually our goal is like by the end of the summer, we'll finally have like, stuff posted for sale.
00:13:14:05 - 00:13:14:23
Speaker 2
Yeah.
00:13:14:26 - 00:13:23:11
Speaker 1
So stay tuned on that. But yeah, felt really good to do some art. What did you work? I know you've been very busy in your art studio.
00:13:23:15 - 00:13:44:27
Speaker 2
I have been very busy. My art studio, I worked on a thing for my sister's birthday last week, and now that that's complete, I went back to work on the anatomical heart that I had shown a couple weeks ago. So I got the carving done, and I did a test print and needed to do some more carving. So I did that.
00:13:44:27 - 00:14:12:09
Speaker 2
And now I have a run of, four prints that are complete. So I'll show you the linocut, the actual lino that I carved, and then, I'll show you the print. So that's the linoleum all carved. I tried to add some texture in places. Which is new to me. Add a little bit of, like, shading and stippling and.
00:14:12:15 - 00:14:31:01
Speaker 1
Oh, is that what that's. Those little nicks are on purpose. Yeah. My God, I again, if you're missing this because you're listening, don't don't worry. Just get on YouTube and watch or get on Instagram. But these little tiny carvings and dots, Candace added, that's so awesome.
00:14:31:08 - 00:14:57:01
Speaker 2
Thank you. And then, I printed that. So if I can get my thumb under this piece of paper, this is what the print looks like. Wow. So the stippling in these parts is intentional. The lines here intentional. And. Yeah, I really like the way it looks. I have a few places I gouged out a bit too much, but that's okay.
00:14:57:04 - 00:14:58:25
Speaker 1
That bold red.
00:14:58:28 - 00:15:06:12
Speaker 2
Yeah. Yeah, I definitely want to try it in other colors, but I thought red might as well go with the classic for heart for the first print.
00:15:06:12 - 00:15:09:00
Speaker 1
So it's stunning. How many of these did you do?
00:15:09:01 - 00:15:10:19
Speaker 2
I did a run of four.
00:15:10:20 - 00:15:12:18
Speaker 1
Okay, this is still drying.
00:15:12:23 - 00:15:14:04
Speaker 2
It is yet it's still wet.
00:15:14:05 - 00:15:20:28
Speaker 1
Beautiful. So bold and crisp that paint it. Thank you. I was going to say it looks wet, but it's because it is. But it is.
00:15:20:28 - 00:15:21:08
Speaker 2
Wet.
00:15:21:15 - 00:15:23:25
Speaker 1
But it kind of has, like almost a little sheen to it.
00:15:24:00 - 00:15:48:25
Speaker 2
Yeah, yeah. The only like ink color I have that's truly matte and doesn't have any sort of sheen in it is black. So, the rest of them have a little bit of a sheen to them. If they're the the brand is called Calico Safe Wash. So it's oil based ink that is water soluble, usually oil inks you have to remove with paint thinner.
00:15:48:27 - 00:15:57:25
Speaker 2
I don't like working with a lot of chemicals. So I use, you know, soap and water washable inks.
00:15:57:28 - 00:16:19:11
Speaker 1
It's gorgeous. I'm excited to see it framed and ready to ready to sell, but I'm also excited to see you do it in other colors. I love what you chose to carve away and it's so sorry. I'm looking at this. It's so interesting to me. We all know this, but it's a reminder how much nature our bodies look like.
00:16:19:11 - 00:16:24:26
Speaker 1
Nature like these. What are those branches in the heart? Veins are. What are.
00:16:24:26 - 00:16:26:27
Speaker 2
There? Yeah, they're veins. Veins?
00:16:26:29 - 00:16:29:21
Speaker 1
They look like tree branches in nature and,
00:16:29:24 - 00:16:31:18
Speaker 2
Or like rivers and estuaries.
00:16:31:18 - 00:16:33:05
Speaker 1
Oh, yes.
00:16:33:09 - 00:16:33:21
Speaker 2
Yeah.
00:16:33:21 - 00:16:45:18
Speaker 1
This is. You're right. This could be a picture from a drone above. A riverbed. It's gorgeous. So, Nice work. Candice. That's so impressive.
00:16:45:19 - 00:16:58:26
Speaker 2
Thank you. It was a lot of fun. I really feel like I'm kind of starting to hit my stride with, like, no cutting and really enjoying the process, and, So, yeah, I'm. I'm having a lot of fun.
00:16:59:02 - 00:17:04:27
Speaker 1
That's that's so great. And we're attending an art thing later.
00:17:04:28 - 00:17:05:27
Speaker 2
Art things.
00:17:05:27 - 00:17:29:22
Speaker 1
An exhibit opening. So at a local gallery. I have if you follow, I have made an octopus out of stained glass with penny suckers. That will be on display at a gallery. And the opening is tonight. We'll be going this this podcast drops every Tuesday. So by the time this airs on Tuesday, we will have already been there.
00:17:29:22 - 00:18:04:04
Speaker 1
But I just want to say how excited we are to attend. It's it's totally exciting to have your art in an art show that's not lost on us every time we have a piece. And we've been very fortunate to have pieces in various art shows at different galleries in our area, it feels incredible. It really does. When the other part of, the show tonight is the reveal of the big giant, mysterious painting where 150, I think it's more I think it was like closer to 200 artists this time.
00:18:04:04 - 00:18:34:10
Speaker 1
I think we're given a blank white square with a tiny little clue to to replicate. Mine was mostly greens. If you followed, you saw it. And I used pennies also in that piece. Well, tonight all 150 squares will be installed. This big installation project that's like over two stories tall, one square at a time. It's called Piece by Piece, and the big reveal will finally get to know what painting this is.
00:18:34:10 - 00:18:40:21
Speaker 1
Usually it's something recognizable, like the Mona Lisa, or it's just some recognizable starry night.
00:18:40:22 - 00:18:41:20
Speaker 2
Like, yeah.
00:18:41:22 - 00:19:08:01
Speaker 1
I don't know what this one's going to be. I can't wait, but we'll be sure to update you by the time our next podcast is recorded. We'll have had band and we'll take pictures of it. So we're really excited. You know, as artists who work from home and stay in their studio and no longer sell things at local shops or no longer tend, as vendors, as vendors, we go as customers, but as vendors, we don't vendor at festivals anymore.
00:19:08:01 - 00:19:20:09
Speaker 1
It's just in our past. Yeah. It's nice to be able to go out and see other artists and see art in person and be part of that community. So we're really looking forward to like an in-person thing. It really are.
00:19:20:11 - 00:19:21:19
Speaker 2
Yeah, it's going to be awesome.
00:19:21:19 - 00:19:57:06
Speaker 1
Yeah. And on that note, wherever you are in the world, if you can go out and support a local gallery, right, or a local art show or local market, or when vendors are set up at a fair type of situation, go and support them. Go and see the art, buy some art, be present for that. In this day and age, as we harp on all the time here on as we art more and more, it's easier to stay home and computers and AI, or just making everything convenient and with very little effort.
00:19:57:08 - 00:20:05:11
Speaker 1
So to be able to go out in person and see the hard work that people have put into art. Did your leg just nudge me to stop talking?
00:20:05:11 - 00:20:07:18
Speaker 2
No. Sorry. It was unintentional.
00:20:07:18 - 00:20:12:23
Speaker 1
I'm like, oh shit, you haven't done that on this podcast. I think my chair's a little closer.
00:20:12:29 - 00:20:15:13
Speaker 2
Yeah, our chairs are closer. I didn't mean to bark.
00:20:15:13 - 00:20:19:13
Speaker 1
You can't even notice. I am I talking to? Sorry. That's really funny.
00:20:19:15 - 00:20:25:25
Speaker 2
Now definitely go support local vendors. I wasn't bonking Monica to make her hush. Sounds terrible.
00:20:25:26 - 00:20:32:01
Speaker 1
Usually do that, but like, there are times in public where she's just like.
00:20:32:04 - 00:20:36:01
Speaker 2
Oh no, that was not one of these times. But I'm like, oh, very funny.
00:20:36:01 - 00:20:54:04
Speaker 1
Yeah. So we'd like to know, what is your favorite local gallery? Your favorite local art show? Are there vendors or artists or just creative people you have found by being out in your community, in public, like share their name if you found them, if you found their gallery or their art, if they have a handle, you can put it in the comments.
00:20:54:07 - 00:21:03:12
Speaker 1
We'd love to look at their art if you find it, if you can share it, that would be awesome. That's awesome. We were very arty this week.
00:21:03:18 - 00:21:10:11
Speaker 2
Where do you want to talk inspiration or inspiration?
00:21:10:13 - 00:21:27:17
Speaker 1
I should have thought ahead of time. Let's see. I am inspired by the season. It is summer. We have a local ball team, and I like to go. We like. We like to go to some games and watch. They're free and we can go and watch amazing baseball. It's it's a lot.
00:21:27:17 - 00:21:43:20
Speaker 2
Of college baseball players that are like being scouted for the majors. So it's it's fun to watch. They're very good, very good at playing baseball. I don't know, it it sounds awkward to say, well, they're they're very good at being baseball.
00:21:43:20 - 00:22:03:02
Speaker 1
It's a competitive league. And they take collegiate players and they have to be the top, top, top collegiate players to make it into this league. And then, as Candace mentioned, a lot of the MLB scouts are at these games because it's the next step is to become a pro. Yep. So it's really fun to watch this baseball because it's wooden bats.
00:22:03:02 - 00:22:08:00
Speaker 1
It's competitive. It's all the rules of the NBA, NBA.
00:22:08:03 - 00:22:10:13
Speaker 2
MLB, MLB,
00:22:10:16 - 00:22:35:21
Speaker 1
Master's in business. Yes, it's all the rules of the majors, but it gives them a chance to step up and like almost daily, have a game. But the schedule is is really intense for the summer. So we feel really good about being able to support the league and go to the games. And I'm, I'm wearing a kettle this is one of the, one of the names of the teams Cavaliers.
00:22:35:23 - 00:23:02:02
Speaker 1
And so it's, that's been inspiring to kind of take that time to slow down and find activities and things to do, because I've had some back pain. And again, I'm not trying to harp on that. I'm just saying me being inspired to, you know, what my inspiration is being open to getting treatments and asking for help. I'm like, that's so hard.
00:23:02:09 - 00:23:29:17
Speaker 1
It's so right. This is hard for me because I was raised with like, you must be productive to have any value, to be able to slow down and ask for help and say, oh, you know what? I'm having some pain. I actually can't participate or I can't lift that this week. That's hard for me. And so, getting out of that mindset where it's it's not needy if you need help in any way, mental health, physical health, like seeking those treatments.
00:23:29:23 - 00:23:53:19
Speaker 1
And we're lucky enough to have health insurance money for copays. It's not cheap, right? If when you need help physically or mentally like that's hard. But I think I feel inspired by trying different treatments. I'm. I haven't started yet, but I have appointments for physical therapy and osteopath and I'm going to do acupuncture and I'm going to like, try different modalities to help.
00:23:53:19 - 00:24:03:11
Speaker 1
And so I think I'm inspired by slowing down, feeling vulnerable and asking for help because I like to be the one who's helping.
00:24:03:11 - 00:24:05:08
Speaker 2
Yeah. Me too. Me too.
00:24:05:09 - 00:24:11:19
Speaker 1
Don't like to be the one who needs it, but I'm. I'm embracing that. This is the summer of, I don't know.
00:24:11:21 - 00:24:12:25
Speaker 2
The old switcheroo.
00:24:12:27 - 00:24:16:07
Speaker 1
Yeah, the summer I turned vulnerable.
00:24:16:13 - 00:24:21:04
Speaker 2
Yes. Okay. There's a book title for you. Oh.
00:24:21:07 - 00:24:40:12
Speaker 1
So what are you inspired by this week? We'd love to know. Are you having a shift in your mindset in any way? Some of your core beliefs being like, questioned or rattled or just changed a little bit? Be gentle with yourself. If you're going through some kind of shift like that. It's part of growing up. It's part of adulting.
00:24:40:12 - 00:24:51:24
Speaker 1
We go through different phases and I'm 50 now, and it's about time I switch some of these patterns and say, well, you know what? I'm in pain. I'm feeling a little bit now I'm going to get some help.
00:24:51:27 - 00:25:03:03
Speaker 2
So, I mean, the secret of growing up that nobody ever tells you and being a grown up is you never really are grown up. You're always growing. So, you know, that's a good point.
00:25:03:05 - 00:25:06:10
Speaker 1
It's always a verb. Yeah. It's not an end goal.
00:25:06:10 - 00:25:12:05
Speaker 2
It's yes, yes, a process. I might look like a grown up, but I am still growing.
00:25:12:07 - 00:25:16:12
Speaker 1
I love it, I love it. What are you inspired by? This week, Candace?
00:25:16:14 - 00:25:45:00
Speaker 2
For me, it's been music. There is, band that's been around for a while, but I just discovered them. They are an electronic kind of dance pop band. They're called Muna. You and a they're from LA. Their music is just fun and fantastic. A lot of it's really queer centric, which is awesome. It's always nice to hear, like yourself reflected in other people's art.
00:25:45:03 - 00:26:00:07
Speaker 2
You know, queer experiences have a lot of similarities for people. And it's really nice to know that there are other people out there that have experienced the things that you have. And so, yeah, their music's been really fun to listen to.
00:26:00:10 - 00:26:22:24
Speaker 1
It's great. I hadn't heard of them till Candace told me about them, but it's like electronic kind of dance music. Fun pop dance music. Yeah. And it's energizing and it's nice to have on. It's a lot. I love when you have groups. I love when you're playing Muna. Yeah, I, I'm usually mood for something a little more mellow, but it depends on the time of day for me.
00:26:22:24 - 00:26:29:21
Speaker 1
But yeah, I love the dance music and for our morning dancing that we're still doing. Yes, that's great music.
00:26:29:24 - 00:26:31:00
Speaker 2
Yeah. They're awesome.
00:26:31:00 - 00:26:36:10
Speaker 1
That's awesome. And I noticed you have another band on your t shirt.
00:26:36:11 - 00:26:43:06
Speaker 2
I do, I do my t shirt is L7. They're a punk band. Also from LA, actually.
00:26:43:09 - 00:26:44:26
Speaker 1
So. And no men?
00:26:44:29 - 00:26:46:00
Speaker 2
No man. No.
00:26:46:07 - 00:26:55:05
Speaker 1
That's nice. But how did you find them? Because you told me about them when we met. But I that's like punk rock. Yeah, they're like.
00:26:55:08 - 00:27:17:04
Speaker 2
Almost thrash metal. Very kind of quick. They have some slower songs that are a little more melodic, but yeah, they're excellent. I love L7, the way I discovered them was completely accidental. What do you mean? My sister and I went to, CD store when I was in high school.
00:27:17:06 - 00:27:19:07
Speaker 1
It was to, like 16 or 17.
00:27:19:07 - 00:27:34:21
Speaker 2
Yeah, about 20 eons ago. And I was looking for new music, but I didn't have anything in mind, so I started shopping based on cover art. You know, don't judge a book by its cover, but I was.
00:27:34:26 - 00:27:35:26
Speaker 1
Like, so on the CD.
00:27:36:02 - 00:27:51:09
Speaker 2
Yes. I was just, like, browsing CDs based on cover art. And I ran across an album that, first of all, had a parental advisory, so that was usually a good sign that it was probably something I would have been into those stickers were.
00:27:51:09 - 00:27:51:21
Speaker 1
Like.
00:27:51:23 - 00:27:52:19
Speaker 2
Oh my God, they.
00:27:52:19 - 00:27:56:21
Speaker 1
Worked the opposite way. Parents hope they were like, buy me! Well.
00:27:56:21 - 00:28:05:23
Speaker 2
Also, like a lot of punk and metal albums got Parental Advisory even if there wasn't any bad language.
00:28:05:25 - 00:28:06:15
Speaker 1
Oh really?
00:28:06:15 - 00:28:15:20
Speaker 2
Yes, it was just because of the genre they were in. My so stupid. So I kind of knew to like, look for parental advisory stickers, you know.
00:28:15:27 - 00:28:17:11
Speaker 1
What was the cover art?
00:28:17:13 - 00:28:21:19
Speaker 2
So I ran into this album and it was called Bricks Are Heavy.
00:28:21:21 - 00:28:22:06
Speaker 1
Okay.
00:28:22:08 - 00:28:45:25
Speaker 2
So first of all, you know, nice, observation. That is true. Bricks are heavy. But it was this green and black and yellow that's on my shirt, and it said L7, and it was just a bunch of women around, like a bonfire, throwing stuff into the bonfire. And I was like, that looks good.
00:28:45:27 - 00:28:47:11
Speaker 1
Without knowing the genre, without.
00:28:47:11 - 00:29:08:10
Speaker 2
Knowing the genre, I did look at the back of the album and some of the songs. I was like, okay, this seems like it'd be up my alley. Like one of the songs was called Shit List. So I'm like, all right, that's probably something kind of punk metal esque. And I put this CD in on the way home and was instantly hooked.
00:29:08:12 - 00:29:16:20
Speaker 2
So L7 is amazing. Their albums are really good. They're actually on their final farewell tour this summer.
00:29:16:22 - 00:29:18:17
Speaker 1
They've been around for a while. They're still together.
00:29:18:17 - 00:29:21:21
Speaker 2
80s? Yeah, since the 80s. Yeah.
00:29:21:24 - 00:29:24:11
Speaker 1
Because you didn't find them til the early 2000.
00:29:24:11 - 00:29:26:00
Speaker 2
Okay. When I found them. Yeah.
00:29:26:01 - 00:29:26:20
Speaker 1
Wow.
00:29:26:27 - 00:29:57:28
Speaker 2
But their song shit list is in the movie Natural Born Killers in, like, a really pivotal moment. They put it on the jukebox. Yeah, they did it. Just an awesome band. The opening song of Bricks Are Heavy is called War Gasm, and it's about like, you know, at the time, the Gulf War was happening and but it's got Yoko Ono in it, like samples of Yoko Ono singing, just making, you know, wow, Yoko sounds so singing.
00:29:57:28 - 00:29:59:09
Speaker 2
Yes, it's a little.
00:29:59:09 - 00:30:00:14
Speaker 1
Bit air quote it, but.
00:30:00:16 - 00:30:05:21
Speaker 2
Yeah, that album's awesome. Check out Bricks Are Heavy by L7 if you haven't before.
00:30:05:23 - 00:30:06:25
Speaker 1
Okay. And check out what.
00:30:06:26 - 00:30:09:11
Speaker 2
Looks really good. What does it smell? The magic.
00:30:09:17 - 00:30:11:10
Speaker 1
Is that an album or song?
00:30:11:12 - 00:30:13:25
Speaker 2
An album. Okay. Might be an EP.
00:30:13:29 - 00:30:18:15
Speaker 1
Smell the magic. And also Muna, you mentioned and Muna.
00:30:18:18 - 00:30:23:16
Speaker 2
Yep. They have a brand new album this year. I can't remember what it's called. Sorry.
00:30:23:18 - 00:30:26:06
Speaker 1
But I will put it on. Yeah, I'm going to take pictures.
00:30:26:09 - 00:30:27:12
Speaker 2
Yep.
00:30:27:14 - 00:30:30:29
Speaker 1
So they have what new album? You're going to see something else.
00:30:31:02 - 00:30:32:13
Speaker 2
And I don't know.
00:30:32:13 - 00:30:53:13
Speaker 1
All right, I don't know anyway. Well they have some good music. I can attest to both of those. Candice's taste in music is awesome. It's eclectic and she has shown me a lot. But there are times I want something more chill, and she's also shown me a genre I really like this band called Beach House that you introduced me to, and it's a more awesome chill.
00:30:53:15 - 00:30:54:22
Speaker 1
What's that genre called?
00:30:54:27 - 00:30:56:28
Speaker 2
It's called Dream Pop.
00:30:57:01 - 00:31:10:28
Speaker 1
Yeah. Yeah, it's kind of dreamy. If you don't know a beach house, I recommend them. And so they're so good. Yeah. And I have been listening to them as I'm slowing down a little bit more this week. So those are really good bands will throw out there. Beach.
00:31:10:28 - 00:31:18:20
Speaker 2
House is from Baltimore, Maryland. Okay. And their lead singer, her grandpa was a very famous composer.
00:31:18:22 - 00:31:21:21
Speaker 1
Oh, no. Music. Musical family.
00:31:21:22 - 00:31:22:26
Speaker 2
Yeah.
00:31:22:28 - 00:31:40:06
Speaker 1
So what are you listening to out there in the world besides us? Our voices right now. What music are you listening to? When you're in different moods and different like times of day, share music with us. We love, love, love adding new bands to our studio playlists for sure. Whatever.
00:31:40:06 - 00:31:46:20
Speaker 2
It is, the beach House album you should start with. By the way, it's called bloom. It's black with white polka dots.
00:31:46:22 - 00:31:49:05
Speaker 1
That's the one I pretty much listen to on repeat.
00:31:49:05 - 00:31:53:09
Speaker 2
It's so good. If you get the vinyl. The, vinyl jackets glow in the dark.
00:31:53:12 - 00:32:04:17
Speaker 1
So it can't. It's just putting it out. The glow in the dark. Seriously. So she has some pajama tops, some sweatshirts, some hats. They glow in the dark.
00:32:04:19 - 00:32:12:10
Speaker 2
They really do. And sometimes I forget and I end up, like, in a dark place where you shouldn't have glow in the dark like a movie theater or something. And I'm like, oh.
00:32:12:10 - 00:32:13:02
Speaker 1
Shit, all.
00:32:13:02 - 00:32:14:05
Speaker 2
Right.
00:32:14:07 - 00:32:38:22
Speaker 1
That's great. So our art and inspiration this week, episode 23. We're doing it. We're here, we're making art. We're being inspired through some good and, you know, challenging things. But we're happy to be doing this and so happy you're here. So let us know what you're working on. What's inspiring you, what music you're listening to. And we will see you next week.
00:32:38:22 - 00:32:42:10
Speaker 2
Yes. Thanks for joining. Bye bye.
