Good morning.

And welcome to morning cereal

Okay, good morning and welcome to Monday

and welcome to February

officially. What a month ahead of us

We've got the Super Bowl, go Swifties. We

had Groundhog's Day. We've got

Valentine's Day and

it's Black History Month

But don't blink it'll go by quickly

It's the shortest month of the year with

only 28 days this

year and because of that

It's the only month that can pass without

a full moon. If you

just spit out your coffee

Don't fret grab a napkin. There's a full

moon on February 12th this year

All right

Let's go ahead and just

jump into today's quotes

One fun nostalgic quote and then a second

quote to tease our book

review later in the episode

Hopefully one of these quotes will speak

to you and jumpstart your

day in a positive direction

All right. The first quote is from funny

man Mike Myers who is quoted as saying

It's better to fail

trying than to never try it all

No doubt the chance that we might fail is

a scary thought but the

chance that we might succeed is

Exhilarating have the courage to take

that chance and today's teaser quote from

the book review is I

Got the feeling that I had done something

for him without his

being able to do anything

Whatever in return for me and as usual

we'll unpack that here in just a few

minutes during the book review segment

But first let's jump into our usual dose

of fun and historic facts

from this day in history

Today's news facts and

birthdays are for February 3rd in

Massachusetts issued the first paper

money in the American colonies in

1876 Albert Spalding he invested $800 to

start a sporting goods company

Manufacturing the first official baseball

tennis ball basketball

golf ball and football

That's about twenty four thousand dollars

in today's dollars in

1917 not yet involved in World War one

the United States broke off diplomatic

Relations with Germany after the Germans

announced their intention to practice

unrestricted submarine warfare

in 1928

Paleoanthropologist Davidson black he

reported his findings on the ancient

human fossils that he found in

Zucadian China in the journal nature and

he declared them to be a

new species that he named

Something that I'm not even gonna try to

pronounce, but we now

know it as Homo erectus

and on this date in

1959 it's the day when the music died

It's when the plane crashed near Clear

Lake, Iowa that killed musicians, buddy

Holly Richie Valens and JP Richardson

and in

1966 Luna 9 touchdown on the moon. That's

the unmanned Soviet spacecraft

It was the first one to achieve a soft

landing on the moon in

1990 for the first time ever the UK top

three music singles featured non-British

and non-american acts

It included Ireland's Sinead O'Connor

Australia's Kylie Minogue

and Belgium's technotronic

finally in

1995 American astronaut Eileen Collins

became the first woman to pilot a space

shuttle and she piloted

the Discovery Space Shuttle

If you were born in February, you are

either an Aquarius or

Pisces. So happy birthday

If today is your birthday you share a

birthday with actor Nathan Lane. He's 68

you know him from movies like the

birdcage the Lion King he

played the original Timon and

Australian actress Isla Fisher. She's 49

the number one song on this date in

1983 was the song Africa by Toto

This is an iconic song in any decade with

some of the most famous lyrics like I

bless the rains down in Africa

Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus

above the Serengeti. I mean come on

Interestingly Toto won a Grammy for album

of the year for Toto

for the name of the album

But the song Africa wasn't nominated for

either record of the year or song of the

year because critics

preferred the album's lead single

Rosanna another classic and one that

actually was nominated in both categories

and won the Grammy for record of the year

However, Rosanna peaked at only number

two on the US charts never reaching

number one as Africa did

the band's only number one hit

And as a side note here in a reminder if

you follow Morning Serial

podcast on Instagram you can hear

snippets from these songs that I

highlight every day and

the number one movie on

this date back in 1992

Maybe has a different vibe than the

cinematic feel that the

song Africa had well in 1992

Wayne's world was the number one movie

Wayne's world was a big screen spin-off

of the Saturday Night Live skit starring

Mike Myers as Wayne

and Dana Carvey as Garth

However, the movie has just as many

iconic quotable lines as the song Africa

I mean, we're not worthy

We're not worthy if you're

gonna spew spew into this

Yeah, and monkeys might fly out of my

butt in the bohemian rap city scene

again. Come on today

Wayne's world is the only SNL skit that

was made into a movie that has grossed

over a hundred million dollars in total

The movie grossed about a hundred and

eighty three million

With that let's move on with some

personal growth in the book review

segment of Morning Serial

This is where we take a few moments to

reflect on lessons

learned from the current book

We're reading and currently we're reading

through Dale Carnegie's how to win

friends and influence people

It's a timeless book that is consistently

on all the must-read lists and it's

packed with rock-solid advice and actions

For us all to use and build healthy

foundational concepts to live by

Last week we finished reading chapter 5

of part 2 which is entitled

how to interest people and

We learned Carnegie's principle number 5

is to talk in terms of

other people's interests

Putting in the time in the effort to find

out what other people are interested in

is helpful in both business and socially

And we'll be rewarding

to both parties involved

So now we have five of the six principles

Carnegie outlines to make

people like you since it's Monday

I'll do a quick rundown on those number

one become genuinely interested in other

people number two smile number three

Remember that a person's name is to that

person the sweetest and most important

sound in any language

number four be a good listener

Encourage others to talk about themselves

and number five talk in

terms of other people's interests

Today we start chapter 6 of part 2

entitled how to make

people like you instantly and

Carnegie starts out this chapter with the

story that again to me at least

Shows his sense of humor and sarcasm in

the end as the story goes

Carnegie was waiting in line at the post

office to mail a letter and he saw that

the clerk appeared to be

bored at his monotonous

Job, so Carnegie thought that he might

say something to the

clerk to make him like him

So Carnegie looked to find something

about the clerk he admired and Carnegie

acknowledges here that it can be hard to

find something to admire

About a stranger, but in this

case it was easy for Carnegie

He told the clerk when

it was his turn that quote

I certainly wish I had your head of hair

in quote the clerk looked up surprised

and said that it wasn't as good as it

Used to be but after some more small talk

the last thing the clerk

said to Carnegie was quote

Many people have admired my hair in quote

Carnegie goes on to say that

he bet he made that guy's day

That that guy was walking on air that he

went home to tell his wife

about it and Carnegie says

Quote I'll bet he looked in the mirror

and said it is a beautiful head of hair

in quote, which I think is funny

anyways

Carnegie told this story in public ones

and he was asked what he was trying to

get out of or from the clerk and

Carnegie contemptuously replied quote.

What was I trying to get out of him?

Three exclamation marks here by the way

and Carnegie continued

quote if we are so contemptibly

Selfish that we can't radiate a little

happiness and pass on a bit of honest

appreciation without trying to get

something out of the

other person in return if our

Souls are no bigger than sour crab

apples. We shall meet with the failure

We so richly deserve in quote and I

appreciate this quick

side bit from Carnegie again

Reminding us that this book does teach us

how to deal with people and to

specifically construct

approaches to gain certain outcomes

But it's also teaching us

just to be good human beings

Much of this book is as simple as that

and after the soapbox moment

Carnegie says quote. Oh, yes

I did want something out of that chap

I wanted something priceless and I got it

I got the feeling that I had done

something for him without his being able

to do anything whatever in return for me

That is a feeling that flows and sings in

your memory long after the

incident is passed in quote

Here Carnegie reminds us that there is

one all-important law of how we should

live and if we do it right

It will bring us

countless friends and happiness

But if we get it wrong it will lead to

endless trouble and that law again is

quote always make the other person feel

Important in quote we covered that from

John Dewey earlier in the book and

Carnegie reminds the reader that quote

The desire to be important is the deepest

urge in human nature

And the desire is what separates us from

the animals and is

responsible for civilization itself

Real in today's review

segment on what Carnegie says

Philosophers leaders and figures

throughout history have taught from the

Zorister in Persia to Confucius in China

Lao cha in the Valley of Han to Buddha

and to Jesus on the hills of Judea

Who Carnegie says summed it up best

quoting Jesus quote do unto others as you

would have others do unto you

Again, so simple, but so true and so

often hard to come by

Tomorrow Carnegie covers a story about a

man that owned a castle and how the power

of appreciation helped him get there

Well, what better way to start the week

than to remind

ourselves of the golden rule

Perhaps that will help you through a

difficult situation today or this week

another week on the grind, but keep at it

You're doing great life is what happens

when you're busy making other plans

So make those moments in between matter.

We'll see you tomorrow
