Full show transcript:

How do you feel like starting today's podcast? Well. With a bunch of rattling around wires. That sounds like a good way. Let's make a bunch of clinkity clacks before we get started. Go ahead. What's up?

Um You joined Scouts with our son. Oh, well, decades ago.

2011.

Okay. And then you were asked to kind of be a Cub Scout den leader. In 2011. You said, I'm gonna do this, but I'm gonna need some help. And I said, okay, I'll do it with you. And so you and I together led Cub Scouts for six years.

Yeah, something like that. And then we moved over the bridge. We bridged over into the troop. And then I became the Scoutmaster about a year in, and I've been the Scoutmaster uh over ten years now. Yeah. Ten years, man.

It's been a long time. So it started with you and Beck, and then me and Emery kind of, and Emory was just kind of a tag along because she was just little. And then they said girls could join, and we were like, fantastic. And so Emory was in Scouts for a long time. And so the four of us were all participating in Scouts. And then Emory decided that she didn't necessarily want to participate anymore. Right. So she dropped out.

Well, she started doing other things in school and whatever.

Uh Beck Eagled out. Yeah, you guys. He stopped going. I stopped going. So now you are the solitary member of our household who is still involved in scouts. And there are times where you go, I I wish that you guys would still come and do the things. I'm like, oh I can't.

I missed that part. Like it was a big family thing. It was a big family thing. I just go by myself all the time.

So there is a meeting tonight, a court of honor. That's right. And you mentioned that you were gonna be giving out some awards for the 50 miler that you just took with some of the scouts. And I said, Yeah, I'll go and show up. And then I found out that there was gonna be some snacks. That's right. And I said, You should have told me there were snacks a while ago, because I would have been all in on snacks.

You asked immediately. Is there any kind of food? And I said, Well, sometimes I don't know. I heard rumor about uh a potential food thing, and you were like, if that happens, I'm there.

And then I found out this morning that it is happening. You're like, oh, I'm going. So it isn't that you get to be with me or that you get to support me. Hey, hey, hey, it's that you get to have a snack.

Hey, I you just said no, I said I was gonna go to support you even before there. You didn't. I didn't there were not snacks finalized until this morning, and I had told you yesterday that I was gonna be there. If the snacks no, no. Yes. Oh, I said I was gonna be there before snacks were finalized.

So then snacks were finalized, and you were like, I'm not missing it. So there was still a chance you weren't gonna show. But now that there is a snack on the table that's not like a hot dog, you're like, I'm going. Yeah. Alright.

Anyway. If you want to get me to go somewhere and just uh provide a snack. Apparently. A good snack. It can't be a hot dog. I'm not gonna show up for a hot dog. You won't show up for a hot dog? Depends.

What's your minimum bar of like I'll show up if there is dot dot dot? I don't know. I'll show up if there's I

don't know, because there's a fine line because I also don't like potluck. So if there's gonna be a potluck, I'm oh, I'm pass.

You're gonna pass on a potluck. Right.

Uh uh I might show up for a hot dog, but I've it's gotta be a good hot dog.

Would you show up at an event and then find out there's a hot dog and be like, oh, I have a hot dog. Depends on the hot dog.

It can't just be a regular hot dog. It's gotta be like a good hot dog. I'm talking like a boiled hot dog. No, no. Like a crock pot dog. No, nope. No, count me out. Maybe a chili dog. No, oh worse.

Crockpot chili, crock pot nacho cheese, crock pot hot dog. No. No. No. Dry cold bun. No. You're not committed to me. That's what I've learned. I'm I'm not worth a nasty hot dog or chili dog.

I'll show up for you. I just won't eat the food. Josh. I am already said just gonna go before snacks were finalized.

Yeah, I just don't know if I believe you. I feel like a begrudgingly, I'm gonna go, but I'm probably gonna show up late. I'm not gonna be excited while I'm there. And because I drove, I'm gonna dip out early. I'm not gonna stand around and have combo. I'm out.

I feel like that's more the level. Of tonight. Of tonight before it was announced there would be a treat.

Because now you're like, I can suffer through all of the other stuff if I get a nice dessert. Josh. Ah, Josh me. Let's start today's show. Well, good morning. Hello. Hello, good morning.

How you doing? What? You know. There's a there's a piece of uh imaging, as we call it in the biz.

In the biz. Uh, one of the things in between the songs, it says Wake Up Class in 97 with Josh and Chantel. And it's got this little like rap thing that says uh good morning.

How you doing? Yeah. I'm doing. How are you doing? I'm doing great. You're doing. Yeah. We're both doing. Wow.

Look at that. Hello, good morning. How you doing? Yeah. Yeah. Well, good morning. Good morning. Hello. Hi. How are you? How are you doing? How are you doing? So good. Yeah. Happy to be here. All right. Nice. I'm uh I gotta look at the week. What's going on this week?

Uh, we got a birthday. Yeah, we do in our house.

Today's a birthday. Tomorrow's a birthday. The day after that's a birthday, the day after that's a birthday. This is a birthday week.

Yeah, everybody we know was born this week. Yeah.

We have like four birthdays starting today and then like every day. Pretty wild. Our daughters. And from all different families, too. Yeah.

Well, our daughter's birthday is on Wednesday. That's that's a big one. 17 years ago. I know. My baby. Yeah.

So did I have you like walking stairs and stuff at this point? Hey, what's that face? I took you on a hike up a mountain.

That was that was the first. baby It was the first one. That was okay. You sure about that? Positive.

So it took you on that walk up the hill, and then we drove and had Thanksgiving.

Different, different times. I was like eight months pregnant when you took me up the hill. Yeah. I was not close to delivering.

Listen, if you're in Pocatello, you know Red Hill. And what it takes to get up to the pillars. And it's just a casual walk.

Casual. When you've got a basketball in your in your guts. Yeah. It's just a casual walk. The doctor said, get out and walk. I know. I did.

I don't think I should have taken you up Red Hill. No.

I don't know why I trust you, really. You've given me lots of examples. You're like, hey, you want to go for a walk? I'm like, yeah.

And then hey, you want to go fly fishing? And then I take you on the steepest hills I can.

Hey, let's take this other road over here and get broken down. Why do I go anywhere with you? It's a wonder, isn't it? It is a wonder.

You think at some point some of your like self-protective impulses would kick in and you'd be like, I'm not doing that. But nope, here you come. Like a little duck. Yeah.

Like, all right. I'll go. Sounds fun. All right. Well.

So birthday week and uh do you want to go hike up Red Hill? No. On Wednesday just for fun. No.

For old time's sake. That was the different baby. It doesn't matter. Okay. You haven't done it since. No, I have not. No, I don't know. So let's go do it. It's overdue. It's been 21 years ago that you hike to be up Red Hill. Yeah. Let's go. Okay. In the fall.

It's nice. You may be later. See the colors. Maybe later. I'll do it later. Like toward November? Sure. Okay. I bet you won't.

I bet I won't either. You're right.

Well, hey, good morning. How you doing? We're back. We're back. All right. Some good news this morning. Uh, this is kind of fun. For the 10th year in a row, the uh boardman Subaru dealership in Ohio has stepped up to support their local schools. They surprised teachers at the Boardman Glenwood Junior High School with a $15,000 donation.

That's awesome. That's a huge amount of money. And the funds will help teachers purchase essential classroom supplies without dipping into their own pockets. It benefits 25 classroom classrooms, over 500 students, and the donation will also support after school programs like a 3D printing program, chess club, and hands-on science projects, which I think is super awesome.

The dealership owner, uh, his name is Rob Felman. He makes it a point each year to help the schools in his community because he appreciates how the schools have set him up for success. He says, Education, I feel helps out, makes a community better.

It gives people a head start in life, and if you pay attention in school, you can really get a lot of stuff accomplished. And so he said, let's give back. And I think that's a really generous way to do that. $15,000 going to the junior high school in Boardman, Ohio. So Cool.

good job, guys and gals. Nice. It's good news.

It was a football filled weekend at our house. I'll tell you, football is back. The TV was cranking out all the commentary and the whistles and the sideline fights a couple of different times in the uh in the late game.

So much drama.

I know. What do you want to talk about? Week one.

Oh, the Vikes are back in baby.

so is your classy until kickoff hat. Yes. So then you turn into a trash panda. Hey, hey, hey.

Listen to me when I say that I only turn into a trash panda when somebody starts it. I see. I didn't start it. Sometimes you start it. Sometimes I do start. Most of the time you start it. Most of the time I do start it. First step. Yeah. Admitting. Right.

So let's start early on in the morning. We had the uh Bengals Bucks game, uh, which our son is a big Bengals fan. So that was the first game that was on. It was frustrating because we were trying to figure out uh, you know, how to watch.

And I'm I I'm getting a little tired of having to have 700 streaming services to watch football. Yeah. That's a little crazy. Yeah.

Agreed. And so when we finally figured out how to watch the Bengals Bucks game, uh, it was nearly halftime. Uh, but we did get to see that game, and uh the Bengals won. So our son was in a good mood pretty much all day.

Yeah, he was. Which is it is interesting. He said at one point, it's crazy uh how strong the Bengals hold on my mental health is and I went, Yeah, you think that's not that's not uh that's not healthy.

I think that's true for a lot of these football fans. Sure. I'm glad that he recognizes that. Yeah. Well he said it out loud, and I went, it is crazy.

Uh let's see. What other games do you want to talk about? The Ravens. Okay, Ravens beat the Colts 4123. That happened. Yep, that did happen. Yeah.

So that was exciting because I do like the Ravens too.

The Steelers pulled off a win over the Falcons. That was a thing that happened. Uh, and I think there was something going on with the Falcons quarterback situation. Uh, because they were on like QB three or something. No. Because Tua and Pennix were not playing. So they were on like their third string quarterback. Yeah.

Uh the Raiders with Kirk Cousins.

Now that was quite the thing. And Ashton Janty. Yeah, 27 to 13 over the Dolphins, the Raiders. Uh, and yeah, watching Cousins and Janty and Janty uh took a hit and was flying around like a madman. That guy, he's got to be careful with his body.

Yeah, and I know he's young, but that's all gonna catch up to him. Uh and then of course, the uh Vikings Packers game. I mean the Vikings who our boss's favorite team who you had a lot to say about.

He started it. Hey, hey. He gave me a boo. I saw that, and then he thought we're not gonna get into it. Okay.

All right. Uh, but that game ended up in your favor 39 to 12. Something at the end of that game really happened. Kyler Murray got hurt. Uh, so you had your backup. It wasn't 39 to 12.

39 to 22. There, I believe is what I said. You said 12. Well, I meant 22. But anyway, uh what happened to Kyler?

He had a concussion. That is correct. And so then your backup quarterback, quarterback number two is look at how well you know your team. Look at how well you know your team.

Uh, what's his name? I do know his name. Uh uh geez, Louise. Josh, why are you doing this? It's Carson Wentz. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Thank you. It was right on the tip of my neck. Yes. Okay. And he did great. Yeah. He came through.

It was really cool to see uh Jordan Mason, 15 carries and a touchdown. Justin Jefferson. Uh, he had eight catches, two touchdowns, which is a big deal for Jets because he had a really, really bad time last season.

Yeah, he did. So it's nice to see your team doing some stuff. There's one more game for this week. It's coming up tonight. And it is. Ew, who even cares?

I'm not even gonna talk about it.

It's the Broncos and Chiefs. Oh, it's the Broncos and the Chiefs. Who even cares? I think several people care. Uh quite a quite a large handful. Yep. All right. Well, that's what's going on. Anything else you want to talk about? No.

Cowboys, Giants. That game was a little bit of a bad thing. Kind of a bore. It was, and then there was some fighting early on. Those two teams were having it out on the field. That pretty wild. Uh glad they settled down and just played some football, but anyway.

Football's back. Okay. Here we go. They lost, by the way. The Cowboys did 28 to 20. I see a note here that says you have something else to talk about, but I just don't know the lead in.

Okay, because uh I the lead in is you're supposed to be kind of my um I feel like you're my bodyguard. Oh, you do? Yeah, I do. Since when? Like you're supposed to have my back since we got married, and you agreed to stand up for me. But you're Did I say that? Yeah. It's unspoken. Oh. You're supposed to stand up for me.

And you're not against the bullies that are our children. Yes.

Yeah. You don't. They say all kinds of things to me, and you just kind of giggle and walk away. And I go. You didn't have my back.

Handle your own. It's our own children. They're in the vehicle dri riding with us on the way home. Yeah, they're bullies. Yeah.

Every set of goat is my spirit animal.

And did she explain why? No. She didn't explain why.

No. I said, Beck, why did she say that? And he said, I think it's probably the the chin hair. Whoa. I know. And I go, was it the maybe the cloven hooves? And he said, could be. Mm-hmm. They're mean to me. And you just ignore it. You just go.

I don't even know. I can I didn't hear this whole conversation.

You're just ignoring it. Was I nearby? Yeah, you were there in the car.

Oh, it was in the car. It wasn't while we were near a goat.

We were near a goat, and you were there. And then later in the car, there was more to be said. You just didn't say anything. Supposed to have a lot of people. I mean, listen, no.

One of your childhood nicknames is nanny goat. So I hated it though. I understand. And you all know I hated it. I don't I didn't tell the kids that was your nickname. They know. I didn't tell them that.

Oh, so you're saying because you didn't bring that up, that's your standing up for me.

You could have feel the contribute. I didn't, I didn't also say, Yes, kids, you're right. Because I don't I don't agree. I said I think your spirit animal is a raccoon. I think it's why you like stripes so much. I think is you're wearing stripes today. I think it's why you like throwing trash around. I think it's a little bit about your your behavior is very raccoon-esque.

I So I told the kids, I said, Are you saying that a goat is my spirit animal because I am the greatest of all time? Ah. And they just walked away. They didn't even. So is that a no? I think that was a no. Okay. And you nowhere to be found. As I'm being bullied. Was I looking at uh something some other animal?

Was I was I looking at Doesn't matter. A chicken or a sheep.

You're supposed to have my back. And you didn't. Hey.

You can stand up to our own children.

I can't. They're mean.

They just said that you look like a goat.

They didn't say I looked like it.

You remind a goat reminded them of you. They looked at a goat and they went, that's mom.

Mean. So mean.

Was it the weird little teeth that stick out sometimes?

They didn't say. I don't know.

Was it the sound? The uh maybe that's what they hear when you speak. I don't know what it is. You have to stop. You are gonna need to ask more questions.

You're making it worse. You who's supposed to be my teammate. Was it the parkour? You have fallen in line with the bullies.

Is it because the goats do parkour? And they've seen you do parkour. And they're like, yeah, that's it. I don't know what it is. Blah. Like that. Quit being rude. I didn't bring it up.

Just trying to live my goat life over here. Yeah, I guess.

Leave me, leave me alone. I'm over here doing goat stuff. I disagree. I don't think you're a goat.

Oh, now you come to my defense.

I already said I think you're a raccoon. And it's way better. Not better. Well, yeah. They have that like those eyes and that little hands. Very much on par with your look. Eyes and little hands. Yeah, and they love cotton candy.

But don't get it wet. Because they can't figure out whenever they are done with with food, they're like, who ate it all? Where there was all this food, and now there's none no no more. Where to go? I kind of do that. Yeah. Who ate all these cookies? I don't know. Yeah, I do that. I am a raccoon. Yeah. I know.

Okay. I'm gonna tell another story about me being bullied by my kids. Because one was and then I kind of hesitated before I said that because I went, I don't want everybody thinking that my kids are just jerks because they're not. It's all in good fun. Yeah. It's in jest.

Yeah. They're actually pretty great kids. They're kind and they're empathetic and they do nice things. And but they can be a little bit of a bully to me. So we were looking at it.

I think they just dish out what you dish out to them. I think that's it.

Yeah, right. That's fair. That seems fair. We were looking for Halloween decorations. We were shopping for some Halloween decorations over the weekend. And there was a bunch of cute Halloween banners. And I like a good banner. You love a garland.

I do like a good garland slash banner slash my windows always have something hanging from them. You'd think you would do them in here. I should. I should do something in here. Yeah.

This place just sits all year and then Christmas comes around and we go, oh boy. And we go crazy. Uh but up until that point, it's just boring.

So we're looking at Halloween banners, and I go, Oh, this one's cute. Oh, this one's cute. And everyone goes, you know, you have a Halloween banner that you bought a couple of years ago, that fabric one that you bought that you're never gonna finish. And I went, Whoa, Zoe.

I don't need this kind of grief in my life. And she goes, Well, you said you were gonna finish it last year, and then Halloween came and went, and you go, Well, that just means I've got plenty of time to finish it for next year. And she goes, guess what?

Halloween's coming out. up. It's next year. So is the is uh what is this banner? I don't know if I've even seen this. Is this just something you tucked away in your craft room? You're like, I'll get to it.

I tucked it away, but then I was gonna do it last year, and then I took all the stuff out, and Halloween came. Yeah.

So you gotta cut some fabric. Yeah, and then you gotta sew some fabric. Yeah, two things that you like to do.

I don't like the cutting. I like the sewing. Okay. I can't stand cutting fabric.

And then you get a finished garland that you get to hang up that's kind of cute.

Yeah, it's super cute. And I'll tell you what it is. It's like a countdown to Halloween. Oh, like a paper chain. It's like a paper chain, but it's fabric. So is it velcro?

Yeah, it's fabric, and then you velcro the sides, and then you can rip them off. So you can use it every year. Yeah, how fun. I know. We'll get it done. I'm gonna do it. How many loops are on the chain? 31.

Oh, so you got a little bit of time. Yeah, yeah. You have to have it posted before October 1st.

On October 1st, yeah.

I mean, you want it before to see the full chain because on day one you take a loop off. Correct. So you better get it up sooner. I know. Okay. Why sooner? Because then you can actually see the full chain. I see.

I see. Because on the first, you're taking the loop off. And that one loop is like, well, I got to hang for five minutes. And now I'm gone. You see? Yeah, I see. As long as you see.

You feel sad for that tiny little loop that gets. Don't you? A little bit.

I mean, that loop being first to go is like, well, see you later. Stack. And then the next day is like a buddy. Yeah, see. No, I get it. We also added a lot of human emotion to an inanimate object.

I'm gonna get that. I'm gonna get that banner done.

Don't even at one point over the weekend you said, uh, if we get enough done, I want to get out the fallen Halloween decorations, and I went, oh.

I know you did. That's why I didn't ask to do it yesterday. Because I knew your emotions.

I heard you say it and I had to go.

I know. I knew what you were feeling. That's why I didn't ask for your help yesterday. I said, no. To get the bins down. Yep. I said, he's not feeling it. I won't even ask. So I didn't. But you wanted to I kinda want them to.

Well, no, because there's some stuff I want to do still. We we did some stuff in our house. Yeah, I know. And um, there's still some stuff I want to do before I get the Halloween decorations out. Okay. I'm not ready yet. I was just excited about it. But I'm not ready yet. You're good with that. You let me know. Okay, I will. Show you where the ladder's at. There you go. Have fun.

Get those terrible uh bully children to help you. Yeah, no kidding. Put them to work. Burn off some energy. Doing all this stuff. They disappeared at the house. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, I know. They went nowhere to be found while we were working.

The second we started cleaning and doing stuff, they were like, peace out. Yeah. Later.

Well, okay. Well, uh, good luck with your Halloween banner. If you don't get it done, I'll join Emory and giving you some grief for next year. Not surprised.

That's all I get from anybody. Well, just grief. You get something done.

Just kidding.

What is your TV watching habit? I guess I uh what do you mean? Oh, let me tell you what I mean. Okay. So like people I feel like everybody has this habit that they I feel like their hands get bored when they're watching TV. I see. So a lot of people will crochet while they're watching TV. I see. A lot of people will eat peanuts while they're watching TV. Okay. A lot of people will. What were some of the other ones I thought twirling hair? Yeah.

Is one that I do. Yeah, you twirl your hair. Biting your nails. I hate that. I do that. I get I get hand boredom. I do too. Not so much at home, but definitely in the movie theater.

Yeah. And then I end up like snacking on popcorn or licorice or whatever. Uh and I don't particularly care for it. I I need to like pack a fidget thing.

Oh. The worst thing, I'll get I'll bring like a floss pick to because I'll have popcorn. I'll have the floss pick hanging. Yeah, you do that. And you will tap me on the shoulder like I'm making a bunch of noise with it. It gets a little bit noisy sometimes.

Yeah, where you're like, I've had enough of it.

Especially in the quiet moments.

Right, but then it goes keeping that's some sort of tactile thing that's keeping me specifically from biting my fingernails, which I've been pretty good at over the past few months, especially. I've really like uh tried to I've been making a conscious effort to avoid that nervous tick thing. Good job. It's been going well. Very good job. Yeah.

I think it's just uh like a boredom thing with your hands because mine get bored too. That's why I'm constantly I get a pair of tweezers and then it's like I gotta pluck every eyebrow hair.

But then you're missing the show. Because you're trying to look in a mirror. No, no, no, no. You're just doing it by feel. Yes. That's dangerous. I just feel my eyebrows and I go, yeah, that one feels long.

That's dangerous. And also you're probably missing the long one and pulling good ones.

I know. That's why sometimes I have to put the tweezers down and be like, I can't do this. Yeah. Okay. So your your TV watching habit is biting on your flosser.

That's probably the most common thing. Yeah. As you're biting your nail now. Yeah. Yeah. As I'm biting my nail now. Right. That's just because I had a jaggedy piece. Oh, is that right? It's fixed now. For a file.

I think mine are I twirl my hair. Yep. I bite my nails. And then I I do the tweezing thing. Those are my top three TV watching habits. And snacking. Right. A lot of snacking. Mostly snack. Mostly snacking.

No, I at home I can I don't feel as like uh nervous energy or something. Like I can sit and watch a movie at home and I don't have those same impulses.

It's not nervous for me. I think my hands just get bored. Like I need something to do with my, and then that's when you go, you could scratch my back.

That's a good idea. Let's put this to work. I like this.

And I go, okay, I'll scratch your back.

Because it's harder to do it a theater. Yeah. You can't be like lift your shirt up and be like, scratch my back. I And do that. Sit in front of you or on your lap. Like that's just it's not gonna happen.

In the theater. Right. Let's try it sometimes. I would be weirded out if people were like scratching backs and stuff. I'd be like, no, this is not the place. You're doing weird stuff. Yeah, stop it.

Quit doing weird stuff. Yeah, quit itching. Okay.

So that's you, but your main thing, your TV watching habit is the floss pick.

Yeah, that's really common. Yeah.

I know that if I do bite my nails, the kids get mad. Emery gets mad.

Just like It makes a chonky noise. You can hear the clicking. Chonk chonk. Yeah. It's chonky. Chunky. Uh huh. It's a chonky noise. Okay. Yeah. Well, thank you for asking. Uh No, I know. sharing.

I'm sure everybody has one. Yeah.

Because I would agree, floss pick's probably my big thing right now.

I should do something more productive, is what I'm just thinking. Scratch my back. That's not productive.

Feels great for me. Feels productive. I could. Relieves itch.

Productive. I've painted my fingernails before watching a movie, and then you just get mad about that too. I know. You just get mad about everything.

You ruin everybody's nice movie watching experience. Would you rather that I would you rather doesn't happen until 9 40? I'll save it. Oh, okay. Good deal. It was indeed a meat weekend. Even though you didn't like like me calling that. No, because it sounded so gross.

Our son did not like me calling that uh meat weekend. No. He said, quit saying that.

Quit saying that. I'm like, it's a meat weekend. You had how much pork did you have? Well, 8.2 pounds of pork shoulder. Uh that I smoked on Saturday morning woven.

For the first time in your smoker from Father's Day.

This is true. I've done a couple of things. I did a couple of steaks and I did some. I did a reverse sear on a couple of steaks and I did uh chicken originally.

Yeah. After I seasoned the thing and kind of did the first uh you know initial setup and burn. I did chicken on the very first day because I wanted to do something in it, but I didn't want it to take you know hours and hours. So I did that smoked chicken, which turned out pretty dang good. Uh, and then I did a couple of reverse sear steaks, which were nice, and then this was really like okay, I'm gonna get a big piece of meat and I'm gonna smoke it and we're gonna have ourselves a delicious uh pulled pork. And here's what I learned. What'd you learn? 8.2 pounds of pork shoulder makes a whole bunch of pulled pork. A lot.

I'm not mad about it because it was delicious.

So now I'm shopping around. Like when I go to the grocery store, I was looking at different meats, and I was like, oh yeah. Like I found where I could get a couple of smaller ones. Uh they were on like a buy one, get one uh kind of deal, and I went, oh, now I could buy one, I could freeze one, and then I could have two ones. A couple of people You know what I mean?

That'd be all right. that's not a bad idea. I don't know. There was a couple of people that were like, Well, we like pulled pork. You why didn't you invite us over?

I look, I didn't want to have your first go-round. Yeah, like what if it went bad? Right. Like, what if it took forever? Or what if it didn't turn out? You know, like I had concerns.

And so uh for me, I went, I don't want to have people over the first time I'm trying this. Like I feel good about it now that I would be like, okay, yeah, I if I wake up early enough, I would know that like I could definitely produce dinner.

The original recipe you had said that it was gonna take you like 12 hours.

Well, no, it took it took a long time. I did, but they were saying that like they estimate like two hours per pound or so.

So we were looking at dinner, you woke up a little bit later than you wanted to, and so we were like, we're gonna eat dinner at like eight o'clock at night. But it actually worked out well, it was right at five. Yeah.

Yeah, it was awesome. It was it turned out really good.

We turned into pulled pork nachos that were very good. Beck said it was the best meal he's ever had.

It was top of his list. I've I feel like that's some pretty good high praise. That is actually so I kept uh a couple of pounds uh are in the fridge, and then I froze three pounds in individual uh little bags. So uh we have pulled pork for like meals later down the road. You go, hey, you know what would be good for dinner tonight? Pull pork nachos or pulled pork sandwiches or just pulled pork, some potatoes and vegetables or something. Like, let's just make some pulled pork. I got it, ready to go. You know what I mean? It's exciting. Meat weekend. Meat weekend. Yeah. Uh more of a meat Saturday. Would I yeah, that's true.

What I thought was funny is I kept forgetting that you were cooking that, and so you kept checking your phone, and you'd be like, 107. Yep. 210. 210.

I don't know. No, I never said two ten. And I just kept going. Finished temperature is like 203 to 205. If I hit 210, I've done too much.

I just kept forgetting what you were talking about. You just kept doing numbers. 105.

Yeah, I can check the uh the temperature probes on my phone. That was pretty nice. I I have Bluetooth. I kind of decided I want Wi-Fi ones. So I've got to upgrade my probes. Oh. Yeah. I'm gonna put that on my Christmas wish list. A nice set of uh wireless probes. How exciting.

Can't wait to buy those for Christmas for you.

I'm pretty excited. If I get that for Christmas, that's a good gift. Okay. Because then I they hook up to the Wi-Fi, so I can check it anywhere. I could leave the house. Now, I did have on this particular cook, I did have uh an hourly uh spritz that I had to do to really build up that crust on the outside, but I think it were I think it paid off that crust because you were pretty happy with the uh with the little crusty.

I like the I like the crispy bits. Yep. Good job. It was it turned out it was delicious. I'm pretty excited. I know that my sister knows that I don't necessarily like meat, and she goes, You ate that. And I think, yeah, it was.

Why did she say it like that? You ate that like it looked like gross. What does she mean you ate that?

I said, Yeah, it was good, and she goes, That's a little pulled pork. I go, pulled pork's different because it's like little.

small little pieces of meat in a big wad.

I don't like big I don't like big chunks of meat. Right. So don't give me a big old chunk of meat.

Right. Well, and you could sprinkle it out across your nachos and I did. Yeah, and then you you made your own plate, and I will say about halfway through, you went, I did too much. I did way too much. Did I clean my plate? I'm no quitter. No quitter. All right. Well, anyway, it was a meat weekend, and I'm still gonna call it that. Okay.

We watched the Moana live action.

It was pretty good. I did too. I thought uh I thought it was uh it was really good. I didn't mind, I know a lot of people were uh kind of given uh Dwayne the Rock Johnson rock the Dwayne Johnson uh a little bit of uh uh grief about his wig.

Yeah, I didn't seem to mind. It was fine.

Yeah, it was I mean didn't affect his performance. No, but uh you just see him, you know him that without hair. And I and I think uh if you look at him side by side with the animated uh uh what's the what's his name? Demi God.

I cannot think. Maui Maui. If you look at him side by side with the animated Maui, you go, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, I clearly it wasn't based on him visually.

I feel like animated Maui's a little like he's strong, right, but he isn't like muscle, he's just like shapes, you know what I mean? Yeah. Whereas the rock is is

more I think you and Emery had heard some stuff about the movie prior, and so you guys both had a little chip on your shoulder about a couple of things, and you kept saying, we don't like this because everybody said not to like this. And I was like, I don't know.

I don't know that I necessarily had that in my head. I wasn't I wasn't uh you know, side by side comparis comparing because of what other people had said. I think I was just looking at it and forming my own opinion. And I feel like I liked it. Yeah, no, I was fine. I I really enjoyed the movie. It's one of the better live action uh that they've made for sure.

Emery said that she had a crush on the cartoon version of one of the I don't know any of their names. I'm really bad. Uh one of the ancestors? Yeah, yeah. And she was like, they better not mess this up. They better make it cute because the cartoon one is cute, and then they showed the real life person, and she goes, they didn't mess it up.

They he's pretty cute. And I go, yeah, but have you seen the dad? Right.

You were like, look at the dad ancestor, the silvery hair. I'm like, stop it, you two. Trying to watch a movie.

I also noticed that when I was Emery's age, there were like two animated princes that we had to choose from that were cute. Prince Eric. Prince Eric and Gaston. You had more than that. And the beast, I guess.

All of Prince Charming.

You didn't have a Prince Charming has like two sections, two seconds of screen time from Cinderella. That's it. No, Emery has. She has all kinds of princes that she can look at and be like, I guess, not even necessarily princess, just like cartoon handsome cartoon.

Cartoon handsome. Handsome cartoons. What? What are you talking about?

I don't know It's hard to talk. Words putting words together.

You had you could have looked a he-man.

He man. Yeah. No, I'm just talking Disney. Okay. Disney specific.

So we had Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid. You had Beast from Beauty and the Beast. You had Aladdin. Oh, Aladdin. You you had uh John Smith in Pocahontas. No. You had the hunchback of Notre Dame. Yeah, yeah. You had Hercules.

You had uh the dude in Mulan. Uh whatever his name is. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you had Tarzan. You had way more to choose from than you're giving yourself credit. Plus you had Prince Charming. Wow. And all the dwarfs in Snow White. What do you mean you had no one to choose from? Mupasa. Sure. And Mufasa. Come on now.

Handsome cartoons. Robin Hood.

And you did have Rob. And the genie from Aladdin as well.

That's okay. You're right. I had so many to choose from. El Guapo. You know. So many to choose from. What I think, I just thought it was funny that she was like, oh, that boy is cute. And I go, Yeah, but uh, did you see his dad?

Yeah. Uh Prince Adam, I believe is the name of the beast. I believe his name is Prince Adam.

No, no one ever knows that.

It's what I'm looking up. I'm I'm seeing that here. I'm pretty sure. Prince Adam? Yeah. From Beauty and the Beast. I think his name is what it says. His name is Prince Adam.

No, that's not a real Prince Eric.

You gotta look him up. That's him. That's the one from the just said Prince Eric. Prince I said Prince Eric and Prince Adam. And Prince Charming. Adam. And Prince Aladdin. I think his name is Prince Adam.

Yeah, I think you're right. But also.

Did you know his name was Prince Adam?

Nobody like he was cuter as the beast. I everybody when he transformed into his real person, everyone was like, no.

Also, Prince Charming is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as well. Cinderella is Prince Henry charming. They are different charmings. In Snow White, it is Prince Florian charming. In Cinderella, it is Prince Henry charming. In Sleeping Beauty, it is Prince Philip charming.

I actually knew that. They are different charmings. They are three of them, all called different first names. Different charmings.

Yeah, that's right. Prince Adam is the beast. Then you had Prince Aladdin.

Then you had Captain John Smith. No. You're still no on him, huh? Prince Lee Shang is the one from Milan.

Yeah, he's cute. Okay. And then you could go, Princess the Frog was way later. So you don't get that. You don't get Flynn Ryder from Rapunzel. You don't get Flynn. All right. And then you get all the frozen and et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

So that was way after me. I had three. Prince Charming. Three different charmings. And an Adam and an Eric. Ta-da. Dude.

You know when you're uh like loading laundry in and uh and then you get everything done and you get it started, and then you walk upstairs and you go, Oh, I dropped a sock on the way or whatever. And then you gotta pick it up and you run back downstairs and you hit pause. Yeah, and then it unlocks the lid and you get to throw that piece of laundry back in, and then you close it and you hit start again.

Yeah. I feel like that's how making bread went from you yesterday. I feel like, and at one point you said, if I could just follow a recipe, and I said, Well, where was your brain?

Dude, that's my problem is whenever I have to follow a recipe, there's always something that I've forgotten. Always.

This is what I hear. I mean, it's been minutes since you had loaded the zucchini bread into the oven. Ten 10 minutes. And you go, I totally forgot chocolate chips. And I said, Hold on, hold on, hold on. Let's do this like the laundry. Let's open the oven, let's pull them out. We'll put the chocolate chips on top, and we'll use a chopstick to push them down in. And then we'll put them back in. And you were like, that might work. So we did that. And it did. It worked fine. They were great.

My chopstick, I was kind of stirring it.

Yeah, you were doing like uh like you were trying to make that like fancy. No, I was not. You're trying to get that ribbon of chocolate in the bread.

That's exactly what I was doing.

But it was spiraled. And you because you were just mixing.

You said, Oh, I was just gonna push him down in there because it's already got some structure to it.

Yeah, the edges have already started to firm up. So I was just gonna poke them down in. And you were like, yeah, it does have some firming up on the edges. Whatever. Hey, it turned out great. It tastes great. It's got chocolate chips in it. You wouldn't know you forgot them.

Do you know what's so dumb too when I cook? Like, most of the time I've forgotten stuff because I either have kids that are waiting to eat because they're hungry, or like we got to be somewhere, and so I've got to like the certain amount of time that I have to cook. Yesterday there was nothing happening. I was like, I'm gonna make some zucchini bread, and I can take my time because we got nowhere to be. There's football on, like this is a great way to usher in some fall. Some fresh zucchini bread cooking, smell up the house, football in the background. Awesome. Shredding the zucchini, baking it all up. I think I was singing some songs in my head. I was having a great time. And then I went.

Ten minutes after they'd been in the oven. You were you're cleaning up the dishes and you were doing all that stuff, and you went, I totally forgot chocolate chips. Hey. It's like dropping a sock. It's the same thing. You just pause the process. They still had like 45 minutes left to bake. There was plenty of time.

And it was just chocolate chips. It's not like I forgot the flour.

Or zucchini. You know, oh, I totally forgot zucchini.

It would have been okay without the zucchini, I think, too. I the problem was that this the recipe that I use typically calls for like a lemon peel in it. And I there's a tiny little section at the bottom that says, if you want to make zucchini chocolate bread, omit the lemon.

And put it on. put in chocolate chips. You were asking me about lemon. You were like do you have a lemon and I was like, I have lemon juice, but I don't have a lemon, no. And then you uh you were like, oh man, this isn't gonna turn out.

I'm all worried about it. So you ask, you read that part. Yeah, but you just didn't think to omit and then move in. So what did you put lemon juice in it, or did you just skip that step? I skipped that step.

And didn't do chocolate chips at that point, which is when you would have done it. Correct. Yeah. Yeah. And then you just read the one part, you didn't read the rest of the part. Correct. Yeah, got it.

Yeah. And then you said, Where's your head at? And I said, I don't know. Yeah.

It was like, what were you thinking about when you were not doing the chocolate chips?

All of the things I was thinking about all of the things.

You should just think about the recipe at the moment.

No, you should try to just the one thing.

I never just do the one thing. There's always a million things happening in my brain. But what about just the one thing? I could have, but I didn't. My the next step is to get our daughter to eat the zucchini bread because she refuses to even try it.

She wouldn't do the zucchini brownies that we ate two pans of over the past couple of months. Yep. She won't eat the zucchini bread that you made that's delicious. It is delicious. I like to make zoodles and they and she gets mad about having zoodles.

I know, and as many times as we all tell her, even Beck is like, Emory, you can't even taste it. Yeah. She's like, nope. No.

It's got vegetables in it. But she likes veggies. I don't understand. I don't get it either.

I just I always wanted to raise a headstrong girl. I just didn't want her to be this headstrong.

Well eventually one day she'd be like, I tried it, it's great. It was delicious.

She says she's tried it, and I'm like, you have not. No.

You're not going to be able to do that. a liar She said that about the brownies too I'm like No, you have not. I raised a liar. I know I'm not hungry. Uh but do we have any chips?

Yeah. I don't know what kind of conversation you're hoping to have in regards to me having a bit of a mental breakdown at the garage door. Uh, but I look, we have a an automatic garage door opener.

and Uh and it's I mean, it's we installed it when we bought the house uh 14 years ago. Uh-huh. Uh it was one of the very first things.

It was like, oh, it's got a garage door, but it doesn't have a garage door opener. And I thought, that'd be fun. Let's get that. Uh, and we'll put that in. And so it got installed.

Uh, my dad helped me do the whole thing. Yeah. And over the past, I don't know, three or four years, it's slowly been like dying. And it's been super frustrating because I have to tap it with a broom handle in order to get it to like even wake up. And then when you push the button, uh it used to be you could open it up all the way, and then when you'd go to close it, you'd have to tap it because it would like short out or something.

Like, there's something wrong inside the garage door opener. But it basically like turns off. It it loses power.

It's like, nah, I'm not on anymore. And so then you tap it with the broom handle, and it's like, I'm awake again. And then you push the button, and then the door would go down a little bit and it would do it again. And uh, you'd have to do that like uh like four times or something to close the garage door.

Well, that's just over the past couple years has gotten worse and worse and worse. And now when I try to open it, I have to tap it to wake it up. Hey, bud, time to do your job. And then I push the button and it starts to open and it gets like a foot and then stops. And then you tap it and you push the button and it doesn't keep going up and then it goes back down. And I I'm so frustrated by the garage. I was just telling our boss about it. He's standing in here, and I was like, man, because he was complaining about his garage door. It expands and contracts in the heat, so he has an issue where he can't open his garage door, and I went, I gotta, I got a whole thing. And I was having a bad day the other day, and I was tapping it and it was not opening tapping his uh loose T.

The tapping got harder. I got more and more frustrated, and then finally I was like, I'm gonna break something if I don't take my frustration away. So I closed the door and I walked away, very angry. And I was and you were like, what's going on?

I was like, everything in this house is broken, and I was having a dad crash out. Well, just standing here two seconds ago, he goes, Yeah, so I have to go pull the handle and then lift it up manually, and I went. I could pull the handle and lift it up manually. It just occurred to me a couple of minutes ago I could pull that stupid red handle and open the door manually with my own arms and muscles, and I'm really frustrated by that.

I'm very frustrated by that. Because I could do that, yeah. You could, and then I wouldn't have had to have been so frustrated that day. I was so mad that I gave up on the project. I was like, I have to go. I have to go. I was so blinded by rage that I couldn't even think critically to go pull the little red handle. You can lift the door by yourself.

You ever seen that scene in a Christmas story where the dad is in the basement

and yelling at

the banging and of lots of curse words coming from the basement? I mean, it wasn't that bad. Is how you are in the garage.

I was I was I kept my composure.

You are a very even tempered peppered

person until you're not, and it takes a lot to get you there, but I was very, very angry.

Even on Saturday, we were cleaning out the garage, and we had to move the bikes out, and you said, Do you want to go get the broom handle so I can tap on the thing? And I go, Nope, let's just go out the side door because we're having a great day, and I don't want it to get ruined.

Yeah, and not once in there did you go just pull the red handle and lift the door yourself?

No, I didn't even think that existed.

I'm so upset that I now know I could have just lifted the door myself.

What does it take to fix that permanently? We probably just need to buy a new, a whole new system, right?

I mean, either that or I've got to take it apart and figure out what's wrong with it, but I don't want to do that.

No, so no, we just need to install the new, we need to reinstall a new garage door opener. Yeah.

But I don't know if uh if there's uh like can I retrofit it? Like, can I just replace the motor? Or am I gonna have to redo the whole chain system too? Yeah, yuck. Yuck. Stop it. Yuck. Yuck. Quit it. Dad crash out. Yeah.

Sorry about the garage door.

Why did anybody tell me about the red handle? Pull the red handle. Come on. Would you rather this or that? It's a gross one.

Warning. Trigger warning.

What? Would you rather you done?

Would you rather be baby birded by a stranger every time you eat? That's disgusting. Or only eat cat food for the rest of your life. Also disgusting. I refuse. Okay, okay, okay, okay. Would you rather no? Would you rather be baby birded?

No, why is that even an option?

Or a baby birded by someone that you know. No. Not better. This is gross. I told you. I told you it was gross. Why did you write a gross one? Because it made me kind of giggle.

It's so gross. I don't want to play.

Well, I'm gonna pick cat food because that's the obvious answer.

Wet cat food or dry cat? food? Dry. Dry. See, that's a better question.

It's wet cat food or dry cat? Yeah, would you rather have you have you have to eat cat food for every meal? Okay.

Would you rather have dry cat food or wet cat food? Dry. Why not the wet cat food? Because it's grosser. It's like pate. No.

Oh, fine. Have it on a cracker. It smells so bad. I know it has. That's why I picked dry.

I can't chomp on those bits.

Then you're gonna have to soak them in water. And that's essentially.

Maybe they get all fluffy. I don't want that. It's like cat food cereal. I know. Why did you do something so gross? Because it made me laugh. I don't want to play this.

You're not gonna do the baby bird at all. No. Okay. By a stranger, by someone you know. No. I don't want to play anymore. Going home. Do you want to be a part of Halloween club? Who's the president? Emory. What does it entail? It entails watching a Halloween movie. Now she wants to do one Halloween scary movie a day starting October 1st. I think that's a little extreme. It seems a little what's the word I want to say.

Too high of an expectation.

Yeah, it seems a little overachieving. Like a Halloween advent. And then she said, you don't have to do all of them. Just do as many as you can. I'm gonna do all of them. And I said, I there's no way I can watch a Halloween movie every day. There's no way. There's too much going on. There's too much going on. There's no way I can set aside two hours every day to watch a movie. Right. It's just impossible for me.

I can't even set aside 45 minutes to go to the gym every day. I know. So how am I supposed to watch a movie? It's not happening.

No, I can't even set aside an hour a day to work on my drums. That's what I'm saying. So can't. I can't. So she's probably gonna do one a day. I don't think I want to join.

She let me also say I appreciate the invite. Because I feel like these clubs that you two start just happen spontaneously, like when you're in the car talking. Yeah. And then you're like, that's a great idea.

We should start that right now. And then you go get ice cream and no one else is involved. And then you're like, we started ice cream club, and I went, I love ice cream. I didn't get invited ice cream club. And then I feel left out. I don't really want to be in Halloween scary movie club.

This is why we leave you out, though. Because you're like, hey, this

is the first time I've been invited and said no. So this is why we don't invite you.

We invited you to the ice cream club, and you go, that's not how you rate things.

It's not how I rate things. I didn't tell you, I didn't tell anyone else how to do their rating. I said I'm gonna do it my own way, and you all didn't like how I participated in the club. So I said, forget it. You got too many rules and bylaws in this club.

We have no rules and bylaws. Well, not written down anyway.

Yeah, until I go, oh, I like to have everything all at once and then rate it. And you're like, no, that's ridiculous. And I went, well, I'm not doing it. So I excluded myself from the ice cream club because you guys had too many restrictions on how I could participate. You two just do whatever you want, but it's like if if it was a pickleball club, and I'd be like, yeah, let's learn the rules. Let's get the gear, let's do the thing. And you're like, no. No. We're just here to smack the ball and have a good time. And I'd be like, well, I don't want to play that.

Pickleball club does not involve rules. See? One rule. Have fun. Yeah. Second rule. If you're playing by the rules, you're out.

See? It makes no sense. But if I have a suggestion, you're like, no, that's you just leave. It's crazy. So I appreciate the invitation to Halloween scary movie club. I'm a pass on this one. Okay. Do you listen?

You don't have to be a part of it always. Maybe you just show up when you feel like it.

I'm just saying, don't like put me on the member roll when you're taking when you're taking head count at the beginning of your meetings. I just don't want you to say my name. If I happen to be there, you can put me down as like a guest attending.

Oh, look, we had a special guest. But I don't want to be like, Josh, are you here? And I'm gonna I'm never gonna be like present. That's not you're not gonna get that from me.

Well, we never take we never take attendance at our club.

You don't You don't take your club seriously. Not almost. You have to have a head count. No. How do you know who showed up? When you send the newsletters. Nah. Yeah. We have no you have terrible documentation. The clubs are poorly run. I'm Gotta work on this.

Now that I can agree with. Yeah. Our clubs are poorly run, but it doesn't matter because we're there when we show up and you

have an agenda for when you give get togethers? No. No.

Well, this Halloween club, yeah. Every day. Every day. Well, that's what Emory says.

Yeah, I'm not sure. I'm not gonna do that. I'm not gonna commit. Likewise.

I'm gonna do it.

Doesn't she have homework? Isn't there something more important? She needs to be spending that two hours on? Probably. Yeah, okay.

Because she loves scary movies. I know. I'll also be a game.

I mean, if it was even like our expectation is one a week, I'd still say no, but I would feel like that's a more realistic expectation. Why?

Why would you still say no to once a week?

I just don't want to commit to scary.

You just don't like scary movies. They're just not my favorite genre. You don't like them. You don't like haunted houses. You don't like scary movies. Yeah, you're not a part of Halloween Club. And that's okay. We'll still love you. I like Halloween. Okay.

I like dressing up in costumes. I like going out and hanging out with friends and having a party. That's a good time. I like carving a pumpkin. I don't like cleaning it out, but I like the carving. process.

I like cleaning it out. I know. That's why we do one pumpkin. You clean it, I carve it. Yeah. Good team. I know. And that's great. It is great. Let's call it a day.

Do you want to be part of my pumpkin carving team club? No. Why?

We can just do it. We don't have to call it a club. We can just carve a pumpkin.

Hey, but also we uh we'll talk about this later. We'll save it for tomorrow. I'll say I'll run to write it down. We'll talk about it tomorrow. What? We found our Halloween costumes. You did.
