Welcome to our podcast. Today, we explore the causes of leprosy, a punishment from ancient times for specific sins, notably gossip and slander. The key to remembering these causes is the phrase "7:11." The seven sins leading to leprosy include evil speech, murder, false oaths, illicit intimacy, arrogance, robbery, and stinginess. The eleven additional causes expand on this, including idolatry, desecration of God’s name, and familial strife.
If a person afflicted cannot afford the full atonement offerings, a simpler list is available, allowing for a more accessible path to purification. This includes one male lamb as a guilt offering, a smaller measure of flour, and two pigeons. The kohen, representing kindness and compassion, performs the rituals on the eighth day, symbolizing renewal and purification. The process emphasizes that even in difficult times, atonement and healing are possible.
