Together, we'll unlock the methods, tactics and mindset shifts that set the top 1 % apart from the rest. I'm Ray Sclafani and I'll be your host. Today's episode is for leaders who are
planning or thinking about planning a summer retreat for their team. And let me be direct, this is not about golf outings, spa days or motivational speakers. This is about using your summer retreat to drive alignment and elevate your culture and accelerate the next chapter of growth for your firm. I often say firms that finish strong start strong. Summer retreats are a powerful way to get everybody clear and focused for how to finish the year strong and that will propel you into the upcoming year.
You see, when firms are in growth mode, the day-to-day can get kind of a blur, client meetings, teams, check-ins, operational updates, and even a bunch of firefighting at times. A summer retreat is a pause with purpose. It's a chance to step out of the whirlwind and ask bigger questions. Where are we going? What's changing? What's working? What needs to evolve? Retreats matter because they give your team a space to think, connect, and own the future.
But that only happens with intention and it starts with framing. Here's how I would consider framing your retreat. So it delivers real return on investment. Number one, set a theme, a clear theme, anchor the day with a meaningful topic, scaling with purpose. The next chapter winning as one team. These themes set the tone and bring clear focus into what the priority and purpose might be. Number two, make it collaborative.

Don't just present, facilitate. Engage the team in discussion, in exercises, in future-oriented problem solving. They should leave feeling heard and empowered, not lectured to. And third, connect strategy to role. Every team member should leave knowing that their work connects in a very specific way to the firm's vision and that clarity drives ownership, initiative, and trust.
This isn't about filling time, it's about creating inflection points. If you're building your agenda, here are a few high impact components. I'll introduce five for you. Number one, state of the firm, a transparent, optimistic look at where you are and where you're going led by the founder or CEO. Number two, client impact stories, showcase real ways your work has improved the lives of the clients you serve. It grounds the team and purpose. Three, vision alignment exercise.
Get the team discussing what the future looks like and what success means at the next level. Number four, team communication breakouts. Address friction points, role clarity, or collaboration blind spots in a constructive and facilitated way. And number five, next 90 days sprint planning. Make it actionable. End with each team or individual identifying one to two priorities that they will take forward immediately.
Let's be clear, this isn't just about culture building, it's about capacity building. When your team feels aligned, heard and equipped, they deliver better client outcomes, they solve problems faster, and they ultimately stay committed longer. And if you're developing next generation leaders or future owners, these moments are developmental accelerators. A summer retreat done well doesn't just boost morale, it builds momentum.
With each episode, we provide a few coaching questions. Today, there are three. Number one, if your team walked out of this retreat with one new belief or one new commitment, what would you want it to be? Number two, how can you use this retreat to shift from coordination to true collaboration? And number three, what conversations have you been avoiding that need to happen when the whole team is in the room? A well-run summer retreat
