What is Do Local Good?

Do Local Good is a podcast created by United Way of the Alberta Capital Region and the team of volunteers on the GenNEXT Cabinet. We feature stories and people from the Edmonton region to inform, inspire, and invite others to join us in building resilient and thriving communities. Listen in to learn about some of the local good already happening, and how you can be a part of the force for good!

[Alex] Hi! I’m Alex, part of United Way’s GenNEXT committee, and I’m here to announce that season two of Peace Out Poverty is launching next week!

[Alex] And for those of you who are new here, Peace Out Poverty is a podcast that discusses social issues in the Alberta Capital Region AND shows how community members can do local good!

[Alex] When we started this show last year, more than 180,000 people in our community lived in poverty. And since then, the number of folks struggling to make ends meet has only gone up.

[Alex] So on this show, we speak to experts about the many ways poverty can impact our wellbeing AND interview the people and organizations that are fighting for change.

[Alex] The GenNEXT Team and I have got a ton of things we want to talk about! Like how poverty disproportionately impacts women and gender diverse groups.

[Feven] Or the ongoing overdose crisis in Edmonton.

[Andrew] And how organizations in the region need in-kind product donations.

[Jenna] Or how Canada’s rising cost of living is negatively affecting people in poverty.

[Tokunbo] How racialized folks experience poverty at a higher rate than everyone else.

[Stephen] And how access to post-secondary education can help lift people out of poverty

[Alex] Yeah, things like that.

[Alex] Season two starts next Wednesday, on September 14th. Join us on this audio journey where we will learn together and organize as a community to say: PEACE OUT POVERTY!
