Own Your Impact

Your greatest insights don't come from speaking off the cuff—they emerge through the deliberate act of writing, where your mind can explore complexity and reveal layers of meaning that faster-paced communication simply cannot capture. When you force yourself to show up live or create quick video content, you're asking a pianist to express their musical genius through painting.

In this episode, I explore the Wisdom Writer archetype—thought leaders whose ideas develop most fully when they write them down, who naturally express nuance better in writing than speaking, and whose thoughtful voice creates deep connection on the page. If you find yourself mentally composing articles even when you're not writing, if you need a pen in your hand to think clearly, this episode will give you permission to build your platform around your natural strength.

Through examples from James Clear and other successful writers, I demonstrate why your written voice has magnetic power that creates lasting impact. I walk through why consistency and depth matter more than frequency, how to choose platforms that reinforce the written word, and why your careful exploration of ideas is exactly what our noisy world needs. This episode will shift how you approach content creation and help you stop apologizing for needing time to think things through.

IMPACT POINTS FROM THIS EPISODE:

Writing Isn't Just How You Communicate—It's How You Think – For true Wisdom Writers, your best insights emerge through the act of writing itself, not before. You need time to reflect and write because your ideas literally come out through your pen, revealing connections that don't happen in verbal processing.

Depth Creates Magnetism, Not Frequency – Your power isn't in posting five times a day; it's in creating written content that people save, share, and return to repeatedly. The world doesn't need more noise—it needs the clear signal that only comes from thoughtful, in-depth writing.

Your Natural Expression Mode Is Your Competitive Advantage – Stop trying to compete with quick video content or live streaming. When you align with platforms and formats that reinforce the written word, your careful exploration of ideas becomes the foundation for everything else you build.

Macy, welcome back to own your impact. I'm Macy Robison, and if this next description I'm about to share sounds a little bit like you, this is your episode. You are someone whose ideas develop most fully when you write them down, you've got to have a pen in your hand in order to feel like you're thinking clearly. You naturally express nuance and complexity better in writing than speaking, and you have a thoughtful, distinctive voice that creates deep connection when it's on the page, you might find yourself mentally composing articles even when you're not sitting down to write, your brain is constantly crafting and refining language. But here's what might be exhausting you. Everyone keeps telling you to get on video or show up live to build your platform, and it feels like performing instead of communicating in the way your mind actually works, or worse, getting on video, reading someone's words that aren't yours. If this sounds like you, but you want confirmation, take the thought leadership archetype quiz at Macy robison.com, forward slash quiz, and see if you are what I call a wisdom writer. So here's where your natural genius zone lives. If you're a wisdom writer, this is something I've discovered over years of working with writers. And I should mention, I am not primarily a writer in terms of archetype myself, nor have I had the opportunity to write a book yet, but I have learned to deeply respect this archetype because of the profound impact it creates in the way people express those ideas. So here's what energizes you as a wisdom writer, anytime you can just have deep written exploration, where you can follow an idea where it leads you, you love precise language that captures exactly what you mean, exactly how you would say it, and developing ideas through the writing process itself. Here's what's crucial to understand about this as an expression archetype, just like resonant orator, this isn't just how you communicate writing isn't just how you communicate best. It's how you think your best insights often emerge through the act of writing, not before. You need time to reflect. You need time to write. Your ideas come out through your pen. You excel at exploring complexity and presenting it with clarity. You can take readers on a journey through ideas in ways that feel natural and progressive, revealing layers of meaning that might be missed in faster paced communication. I was thinking about this the other day when I was struggling to work through a complex idea for a client. I was talking it through, which is my natural mode, but it wasn't clicking, so I wrote it down, and suddenly I could see when my writer clients say they need to write to think clearly, there's something about switching that up sometimes and and really experiencing the pace and depth of written exploration that allows for connections that don't always happen inside of verbal processing. Sometimes I'll go back and forth. I'll verbal process something. I'll say it into a recording. I'll write it down, make sure it makes sense to my eyes. I'll read it out loud again and go back and forth. But the people who I've worked with who are really, truly wisdom writers, they've just got to write it down. Now, what drains you is probably any type of off the cuff speaking without time to process or think it through. This isn't true of all wisdom writers, because anytime you're expressing thoughts and using words to do it, the wisdom writer, which we're talking about today, the resident orator and visual learning architect, all of those are expression modes of archetypes. Like, how do you most easily express yourself and communicate? And typically, because wisdom writer and resident orator both have words, you would think you could switch back and forth. But some of the true wisdom writers I've had a chance to work with, if they've scored really high on my archetype test, it does make them uncomfortable to just hop on video, especially off the cuff, or extemporary speaking without having a chance to process they care deeply about words they want to think it through, or some kind of surface level content that doesn't allow for depth and nuance, the kind of depth and nuance that Your mind really craves So showing up live, like just turning on Instagram Live and starting to talk if someone has given you that advice, and you've seen other people succeed with it, and you've felt resistant to it. That's why you crave that depth and ability to think things through that feels like performance and not communication in your natural mode, and you deeply care about communicating in your natural mode. So being forced to be on video, getting called on even sometimes, maybe in school, you didn't always want to raise your hand because you wanted a chance to think things through. But when you did have a chance to comment, man, amazing comments, because you'd written some notes. Had some depth of thinking, some nuance. That's where your genius. Lives in that depth, and it might feel like you're dumbing down your ideas to fit some faster paced formats, even though they're prevalent today. It doesn't mean you have to hop in and run the race next to everybody else, and it's that kind of misalignment that can kill momentum for wisdom writers, when your natural expression mode is written depth and you're forcing yourself to be on and and creating any kind of content that feels really fast pace, recording yourself, speaking off the cuff, showing up live, that's like asking a pianist to express their musical genius through painting. It's just not the same thing. Your power is not posting in five times a day. It's creating written content that people save, that people share, that people return to repeatedly. It doesn't mean you can't always produce it fast, but, man, it's through the words. So if you want to start getting some results expressing this natural archetype, here's where I want you to start. And this might feel like I'm giving you permission to do what already works, because, you know it works. Start writing. Begin consistent written content that showcases your thinking depth. You don't have to post it if you don't want to, but you do need to start creating it. You could give yourself a writing prompt, something that's been bothering you, react to something a client did. You can write a weekly article, a newsletter, a well crafted LinkedIn post. The key is consistency and depth, not frequency. I have a client that I'm working with right now that giving her that permission first that she realized that she was a wisdom writer, and how that has given her permission is what I should say. To go back to what she always loved, which was writing. It has been so cool to see the creativity that that is unlocked in what she's doing, what she's doing for her own personal brand, what she's doing for the business that she owns that sits alongside her personal brand. It's been awesome, and there's just something magical about leaning into even if it's just an experiment, the way you create transformation or the way you most natively express yourself. So here's what that could look like for you. You could start just writing a blog post, just put a LinkedIn article out there, or a LinkedIn post that lends itself to a little bit longer form. You can go on threads if you want to do something that's a little bit more fast paced, or something that chains several thoughts together. The platform, the format, isn't the thing. It's the writing. Focusing on an insight you really want to explore deeply, instead of covering everything you know, you can go deep. You don't have to go wide and pay attention. If it feels more energizing, keep going. Your written words are magnetizing. I've worked with a lot of authors over the years. One of my longest time clients, I have not made her take this archetype test yet, but I'm confident she's a wisdom writer, because it is the way she thinks. She journals. She has to get stuff down in writing. It's almost like examining her thoughts on paper, and it has been a magnetic part of her career to post her written words, whether it's in the form of a book, whether it's in short form on something like Twitter or threads, even on LinkedIn, those written words have so much gravitational pull and magnetism for her, you don't need to fix something that's not broken. If you love to write, just write so understanding that, strengthening that, leaning into that, that's going to strengthen your core resonance when it comes to expression. As far as your content, your transformational IP is going to just come out through written exploration, and it's going to get deeper with everything you write. Your central platform, the platforms you choose to be on. If you're a wisdom writer, please don't go on Tiktok unless, I mean, unless you want to. But we want to lean into especially if you're just starting to experiment with this, platforms that reinforce the written word. Sub stack would be a great place to start. But however you are building your your central platform, whether it's your website, building around your organized content, whether you're borrowing a platform like LinkedIn or sub stack, your newsletter should be a primary connection tool written lead magnets that demonstrate the depth of your thinking. Your platform should communicate the quality and depth of your written work. James clears website is a fantastic example of this. There is barely a picture on that site. If you go it is all about the words. He has long form articles. He has his 321, newsletter that goes out every Thursday. Even his social media. He wants to be famous for his ideas and his words, not for his face. He doesn't care if you know what he looks like. And if you look at his central platform, if you look at his social media that he uses, that is reflected in how he shows up, and it certainly hasn't hurt him millions and millions of books. That is really a great example of what leaning into your archetype looks like in real time, in a real example, everything builds from his strength as a writer who creates transformation through those carefully crafted insights.

So. So if you want to connect on other platforms, borrow other platforms, connect with new audiences, guest writing opportunities where you can reach new audiences. Book promotion, book book launches are a great way to reach new audiences and connect great writing spreads organically. So getting your written work in front of people, it will spread and even on podcast interviews. If you've written some ideas out ahead of time and have practiced expressing them and it sounds like your written voice even, that's going to work well. But don't try to force yourself into things that feel surface level. You might eventually add video, you might eventually add speaking, but start with your strength in writing, and don't feel pressured to write short, snappy content if your natural style is thoughtful and in depth, the world needs depth. We don't need more noise. We need a clear signal, and there is nothing more clear than the written word. So how do you make money from writing? Well, your primary business models are probably going to look like books that establish your authority and give you reach premium written content, like a sub stack newsletter or some sort of other subscription consulting that leverages your written expertise. I've worked with several authors over the years who write an outstanding book, and then we can construct, especially if they have digital learning architects near the top of their archetypes, we can construct a curriculum for them to walk people through, or create a train the trainer license model that will allow the content in their book to live on through other people teaching it. Courses based on your written material might do quite well if they're structured correctly. Give people the chance to learn at their own pace. When it comes to pricing, valuing the depth and the transformation that your writing creates, the word count isn't as big of a deal. The time investment isn't that big of a deal. I've read some really short books that were profoundly impactful, like The War of Art by Steven Prince field, your written work becomes a reference that people return to repeatedly, and that ongoing value should be reflected in how you price things beyond the cost of books, which you don't always have a ton of control over. But if you decide to do a sub stack, if you decide to do something that's subscription based, your words will help change people's minds. One of my clients has a Patreon that every month there is writing is just for the group in that Patreon handouts written, a lot of it's written based content. Some of it's video because it's just feels like it's you're talking to a friend. But a lot of it is based on words. Writing is the foundation everything needs to build from there. And again, that doesn't mean you have to write a book. Most wisdom writers end up writing books at some point, but I follow Gabrielle Blair design mom. I love her writing. I'm not sure. Again, I haven't made her take the archetype quiz, but her written word, the posts that she has done previously on Twitter that she's turned into books. She's now on threads. She re shares her writing on Instagram. She has done a lot. She has a paid sub stack. She's had one for years before everybody else was on sub stack. She came up in the age of magazines. So she writes articles all the time, and that has given her not only revenue, but reach, and has allowed her to do a lot of different things. In terms of an event that she runs every year, she does coaching. She does a lot of different things. She's a very creative person, but a lot of her platform is built around the words that she writes and sharing the words that other people write. There are lots and lots of ways to pull this together. So here's how I would love for you to start, start writing. It doesn't have to be something permanent yet, but just write a blog post. Just write a LinkedIn post. Focus on an insight you really want to explore deeply, instead of trying to cover every single thing you know. And like I said earlier, pay attention to how this energizes you, how it feels, compared to trying to make yourself more visible, or just flipping on the camera and answering a question live, and then ask yourself this, how can I build my thought leadership, my my impact around my natural strength in written expression, instead of thinking that nobody wants to hear it and fighting against it, because what I think you'll find is what a couple of my wisdom writer clients have found. It is the gateway to everything. It has unlocked so much possibility just by giving themselves permission to start writing and exploring what they really think through what they love to do anyway. It's been awesome to watch. So if you're a wisdom writer, and you also scored high in some of the other expression modes, understanding how those combinations work together can help you decide what you're going to do with the writing that you create in terms of how you build out your commercialization strategy, how you build out your connection strategy. Macy, it's all those things together that make that feel custom to you, and your core resonance and your voice. So if you want to know more about those combinations, if you've taken the quiz, I would love to have you come to my workshop beyond your primary archetype. I really think that understanding these archetypes can not only help you construct your resonant thought leadership system, but it's going to help you show up differently in sales. It's going to help you show up differently all across the things that you do when you understand who you are and how you want to show up. In this workshop, I'm going to share a deeper analysis beyond the quiz. When you take the quiz, you get a really, really robust understanding of what that top score is, but you'll also see you have several other scores in each of the 10 archetypes. It's a weighted quiz, and it weights everything differently, and it's really interesting to see how all of those combinations work together to make the unique being that is you. And previously, my clients and workshop attendees are the only ones that have had access to these expanded archetype analysis and I would love to have you have the opportunity to not only walk through it with me, but ask questions so that you can have the impact that you want to make. So would love to have you register at Macy robison.com, forward slash workshop. The first workshop is on August 6. There are several coming up. There are two more the week after in August. There's a couple scheduled in September already. This is the thing that people have had the most questions about. So I just wanted to lean in here and help people understand how this can transform your approach to building your platform. So I hope to see you there and wisdom writer, what I want you to remember your written voice has the ability to create lasting impact and deeper connection. Stop trying to be someone you're not, and start building from the strength that already energizes you and see what happens you.
