What is Best Damn EDC?

This is the Best Damn EDC Podcast. Mostly, you'll get audio-only episodes of Deep Cuts here with the occasional interview.

Taylor:

One guy said he tuned out of the channel because normal people don't everyday carry knives that expensive. KnifeCenter's YouTube channel was hacked and subsequently nuked, and I have finally launched my second knife design. Maybe. Welcome to DeepCuts, cuts where the knives are sharp, the comments are sharper, and sometimes the Internet just catches fire. Let's do the damn thing.

Taylor:

Alright. First up, because you guys always ask, what's in my pockets? Sixty seconds on the clock. We're gonna get it done in that time or less. First up, we have the Chris Reeve Insingo or the Inkosi Insingo like I had a few weeks ago, and this time I have a Nice Guy Machine Company clip on it.

Taylor:

Thanks, Archie. We also have, same as always, the SOG Powerpoint. We mixed up the pin too. This is a tactile bolt action slim best MEDC zero feud three way collaboration. Same wallet though.

Taylor:

Rustic heirloom hitchhiker, the honeycomb edition. And I also have a new flashlight in my pocket, the bronze Okluma DC zero, and I think that's it. That's it. That's that's all of it. Oh, sorry.

Taylor:

Almost forgot. Switched up the watch for you too. Greg Stevens Design Explorer on the wrist today. Love this watch, and I don't wear it nearly enough. Alright.

Taylor:

That's what's in my pockets. Alright. This next segment, which is always a comment from one of you guys here on YouTube, we're gonna call this one missed the point. Alright. So this comment comes from steven h dot three two nine seven and he said, no wonder I tuned this channel out.

Taylor:

Everyday people don't EDC that price of knife. I spent $120 on my pair two back in the day, and I'd rather have three more than that thing. He is commenting in response to Ricky's Dixon video, which we've mentioned a few times here. This knife right here, which is $625. For the record.

Taylor:

Ricky did say it was $6.75 in the video, but it's $6.25. Doesn't really matter. It's over $600. It is a lot of money to spend on just one knife. But I'm sorry you tuned out, Steven.

Taylor:

I'm glad you're back. Maybe not. I don't know. I don't really care if you're here or not. The point is not everybody has to carry a $600 knife.

Taylor:

Also, not everybody wants to carry a $20 knife from Walmart. Everybody wants something a little bit different. If you want an American made knife, you're never really gonna get out for much cheaper than what you have there, a hundred and $20 if you're lucky. If you're lucky. Is the Para two American made?

Taylor:

That might be that I think that one is a a Taiwan knife. I'm pretty sure. You'll be hard pressed to find something made in America for anywhere close to a hundred and $20 in a folder. I think the closest you'll probably come is from, like, Three Rivers Manufacturing or something, and they're closer to $200, and they're even going up too. So the point is not really about how much the knife costs or where it's made.

Taylor:

It's about what you like. And I'm not trying to be like a fence writer here. I'm also not, like, totally upset about your sour grapes about the Dixon. It's fine if you don't wanna spend 600 and some dollars on a knife. I don't expect everybody who watches the video to buy a $600 knife and carry every day.

Taylor:

That's not what it's about. What it's about for me is showing you guys the cool stuff that exists. If I only ever showed you budget knives, it would be pretty boring. There's so much overlap and same same in that budget category that it would just be very monotonous and boring for me. I like really cool things.

Taylor:

I like gear. Sometimes I like very cheap gear. The SOG power point that I carry, $50 $35 multi tool, 35 to 50. The flashlight I carry is like a $30.40 dollar flashlight. It's not super expensive.

Taylor:

Yeah. The one I have in my pocket today, $400. But the point is that here on the channel, we are trying to show you things. We wanna show you what's cool. And if we only focus on one thing, that doesn't give you the variety.

Taylor:

It doesn't show you the entire market. For me, the the the comparison that I always like to make is with car YouTube. If you watched a car YouTuber who only reviewed, like, I don't know, Fiats and Honda Civics and, you know, $20,000 cars, it would be kind of boring. It's useful to people looking to buy those. Sure.

Taylor:

But I prefer to watch a car YouTuber who's reviewing a Lamborghini or an Audi r eight or something truly exotic and crazy, a Hennessy Raptor. Right? A Velociraptor. If I'm only watching a car YouTuber who is only reviewing budget cars, I'm not watching it for the entertainment value. I'm watching it just for information, which I understand.

Taylor:

As a buyer, maybe you understand that as well, and that's what you're looking for. But for me, it is far more interesting to have a variety. Somebody who can make the videos about those budget knives and then somebody who can also make videos about a $625 knife or even more expensive, like an 870 some dollar knife that Ricky is gonna be talking about very soon on the channel that is also very sweet. The point is that it's not just about what you would buy, but just what's out there, what people are doing, what people are making. These people are making really cool knives, and they're giving Americans jobs.

Taylor:

So there's just two pieces of that puzzle, and you're completely ignoring one whole side of the equation. So all that is to say, we make videos about budget knives. We make videos about expensive knives. We like it all. So sorry that you feel that just because we've talked about an expensive knife here and there, you can't subscribe.

Taylor:

But we're not gonna just make one type of video. I can't do that. I don't think Ricky wants to do that. I think we like variety, and I would hope you like variety too. So that's what I have to say about that.

Taylor:

Really quickly, Ricky wanted me to to mention that the videos he's making, which were like extensions of his Realium entries that he started with on Instagram, are stories about the makers, not just the knife itself, but behind the knife, the man behind the knife, the process behind the knife, what went into this, the story that got that person to this point in their knife making career. So there's a lot more to it than just like, look at this shiny new object. There's stories to be told, and that's that's something that Ricky really likes is the history, the stories, the things behind it. I enjoy looking for, you know, things that we haven't covered and finding different places and ways that we can talk about this gear. Because if we talk about just every single new knife that comes across the table, I'm gonna be checked out about, like, three videos.

Taylor:

And I just want variety. So I like to provide that variety, and it's very easy for people on the other side to cherry pick because we did one thing they didn't like. You know what? I kinda like I kinda like that segment where I can, like, get fired up a little bit about a comment. Like, typing that out as a reply on YouTube would be very petty, but it is, like, cathartic as hell to do this segment here on the channel.

Taylor:

I'm not here to start a fight. I don't want to start fights with you guys, but I would like to broaden the conversation. It's like we're so far removed from people being able to just debate and have different opinions about things, and I like being able to do this in an open forum and then hear back from you guys on this topic. Alright. Next up is the community carry of the week.

Taylor:

If you guys would like to submit and be featured here, you can do that by tagging us on Instagram at e d c dot weekly. That's a new account made specifically for this. Also, because I had some questions, maybe more concern from people who don't use social media, if you would like to submit, I have reopened the Google form. So it is the same web address, edcw.co. Go there and you could submit and be featured here.

Taylor:

And like I said last week, if you are featured, you get to choose between a best m e d c hat or a t shirt. We'll be in touch with Viking Gear e d c after this. But what we have in this photo, there's a very specific reason I chose this photo. There's only three pieces of gear. He does list out the rest of his carry, but we have a Tikal Piranha, which is an awesome tiny fixed blade.

Taylor:

We have a SOG power pipe, and then we have an RZE super compressor watch. I actually almost wore my RZE super compressor today, but I it didn't have a bracelet on it, I was in a hurry. So Fabian also says, not pictured, but always with me. We have a Cary Commission rustic heirloom hitchhiker in cognac. He also has AirPods, an iPhone 14 Pro, and then he has keys, a Griffin adventure tool, and a Glow Rhino Tritium fob.

Taylor:

And then finally, a Jeremy Cyrus Zippo v three occasionally. Fabian says, all three of these items are special to me. My watch was a gift to myself after working my first higher paying job. The Tea Kel was a birthday gift to me, and it is such an amazing knife. I started carrying fixed blades more often, and this is perfect to me.

Taylor:

As for the SOG, I make these clips myself. I had way too much time on my hands and really disliked the way the tool sat in my pocket, and I just wanted something better. Although I've started selling some of the clips online, I do not intend for this to be used as an advertisement. I simply love the community and what the EDC weekly stands for. He's also looking for something.

Taylor:

He says, he's looking for a different style watch, a little more dressy, maybe leather or fabric band around the same price point as the RZE watches. I don't even know what the RZE super compressor goes for. Is it, $3.50?

Rikki:

I would assume so.

Taylor:

Probably something in there. 4. I mean, there's a there's a billion Seikos in that price range. If you can find an Alpinist I think an Alpinist is really good. There's also a Seiko Passage.

Taylor:

I don't know what a Passage goes for, but it is very classy. Seiko Passage, $3.50. Right there. But there I feel like there is, like, an older discontinued version that is highly sought after that is a lot more expensive, but it's a dress watch. That's the best thing I can tell you.

Taylor:

The Seiko Versace is probably the classiest dress watch for about $3.50 that isn't a micro brand. I'm sure there are a million micro brands that I don't know about, but that's the one I would recommend. And if you wanna go a different route, maybe an Orient. Orient has a lot of really dressy watches. Alright.

Taylor:

Next week, what we will be looking for for this community carry of the week is your best hard use gear. Not just hard use gear that has been used. I wanna see used and abused, like, truly used, well loved carries. So, again, tag EDC Weekly on Instagram. It's EDC.weekly over on Instagram or go to EDCW.co and submit there.

Taylor:

Finally, we're to the part where we need to thank our channel sponsors, the people who make this all possible. First, we have Work Sharp. They make really great sharpeners. They also have some knives that are coming out of blade show. Keep your eyes peeled for those.

Taylor:

But this is your reminder to use your shit and sharpen your knives. Thank you to Workshop for being a channel sponsor. Also, we'd like to thank Big Idea Design. They've been sponsoring for a very long time. Just big supporters of what we do here, and we love those guys.

Taylor:

They make really nice pins for EDC. Everything from brass and copper, now bronze, titanium, zirconium if you wanna get a little fancy, and they have tons of titanium pocket tools and now knives. Go check out everything they have to offer at the link down below. And if you use coupon code carry on, you'll get 10% off at checkout. And finally, we wanna thank Whatnot.

Taylor:

Whatnot is a live streaming platform where you can go buy all sorts of stuff. They have Pokemon cards and vintage clothing, all kinds of stuff. But also, of course, knives, and we will be going live today, May 23 at 4PM eastern time, and we have some special stuff. We're gonna be doing a giveaway, a few giveaways, actually, and we'll have some of my Topo Zippos. Maybe the last few of these carry commission lookouts in Topo.

Taylor:

Maybe. And maybe some other fun stuff. Go check it out. There's a link down below, and if you sign up using my link, you get $15 towards your first purchase. Alright.

Taylor:

Now on to the on my radar. Obviously, we should just start with this one. My knife came out yesterday. We have the tactile Red Hawk. It is my second knife design.

Taylor:

They are available in three different color ways over at tactile. You have an all black, black cerakote with black micarta. You have a stonewash with green micarta, and then you have a green cerakote with natural micarta. Those are all available at tactile knife. And then we have a Carry Commission exclusive.

Taylor:

It is this one right here, the one I've been carrying for months now, which is an FDE blade and black micarta, if they're still available by the time this video goes live. I I imagine the Carry Commission ones are probably gone, tactile. I don't know. If you miss it, if they're not available when you're watching this, if they are all sold out, there will be some at Blade Show, so I'm told. Secondly, if you went to YouTube sometime this week and you were looking for KnifeCenter and it just happened to be gone, that is because KnifeCenter was hacked and then subsequently taken down.

Taylor:

The channel was removed. As of right now, they are working to get their channel reinstated. I don't know what the status of that is now. As of this morning, it was not available. By the time this video airs, hopefully, they have it sorted out.

Taylor:

But YouTube is notorious for taking its time on matters like this. So, hopefully, they can get that reinstated very quickly. And all I have to say about that is that it always makes me terrified. I use as good a security as I can, two factor authentication, and try to use different passwords and all sorts of stuff, and it can still happen to other people. KnifeCenter said they were using two factor authentication.

Taylor:

Don't know how that happened, but they got hacked and their channel's gone. And that terrifies me every single day. I hope you guys can get that sorted out quickly. This one's like a humbling moment. I don't know.

Taylor:

I'm just gonna be candid with you guys. I got got. And this one's on my radar because, I don't know, I just gotta show you that, like, yeah, Facebook marketing and ads work on me too, even though I make Facebook ads sometimes. This thing popped up on my feed in, like, December. This is called the Metmo Piston, and it's just a pneumatic brass fidget thing.

Taylor:

It just just that's that's it. That's it. I paid, like, a hundred dollars for this thing, and I I genuinely don't know why. I remember buying it. I don't know why I bought it.

Taylor:

This is all it does. You just, like, is that and then you can, like I don't know why I'm telling you this. I mean, is it cool? Kind of. But the coolness wears off after, like, I don't know, five minutes.

Taylor:

I will admit this is this is pretty satisfying. You'd, like, untwist the bottom here. That's pretty satisfying. But, like, it took that long for this to this arrived today, which today is Tuesday, May, whatever. Five months and a hundred dollars, and I have this thing.

Taylor:

Ricky loves it. Ricky Ricky loves that I bought this and I don't know why. Alright. Now, on to the giveaway. Last week, we announced we were giving away this right here, a Benchmade five three five, which is the aluminum with the burgundy rich light.

Taylor:

The winner from last week's giveaway is Tristan Emerson. We've already contacted him. I don't think we've heard from him, but congratulations, Tristan. If you would like to win the next knife, which is gonna be this right here, this is a carry commission exclusive Alu Bronze Pro Tech Malibu. All you have to do is already be signed up for the newsletter.

Taylor:

I told you guys, I've been telling you for weeks, sign up for the newsletter and you can win stuff. Right? So the instructions for how to enter this giveaway are in the email from this week. If you've not signed up, you missed the boat. There's no way to get that email.

Taylor:

You'll have to sign up and get in on the next giveaway. I hope that makes sense. In short, if you would like to win this knife right here, go see if you have the EDC weekly from today. The instructions are in there. Okay.

Taylor:

So we've been doing games every week so far with the deep cuts. I felt like we needed to mix it up a little bit. So we're still gonna do games, but this is like Taylor versus Ricky. This is what we're gonna call up the ante. And this week, Ricky had an idea.

Taylor:

What's your idea, Ricky?

Rikki:

Taylor thinks of himself as a fancy guy with his little fire starter here, so I told

Taylor:

him got fancy? Do I think I'm fancy?

Rikki:

He thinks he's a fancy guy. He's he's over here trying to start fires everywhere he goes now. So I told him, what if I challenged him to a fire starting competition? He gets to use his Wazoo Viking Spark. I get to use a Zippo.

Rikki:

Now my Zippo is in my backpack in my little editing den there. So we're both gonna start with our hands on the table. When I say go or he says go, he needs to start a fire using his Wazoo Viking Spark. I have to run over to my backpack, get my lighter, and set this little piece of Tinder? Tinder on fire.

Rikki:

Whoever does it first wins.

Taylor:

We are gonna start right here with their hands on the table. I'm gonna start try to start a fire with my Viking Spark just around my neck. Ricky is gonna have to go get his lighter and come back, and whoever starts the fire first wins. If Ricky wins, you guys, one of you, will win a Wazi Viking spark. If I win, nobody gets anything yet.

Taylor:

Ready. No. I got a lot more to, like you just gotta unzip some stuff. I gotta I can win. I'm gonna win.

Taylor:

Easy. Easy money.

Rikki:

Three, two, one.

Taylor:

Lightning speed. Lightning speed. Oh, god. I fumbled the bag. I fumbled the Yeah.

Taylor:

I fumbled it.

Rikki:

Done. Fumbled. You're still gonna like the wire. There you go.

Taylor:

Oh. I know why I fumbled it. It was so easy, but I, like, kept fumbling it. Was just in too much of a hurry. Oh.

Taylor:

Alright. Well, congrats to somebody. They're getting a Wazyu Vikings part.

Rikki:

Doing it for you guys. Next up is gonna give a CRK eventually. We'll get there. Hey. Good game.

Rikki:

Good game.

Taylor:

I'm not shaking your hand.

Rikki:

Good game, sir. Good game. You took a while.

Taylor:

Dude, I could have easily done that, and I just fumbled, like, five times. I'm so disappointed in myself.

Rikki:

Hey. I gave you I honestly, I didn't even know in which pocket that lighter was in.

Taylor:

Oh, I had to open a pocket I

Rikki:

gave you I gave you so much time. Hey, all that means is you get to practice starting fires now.

Taylor:

I I should have been able to do it quickly, a la just this, this, and then go, and I just kept I didn't grab it like this Oh, strike and I kept dropping it.

Rikki:

Yeah. You woulda you woulda had it, man. Pause it by, you can swear. You're welcome. Damn it.

Rikki:

Don't let don't say don't say I never do anything for you guys. You're welcome.

Taylor:

Ricky's an asshole. Well, anyway, that is it for the deep cuts this week. Be sure to subscribe to the newsletter if you would like to win this very, very nice knife. Don't forget, we're also gonna be live on Whatnot tonight at 4PM. Don't miss that.

Taylor:

And also, there is an audio only podcast, which is just this in audio only form so you can listen to my beautiful voice while you fall asleep or on your way to work, whatever or not. I don't care. Also, Blade Show is coming up very soon. We should have a deep cuts before Blade Show, but there will definitely be a Blade show, like, post show for sure. So stay tuned for all of the blade show goodness.

Taylor:

We will see you guys next week in deep cuts and probably before then. But until then, carry on.
