January 12 - 18, 2026: A piece of chicken, a piece of broccoli, a corn tortilla, and one other thing

What is FOOD LOG?

What I ate last week

EPISODE 46
UPDATES
My mom told me this week that I should go on shark tank; so I am not sure if she’s ever seen it
H&H
I have two cabbages that are taking up my entire fridge and it’s ruining my life; so big they are blocking out the sun aka the fridge light so all of the other food is shrouded in darkness
Fosters market health code violations; dead bugs in pans and nobody was washing their hands
The restaurant was in violation of 17 standards. Violations included not observing “any handwashing during the entire inspection,” plus finding a slicer with food debris, household pesticide in the cabinet, “dead winged insects stuck to some metal pans” and “over half a dozen pest traps in the storage room.”
18” sinkhole caused the main road outside my office to shut down and the launching of multiple helicopters to monitor the giant chasm and imminent swallowing of the city
Speaking of holes, no brunswick stew this year
Brian sent me the yelp page for our local Olive Garden where his mom had a margarita spilled on her. First mistake was ordering a margarita at Olive Garden. George S: “the marinara is now spicy. Be careful”
Was considering doing a long weekend somewhere close, like Savannah, but I’m unsure if it’s worth a food trip.
Elizabeth’s Ice cream & Deli in Estill, SC: “Worst place in the world. Waited an hour for a club sandwich”
Bobops Famous Chicken: 3.6 Stars: “This is a marathon gas station that sells fried chicken”.

Let’s be real: This is canned tuna. THE NICE THING ABOUT PICKLED BANANA PEPPERS IS THAT THEY ARE GREAT EVEN IF THEY ARE FOOD LION STORE BRAND

Why are all these babies GENDERED
Intensively flavored so I don’t gorge on them

January 14, 2026 (Wednesday)

7am: Leftover coffee with half & half and a bowl of bran flakes with milk.

11am: Leftover tuna salad and shredded romaine with two small slices of ciabatta, and a cup of coffee with half & half at the office.

2pm: A strawberry grain bar.

IF I WERE BLINDFOLDED AND YOU DIDN’T TELL ME WHAT FLAVOR IT WAS, IT REALLY COULD BE EITHER THE APPLE CINNAMON OR STRAWBERRY; ACTUALLY THEY ARE PROBABLY THE SAME FLAVOR WITH DIFFERENT PACKAGING

Cake room: Recipe for Wonton Soup from a NYT Cooking Page-a-day Calendar

Ingredients:
Salt
2 quarts chicken stock, preferably homemade
12 baby bok choy, cut in halves or quarters lengthwise
8 bunches fresh wonton noodles (optional)
20 fresh or unthawed frozen wontons
1 scallion, thinly sliced
Soy sauce, red vinegar, chile oil, or chile crisp for serving

Preparation:
Blanch bok choy and cook noodles and wontons
Divide into serving bowls
Top with warmed stock and toppings

Homemade Stock
Combine 8oz chicken wings, 8oz ground pork, 3 slices of ginger, 2 cut-up scallions and 7c water in large pot. Add ounce of dried Chinese mushrooms or dried scallops and a whole star anise if you have them. Bring to boil and then maintain a simmer for 35 min, skimming foam. Strain, discard solids and season stock to taste.

6pm: Ground pork, tofu, onion, and broccoli with garlic, chilies, and cumin over jasmine rice, made at home.

Used Korean soy sauce - too salty
Fried pork, added garlic, chinese crushed chilies, whole dried chilies, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, then when sticking add onion, then broccoli and boiled tofu. Add sugar/msg/chicken bouillon powder/garlic powder and finish with a little bit of soy.

8pm: Rustic Bakery Ginger Baby cookies.

January 15, 2026 (Thursday)

9am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, made at home.

11am: Graza potato chip crumbs.

1pm: A three egg omelette with Kerrygold reserve cheddar and black pepper, made at home.

The Kerrygold was wet when I took it out of the package. I keep meaning to buy wax paper to store my cheese.

2:30pm: Tortilla chips and salsa.

NATURE’S PROMISE BRAND – THIS BRAND SUCKS

6pm: Fusilli with pancetta, savoy cabbage, garlic, onion, and cream, made at home.

HER WINE is ok for being a wine that is basically called “wine for women”

JUST STARTED A 5LB BACK OF EVEN KEEL, NEED A NEW COFFEE BECAUSE COUNTER CULTURE IS PROVING TO NOT BE GREAT, ESPECIALLY FOR THE PRICE POINT; THIS WAS MADE ALL THE MORE APPARENT WHEN DRINKING IT NEXT TO METRIC COFFEE

WHAT TO DO WITH A SAVOY CABBAGE?
1 napa and 1 savoy cabbage, on the verge of bolting, from NCSU
Per wikipedia: white wine, apples, spices, horseradish, meat
Peak cabbage season in northern hemisphere is Nov-Apr
I typically use potatoes, but mine are spent
Arthur Schwartz
Cabbage and potato with pancetta and hot pepper from Naples / Basilicata
Cube pancetta and saute with olive oil in 4QT pot until brown and rendered
Add a pound of ½” sliced potatoes and cook in the fat; add salt and chili flakes
Cut 3LB cabbage into squares, core removed, and rinse, and add as much cabbage to the pot as fits, and add a teaspoon of salt
Cover pot and cook on low, turning the mixture every so often, for about 40 minutes

Sauerkraut? Probably time to get rid of my giant jar of 2-year-old sauerkraut
SAVOY PASTA (Like Arthur’s recipe but subbing potatoes with pasta)
Half of a large savoy cabbage, cut into 1” strips
A quarter of an onion, sliced
4 cloves of garlic, smashed and sliced
4 ounces of pancetta
3 chiltepin peppers
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon butter
¼ cup Her Sauvignon Blanc
¼ cup heavy cream
⅔ pound of fusilli
1 can of beans (optional)
Parmesan (optional)

7:30pm: Rustic Bakery Ginger Baby Cookies.

January 16, 2026 (Friday)

7am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, made at home, and a bowl of bran flakes.

9am: A cup of coffee with half & half at the office.

Cake room: NYT Cooking Page-a-Day calendar recipes for Citrus Skillet Shrimp With Shallots and Jalapenos, Frijoles Borrachos, and Black Sesame Shortbread. Coworker was eating a large spread of small pretzels, salami, cheese, Ritz crackers, grape tomatoes, and strawberries like in Bread and Jam for Frances

11am: Leftover ground pork and tofu with broccoli over rice.

4pm: A sugar-free lemon lime Jello and a handful of tortilla chips.

6pm: Soppressata, calabrese, mixed greens, mayonnaise, onion, pickled banana peppers on olive oil toasted focaccia, made at home.

7pm: A large scoop of tiramisu from Whole Foods.

Brian’s dad’s beach trip: Carolina Ale House, Cici’s Pizza, sock shopping for an undisclosed amount of socks

January 17, 2026 (Saturday)

8am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, made at home.

10am: Leftover ground pork and tofu over rice with a steamed egg and S&B chili crisp, made at home.

1:30pm: Kalona French onion dip and Whole Foods rippled potato chips.

JUST OK - organic dehydrated spinach? You could use this as regular sour cream and nobody would know that it’s French onion dip. Broken ass chips

5pm: Half of a pork summer roll and roasted duck with sweet dipping sauce at Saigon Pho in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Giant empty aquarium with huge flat screen TV above it (turned off) could put it inside the aquarium and play videos of fish

Student pot luck with three chips and salsas and one cereal and milk

6:30pm: A spicy chicken sandwich and cheesy bites from a Popeye’s in Raleigh.

Cheesy bites were ok. Too pizza flavored and soft. Often popeye’s chicken is too oily.

7pm: Half of a Garden durian cream wafer.

Durian tasted like gasoline, tomato sauce, deep umami, cheese, mushroom, alcohol; a flavor that lingers in the back of your throat

January 18, 2026 (Sunday)

10am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, North Country hickory smoked bacon, two sunny eggs, and half of a slice of focaccia toasted in bacon fat, made at home.

This bacon was whack; oddly rubbery before cooking. I think I might be sick. When I’m sick eggs taste bad and my appetite is generally low and I barely ate this.

1pm: Hot chocolate with whipped cream, made at home.
