Top Apple headlines from January 19, 2023.
Apple is more than just the iPhone manufacturer. This $2 trillion company's decisions impact many facets of technology, financials, and everyday life. When the company is rumored to be getting into something new, the entire world pays attention. And since 1997, AppleInsider has been covering this fascinating electronics maker from every possible angle. From details of the next-generation iPhone and MacBook to key indicators expected to drive the company’s stock price, AppleInsider Daily has you completely covered on a daily basis.
Welcome to the AppleInsider Daily for Thursday, January 19, 2023.
The MacBook Air was one of the first Macs to get the M1 Apple Silicon processor, then one of the first to get the M2 -- and now rumors say it will be first to M3, as well. It's a sketchy report from Digitimes, but the claim is that we'll see a 3-nanometer M3 in the MacBook Air by the end of this year.
It is true that Apple is buying up all of manufacturer TSMC's 3-nanometer supply, but TSMC is only weeks into making them. Plus Macs with the M2 Pro have just come out, leaving expectations of an M2 Ultra to come before we even get more concrete rumors of an M3.
You can't get more concrete than Apple publicly committing to a date, but sometimes you can't even trust that. As the 2022 deadline for Apple Music Classical falls ever further behind us, Apple still hasn't released the promised new service, nor commented on its delay.
However, the latest beta for iOS 16.3 -- expected to be released to users next week -- does contain code for the service. The code has been updated since the last beta, too, so Apple is definitely working on this much-awaited service.
And speaking of waiting, all Apple devices did see production delays in 2022, but over the year, Apple sold seven million Macs -- and did so despite the global market for computers dropping.
In quarter four of 2022, PC shipments -- including the Mac -- fell 27.8%, according to Counterpoint Research. That means 65.2 million PCs were sold in the fourth quarter, which in total is a 15% decline year over year. Taken just by itself, though, Apple saw a decline of just 3% in the same period.
While computer sales are slowing, Apple is now very far from being solely a computer company. A new report says that Apple is turning its attention back to the smart home, and may follow up its relaunched HomePod with a smart tablet that specifically controls HomeKit devices.
Apple isn't neglecting the iPhone, though, as that same iOS 16.3 beta that contains hidden code for Apple Music Classical, also includes a fix for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Some users were finding either one or very many horizontal yellow lines appearing on their screen when they started up their phones.
Apple says that's now fixed, and again the iOS 16.3 release is expected next week.
So that's the iOS 16 update next week, a rumored M3 MacBook Air by the end of 2023, and Apple Music Classical... some day.
