Course offerings leaked on Fizz ft. Chris Bao — Tuesday, March 26th

For the Daily Princetonian, I’m Twyla Colburn. You’re listening to Daybreak.

Today, we cover a leak of Fall 2024 course offerings on Fizz, a local movement to increase fentanyl overdose awareness, and the passage of a UN Security Council resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

It’s Tuesday, March 26th.

Yesterday morning, an anonymous user on the social media app Fizz posted a file they claimed contained the course offerings for Fall 2024, three days before the course offerings are set to be officially released. I sat down with associate news editor Chris Bao to learn more.

In local news, The Partnership for a Drug Free New Jersey has taken steps to increase awareness of fentanyl overdose as many schools and universities go on spring break this week. New Jersey law officials have found that fentanyl is in around 80% of all street drugs. Local organizations, such as the Camden County Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, are working with schools, such as Voorhees Middle School, this week to better educate students on the dangers of drug use. Additionally, in a press release this past January, New Jersey Human Services announced that the Naloxone365 initiative has administered 132,000 doses since the initiative’s beginning in January 2023. The initiative provides the opioid overdose medication Naloxone, often known by brand name Narcan, for free to anyone who requests it through participating New Jersey pharmacies and continues to be in effect as a resource for New Jersey. At the University, McCosh Health Center has Narcan, as well as fentanyl test strips, available for students 24/7.

In international news, the UN Security Council passed a resolution yesterday calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the remainder of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and for the immediate release of hostages seized in the October 7th attack on southern Israel. After repeatedly vetoing Security Council resolutions pressuring Israel for a ceasefire, the US chose to abstain from voting on the current resolution rather than block it. Following the US’s decision not to veto the resolution, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that they will not be sending a previously-planned delegation to Washington. The delegation was requested by President Biden to discuss alternatives to a ground invasion of Rafah. In a walkout on February 12th, pro-Palestine Princeton students with the organization Students for Justice in Palestine reiterated demands for an immediate ceasefire, with one student speaker saying [quote] “a call for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine is just the first step to justice.”

Today, you can expect cloudy skies, with a high of 50 and a low of 33 degrees fahrenheit.

That’s all for Daybreak today.
