OK Solberg:

I wanna again welcome you to the 04:05 coffee break. Get your cup of coffee, glass iced tea, bottle of water. Let's see what's happening. Spring wheat, $6.08 a bushel. 550 pound steer cap, $3.93 a pound, a butcher hog in Omaha, 61¢ a pound, and a 100 pound fat lamb in Billings is worth $2.27 a pound.

OK Solberg:

But guys, there's more, much more. Okay. Today is June 13. Tomorrow is June 14. In the words of my old friend and classmate Dean Hassler, keen sense of the obvious, Orvin keen sense of the obvious.

OK Solberg:

Yet nonetheless, now that I've said it, the stage has been set. Today, June 13, is Jimmy Murdoch's birthday. Happy birthday, Jimmy. Tomorrow is June 14, and it's also Saturday, so I won't have a four zero five episode. Therefore, I have to commemorate Flag Day a day early, which is today.

OK Solberg:

Now, did you also realize that June 14 is the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Army in The United States Of America? Yes. Two hundred and fifty years to the day the army was established. Listen. US Army's birthday.

OK Solberg:

The United States Army was established on 06/14/1775 when the Continental Congress authorized the enlistment of riflemen to serve the United Colonies. Two years later, Flag Day. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official American flag on June 14, two years later, which would make it 1777 by the second Continental Congress. But notice that both happenings were on June 14. On 06/14/1885, Wisconsin school teacher Bernard Sigrid originated the idea for an annual observance to be celebrated across the country.

OK Solberg:

He lobbied year after year in an attempt to have an official national flag day established by the United States government. Then in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson declared June 14 as flag day. In 1937, Pennsylvania was the state to observe the day as a legal holiday. It wasn't until 08/03/1949 that Congress designated June 14 as National Flag Day, which is celebrated in relationship with the US Army's birthday. Yes.

OK Solberg:

Celebrated with the US Army's birthday. Now bring it a little closer to home. I went to the United States Post Office right here in Malta, Montana, 59538, and I purchased three sheets of stamps. Believe it or not, the Navy, the Marine Corps, and the Army are all celebrating 250 years, this year. So I have one sheet of army forever stamps, one sheet of navy forever stamps, and one sheet of the marine corps forever stamps.

OK Solberg:

The army was established on, as you know, 06/14/1775, the Navy on 10/13/1775, the Marine Corps on 11/10/1775. So today is June 13. June 13. After you call Jimmy Murdoch on the phone to wish him a happy birthday, then go down to the post office and get some stamps to celebrate tomorrow, July 14. I'll close with a bible verse and then I'm gonna call Jimmy.

OK Solberg:

Listen. All you peoples of the world and you who are living on the earth, when a flag is lifted up on the mountains, give attention, and when the horn is sounded, give ear. Isaiah 18 verse three. The weekend's near. Go out and enjoy.

OK Solberg:

So until next time, as you go out there, remember now, don't be bitter.
