Good morning and
welcome to Morning Syria.
Okay, good morning and welcome to Monday.
It's a brand new week,
it's a brand new year
and we are back to
full episodes this week
and the coffee's working so that's good
and on top of it all, today
is National Whipped Cream Day
which is permission to make
life a little sweeter today
especially if it's just on top
of something somewhat ordinary.
Well, now the essential
vitamins in your morning cereal.
Today's quote is from
birthday boy Bradley Cooper
who once said, quote,
"The thing that I've learned
"is that I don't want to do things
"that I'm not passionate about."
End quote.
Now, that is a great
reminder that energy,
it follows your interests
and forcing yourself
into things that don't fit,
well, it usually costs
more than it gives you.
All right, well, you have
heard more than enough from me.
Let's pour in some of the
let them theory by Mel Robbins
in today's book review.
Today we are talking
about why change is so hard.
Remember that we left
off there last year?
Well, here's truth number one,
adults only change when they feel like it
and Robbins makes this
point very clearly and honestly
saying, quote, "You cannot
force another adult to change.
"Adults only change when they decide to."
End quote.
And if we're being
honest, that applies to us too.
Right, sounds familiar.
No amount of lectures, no
deadlines or resolutions
or any of those guilt trips,
none of that actually works
unless that desire to
change comes from inside of us.
Now, Mel explains that most people,
they waste enormous amounts of energy
trying to manage
other people's behaviors.
Partners, coworkers, family,
instead of recognizing what's real.
Quote, "When you stop
trying to control what you can't,
"you finally have
energy for what you can."
End quote.
And that's the foundation of
the let them mindset, right?
Robbins also points out here that
pressure creates resistance.
The harder we push
change in ourselves or others,
the more the nervous
system it pushes back.
That's why willpower, it fades
and habits snap back to old habits.
Change isn't about
force, it's about readiness.
Mel writes, quote,
"Change happens when the pain
"of staying the same becomes greater
"than the fear of the unknown."
End quote.
And until that moment arrives,
people stay exactly where they are,
even if they complain about it.
Here's the freeing part, okay?
Once you accept this truth,
frustration, it drops away.
You stop taking other
people's lack of change personally,
and you stop shaming yourself for not
being better yet, right?
You're human, you're not broken.
Okay, here is your
first takeaway of the year.
The Monday takeaway
is stop forcing change
in yourself or anyone else
and start respecting the timing of it.
So today, add a little whipped cream
to whatever you're working on,
not because it's perfect,
but because you're worked in progress.
Now, a little something
new to morning cereal.
We've been missing the prize
from the bottom of the
cereal box, so obvious.
And it's the morning
cereal trivia question.
And we're gonna start you out
today with an easy one, okay?
It's the first one, here it is.
How many bones are in the human body?
All right, we will see
you back here tomorrow
for the answer to that
and more sugar for the soul.
