SHOW ELEMENT:

Welcome to Sports Talk on the Hawk, the premier sports show for Juneau in Southeast Alaska powered by Subway of Alaska. Now let's get into the games with Scott McAdams.

Scott M:

Good evening, sports fans, and welcome to Sports Talk on the Hawk. My name is Scott McAdams. Subbing in for, Billy Amu Palma, we have our Tuesday cohost with us on a Thursday, Jason Hart. What's happening, Jason?

Jason H:

Oh, not much. You know, made it through, what they call a hurricane down south, we call a Thursday in June now, so in the studio.

Scott M:

Yeah. I I, I'm indoors all during my work day, but but, boy, just, driving from Lemon Creek over here to, the Juno Media Center, I I got blown over trying to get out of my car. But, yeah, it's just another day. A lot of crazy weather going on. Our hearts go out to all the people down in Los Angeles County that are battling the blazes down there, and a lot of implications for sports as the Lakers game was canceled tonight.

Scott M:

I don't know if you heard this, Jason, but today they moved the Monday night game between the Rams and the Vikings to Arizona. So Oh,

Jason H:

I had heard of the fish I hear they were talking about it, but I didn't know it officially had happened.

Scott M:

Yeah. A lot of I'm sure I mean, what else can you really do? The the the kind of a epic, looks like a nuclear bomb hit the the north end of LA County, from everything that we're seeing on the air. So, you know, thoughts and prayers go out to all those folks as they as they deal with, their lives being turned upside down due to natural disaster. But, yeah, the they did move it to, they did move it to Arizona.

Scott M:

So all those Minnesota fans as well as Rams fans. We talked a little bit about I don't know if I talked to you. I it may may have been, Patrick O'Neil, but just talking about kind of the weird landscape of the NFL in Los Angeles after, you know, not having a team when the Rams left to having the Raiders for a generation, to San Diego chargers moving to LA, and kind of the kind of a weird place in so much as there's more Raiders fans than there are chargers fans or Rams fans in LA. But,

Jason H:

Yeah. I've heard that Rams games are pretty much like a a home game for the other team at every every game.

Scott M:

Yeah. I think it's kind of an add add on to or maybe Disneyland is an add on to, a trip to SoCal Yeah. To, to check out the, the the home squad. One of my coworkers is a big Lions fan and he went down and watched the Lions play the Rams a year or 2 ago and said that, the the Lions fans in the in SoFi Stadium were pretty market. I've been to SoFi.

Scott M:

The it was the last regular season game, the year that the Rams won the Super Bowl. And, I went down to watch the Niners, play the Rams. It was the last year Jimmy Garoppolo was the starter for the Niners and boy, there was way more red than there was blue. But, but, yeah. I know, a lot going on in sports.

Scott M:

In fact, we have the Orange Bowl underway right now, with Penn State up 10 to nothing, here with a minute 34 left to go in the first half of play and what an anemic start. So there was some I read some press, that, you know, Notre Dame's been battling, a flu bug, which, you know, is no excuse, for necessarily for performance. But it may it may be something that is a a variable in in their equation right now is as, they hardly have anything happening, offensively. Only 27 yards rushing on 11 carries for Notre Dame in the first half. So, shut out, and, we'll be keeping an eye on that game and and

Jason H:

Riley Riley Leonard just got taken out for concussion protocol. So they got, it looks like Allegri, who's a transfer from Oregon State last year in the game.

Scott M:

Yeah. I see that. Yeah. Steve and and Jelly. Is that did you

Jason H:

say Jelly. Allegri. I don't I

Scott M:

don't know. I don't know.

Jason H:

I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Know.

Jason H:

Flash by on the screen.

Scott M:

So Yeah. Yeah. No. I'm taking a look at it right now. That that does look like breaking news.

Scott M:

And, of course, Penn State playing some some, tough defense, but their running attack, which is kinda what they're known for, up and going as they have a 141 yards on 28 carries. Caitron Allen, they're kinda premier backs, got 63 yards on 13 carries, and then their their one two punch, their spellback, Nicholas, Singleton, 52 yards on 10 carries. So looks like Penn State is in command of this game, we'll keep an eye on that and, let folks know. So plug your ears if you don't wanna hear it, but, we are in the in the final 4 of the college football playoffs. So you had mentioned this, Jason, the other day on on Tuesday.

Scott M:

I think you called, an all big ten final. I think it's looking like that. Tomorrow, Texas takes on on Ohio State. But, looks like Penn State is gonna is going to well, we'll see. The second half of play, a new quarterback, you never know.

Scott M:

There's things it's only 10 point lead, so anything can happen. So what's happening in your sports life, Jason? Anything, good that you're looking forward to? We got playoff football. I know you're a huge NBA fan at this time of year.

Jason H:

Oh, yeah. No. It's fantastic. I'm, you know, I was looking forward to going home watching the the basketball games tonight, but, you know, here I am. So

Scott M:

Well, speaking of basketball, we do have some yeah. No. Here you are. Actual couple of things. There was a, I think, an NBA game of interest last night as the Cleveland Cavaliers atop the east, took on the Oklahoma City top the west.

Scott M:

And, Cleveland, boy, showing that they're kind of they look for real with a third of the third of the season under their belts. They only have 4 losses on the year, including a victory, against the Thunder last night that gave them their 6th loss of the season. So 32 and 4 for the Cavaliers. Here at the local level, we have high school basketball coming up this weekend as our Crimson Bear Girls will be taking on the Saldotna Stars on both Friday Saturday. Those games take place at 7 PM.

Scott M:

Be sure to get out to the gym. If you can't make it to the gym and you're looking for a place to listen, those games will be called live on 107.9 The Hawks. So if you're tuned in now and you're hearing this, you can tune in then and catch the game. Also, in today's show at, during the 5 20 segment, we're actually gonna have, some team captains on the air from the girls squad, as coach Isaac is facilitating a phone call. So we'll have, Cambry Lockhart, Gwen, Nyzyk, and Kara Baxter on the phone to kinda give us an overview of their take on the season.

Scott M:

So, that should be fun to have, those players, on the air as the Crimson Bears looking at a 5 and 2 start to their season so far, with, you know, it looks like they could be a competitive team statewide, just kinda looking at the early returns, on the ASSA website of of how other women's programs are doing around the state. Of course, very early in the season, but, exciting, and I'm bullish on the Crimson Bears. Be looking forward to having them on the air and, talk things through a little bit again. Dano will be on the call Friday night at 7. Bob Sims will be on the call Saturday night at 7, right here on 107.9 The Hawk.

Scott M:

Wanna talk a little NFL today, we'll get into that as the playoffs are upon us. Playoff weekend, you know, wild card weekend, starting this Saturday. So we have Saturday games, Sunday games, and a Monday night game, to talk about. The only teams not playing, for the in in the playoff tournament will be the 1 seed Chiefs and the on the AFC side and the one seed lions on the NFC side. So looking forward to that.

Scott M:

I'll be watching. How about you, Jason? You got some time? Time carved out to watch NFL football this weekend.

Jason H:

Oh, maybe maybe Sunday. I'll, try to go go find something to hike or something on Saturday to get outside. Hopefully, it's not a torrential downpour, but, yeah, try not to spend my weekends shacked up on the couch. So we'll we'll just donate one day to that. So Sunday, hopefully.

Scott M:

You've been talking a lot about so you're doing are you doing a lot of hiking right now? What's your favorite trail in in in Juneau, or do you have one?

Jason H:

My favorite ones, I don't know. I do east probably 3 or 4 times a week. It's just a quick hour, hour and 10 minutes. So but, yeah, during the summer, I like to get the longer ones, you know, I like to be on top of Thunder and Salmon Creek and around there. So

Scott M:

Yeah. I I like to take the hike from my couch to the refrigerator in the in the during TV timeouts during the big game. But Could be

Jason H:

a long one depending. You know?

Scott M:

It it could be. It could be. I, I I actually have, had some health health improvements this year just from kinda changing my diet, kinda cut all sugar out. I've been doing the keto thing since last January, so I'm coming up on a 1 year anniversary of that. And

Jason H:

Oh, congratulations.

Scott M:

Yeah. Yeah. No. I'm I'm, I'm down I'm down a £100 from where I was last year, but weight's been an issue for me for for a long time. But I need to incorporate the, exercise thing.

Scott M:

So you're, you're inspiring me, Jason.

Jason H:

Exercise while eating bacon. That's why

Scott M:

I'm asking. Well, actually, bacon's on my menu. It's the the thing that kills me is the or used to kill me are the cookies, cakes, breads, and all all of that stuff. But this isn't a health show, and nobody really wants

Jason H:

to Hear from us about it.

Scott M:

No. Well, yeah. The right. Although, you know, hey, good on you for getting out there and walking around. I I, I need to do more of it.

Scott M:

So sometimes in the wintertime, it gets tough. Do do you ski? Have I asked you that question before you do any skiing?

Jason H:

No. I used to. Taught for a few years up at Eagle Crest, but haven't haven't for quite a while now.

Scott M:

You were a ski instructor?

Jason H:

Yep. Yep. That was a that was a fantastic time in my life being screamed at by 8 9 year olds,

Scott M:

and it

Jason H:

was great.

Scott M:

I I kinda see you as a a buttoned up, maybe maybe conservative guy. I don't know. I can't I I we never talked about these types of issues, but I'm thinking, you know, I I know you work for the mine. I know you're a professional. Ski instructor wouldn't have been one of the things that when I think of ski instructor, I think of a guy that lives in a van with his dog and, maybe a little bit more of a hippie than what I would think Jason Hart.

Scott M:

So how'd you get into ski instruction? I'm just curious.

Jason H:

I mean, I spent a few years skiing up there and then decided 1 year that, you know, I wanted to do it and actually did it for 1 winter where I never had a day off. So I had to work my Monday through Friday job and then was up Eagle Crest Saturday and Sunday, and that was a long winter. So and believe it or not, the pay is not amazing being a ski instructor, so it pretty much covered gas every 2 weeks and that was about it. And then PTSD for the mental abuse from the kids, and we were we called that a career.

Scott M:

Well, so you went from that to doing PA announcing as your side gig, which Oh, yeah. Pays the real big bucks.

Jason H:

Yeah. Yeah. No. Yeah. Coincidentally, the, yeah, Eagle Crest actually pays more than my current side kick.

Scott M:

Right. Which pays nothing. But we're glad to we're, you know, you know, we're it's it's, it's awesome that you do that for the kids. I I know that I I did that for the Crimson Bears for, 6 years. I I went back and tried to count the years I did.

Scott M:

It was 6 years that I did the PA announcing. It was a lot of fun. Got you get the best seat in the house, but, yeah. I know all volunteer. So good on you for doing that.

Scott M:

Hey, sports manager. Listen to the Sports Talk on the Hawk. Stay tuned. Again, coming up at the 5:20 mark, we're gonna have the girls basketball captains on the air to talk a little bit about their season right here on 107.9 The Hawk.

Speaker 4:

So did you miss me? It's me again, your radio. I just bumped into weird Bruce, the DJ again. You know, with Bruce, the antenna doesn't quite pick up all the channels, if you know what I mean. Let me put it this way, the difference between Bruce and say a savings bond is one of them will eventually mature and earn money.

Speaker 4:

Spoiler alert, it ain't Bruce. Well, speaking of money, here's some shocking data. If you're a marketer, business owner, or manager looking to acquire more customers, did you know radio is the most consumed media channel? That's right. More than TV, print, and online.

Speaker 4:

I don't wanna brag, but I'm named North America's number one reach medium at about a whopping 94% each week. That's a lot of years. Also, radio's dominance doesn't stop there, it reaches the most affluent audience of any media. About 93% of radio's listeners are considered upscale. So if you're listening to me right now, you are very desirable.

Speaker 4:

Some might even say

hot. Find out how Juno Media Center can help your business grow with radio. Go to Juno mediacenter.com for more information about radio advertising.

You're listening to Sports Talk on the Hawk brought to you by Subway, Sacred Shine. Listen live on the free Juno Media Center app. Stream or enjoy the podcast at the hawkjuno.com.

Scott M:

Welcome back to Sports Talk on the Hawk. My name is Scott McAmbs. I'm here with Jason Hart, and, it is an Orange Bowl Thursday as we're heading into halftime as Notre Dame takes on Penn State. So Notre Dame just got a field goal and kinda kinda mentioned you never know how things can change and that things move fast. So this backup quarterback comes into the ball game here, looking at the box score, goes so Ryan Leonard was actually having a bit of a tough time.

Scott M:

There was a a minute there, well, I think it was 4 of 10 with an interception. The Steve in Angeli comes off the bench, goes 6 for 7, 44 yards and scores, here before the half. So it's only a 7 point lead for Penn State. So hold hold the phones. We're not gonna call anything in that game yet as, you just never know who's gonna walk in, inspire the team.

Scott M:

You know, sometimes you have a kid on the bench that might be better than, than than you recognize or might be the right guy in the right moment. So we'll keep an eye on this Notre Dame, Penn State game. But I I wanted to talk, Jason, about something that I know is near and dear to your heart, something that you'd love to think about and talk about. Maybe you you probably dream about, this at night, and that's Ohio State coach Ryan Day. So I'm I'm I'm reading an article in in, so I come in every day and and do some research research for the show, as I as I prepare, to come on air every night at 5 and spend about an hour.

Scott M:

I read an article about how Ryan Day, so 2 losses, on the regular season. They lose in the regular season to Oregon, but they lose to the 7 and 5 Michigan Wolverines. Right?

Jason H:

Sad day. Sad day.

Scott M:

Well well, sad day for him. But but here's the craziness. And so Nick Saban on on college game day actually, kinda made a statement about Ohio State and their their obsession with beating Michigan. Basically tell them that they need the therapeutic intervention. He said he he thought that the fans at Auburn were were crazy about their obsession with Alabama, but that that, Michigan literally lives in Ohio State's head, rent free.

Scott M:

And kind of the premise of this article is it's it's based on a snapshot of the the author's kind of view of the world when it comes to all things OSU out in the webosphere, or I guess the the the TikTok nation or social media in general. Right? And kind of its premise is is that the odd thing is that even though Ohio State avenged their loss to Oregon, even though Ohio State completely decimated Tennessee in the 1st round of the playoffs, even though they came back and avenged themselves versus Oregon in the playoff, which I guess I just mentioned, there's a lot of chatter out there of a move on from Ryan Day sentiment amongst the fan base even as he looks at the potential for a national championship just because they lost to Michigan. What do you think about that, Jason?

Jason H:

No. They won't they won't get rid of him. I mean, I think the the AD has said the same thing, but I I think the thing Ryan Day and going back into Michigan living rent free in their head is, like, if Ohio State would have played their game like they've played all year long, they I mean, I'll fully admit they probably beat Michigan by 30, but he was so hell bent on beating Michigan at their own game. It was you know, it led to their demise on that game. You know?

Jason H:

He was driven to run the ball down their throat for the whole game, and it never never happened.

Scott M:

Right. No. Yeah. Exactly. It's 3rd and 10, and they're on the they're on their own 20, and he runs the ball.

Scott M:

When he's got the best wide receivers in college football, he's got pro ready wide receivers. And I I I hear what you're saying. No. He was Michigan was definitely in his head. So, but, yeah, the takeaway from the article is is that, Ryan Day is, might be desired by the NFL and still not good enough to coach at Ohio State.

Jason H:

They'll probably go to the Bears. That makes sense for them to hire Ryan Day. So

Scott M:

You'd love you would love that. Yeah. Well, no doubt. Then you could then you could root against him as a Packers fan, and, I'm sure you'd love that as well. But, anyways, just the the the some of these sports fan bases and I know what it's like to to, you know, maybe feel a little bit, some kind of way about your franchise, especially when you're winning.

Scott M:

It was an embarrassment of riches, being a Golden State Warriors fan from 2012 to 2000 22. Right? And, Kevin Durant notwithstanding, which we we we kind of the the the franchise came and kind of became the poster child for what was wrong with the NBA when, it was viewed that they hired this mercenary, Kevin Durant, to come in and just help an otherwise good team dominate. But it was it was it was it was great to feel all that winning. As a San Francisco Giants fan in 10, 12, and 14, it was like, okay, well, we're go we're gonna win the World Series every even year.

Scott M:

I mean, that was the joke. It was kind of that feeling. As a kid, getting to root for Joe Montana, and be a San Francisco 49ers fan, it was a it was it was there was a a just a richness to that that kind of catapulted me into into sports in general as a sports fan. But I I think that what can happen when you have a lot of success is you start to develop a sense of entitlement. Right?

Scott M:

And Ohio State went through a long period, like, under Woody Hayes back in the the the old school Ohio State era, was was, was great football, but they had a period of a a long period, a decades long period of mediocrity, followed by Urban Meyer and, the national championship that they won. And now Ryan Day, being Ryan Day's got a winning percentage of, like, almost 900, but still not good enough. Can't beat Michigan.

Jason H:

Yeah. What's that winning percentage against Michigan?

Scott M:

It's not it's not

Jason H:

that. 50.

Scott M:

Yeah. Something like that. Something like that definitely are close to it. Hey, sports fans. Keep it locked right here at 107.9, the Hawk.

Scott M:

We're gonna have the Crimson Bear player captains on the phone to talk about their season right after this break.

Scott M:

Welcome back to the show, and thank you for tuning in to Sports Talk on the Hawk. On the air, we have, the captains for the Crimson Bear Basketball team. They're gonna kind of, run things down over on the girls' side of what's happening so far this year. So big thanks to coach Tanya Nizek for putting this together. So on the phone, we have Cambry Lockhart, Gwen Nizek, and Kara Baxter.

Scott M:

Ladies, are you with us?

Speaker 10:

Yeah. We're here.

Scott M:

Hey. Fantastic. And thank you so much for coming on the air. I know you guys are prepping for a home stand here versus, versus So High, and, we're looking forward to that. That game will be broadcast live here on the air.

Scott M:

So I just wanted to take an opportunity to kind of, check-in with, with coach and players here, and, see how your season's going so far. So, thanks again for being on the air. We appreciate it. So a couple of questions just kinda wanted to, run through with you guys as, you, you so it's my understanding that the JV is playing clock tonight, and so appreciate you taking some time off from rooting for the the junior varsity to come get on the air. So first question I was curious about, ladies, would you do you have any favorite so you guys went and and, went 2 and 2 down in Las Vegas, the Tarquinian classic basketball tournament.

Scott M:

Why don't you kinda share with the listening audience kinda how that experience was? What maybe what some of your favorite memories, were from that, and what you learned about your team on that trip down to Las Vegas?

Speaker 10:

Yeah. I mean, those were our first games of the season, so it really just kinda gave us an idea to what strategies worked well, and it really bonded our team on and off the court. My favorite memory from Las Vegas was going on the New York New York roller coaster as a team, and it was just a great experience for us.

Scott M:

No. That's fantastic. And but that time that you get to spend away and and kind of you're all living together, practicing together, and I I imagine it's good also for for team chemistry. So how did the games go while you were down in Las Vegas? Kinda what what did you learn as far as, you know, did did you learn anything about your squad, early on being your first games of the year?

Speaker 10:

I would say that we definitely took away something from each game, that will help us throughout the season, to progress. But, yeah, I thought we learned some defensive things and offensive things, both good and bad, but the earlier that you learn them and acknowledge them, then the better we're gonna be down the season.

Scott M:

No. Absolutely. And, and good on you. So the the season starts on the on the 4th December, and then you guys, got right to it. In fact, I think you are what already one of the more experienced squads, in 4 a women's basketball taking a look at the Alaska School Activities Association, game schedule so far this year.

Scott M:

So, next question next question, ladies. And maybe if each one of you so again, we have, Cambry Lockhart, Gwen Nizek, and Kara Baxter on the phone. Captains for the Crimson Bear women's varsity basketball squad, sporting a 5 win, 2 loss record so far on the season, and also, champions of the Capital City Classic, George Houston Capital City Classic. They won that, tournament at home, with an undefeated record in the tournament. So, ladies, let me ask you this.

Scott M:

Knowing what you know so far, what are your dreams? What are your goals, for this this 24, 25 squad? What are your goals for the season?

Speaker 10:

Well, of course, our team goal is for the season is to win state, but to get there, we know it'll take a lot of hard work, which we are putting in, and we're determined to get there. Yeah. I think we all have that goal of date and go on to do kind of whatever and just put, like, our heart and soul into it for the next couple months to get to that goal for us. Yeah. It the competition is just gonna get harder from here, so we just gotta put in the teamwork and hard work.

Speaker 10:

That's really what counts.

Scott M:

Hey, Vince. Yeah. No. That's great. And, wishing you all the best as you continue to to to pursue that.

Scott M:

And, we're looking forward to seeing, the squad. We we, I've been calling games on the air for for, a number of years and had a a chance to watch a lot of, both the 3 you ladies as well as your teammates play over the last few years. I'm excited to see, kind of, this team continue to grow as, you you know, everybody knows that the Thunder Mountain closed this last year, and, you became one squad, in the red and black. And so it's it's exciting to see you kids, come together and, and play as you move forward in the season. So ladies, we have our co host, Jason Hart, here on the phone, who's also your PA announcer, most of the time.

Scott M:

So he's he's got your next question.

Jason H:

Yeah. So, I mean, I I kinda feel like I know the answer, just be able to see you guys, you know, work together in the gym there. But how do you how do you think the team team chemistry has, you know, started off the year and how you guys are are building, you know, as you move move forward through this this journey in the 2025 season.

Speaker 10:

Yeah. I mean, team chemistry to me is utilizing each other's strength to maximize our potential. And, I mean, we know where our teammates are on the court and can effectively move the ball, and I'm just excited to continue applying these to our games this season.

Jason H:

K. Oh, go ahead. Sorry.

Speaker 10:

I think we're very well. Mesh teams are ready. I think all teams need time to continue to grow that. But a lot of us have already played together, in the past when we're younger. So I'm really excited to see now that we're older, what we can do and where our potential is at.

Scott M:

The

Speaker 10:

they kinda had the same thing I was gonna say, but we've also most of us have been coached by Tanya before. So it's not really that different. I think it's pretty awesome actually that we all get to play together again. So yeah.

Jason H:

Yeah. That was definitely definitely fun to watch watch in the gym. And, so, yeah, I'm looking looking forward to the rest of the season. What's what what kind of are couple main focuses you guys have for the game this weekend? Is anything sticking out that you need to work on either, you know, internally or focus on for, Sildotna coming to town?

Speaker 10:

Well, according to Sildotna's stats so far this season, they have some pretty well rounded players that we'll have to lock up, but our overall focus for me, I think, is to control the game, its tempo, our rebounds, our shot attempts, and just moving the ball effectively. Yeah. I think to add on to that, we're very fast, team. We have a quick pace, and I think that's one of our biggest strengths. So really working on rebounding and defense so we can get that ball back and push it up the floor to create our own offense.

Speaker 10:

Yeah. I think we just gotta keep doing what we're doing. You know, keep doing us and we'll be we'll be good.

Scott M:

Hey. That that's a that's a great answer. Keep being you and, play to your strength and and, looking forward to seeing those games. So, ladies, I I know it's early in the season, and granted, you guys are doing, the program that coach lays out for you. But I'm sure that you also kinda know the lay of the land here in the state of Alaska, and a lot and and all all 3 of you ladies have varsity experience, in the books, on tape, here in years past.

Scott M:

So let me ask you this question. When you take a look, at, the 4 a landscape in women's basketball, what do you see? And and when as you continue to hold on to that dream of cutting down nets at March Madness up at the Alaska Airlines Center, come this March, as as you hold that dream, you know, to your heart, who do you kinda see as being some of the big obstacles out there in, 4 a women's basketball? So who are who are gonna be some of the toughest opponents, that Juno might have to go through, to achieve your dream of winning state?

Speaker 10:

I would definitely say that Wasilla and Colony are gonna be some really tough opponents. We played at home, both teams. Right? Wasilla. Oh, just Wasilla.

Speaker 10:

But I think it'll be really great to see where we to that.

Scott M:

So Oh, you're you're kinda breaking you're breaking up on that one if you wanna talk directly into the mic or your phone there. But you you so you mentioned Wasilla?

Speaker 10:

Yes. I said that Wasilla, we play them at home, and I just think that after we play them at home, they're gonna be we're gonna see where we stand after that. If I remember

Scott M:

right, so both Wasilla and you mentioned Colony as well. And, Colony has some great 3 point shooters, if I remember that squad, because they did come to Juno and play Thunder Mountain last year. And then remembering Wasilla, they have this the 6 foot 2 center that committed to to, the big 10. I'm gonna go play at Caitlin Clark's Iowa. So, yeah, definitely some players, but, how do you think you match up against either Colony's 3 point shooting or the or the big center from Wasilla?

Scott M:

How do you how do you feel about, those elements of those team 2 teams games?

Speaker 10:

I think we're a really well rounded team. So I think we have a lot of good guards and as well as posts that are fast and can't get up to 4. I think it'd be really interesting to see, but I do think we're a pretty well rounded team with different aspects that are filled, those spots are filled on our team. Yeah. I agree.

Speaker 10:

I think was still has a lot of height. Colony has 2 very good shooters, but we're also a competitive and hardworking and diverse team, and I'd risk us pretty highly on a statewide scale. And our team is fully determined to battle at state and start to that San Francisco segment.

Scott M:

Hey. Hey. Thank you. And we're we're looking forward to watching it. So let let ladies, let me ask you this question.

Scott M:

So, Kara, I I believe that I heard the news that you signed, a letter of intent to go be a Seawolf next year up at UAA. Is that true? And and then also for both Gwen and Cambry, do you guys have any aspirations to to play even beyond the high school level?

Speaker 10:

You start with the yeah. I'm really excited to be a Seawolf Seawolf next year. I went on my what do you call it? Recruitment trip in September, and I it was really amazing. I love the coaches and the girls are really nice.

Speaker 10:

So yeah.

Scott M:

Well, we'll be rooting for you. How about, how about, Gwen or Cambry? Do you have any any any dreams of playing, hoops either at junior college or a college after you're done being a Crimson Bear?

Speaker 10:

I think that it's definitely achievable for both of us. As for me, I'm not quite sure what I wanna do yet after high school, but it's definitely in the picture if I wanna work hard for it. Yeah. I'm interested in playing at a higher level, and any any higher level would be achievable, and I'm willing to work hard for that. I I love basketball, and I I'm looking into it.

Speaker 10:

I think it would be awesome.

Scott M:

Well, that's that's fantastic. And, we wish you the best as you guys both pursue your your goals and dreams for the season and even beyond. Hey, ladies. Wanna let you know just straight away, you guys sound fantastic on the radio. Thanks so so much for coming on our show.

Speaker 10:

Thank you.

Scott M:

Hey. You bet. And, go bears. And, we'll see you on, on Friday at 7, and we encourage folks out there in, in, the radio audience to go check out the Crimson Bears play at the George Houston Gym. That comes up on Friday at 7 and against Saturday at 7.

Scott M:

Ladies, thanks so much for being on, on the air. Again, team captains, Cambry Lockhart, Gwen Nizek, and Kara Baxter. Ladies, thank you so much for being on the air.

Speaker 10:

Thank you.

SHOW ELEMENT:

You're listening to Sports Talk on the Hawk brought to you by Subway, Sacred Shine. Listen live on the free Juno Media Center app. Stream or enjoy the podcast at the hawkjuno.com.

Scott M:

Welcome back to Sports Talk on the Hawk. Well, Jason, great to have, the kids on the air, and I think Crimson Bears got a shot this year.

Jason H:

Yeah. I mean, I think they'll definitely make some noise. It was interesting to see, you know, they they spoke about the tempo, and I think, you know, one of the closer games they played in the Capital City Classic was against, Chugiak. And Chugiak was able to hang with them, you know, pretty much through the first half, and then it seemed kinda just to wear them down in the in the second half. Obviously, they probably, you know, made some kind of scheme adjustment at halftime as well.

Jason H:

But I think towards the, you know, the end of that game, they really kinda blew it blew it open. So, yeah. You know, getting to play while still at home, you know, you can have 1 division 1 player, but there's still 4 other people that got to play as well. So I think, you know, top to bottom, JD stacks up really well against pretty much anybody in the state, I think.

Scott M:

Yeah. No. Good point. And, we will, we'll be rooting for those kids again. The game's being broadcast live here on 107.9 The Hawk, Dano on Friday, Bob Sims on Saturday, both at 7 PM.

Scott M:

So if you can't make it to the gym, be sure to tune in live here on the air. And, you know, we're we will, also, work to to continue to have we've had coach Casperson on the air, want to offer the same opportunity to have him bring some of his captains on, and we'll work on getting that done over on the boys side as well. But it's great to have the girls on air, as they have the big home match up again this weekend versus so high. Taking a look at the high school schedule on both the boys and girls side. So January 3rd 4th was the opening of region 5, and, Jason Jason and I talked quite a bit about those games on Tuesday as Jason was there doing the PA announcing.

Scott M:

And I was up in the booth calling 1 of the 2 games last weekend. So we're able to kinda check out the the varsity. An interesting schedule this year though, Jason, as we don't get to see another home game for the boys until the end of the month, January 31st, February 1st, versus Mount Edgecumbe High School. You're gonna be, at the gym for that one?

Jason H:

Yeah. I think it's just some I don't know if you call it poor scheduling or what, but, yeah, I was I was talking with coach about it a few weeks ago, and, yeah, it's definitely a a large gap of almost a month, you know, between being able to see the the boys bears in the in the gym, and then I think they're here, and then I I think they have another couple weeks on the road, then they kinda go back to back towards the end of February. So, yeah, not a definitely gonna have to take advantage of when they're in town. So

Scott M:

No no doubt. It is kind of an odd schedule. I I can only imagine. So I I do have the perspective of having served, as athletic director, for Sickett High School, a number of years back. And the way scheduling meetings work so I I I I mean, I'm just it's a curiosity to me because we had a transition in our high school app activities director as Chad Bence, took an opportunity in the lower forty eight to go teach down there.

Scott M:

And, coach Herman came on as a new athletic director, but had not yet been hired. And so, kind of the way, if you can imagine, a group of athletic directors from all over the state being together in kind of a ballroom at an Anchorage hotel, it's almost like speed dating. You you've got your, you you you know, some of these relationships exist, some of the conversations occur before that meeting, but it's really a it's really an important piece to, building the the best possible schedule. This is just conjecture. I don't know exactly, you know, what happened to to leave a whole month, on the road for the Crimson Bear Boys, but, that could have been part of it.

Scott M:

Because oftentimes, the, you know, those those those scheduling meetings are where you you pick up that that 2 game, you know, weekend trip from somebody out of conference and, may or may not have happened as there was a transition there at athletic director. However, the good news is is that while we do, we will have after the so high games versus the girls, we will have 2 weeks without basketball. But January 24th 25th, the girls will take on Diamond at home, Friday Saturday, both at 7 PM. Both games being broadcast here on the station. And then on February 7th 8th, the girls pointed out Wasilla as being one of the big, opponents that they see on the schedule and as being an obstacle for their goal of winning state.

Scott M:

Put mark your calendars as that game will happen on the 7th 8th February. And then on Valentine's Day, the girls will be taking on Keihai. So that's kind of the the short term. The season goes on after that, but we'll continue to keep you posted, as to what's happening next in the realm of high school basketball here in Juneau. Also, the other, sport that's happening over, at Juno Douglas High School is hockey.

Scott M:

Don't have a score. Did did you catch a score yet? Or the I know they played Houston this morning, and it was broadcast live. I was at work. I haven't caught the score yet.

Jason H:

Oh, I didn't.

Scott M:

Yeah. I did

Jason H:

I did see the write up in the Juno Empire about Asa reaching out about the suspensions and stuff from last week's games with Bartlett. Oh, I did. Yeah. It made the front page of the Juno Empire.

Scott M:

Oh my goodness.

Jason H:

I think that's probably the first time in my time in June I've ever seen anything like that. So it kinda stood out.

Scott M:

I'll have to check that out. I'm I'm completely unaware of that. The the the the sports beat rider over at the Empire, Klaus Dolpi, does a I think he does a fantastic job. He, really does his homework, is always at every event. He's, he's written for the peers of a pilot, he's written for the sick of sentinel, he's written for the empire in a couple different incarnations, but sports are are that guy's jam and and he does a great job of of covering things.

Scott M:

Another interesting factoid, Klaus Dolphy was my 8th grade basketball coach, which, you know, you just, it's a small state, you never know who who, you're gonna continue to work with and see around, who was also part of my development as a young athlete. So, shout out to Klaus. But, no, I'll have to take a look. Front page news, that sounds like, almost expose form. Yeah.

Scott M:

My goodness. I didn't realize that there was huge controversies that happened. So I'm not gonna report on it. I'm not even gonna talk about it because I don't know any not that I don't wanna talk about things I don't know anything about. In fact, I this is kind of my stock and trade.

Jason H:

That's I mean, that's what this show's about. Right?

Scott M:

Well, yeah. Right? Exactly. Talking about the Ohio State fan base.

Jason H:

It is, is that Notre Dame went right down the field, and it is now 10 to 10. Start of the Q3. So

Scott M:

My goodness. I'm gonna have to look at the box score on that as backup quarterback.

Jason H:

No. Riley Leonard's back in.

Scott M:

Oh, Riley Leonard's back in the ball game. Well, good. He maybe maybe, maybe Steve, Angeli. Well, let's and and the good news is and and Riley Leonard, of course, a dual threat quarterback, known for his rushing attack, as well as his passing attack. So, hopefully, he'll be able to get things rolling and and going.

Scott M:

But, yeah, 10 to 10. So, the Irish finding some life here in the Orange Bowl with 1046 left to go in the 3rd. Sports manager, listen to Sports Talk on the Hawk with Scott and Jason. We'll be right back after this commercial break.

So did you miss me? It's me again, your radio. I just bumped into weird Bruce the DJ again. You know, with Bruce, the antenna doesn't quite pick up all the channels, if you know what I mean. Let me put it this way, the difference between Bruce and say, a savings pawn is one of them will eventually mature and earn money.

Speaker 4:

Spoiler alert, it ain't Bruce. Well, speaking of money, here's some shocking data. If you're a marketer, business owner, or manager looking to acquire more customers, did you know radio is the most consumed media channel? That's right, more than TV, print and online. I don't wanna brag, but I'm named North America's number one reach medium at about a whopping 94% each week.

Speaker 4:

That's a lot of years. Also, radio's dominance doesn't stop there. It reaches

Scott M:

the most affluent audience of any media. About 93%

Speaker 4:

of radio's listeners are considered of any media. About 93% of radio's listeners are considered upscale. So if you're listening to me right now, you are very desirable. Some might even say hot.

SHOW ELEMENT:

Now back to sports talk on the hawk.

Scott M:

Welcome back to the show, and thank you for tuning in to Sports Talk on the Hawk. My name is Scott McAdams. I'm here with Jason Hart. And so one of the missions of this show, we started last August, and here we are in 2025, keeping it rocking and rolling weeknights from 5 to 6, Monday through Friday. Albeit, there will be a couple, couple of Fridays this basketball season where the show is postponed as we'll be calling games, in fact, when Monroe, Catholic comes down from Fairbanks, as well as North Pole High School here towards the end of the season, there'll be some girls and boys varsity match ups, 5 o'clock games and 7 o'clock games on Friday night.

Scott M:

So we will take a few nights off. But nevertheless, we we we keep it moving here on the show. But part of the scope of what we have talked about in the past and what we hope to continue to talk about and emphasize at the local level here is youth sports, high school sports, and adult sports. And, you we've talked to leadership from, Jaha, the Juno Adult Hockey Association, and kind of gotten the rundown of of how things are going there. We've talked to the executive director of, the Juno Softball Association.

Scott M:

We talked to Tatiana Perkins from Sitka. She gave us a rundown of mud ball last year. But, wanna kinda keep things moving, in that direction and and, hope to to, talk some more with, we've had Travis Dibdahl on on the air, who is kind of the the czar of City League Basketball right now being administered through Klinken and Haida. They're coming up on their halfway point, playing, Tuesdays Thursdays in the evenings at d z, and playing Sunday games at Thunder Mountain High School, all Sunday afternoon from 3:15 till 10 PM. There's games happening there.

Scott M:

So, big stuff happening in City League Basketball, people staying fit, staying active. Jason, I wanna I want yesterday, I asked, Patrick, our our Wednesday co host, if he thought that clowning was a sport or could be considered a sport of performing art. Because the Jack right now is doing clowning lessons, and they're gonna have a showcase performance. He told me that clearly it's not a sport. It's a performing art.

Scott M:

But let me ask you this. If you think this is within the realm of adult sports, Sundays at the Red Dog, the Juno dance, organization is hosting, a whole series of swing dance at the Red Dog on Sunday. So, up until Folk Fest, except for Super Bowl Sunday, so for the rest of and Folk Fest is is is months out. You can go on Sunday nights to the Red Dog, beginner lessons start at 6 PM, and then there's a social dancing period from 7 to 9. No admission.

Scott M:

All they ask is that you support the Red Dog with buying, food, drinks, and and tips. But, it's an all ages event. Jason, do you think that swing dance could be considered an adult sport, or is it it's kind of what kinda on the border of recreation. What do you think?

Speaker 4:

Well, I

Jason H:

can't dance for anything, so I'm gonna be respectful and say I think it's a sport. So I would have to show up at noon to be halfway highly intoxicated by 6. To be brave enough to get out there and attempt to

Scott M:

So for anyone

Speaker 4:

any other dancer.

Scott M:

Anyone who wants some general entertainment, you can count on Jason Hart being at the Red Dog. I'm just kidding. But, no. So anyways, that's happening and, good on him for doing that. Also, I think we're at the end.

Scott M:

In fact, I think registration ends on 10th for Parks and Rec Coed Volleyball, and that season goes all the way through April as well. So if you're scrambling and just at the kind of end of things, or haven't heard, call Parks and Rec, take a look at their website as, coed adult volleyball happening through Parks and Rec. Also, something on the menu right now for youth activities, a couple of different wrestling clubs in town. So you have the Juno wrestling club that's out at the Juno wrestling center in the valley. I know that they have their kind of freestyle spring, program that's starting right about now.

Scott M:

So you'll want to take a look at their website or inquire if you have a kid who's interested. Also, the, I think it's the Douglas Dynamite, somebody doing youth wrestling over at the Mount Jumbo Gym. You know anything about about the Douglas Dynamite, Jason? I know you're kind of a wrestling dad. Is that a new thing?

Jason H:

No. No. They've been been around forever. It's generally usually a smaller smaller group. You know, it's more well, obviously, it's more the Douglas, the Douglas kids that, you know, don't want to make the 7 mile trek to the valley.

Jason H:

So they have a little club over there in the in the Mount Jumbo gym and, they do, you know, they do a really really good job with a small group. They they put out a lot of high quality little wrestlers over there. So

Scott M:

It kinda probably kinda makes it fun locally to have some competition from a different club too. I I know that Juno has 2 little leagues. Right? And that's that's still the case, I think, for there's the when I was a kid, I remember going to all stars, back when, Skagway and Haines had a joint squad. But, being on the Petersburg All Star team and Juno only had one little league back then, and they were they were so dominant.

Scott M:

Ketchikan, every once in a while, would be competitive with them. But when it came to Rangel, Petersburg, and all of our all star squads, not very competitive, but yeah. So having 2 in town, you know, sometimes that could be a good thing. Hey, sports fans. You're Listen to Sports Talk on the Hawk.

Scott M:

We'll wrap up the show right after this break.

Speaker 4:

So did you miss me? It's me again, your radio. I just bumped into weird Bruce the DJ again. You know, with Bruce, the antenna doesn't quite pick up all the channels, if you know what I mean. SHOW ELEMENT:

Now back to Sports Talk on the Hawk.

Scott M:

Welcome back to Sports Talk on the Hawk. You're listening to Scott and Jason. So Jason Hart, our in house ratings booster. This guy is our, our inside football analyst here. We we wanna get we wanna crack into his, his football acumen here and, you know, get get a couple we're gonna we're we're we're gonna play the game, who who wins, with Jason here.

Scott M:

And so, talking about wild card weekend, games on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. So starting on Saturday, it's an all AFC Saturday, at the 12:30 window, on, CBS, the Los Angeles chargers under Jim Harbaugh take on the Houston Texans. So, the the chargers, back in the playoff scene, 1st year, Harbaugh, the turnaround artist. Damico Ryans, the the the guy who played linebacker for Houston, who came back to coach after success as a defensive coordinator in the league. Jason, who do you like, The chargers or the texans?

Scott M:

And and why?

Jason H:

Chargers 2717 because Jim Harbaugh still lives rent free and CJ Stroud's head.

Scott M:

You had to take it right back to Michigan, Ohio State. Okay. Fair enough. I expect nothing less. Second game, 4 PM.

Scott M:

This is gonna be on Amazon Prime. Russell Wilson and the Pittsburgh Steelers take on Lamar Jackson, missed everybody's MVP, and the Baltimore Ravens. Who do you like in that game and why?

Jason H:

I'm probably gonna stick with Baltimore. I I thought the Steelers were pretty hot there in the middle of the season. They've kinda fizzled, and, you know, now isn't the time to really be trying to figure out how to play football. I think it'll be a close game. I'll go 2723.

Jason H:

2723.

Scott M:

There you have it, though, folks. So moving over to Sunday, 3 games on Sunday starting in the AFC as the AFC East champion, Buffalo Bills, and Josh Allen take on the upstart wildcard, Bo Nicks and the Denver Broncos. Jason, who do you like in that game?

Jason H:

I think that game is gonna be kind of a shootout, I think. I think Buffalo ends up winning, but I'm gonna say 3427.

Scott M:

Alright. There you have it. Next game coming on Fox, and that's gonna be during the 12:30 window on Sunday. The champions of the NFC East versus the wild card out of the NFC North, it's the Green Bay Packers at the Philadelphia Eagles. Who do you like in that ball game?

Jason H:

Philadelphia, 2717, Saquon Barkley, 183 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns.

Scott M:

It's very detailed in your in that's why we bring you in as the the house analyst.

Jason H:

And that's even against my own team.

Scott M:

I know. So there that's called unbiased reporting. And then the night cap on Sunday night, 4 PM, on NBC Football Night in America, the champions of the NFC South, Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on the 5 seed, top seed, wildcard out of the NFC East, the Washington Commanders. Who do you like?

Jason H:

I think that's gonna be a high scoring fun game. If they can shut down Mike Evans, I'm gonna go Redskins. Oh, sorry. Commanders, 28 27. 28/27.

Jason H:

Yep.

Scott M:

There you have it. Jaden Daniels, probably the rookie of the year, if not, even on the periphery of the MVP conversation. And then finally, the game that was moved from LA to Arizona because of the wildfires in the Hollywood Hills, the wildcard Minnesota Vikings take on the NFC West champion, Los Angeles Rams. Who do you like in that ball game?

Jason H:

I'm gonna go Rams. I think, Stafford's gonna throw it all over to Puka and Cooper Kupp, and then Jordan Whittington's coming on as well. So and I'll go, 3026.

Scott M:

There you have it. Hey, Jason. That's that's the program. Thanks for coming on.

Jason H:
