It is 20 hours past midnight and happy Valentine’s Day to you, but whether the love or hate grows in your heart on this bifurcated Valentine Super Bowl dia fiesta, it’s time to break out the new tunes as it is Monday, marked with a big shining pink heart as Feb 14, 2022. This is Danno bringing all the new love from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Wishing you all a happy Valentine’s Day once again, and grateful to have you with us to start the work week right. Lots of very good tunes to check out for the full two hours along with a few romantic favorites with maybe a dose of football thrown in, Kat Bass will join us once again to take us through all the new pop and drama you can take for the 2nd hour this evening, and for the first hour we have a big new album out from Big Thief along with new singles from Joywave, Omar Apollo and Caroline Polachek to taste test as well. But before we get to any of that, let’s start this St. Valentine’s Day with a Kiss, and THIS is The Drop.
Prince – Kiss
The Drop is officially rolling forward in the pink car tonight, happy Valentine’s Day once again if you’re just getting with the program, and we hope all you football heads enjoyed your Super Bowl Monday here in Korea as well.
And who better to start Valentine’s Day with than Prince? That was Kiss from his 1986 album Parade, which was a #1 LP in the US and a top tenner in the UK at the time.
Interestingly, the band Mazarati, which was formed by Prince's bass player Brown Mark and signed to his Paisley Park record label, asked Prince for a song for their debut album, so he took a break from his Parade sessions and dashed off a minute-long bluesy acoustic demo for them on a mini tape recorder. Mazarati and producer David Z re-worked the song, giving it an irresistible funk groove. When he heard it, Prince was smart enough to take the song right back. He replaced their lead vocal, added the guitar break in the chorus and included it as a last-minute addition to his album.
Also of interest was a recent article interview I read with Shaquille O’Neal. Of course, Shaq was a huge star in any sense of the word when he broke into the NBA in the early 90’s.
One thing he said was he had a revelation when he met Prince back then. He said that watching Prince get doted on by a gaggle of beautiful women at the time not only made him a tinge jealous, but it also let him see that he didn’t exactly have it like THAT. Prince was just an artist that was always at the tippy-top if not beyond A list celebrity, and Shaq meeting him back then kind of gave him a look at what the true meaning is of superstardom. It must have been a trip to see that lifestyle, may he rest in power.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So, now that we have the shameless self-promo out of the way, let’s get to the new tunes for tonight, and up next is Joywave to be followed by Myd and Lauren Auder, all of which we’ll read out the little pink cards for you after the hearts float off into space. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
______
The Drop resumes the microphone bidness on this New Muses Monday night, our final verbal joust of the first fourth of the program. Danno here, studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, Valentines are in the mail to all of you joining us tonight, thank you. Kat Bass joins us for the first time in studio for a while in hour 2, and she’ll have all the pop in tow for after 9pm. For right now though, we just let the first few of our new balloons in the air, so let’s get the readings…
Joywave – We Are All We Need (…the veteran rock band out of Rochester, NY is out with their fourth album digitally as of Friday. The album is a fun ear worm musically, but gets darker the deeper you dig. The songs and lyrics mainly deal with themes about our culture of superficiality and throwaway fads, and the struggle of finding true fulfillment within such a dynamic. The album is called Cleanse and is available everywhere now, out on Feb 25 on vinyl for all you wax addicts out there.)
Myd feat JAWNY – The Sun (…last year the French artist, DJ, and sound engineer released his debut album Born A Loser, and this tune sees him going back to a tune he did in 2017. For those unfamiliar JAWNY is an American artist now signed to Interscope, who had a breakout tune in 2019 called Honeypie.)
Lauren Auder – Hauntology (…continuing with the French connection, France-born Lauren Auder is out with this as of the weekend, and is probably the most intricate and well-crafted song we’ll feature tonight. The tune was recorded with guitar legend Steve Vai, and the orchestral accompaniment with her lyrical delivery just takes this tune right to the very top sonically with a beautiful mélange of competing yet complimentary elements woven together to perfection.)
Alright, so we still have a couple of tunes to check before the end of part 1 tonight, with the first being a cut from Big Thief’s latest LP Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You, and this joint is called Red Moon, do check in full I know I will be this week a couple of times. After that we have another lovely number from S. Carey to take us home to the jump and then part 2, this one called Break Me Open, which is the title track to the artist’s first album in four years, so do check that as well if you dig the vibe. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
Big Thief – Red Moon
S. Carey – Break Me Open

II
The Drop returns as we pay tribute to Valentine’s Day once again along with Super Bowl Monday here in Korea. Danno here, holding down things as I do every single week, and Kat Bass is in studio for the first time in several of those tonight, so big things are afoot that are not football. As to what we just started quarter 2 with, that was...
Etta James – A Sunday Kind of Love (…released by James on her most commercially noted album At Last in 1960, this one is a jazz standard composed by Barbara Belle,[a] Anita Leonard,[b] Stan Rhodes,[c] and Louis Prima and published in 1946. This one has been covered so many times by so many notable artists over the years, it’s just an all-time classic, and definitely a must on this Valentine’s Super Bowl hybrid Monday.)
Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong – Cheek to Cheek (…what title could evoke romance and the violence of football more perfectly than this one? As to what happened in the NFL’s permiere championship dance tonight, the Cincinatti Bengals are gonna have to wait having lost ANOTHER close heartbreaker to the LA Rams, 23 to 20.)
Pod, socials, etc…
So now that we have the violence & romance out of the way, let’s get back to the new cuts. Up next we have Orion Sun to be followed by a big collab with Omar Apollo & Daniel Caesar, then Caroline Polachek will take us home for this block. We’ll talk about all there is to know about on the other side of the roundabouts, but for now THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
____
Continuing towards the end of the first half, The Drop don’t never stop broadcasting every single day between 8 & 10 on GFN. Danno here, keeping the levels right tonight and any night, awaiting the arrival of the fabulous Kat Bass for our 2nd hour Popcast feature. For now though let’s rewind & recap that last trio of tracks…
Orion Sun – dirty dancer (…this is a teaser single to the artist’s upcoming Getaway EP which drops on March 11. The song deals with feelings of insecurity and kind of turns them into a languid although rather shimmering composition. There’s also an accompanying video for the single, directed by Courtney Loo.)
Omar Apollo feat Daniel Caesar – Invincible (…one of the biggest announcements of the past week was that Omar Apollo is out with a new album on April 8 called Ivory, with this tune being the lead teaser. Here we see a great collab with Best Part singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar, a song that deals with love, sexuality, and the complexities therein. There’s also a beautiful video to accompany the tune if you wanna check that out on the great tube.)
Caroline Polachek – Billions (…after breaking out with the Pang LP in 2019, it seems the artist is taking a much more complex approach to her music, with last year’s Bunny Is A Rider being a prime example. Now we have Billions which just dropped last Wednesday. According to Pitchfork, Polachek debuted the track last year during her first live performance since the pandemic began, and she has readily admitted that she was trying to capture “the afterglow of a reopening.”)
Okay, so that’s almost halftime but prior to us hitting quadruple zeroes and the jump, we have a bit of dance music to take us home from Burial and Four Tet, which is by no means new but certainly new to anyone listening only digitally as Nova, a tune released in 2009 finally saw release digitally on all platforms as of last week, so we’ll let that glide us into halftime. This is The Drop on your New Muses Happy Valentimes Super Monday and that’s a wrap for the first half.
Burial x Four Tet – Nova

Part III

Hot-Take

Jennifer Lopez - Marry Me (Kat & Bastian Duet)
An early Valentine’s Day celebration! Ahead of the loved-up holiday, Jennifer Lopez shared the sweet, personal gift that boyfriend Ben Affleck made: a special remixed music video of her new single “On My Way.” Love is in the air, and I am choking on it.

Billie Eilish - my future
Footage of Eilish stopping her show for a struggling fan was up recently. During the incident, she said, "I wait for people to be okay before I keep going". From this, Kanye took the comment to be a reference to the Astroworld tragedy, and announced how he wont be performing at Coachella until she apologizes. Eilish replied, “Literally never said a thing about Travis. Was just helping a fan.”

Fresh Buns

half•alive - Everything Machine
02.11.22
This song is about a sick loved one, as he mentions cancer and pain and trying to support someone when you know the outcome isn’t going to be good. Breaks my heart..

Doja Cat - Celebrity Skin
02.11.22
A cover of the iconic pop-punk song “Celebrity Skin” by Hole, Doja Cat teams up with prolific pop-punk producers Travis Barker and Dark Waves for this track.

K.Flay - Good Girl
02.04.22
Adding both previous albums Inside Voices and Outside Voices, K. Flay came out with a fuller one with all the songs about self realization and love. Let me say, I connect with this song deeply.

Gayle - ur just lonely
02.04.22
Alright, Gayle came in with another banger. Now the song is originally "ur just horny", but we at GFN try to be clean with what we listen to. If you like this burtally honest fact track, we gotchu!

mxmtoon - mona lisa

Part IV

boy pablo & Cuco - La Novela
02.11.22
boy Pablo and Cuco share a new collaborative single, “La Novela”. In the five-minute ballad we see the two harmonize and exchange verses while 60s-inspired keyboards, guitars and drums float beneath their voices. It's in Spanish, but the melody tells it all.

Virginia To Vegas - amnesia
02.04.22
Toronto-based singer Virginia To Vegas kicks off 2022 with an 80’s-inspired three-song EP. All three of these songs were made remotely from ideas developed at home or in hotel rooms years ago. I'm amazed how artists work. I could never!!

*JAMIE - Pity Party
02.03.22
Described as her most expressive and descriptive song yet, "Pity Party" is a dynamic track moving past negativity and building your confidence by throwing yourself a pity party. Instead of typical love songs, I'm finding more about self love this year and I support it 100%!!

*Saweetie ft. H.E.R - Closer
02.10.22
Another promotional single for her upcoming album Pretty B* Music has arrived. Collaborating with the sexy H.E.R/ her, they sing about love with confidence! And are proposing to you with this sweet tune. Alright girls, send this to your crushes!!!
