The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

As broadcast March 21, 2023 with lots of regret.  Tonight we mark 20 years since the US invaded Iraq in what was dubbed "Operation Iraqi Freedom."  Obviously, it wasn't that, it was just another dumb war.  Moving onto the present, we had a lot of new tunes to get through today, with new albums out from Yves Tumor and Unknown Mortal Orchestra along with a slew of other new singles and announcements from the likes of Tash Sultana, Bedroom, and Phoenix.  Part 3 we got into the big pop stuff just out but then finished with the main event and our Fresh K Cuts Korean indie dossier, with a new album out from SE SO NEON's Hwang So-yoon, and tunes from Korean expat artists hanbee and Peach Luffe to check out as well.

Salt Cathedral – Strong Emotions

It is 20 hours past midnight and a new season dawns, my friends! Welcome to the show, it’s fantastic to still be here bumpin with you, and thank you as always for tuning in. Danno here once again, back at it for a new season of fresh cuts here on GFN, and we got a lot of said cuts to serve tonight, marked specifically as March 20, 2023. For those unfamiliar, our New Muses Monday showcases all our favorite new joints just out over the weekend, with parts 3 & 4 being big pop tunes and Korean indie & bubbling under K-pop respectively, and while it is a new season nothing has changed on the docket for the show, so all 5 weeknights we still got you like we did before. We got new singles & albums just out from Yves Tumor, Taylor Swift, Peach Luffe, Feist, and many more to showcase tonight, but we shall start the show 20 years ago on this date as a very important, very bad bit of history was set into motion by the powers that be. THIS is The Drop.

Facts
WAR – Slippin’ Into Darkness
- Hard to choose a song for this date to express my own emotions on the historical front, as it was on this date that Operation Iraqi Freedom was launched by the US, an invasion of the country that eventually toppled Saddam Hussein.
- Launched under, let’s face it, totally false pretenses and outright lies, the war that was going to happen no matter what was a costly abomination from every angle you wanna look at it.
- In protest on this date in 2003, Bruce Springsteen opened his show with a dour rendition of Born In The USA followed by Edwin Starr’s famed WAR.
- There’s a good series on Netflix if you wanna get the longer angle of the history called Turning Point: 9/11 and The War On Terror.
Phoenix feat Clairo – After Midnight
- This is a new version of a tune previously released on the veteran band’s latest album Alpha Zulu, which came out last month.
- Interestingly, in the band’s long history, this is only the 2nd featured artist they have every worked with, the first being Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, so not big on the collabs.
Salt Cathedral – Strong Emotions
- Obviously, the pandemic has affected all of us in one way or another over the past few years, and this song is for all of us feeling a certain way as a result.
- The song deals with being emotionally detached from everything as a result of the experience, which I myself have felt in the aftermath and I’m sure many out there do as well.
Leith Ross – Guts
- This is a new standalone single from the Ottawa-based artist, just out Friday.
- Ross says they’ve been a sensitive and overly artistic person since birth in their bio, and have since the age of 12 been writing songs about being sensitive and overly artistic.
Yves Tumor – Parody
Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Meshuggah

Part 2
Gretel Hanlyn – Easy Peeler
Feist – Borrow Trouble
John Mark Nelson feat James McAllister & CARM – Do It Again
Bedroom – Better Friends
Tash Sultana – James Dean
Spanish Harlem Orchestra – Escucha El Ritmo
Spanish Harlem Orchestra – La Banda

Facts
Gretel Hanlyn – Easy Peeler
- This is the latest from the artist who’s based in London.
- This song is part of the upcoming album from Hanlyn, which has been out for exactly one week since last Monday, and is titled Head Of The Love Club, so go give that a spin if you enjoyed.
Feist – Borrow Trouble
- This is the 4th single to drop from the Canadian singer-songwriter’s upcoming album called Multitudes.
- The artist says the song started out as a morality tale and morphed in the process of creation into a song being the sound of trouble itself. Multitudes drops in full on April 14.
John Mark Nelson feat James McAllister & CARM – Do It Again
- Originally out of the Twin Cities and now calling LA home, John Mark Nelson just dropped this new standalone last week, which deals with innocence, memory, and intimacy.
- Give this artist a shout if you’re not acquainted, it’s good stuff.
Bedroom – Better Friends
- For those unfamiliar, this is the duet of Noah Kittinger and Bennett Littlejohn of Hovvdy, and this single is part of their album coming out April 28 called Thread.
- This would be the band’s 4th career album after making their debut in 2012.
Tash Sultana – James Dean*
- This is the artist’s first single of the year thus far, although the song itself was written back in 2021.
- Sultana has a new EP ready to drop later this year that this song will feature on, but we’re still awaiting details as far as date and title on that.
Spanish Harlem Orchestra – Escucha El Ritmo
Spanish Harlem Orchestra – La Banda
- May 26, Seoul Jazz Festival.

Part 3 – Poppin’ Off!
Lana Del Rey – The Grants
Melanie Martinez – DEATH
Taylor Swift – All Of The Girls You Loved Before
Hozier – Eat Your Young
Sabrina Carpenter – Feather
Nijah feat Childish Gambino & KIRBY – Sticky
Manuel Turizo – Triste

Facts
Lana Del Rey – The Grants
- The presumably final single from Del Rey’s new album is here.
- The album called Did You Know There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard drops on Friday, and is Del Rey’s 9th career LP.
Melanie Martinez – DEATH
- This is the opening track to Martinez’s latest album PORTALS, which also drops this Friday.
- The song itself is about the feeling of connection that Martinez has with all those who have loved her, similar to the feeling many experience when a loved one dies.
Taylor Swift – All Of The Girls You Loved Before
- Just dropped last week as Swift goes on an excruciatingly frustrating and long-awaited world tour.
- This tune along with three others were put out simultaneously, long-rumored releases that were left on the cutting room floor from Swift’s most recent Lovers LP.
Hozier – Eat Your Young
- Inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy, this tune was teased last month with some hand-written lyrics and just saw the light of day on St. Paddy’s last Friday.
- The three song EP dropped as well last week, if you wanna check for more, and this is the title track.
Sabrina Carpenter – Feather
- This is a new tune that features on the deluxe version of Carpenter’s last album emails I can’t send.
- The album also features three other unreleased songs, and is out as of last Friday called emails I can’t send fwd.
Nijah feat Childish Gambino & KIRBY – Sticky
- This tune is off a new EP from Nijah called SWARM, just out last Friday.
- The EP is kind of a collab with KIRBY, who features on all the tunes therein as well.
Manuel Turizo – Triste

Part 4 – Fresh K Cuts
hanbee – number own
Chamsom – Cue Sign
Peach Luffe – Notice Me
109 – First Love
Suitz feat Kim Yu-jin – 우리 올해가 지나기 전에
So!Yoon! feat RM – Smoke Sprite
So!Yoon! – OUT (to be continued :)

Facts
hanbee – number own
- This is a Korean artist based in NZ who’s been on our radar both Monday and Tuesday nights here on The Drop.
- Jeong Hanbee as she’s truly named emigrated with her parents to NZ when she was one year old, and has a smattering of singles thus far in her young career.
Chamsom – Cue Sign
- Very excited about this new tune, as the veteran indie trio are back with this as of Feb 12.
- The band released a bit of a 7” with this tune, having both Korean and English versions of this song, along with the same on the flip tune called Snow Ball.
Peach Luffe – Notice Me
- Our good friend Peach Luffe aka Jong Lee is out with this single as of late last week.
- Interestingly, the Toronto-based Korean artist also put out two other singles of the same song, with slowed down and sped up versions also available.
109 – First Love
- True name Kim Chan-young with the Korean stage name of il kong ku, this is the artist’s latest single which dropped along with an instrumental version on Feb 25.
Suitz feat Kim Yu-jin – 우리 올해가 지나기 전에
- The song title itself means Before Our Year Is Over, and this is the latest single from the singer that I can’t find anything about aside from surface info.
- Interestingly, or maybe ironically, the Suitz put out a tune called Who Am I as his initial single, which I’m interested in finding the answer to.
So!Yoon! feat RM – Smoke Sprite
So!Yoon! – OUT (to be continued :)
- Can’t get enough of this solo album from SE SO NEON’s Hwang So-yoon.
- The album is called Episode1: Love, available everywhere as of last Weds.
