What is Type B Knitting?

Type B Knitting is a weekly knitting podcast for the Type B crafter. Sisters Veronica and Gosia chat about WIPs, yarn, test knits and the knitting projects that don't go as planned, because knitting is a journey, not about the finished garment. New episodes every Tuesday.

Welcome to Type B Knitting podcast, the podcast with two sisters who yap about knitting and our knitting journeys. And we do a lot of laughing on here too about our knitting journeys. Laughing at, laughing with. Honestly, it's 50-50 on that one. I'm one of the sisters Gosia. And I'm Veronica. And today, we kind of have been inspired to knit again. So we have a knitting update, how our projects are going. It's that time of year, while everything is, I feel like when the weather gets colder, our knitting urge to knit just like raises up from the dead. From the ground, it just comes up. It's like, okay, let's go. It's like, let's freaking go. That's where we are right now.

The inspiration has been woken up. It's literally like, um, the meme of like, I'm sleeping. And then it's like, oh, it's under 70 degrees outside. It's like, I'm away. Like, I'm ready to knit. My fingers are moving across this yarn and needles. I am ready. All right. Well, what are you working on? So I, for a little while, after working on that test knit, I haven't really been inspired or like wanting to work on anything. Kind of now, while we're talking about it getting a little colder, I, my hands want to do something. But thinking about the bingo, thinking about bingo. I haven't heard that name in years.

Literally. We should do a bingo update. Don't say bingo update to me, because I don't know what's going on in bingo. Don't say bingo update. Don't remind the viewers of bingo update, because I don't know what's going on with bingo. Bingo, bingo. I don't know. Bingo, bingo. Personally, I felt like the bingo was kind of nice of like, oh, I'm going back to it and be like, oh, I don't know what I want to work on, but I know I want to work on something. So it kind of like helping inspire. I say inspire loosely, because on that bingo, we have only have one whip at a time for one month, and also work until you have zero whips left.

Meaning I have to work on the mohair card again. I, I'm like, you know what, fine, I'll do it, right? I pulled it out thinking I had a lot more work, and I'm almost like mad at myself at how little I have left. Like, Veronica, I have so little, like. So it's a rap cardigan where like, I don't have sleeves yet, but like I can put it on like a vest, and the straps wrap around the body, and then you're supposed to tie it into a bow. I have it literally like, I can wrap the one piece all the way across my whole body. I can like start tying it, and I just have to knit like, let's say six more inches to make the bow part.

And then I just have to do sleeves, which I decided I'm going to switch to short sleeves, because I think they'd be like really cute, like doing a little like puff sleeve, or like some kind of like short, like frilly sleeve instead of like long sleeve. So it's really just like six more inches of like a strap, like a strap that's only like four inches long or something, and then doing the sleeves, and then the rest is done. So I'm like even more pissed off about it, than how like little I have. I took it out recently, I worked on four, so the pattern, like it's a lace pattern, and it is a four row repeat.

I did that one, I did that repeat once, and then I put it down. I'm like this is painful, I don't want to work on this. On the body, or did you do it on the arm? I still have to finish the strap, so I have like maybe like six more inches, so I have to like do that to like finish it off. So it's like long enough, and then I can start the sleeve. So the strap is still in that lace pattern, it's not just like a solid strap? No, I think if it was like stockinette, I would have like a little bit more fun with it, because it would go a lot faster. Hold on, let me like pull it up for you. Everyone has a project that's haunting them.

Gosha's is the mohair cardigan, mine is my two shack sweaters. Well one shack sweater, but at least they're finished. I mean yeah, but it was a pain to get through them. So like the straps, it's like it's very beautiful, and it's like kind of similar to pointel. It really is. Not exactly, but like lacy. So it's very cute, very trendy. It's by Vert and Rose, Zosha cardigan? Another Zosha cardigan? I'm pretty sure, I could also be wrong. So like I just have to do the strap, I have a lot of it done. Oh yeah, you do. Legitimately most of it. And that's the crazy part too. So like thinking about, I'm literally, I can put it on, I can wrap it around, and I just have to make enough to like tie it off.

Yeah, oh god. Gosha's dropping mohair everywhere, just stressing me out. Veronica's just watching me get tangled in it too. I think it's across your shoulder, girl. What is this? No wonder you're not working on it, you're stressing me out. Yeah, so it's like almost done. I just have to like finish off the swab. And then the sleeves. And then sleeves, and it's like a drop sleeve too, so I would just like have to finish it off with like a little bit. So yeah, so I'm like even more mad about it, because like talking about frogging this thing, it's like you have to frog a whole sweater. No, don't do that, that's crazy.

I joke whenever I say frog, that I'm joking. So does that mean you don't have to buy more mohair for it? No, I don't. Oh. I have two balls of yarn I'm currently working, and it's mohair, so it's gonna go a long way. Plus I have two more that are like full balls of yarn. So I have enough yarn, I thought I did it, well like I think if I do the long sleeves, I won't have enough. Right. So I don't think that's any longer the plan, I don't know. So yeah, working on this is such a pain. And I'm knitting it in a like a light, very, very light pink, cloudy like color, so it's very neutral, it'll like match a lot, like the intent is like over a dress, like a little like light layer.

Yeah, it's super cute. It's cute, but I'm just I'm tired of it. I've been working on this for like two years, I want it to be over, I want it to be done. Yeah, but I don't want to work on it. That's fair, that's very fair. But I mean, I mean, at least you're like doing shortcuts to like make it less work, right? True. You just need to do the strap and you're like almost done with it. And then really, it's just like a little bit of the sleeves because again, it is a drop shoulder. So like a lot it's like basically like a cap sleeve on Gosha right now. So like she would literally need to knit like two or three more inches and then like it would be a little short sleeve and it would be perfect.

Yeah, so that's the other like frustrating part is like it's so close to being done that it's almost like I just have to sit my butt down and just work on it and then I can do something fun like a stash bust because I have like other ideas. Yeah, my project. So remember how I said I was going to do the Tyra sweater and Gosha doubted me? Well, guess what? I did do the Tyra sweater because I wanted to stick it to Gosha. No, I actually do really want the sweater. Um, so I have basically the entire body done. I have, oh my god, that took you so little time. I'm so impressed. I want to see Veronica started this maybe like a week or two ago.

If? Yeah, I'm curious how long ago I started it. I think it was like the week before you went on vacation. So maybe three weeks ago. I went on vacation last week. And I think I got the yarn for it like the week before. I think you started it right before. Yeah, it's maybe three weeks. This girl did, did you really finish a body in a week and a half? Yeah. That's insane. You were, and this is cables too. Wow, that's really gorgeous. Thank you. So here's the tea with this, right? It's supposed to be like. It was going too well. Oh, it's not trust and belief. So I bought the drops cotton merino to work with it, which I think is like a, it might be like a sport weight.

And this called for, oh man, I don't even know. That's how much I don't pay attention to instructions really. I don't even know what was this was intended to be used with. So it's supposed to be knit in like five millimeters. I'm knitting it in four millimeters because in order to get gauge on worsted weight, I always have to do four millimeter instead of five. But did you do a gauge swatch on this? No, of course not. But you just have a vibe. Yeah, I just vibe with it. It's going to be a lot smaller. So I had to double up on the drops cotton merino because it was fingering. And I wasn't intending on doing that because I wanted it to be a thinner sweater.

So I was like, Oh, I'll just knit a bigger size with this. Like, I think it's figuring way. I honestly have no idea. Actually, let me look it up right now. Let me let me be a good podcast of drops cotton merino. Oh, this blue is really cute. Oh, no, it's supposed to be knit on four millimeter needles. It's a DK weight yarn slash worsted. Honestly, I think that's a lie. I'm gonna be honest, it's kind of thin. Um, anyway, but um, I didn't love how it looked like with only one of them. So I had to hold it double. And unfortunately, I only found this out after I ordered the yarn and I got it. So I had started it and I luckily I didn't start a lot of it.

I think I started like the first set of cables. Um, and then I was like, Oh, I hate how this looks. And then I doubled it up and it looks way better now. But that obviously meant I didn't buy enough yarn the first time. So I had to go back and buy more yarn. So I finished the body, right? It looks really good. I think it looks great. Um, so good. And then I did like a little bit. I started to do the ribbing and I was like, Oh, I kind of want it to be a little bit longer. And I'm like, I need to order more yarn anyway. So I was like, Okay, well, the body took me total, I think about maybe eight balls of yarn because I think it was like two balls of yarn per side.

And I think, wait, no. Oh, that's not good. I did my math really wrong. Because I bought, I think I bought 11 balls of yarn to begin with. And then I used to. No, there's no way. Hold on this. I'm lying. Sorry. Hold up. Linden hobby. What did I buy from you? Okay, order confirmation. Okay, I did. I bought 11. Oh my god. This is so bad. And you'll know why I bought 11. And I finished I just I'm like barely finishing the body right right now. I haven't even started ribbing this. And I ran out of yarn. So I was like, Oh, shoot, like I need to buy more yarn. And I'm like, Oh, I just have the sleeves left.

I can order five balls of yarn so that I have a 16 total and I'll be totally fine. I don't think I'll have enough yarn. I think I'm gonna have to do a third order. Because I'm like, this is I'm, we're going I'm going so rogue that like, at this point, I can't even use the pattern to gauge how much yarn I'm going to need. So yeah, I literally, I'm still leaning on the body. I'm almost done with the body. I'm going to start the ribbing like pretty soon. But I just attached two more balls of yarn. So left in my stash of this ball of yarn, there's four. And I still have to do the entirety of the sleeves, both of them.

So I'm like, I don't and the sleeves have tables. So like, that's it's not just stock net. Oh, cables probably eat up. Yeah, the cables eat up a lot of the yarn. So like, it's not just stock net. So like, typically, I'd probably be able to get away with only one ball, like, the equivalent of one ball of yarn per sleeve. But now I'm thinking I'm gonna have to put in another order. Yeah. And you don't have any yarn left. Like you used up all your yarn now. Well, I just got my new order in right now. So I got the additional five from the original 11. So I attached the two new balls of yarn. I'm almost done with the body.

I don't think it's going to take me like in the entirety of two balls of yarn, but I also have to do the collar too. So like, I think I'm gonna have to do another order, which is really important for like two balls of yarn just so annoying. But what are you gonna do? What are you gonna do? That is what type B knitting gets you is just poor planning and spending like 10s of dollars on shipping. And then not realizing that you like you thought you were good, you thought you did the math until talking about it out loud that you realize you need more ball of yarn. Yeah, so I don't know. Well, I'll keep you guys updated on this.

Also, another type B thing of me. So while I was actively running out of yarn, and I knew I was going to have to order more yarn, the way that this is knit is you knit like the entire back panel. And then you knit the shoulders, and then you knit the front, and then you have to seam it at the side. So you basically knit like a big open poncho and then you seam it at the sides. And because I was running out of yarn, I was like, I don't want to waste the yarn I have to seam this. So I used like a white to like seam it. And honestly, like, it's like you can kind of tell a little bit, like it peaks through a little bit.

But this is my other thing that I think might give you a heart attack. When I first got this color, I was like, Oh, I don't really love the color because it's a little darker brown than I wanted. Those are already freaking out guys. And I'm like, Oh, it's natural fibers. So I might bleach this at some point. I might be bleaching it. No, what you last told me. Veronica. Okay, context. I remember Veronica was like trying to, she was like actively like had the website up and she was like going to buy the yarn. And we were discussing which color she should buy. And it's kind of difficult because like online, you can't really see the color in person.

So you like have no idea. You just have to go off the color, right? So there's a color oatmeal. There's a color wheat. There's a color cream white. And then like these names where it could go like one way or another. So the two of us were looking at these colors and being like, Oh, okay, like you don't want stark white. You want like a little bit like creamy off white color, not like too beige if that makes sense. This yarn comes in beige before she even starts it. I'm like, Hey, maybe return this yarn and get the color you weren't intending. She's like, nah, I'm just gonna dye it. Yeah. And I'm like, okay.

And then now she's talking about bleaching it. Girl, this is going to disintegrate in your arms. Why? It's going to be literally fine. I'm literally not worried about it. That makes one of us. I feel like bleaching it would kind of be cool because I feel like it would give the cables a little bit more dimension. Like if it doesn't bleach all the way through, like it would kind of be cool to see like, you know, darker and lighter shades of whatever on this. I don't know. I feel like it'd be cool. I feel like no one's done it before. So I need to do it for science. And then if it looks horrible, I can just buy like a RIT dye and like a burgundy and just dye it burgundy.

And all is happy in the world. Okay. I don't hate your plan though. Yeah. I'm like, I honestly, and guys, we know this. I don't care if I can never wear this sweater. So I'm like, if I, it turns out horrible. There's no sweat off my back. I don't really care. I would love to have the sweater. Listen, I would love to have this sweater, but you know, the way that it's working looking right now, like me kind of, I'm kind of indifferent. I'm like, I really don't care. So that's, that's what I have to share on my project. Gosh, just too stunned to speak, I fear. I really am. Just when I thought I knew everything about this.

No. Also, okay. So when I connected the, well, these are just like edits I'm doing on the fly. Like when I connected and I seemed at the sides, I didn't like how long it was. So I like reconnected it. So now there's just like a tail on the outside of the sweater and there's also kind of like a big hole. And you know what? My knitting will never get mistaken for machine made and I'm okay with that. Hey, you know what? It's handmade and made with love. And I'll say it's handmade made with literally, there's like a whole look. So you can put a whole finger in. It's almost like a buttonhole. Yeah, it literally is just like a buttonhole.

I'm just gonna sew it up with like the tail. It'll literally be fine. No one will know. I'm not worried about it. I'm not worried about... Oh, it's on the other side too. That's crazy. I'm not worried about it too. You guys shouldn't be worried about it. That's my, those are my, that's my take on it. I feel like my resolution for next year, and I know this isn't gonna happen, but I feel like I should actually listen to a pattern all the way through and like not do my own mods. Because obviously, it's not turning out very well. I feel like you, I think you make that resolution with every pattern you do, and then halfway through the pattern, you're like, nah, I'm gonna do it different.

I know. I always end up that way. Okay, I would like to point out, I did send you a picture of a cable that I messed up, and I want to note that I did go back and frog it and fix the cable. This is true. But I'm telling you, there is a point in a project where like, I'm so far deep that like, anything could happen to this, and I don't care. I'll just keep going till it's done, you know? And like, there's like, I'm at that point where I'm like, the body's done. I don't care if there's button holes on the scenes. That's fine with me. I really don't care, you know? And like, on one side of it, like I didn't pick up the stitches correctly.

So there's like a little bit of like puckering or something like that. And I'm like, you know what? Literally, who cares? Like, do I care? No, I don't. Yeah, I feel like you did such a beautiful, good job on the cable part of it, that like, the side seams of it is like such a minor like, you know, yeah, it's like a detail of it that it's a side character, no one really cares about. That's how I'm taking it. Like the cables are the start of the show. These are background actors that I really don't care about. So like, who, I really don't mind that, you know, you're a little messed up and janky. It might, I think, you know, to a film buff, they'd be like, hold up, what the heck was that in the background?

And then they're analyzing it, right? But like, to the normal viewer, they're like, yeah, whatever. Honestly, I love that attitude. Do you follow patterns like exactly to the tee? Depends on the pattern and depends what I'm doing. I think majority of patterns, yes. But I think I'll make small edits, like, if there's like a bind off method, I like better if there's, you know, instead of like, let's say German short rows, like the turn and turn and wrap. Turn and wrap, yeah. Sometimes things like that. I think it was only recently, I feel I've been kind of going rogue on certain patterns of like, I don't want to do that.

Welcome to the dark side, friend. You want to hear something really funny too? What? I was thinking about how you're working on this Tyra sweater and I wanted to start working on also that pattern. What? Oh my god, I'll remake it with you. Don't worry, I probably won't like this one anyway. I'll do it with you. It's already becoming the neglected child, ready to ditch it. All the hope of this being a wearable sweater has gone out the window. We still have hope. But again, I remember like, the last time I talked to the podcast, I told them that I didn't like my cardigan number nine. Why? That's the red cardigan.

I wear it all the time. It's great. I love it. Sometimes we like, sometimes we don't. I mean, the weather gets hot and we don't want to knit and the weather gets cold and then we're knitting again. So yeah, you know what? I was on, I want to say I was on Pinterest. I kept seeing people add like hand embroidery of little, little skiers and snowboarders onto cream cabled sweaters. And I was like, oh Veronica's working on a cream cabled sweater. How cute would that be? To just sew, not sew in, but like to add in some cute little skiers. And a million years ago, not a million years ago, but a very long time ago, I made a quilt and the quilt was this like ski slope scene.

So I have drawn out really simple shaped skiers in like different shapes and things. So I could easily add it, but I thought that was, yeah, I thought that'd be like really cute. Yeah, that would be really cute. Maybe, hey, if this one doesn't work out, I can give it to you and you can test it out on it. Oh, we'll see if I get to that. There's so many other projects and also if this isn't unraveled or thrown into the trash or donated by the time I get to it. Exactly, exactly, exactly. No, if you want it, I'll keep it. That's exactly what happened to the Shaq sweater. Gosh, I was like, oh my God, don't do anything to that sweater.

Please keep it. And I'm like, I got you girl. Don't worry about me. And it's in my closet. I've worn it once before. Crazy. It's just really big. No, the way I sewed the seams on the armpits is crazy. I feel like that's not even that bad. I feel like it's the neck hole. Do you remember in Spongebob when Spongebob made the sweater out of eyelashes? And he's like, oh, I didn't know how big your head was so I used a watermelon. That's so funny. I love that. That's iconic. That's how it feels wearing that. That is iconic. Well, maybe something about your head was giving watermelon to me. Something about my own head, apparently, was giving watermelon because that was intended to be mine.

Maybe something about the pattern. I feel like maybe the Scandi girls just got bigger heads. No, I really think that pattern is literally written to be so oversized. Now that I look at pictures of what it's supposed to look like, it really is obvious that it's so crazy oversized it legitimately could be a sweater for Shaq. I think it just looks like that. But that's why I really want to remake it and just vibe it out on my own. But you're going to have to vibe out the pattern then on your own? No. Because the pattern, but think about it, the pattern that she uses is for this giant size. So you're going to shrink it?

Yeah, I'll just- Are you going to do it in a smaller- Smaller needle. Yeah, smaller needle size and like fingering or whatever. Yeah, and then it should be fine. To swink it. Yeah, I just love it so much. I want it. But yeah, I think it's- Make the other one instead. The Frid one. Oh my god, I know that one's super cute. I do really want to make that. I literally added it to mine. Maybe we make that one together. That would be cute. I think making something at the same time would be really fun. We should do that. Okay, we gotta close up this episode. So that's our update for what we're working on.

We'll let you know how dyeing the cable sweater goes. Stay tuned for bleaching. And if she needs to buy more yarn for this yarn-hungry sweater to no fault of the pattern writer, all my mistakes. Never the pattern writer always has our own problems. Yeah. And find out if I finally finished the mohair card again, where we'll throw a little party if I ever get it done. That's right, we will. All other updates will be on our Instagram. Type B knitting pod. Check it out. We'll try to update on there. We also love to post memes regarding our progress Yeah, thank you guys.
