Lighter Than You Started is a daily podcast offering gentle reflections on the news, the noise, and the small human moments that shape our days. With wry humour and quiet honesty, it’s not about fixing you, just about ending each day feeling a little lighter than when it began.
Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter Than You Started. It's Tuesday and today I'd like to talk about questions. Not the ones other people ask you. The ones your own mind quietly ask throughout the day. What if this goes wrong?
Keith:Why did they say that? Should I have handled that differently? What does this mean? What happens if Most of these questions arrive without invitation. One moment you made a cup of tea the next your mind's presented you with another mystery to solve.
Keith:Another possibility to consider. Another uncertainty to examine. There's always very human about that. Questions feel important. They capture our attention.
Keith:They create the impression that somewhere just beyond our current understanding there's an answer waiting to be discovered. And because of that we naturally start searching, thinking, analysing, exploring, Trying to satisfy every question that appears. But here's something I've been reflecting on recently. Not every question deserves an answer. Some questions simply reflect uncertainty.
Keith:Some reflect curiosity. Some reflect anxiety. And some are little more than passing mental habits. The difficulty is that they all sound equally convincing. Your mind rarely tells you which questions are genuinely helpful and which are simply creating more noise.
Keith:Choose often has a way of bringing these questions into sharper focus. You're busy enough for your mind to multitask. Moving between conversations. Planning ahead. Reflecting on what has already happened.
Keith:Trying to anticipate what comes next. And all the while the questions keep arriving. What if? Why? Should I?
Keith:Did I? The temptation is to answer every single one. But imagine if someone knocked on your front door 20 times today. You probably wouldn't invite every visitor inside. You'd decide which conversations were worth having.
Keith:Perhaps your thoughts deserve the same wisdom. Not every question needs entertaining. Not every uncertainty needs investigating. Sometimes a question can simply remain unanswered. Not because you've given up on it.
Keith:Not because you don't care. But because you've recognised that answering it wouldn't change anything today. There's a quiet freedom in that because every unanswered question creates space. Space for your attention to return. Space for your energy to settle space for today to become today.
Keith:You don't need to answer every question your mind asks. You don't need to explain every uncertainty. You don't need to satisfy every what if' before you're allowed to enjoy this moment. Some questions can simply pass through like birds flying overhead. You notice them, you acknowledge them and then you let them continue on their journey without following them.
Keith:So if today your mind offers you another question before automatically searching for the answer perhaps gently ask yourself something else. Is this a question that generally needs answering or is it simply a thought passing by? And perhaps that one small pause is enough. Today's thought for you. You don't need to answer every question your mind asks.
Keith:Thank you for sharing this moment and as always I hope you end today feeling lighter than you started. Jo gently and I'll see you tomorrow on the flip side. Lighter Than You Started is a think of something publishing production.
