it's real, it's fresh. Well, welcome her. That's for sure.
Speaker 1 0:35
For sure. Welcome to the stand outdoors, the show where faith and the great outdoors come together. I'm Dave Baker, along with the founder of the standout doors, Mike Hayes, and today we're talking about five tiny tips. I don't know he says tiny, but I think they're good tips, that they're big tips that might just help you get the biggest buck of your life. Right now we want to talk a little bit about the history of the standout doors. Maybe you don't know anything about the standout doors.com, or the standout doors, Mike, why did you start this whole thing? What was the impetus to get you going?
Speaker 2 1:07
Well, I knew I wanted to serve the Lord and I wanted to do what he wanted me to do. And as it began to think about that verse that says that if you delight in the Lord, he'll give you the desires of your heart, I I started thinking, Well, what desires has the Lord given me? And my two biggest passions is, you know, the ministry, you know, reaching out, helping people live for Christ, find Christ, live for Christ, and then the outdoors and and I know that God can use the outdoorsman to be an incredible impact for his furthering of his kingdom, and that he will. He loves to use the smaller things to confound the bigger things. And even though it's a small segment of society, God loves those odds, you know. So we can reach, we can reach the world. We can read, we start with our country, maybe, but outdoor people are very spiritually minded, and so we can, I think, reach them, you know, with the gospel of Christ, through, you know, videos, through hunting videos and and just the outdoor, the whole camaraderie that comes with it. You know,
Speaker 1 2:21
Well, Mike, we all need help. Even though we've been in hunting for 3040, years, we all need help every year. I know I do to make our our hunt successful. And you've come up with five helpful you call them tiny
Unknown Speaker 2:37
help. They are tiny, but they're so helpful.
Unknown Speaker 2:40
And I think Eden did a video on this, right? Yeah,
Speaker 2 2:43
you can actually go on our website, the standout doors.com, and look it up. There is a video on it. But these are just five tiny tips that have helped me, you know, get the big buck instead of losing it, and I've lost a lot of them, but that's how you learn these tips, right? I've dropped things. Learn from my mistakes. Please don't make these mistakes, because you know you'll lose sleep. Number one is a simple one. Turn off your phone. Have a little sign. Oh, true. Get a little sign in your hunting room, wherever you get dressed, before you go out. And just, I just got a little piece of paper sound turn off your phone, yeah. And you know how many times that thing has gone off when I'm watching this big boy come in and he don't come in anymore, you know? And the second thing is rubber boots. Now, a lot of people don't like to wear rubber boots, and I wear the tall ones, you know, some up past the calf. And the reason I do is because rubber it conceals the scent, you know, it holds it in where your leather will not do that, even though leather might be more comfortable and it's easier walking. You know, it's going to let out your scent everywhere you walk, and so rubber will keep it in there. And I've had, you know, I remember this one big seven pointer that walked, I had to walk right over the trail he usually took to get to my stand, and it's the only access that I had. And sure enough, he comes right in, just like I planned. He would. I planned everything perfect, except I wore leather boots. And when he came in and he smelt my boots, you know, he smelt my feet, yep, and see I don't have stinky feet. I saw that look, Dave, but my wife says, I don't have stinky feet. But anyway, he smelled and he got all panicky, you know, you can tell, and he was right under me. I mean, he's literally straight below me, and I can't move. And then I think he's going to bolt. I'm going to. Have to try to draw on him. And have you ever tried to draw, you know, pointing your bow straight down? It's almost impossible. You don't even use those muscles. And I couldn't get it back. I had to lift up the bow, you know, more level, and then draw it and then bring it back down. He's not standing for all that, and he took off. So anyway, rubber boots. I highly recommend hunting in rubber boots. The next thing, believe, not very little, but it's so important, and that is gloves. Camo gloves. Now you're going to have to shoot with them, because it's hard. You know, to you got to get used to it. You don't want some thin ones. I like the weather ones, and it depends on the weather. You know, you got, I got some wool ones that I cut the fingers out, yeah. But the reason I say that is because deer had this incredible acute ability to pick up movement almost 360 degrees around them, because the way their eyes sit in their head. But they have this incredible ability to pick up movement of any kind. And you when you see, if you watch the video, as just my hands are exposed, and as I put them across my body, as I reach up to scratch my nose or whatever it might be, it's just white flash. You know that they will pick up. And I've seen them pick it up, especially the smart doe out of the sides of their eyes. Oh, they're incredible. And so just having all that covered up with, you know, dark camo, you know, site type stuff will go a long way, and you won't spook that deer of a lifetime. Let
Speaker 1 6:36
me ask you a question before you go on. I have practiced this over the years. I don't know if it's proper hunting technique or not, but if I do have to move for some reason, whether positioning or grab the bow, I have found, and I don't know if this is you found to be true, I try to move when the deer are moving, if they start to put their head down and take a step, if I have to move, and I'm I'm fully camouflaged, but I try to move when they're moving,
Speaker 2 7:05
right? Yeah, that's, I think that's true, and I do that too. And I also, you know when I usually, you know when to draw on a deer you want to draw when their head is behind a tree, or when you can't see their eyes at all. You know they're totally turned away from you looking down or something. And, yeah, you try to do that, because I've drawn and they, they picked me up, and then they bolt, you know? And, you know, that's the one thing that makes it a challenge with archery, is you got to draw the bow back. Now,
Speaker 1 7:32
let me ask you this. Okay, so if, if a lone bucks coming, and he's moving, and you're, you're trying to make adjustments while he's moving, that's one thing. The other scenario that I found is very difficult, is when you have a host of does around, hmm, the bucks, the bucks coming in to there, and you got some jittery dough. Because, you know, in every bunch, yeah, there's some jittery dough. Smart one, every fly that comes by, she's freaking out, right? So what kind of strategy, strategy to do you? Do you employ when it comes to these does do you just kind of wait to the last minute to to draw like, do you wait like, to the very last when heat quarters and he's ready? Do you come up quick, or do you kind of come up slow and get ready? Like,
Speaker 2 8:18
yeah, I usually have the bow in a position where, you know, I don't draw it until I'm ready to shoot because, you know, I can't hold it that long, so I don't, I don't draw it too soon. Do you draw
Speaker 1 8:32
when he's quarter, when he's starting to quarter, or do you draw when he's quartered?
Speaker 2 8:37
Well, I usually will draw if I see him, you know, going into that, that broad side, side, right? Yeah, because I'll shoot them broadside. I don't like to shoot them when they're quartering to me, because that target is so small, it's ridiculous. And you'll probably be tracking them forever and maybe not. Do you
Speaker 1 8:55
shoot if they're Will you ever shoot if they're moving just slightly moving.
Speaker 2 9:00
Yeah, maybe slightly, I mean, but usually it's because I'm letting go, why they start moving again. But I usually, I usually will let out a bleed man and try to stop them, yeah, because I don't like him moving. I shot one beautiful buck. I mean, he was huge and and he was moving. And when I shot, I didn't lead him enough, and I ended up, I mean, he took off pretty fast, and I ended up hitting him in the hip, perfect height, but right in the hip, sound like I hit a tree. And, you know, right in the thigh area, you know. And he, you know, I know. Of course, I never got him and followed the blood trail forever. But he wasn't immortal wound. He was a big old buck, but, but, yeah, I wait till they stop. Okay, but get. Getting back to these five tips. This, this little another, talking about their acute ability to pick up movement. It's another thing I do is, is I'll. Have one of those quick release quivers on my bow. Because when I get up on my tree stand, I like to take it off of my bow and hang it, yeah, you know, on the tree, on a little hook, or whatever same Yeah. And because, as you're like I said, I like to hold that bow in front of me, getting it ready, and if I'm moving it around those fletchings that are usually very bright, you know, because you want to watch the flight of your arrow. You know, there's like, you know, there could be four to five arrows on there. You don't, you know, you don't want all that whiteness again, flashing right and causing them to to look even when you grab your bow. That's a big move. Yeah, you know, a lot of times, you know, you don't have time to grab it when they're way out there, right? Times, you see them pretty close, but you still got to get that bow in your hand and anything going against, you know, you don't fletching or whatever. Yeah. And then the last thing is a little thing with clothing that I, that I use, it's, it's wearing one of these Dickie turtleneck Dickies, you know, it's not a full shirt, yeah. And that has been so helpful, because they can keep you really warm, like, usually when you're when you're going into the stand, you'll get overheated. And a lot of times I do get overheated, you know, just by climbing. And the beauty of that dick I can just rip it right off. And I'd take my shirt on, my coat off, my shirt off. I can just take that turtleneck right off. And then if I get cold again, after two hours of sitting in, you know, one degree weather or whatever, I can put it back on, you know. And so the Dickey is really, really helpful out there in the cold weather, you know. So that's my tiny five, five tiny tips that could be the difference between getting that big buck and not getting that big buck. I
Unknown Speaker 11:49
think they're good ones.
Speaker 1 12:00
Well, Mike, you know, hunters, we spend a lot of time in the woods. We see the glory of God's creation. And I know, much like yourself, we've reflected a lot in our spiritual lives in the woods. It's been amazing, yeah, and we always like to have kind of a spiritual application during our podcast, and we've talked about five tips that might help you get a big buck. Well, we have some tips that might help you in your spiritual walk as well.
Speaker 2 12:28
Yeah, and there's, of course, a lot we're trying to kind of narrow it down to five tiny tips. There's tons to stay strong in Christ and but, you know, it's more like 5000 but, but these are very helpful to me, I know, and I know you too, Dave, yep. But the first one is, I find that, you know, a daily reading of Scripture, you know, and, and just having your, we call it devotionals, you know, devotional time with the Lord where. And I like to do it first thing in the morning before I do anything. And, you know, sometimes I want to check those, those trail camera pictures first, you know, but then I go, No, no, I'm going to talk to the Lord first. I'm not going to look at those pictures first. I got 100 pictures to look at, but, but, but it's true. I want to, I want to start my day out right, and that's by reading His word and and praying. And when you're praying to God, you know, David kind of gave us a way to to approach God. He says, Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. So it's a picture of walking into the presence of God. And I believe that that God, that's how he wants us to approach him every day, as we come to Him, you know, in prayer, in our devotional time. Now he wants to be, you know, he wants us talk and having a conversation with God all day long, right? But as we go to him in this time of devotions, we can enter his courts with thanksgiving. So the first thing you want to do is just think about what you're thankful for, and just be thanking God and just praising him for who he is. And then you enter his courts with praise, and you just praise Him for who He is, for his you know that you can call him Abba, Daddy, you know. And yet he's the creator. He holds the universe in his hands, you know, all these things, and this gets puts everything in perspective. I remember driving to work one day, and I didn't do this because I didn't have time, woke up late, hit the snooze button one too many times, you know. And I'm driving to work, so I said, I'm going to be I'm going to pray to God. And I was really stressed over something at work, right as I'm going into work. Here I am driving, and I'm just entering, entering his courts with thanksgiving. I'm entering his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. And all of a sudden I felt my stress just going down. It was amazing. And it was like I'm seeing I was rising. Up seeing things from his perspective, you know. And these things seem so minuscule, yeah, you know. And it was amazing. It was an actual time when I actually felt that, and I saw the importance of doing that before your day start morning, yeah. Second thing is just always making sure you have a grateful heart. We want to complain Amen, all the time, all the time, and it's such a temptation, yeah? And yet, God loves a grateful heart, yeah? I mean, this is something that's so precious to him, and we have so much to be grateful for. Because if you think about it, anything above hell is grace plus. I mean, think about it's true, you know. So yeah, having this grateful heart, and if you're not, ask the Lord to help you with it, because he will, you know. The third thing is, it can't always be about me, you know? You know it can't. I can't be thinking, Okay, I'm going to be growing, I'm going to be getting spiritual. I'm going to be, yeah, we got to think about helping others, and believe it or not, that's what will help you. And so God wants us to figure out what, what are my gifts, what are my talents that he's given me, that I can share with my brothers and sisters in Christ and with co workers and family, anybody, they don't have to be believers. You know, they can be anybody that you're just you're just giving of yourself. And
Speaker 1 16:33
as married couples, Mike and I are, and you may not be, but that's one way that we serve the Lord, because we serve Christ if we serve our wives, that's the Bible says we honor the Lord if we honor our wives. And so serving our wives is a is a big deal for married men, right? That's That's all. That's a huge thing to think about. How can I serve my wife today in the best way possible, to honor her and the things that she loves and the things that she loves to
Speaker 2 17:03
do, matter of fact that that's also the one of the first things I pray for, you know, in my morning devotions, that I will be the best husband I can be for her. And that, and that, of course, affects me too, you know? So, yeah, it's a circle type, yep. All right. The next thing is to stay strong, we got to have fellowship, right? You know? I mean, that's, that's the way God made us. We need each other, you know, the the eye can't say to the ear, I don't need you, because where would the hearing be, and vice versa, right? Right? You know, Paul made that pretty clear. That's how God made us, you know, we need each other. You know, even, like you said, our wives, God's made it really clear, it's not good for man to be alone, and that's why He created man. And it's so interesting how He created man. And he didn't just create them together at the same time, he wanted man to feel that, yes, you know, and then watch God provide it for him. And that's the same way, even with our fellowship with other believers, we need to be encouraged. We need to hear the word. We need to see what other people are going through here from the so we need a community of believers that we can connect with,
Speaker 1 18:18
yeah, whether it's a church Bible study, right? An online group, whatever it is you need to have a group of people, just friends, to get together in a regular basis and sit and talk about spiritual things, right? It makes a huge difference in your walk with the Lord,
Speaker 2 18:32
right? You're not alone, and that does make a big difference. Now, the last thing is going to sound like a strange one, but what I have found in my life is that evangelism helps me to grow, and it's amazing how it works that way, because, you know, God did call us all to be His ambassadors. And Matthew 28 talks about the great commission that we're to go out and we're to make disciples. We're to share our faith and and that's got to be a part of our life. And what I find when that's missing, it seems like the others don't have as much meaning, because when I'm out there in the world and I'm willing to take a stand for Christ, not to use my the name of our ministry, too much, but no, but we want to take a stand for Christ. You're going to get beat up. There's no doubt about it. People are going to say you're stupid, and they're going to tell you, how can you believe in that nonsense or whatever. And then guess what? Now my fellowship becomes that much sweeter, right? Also, my prayer life is increased because I'm praying that I'll have answers from my friends that are that aren't believing because, because I know hell is real. I know that that Jesus is real. I know that these things are real, but they're not getting it. Lord, how can I. Give me the right words to say, help me to show them the love I need to show them. To show your love. All of a sudden, it enhances all the other areas of my life, because I'm out there willing to take a stand for Christ, to share the gospel with other people and and you'll find that too, that every other aspect of your Christian life will become so much more effective and profound and incredibly beautiful because you're not ashamed of the gospel of Christ.

But more than that, the targeting truth Bible studies, Mike are a great opportunity for men's groups or any kind of group, to get together and sort of watch some great videos and learn about the
Speaker 2 21:17
Lord. Yeah, and that's what really we're all about, we want to see, you know, especially men, but men and women of the outdoors to take a stand for Christ or play little word play there about taking a stand, right? But we know in order to take a stand, we have to be equipped with the Word of God. And so we've created these Bible studies for outdoorsmen, and have a video you watch, you know, of an episode of a hunt and then five discussion questions. You have a leader's guide. You have a participants guide. It's all right there for you can do it as a men's group. You can do it as a devotional. You can do it with your kids. You can it's just a wonderful thing. But you'll be when we go into the scriptures, you go into the scriptures, it's a it's a very good discussion time of that three minute segment in the video where I share something at the end of every video, hunting video. So it's a way to get equipped. And then when you go back into your zones of influence, you'll be impactful for Christ.
