The Glass Frog – The See-Through Guardian
Hi! I am Aimee and I am so glad you are here!
Hey! Have you seen any cool animals lately?
Grab your magnifying glass, explorers! We are trekking into the misty cloud forests of Central and South America to find a tiny frog that is practically invisible!
Today, we are talking about the delicate, the transparent, the astonishing... Glass Frog!
While the top of this frog is bright green to match the leaves, its belly is Transparent. This means the skin and muscles are see-through, like a clean window! This is a form of Disruptive Coloration. When the sun shines through the leaf the frog is sitting on, the frog's silhouette disappears because the light goes right through its body. This makes it almost impossible for a hungry bird to see where the frog starts and the leaf ends!
Glass frogs are Arboreal (ar-BOR-ee-ul), which means they spend their entire lives in the trees and rarely ever touch the ground. They are also Nocturnal, which is why they have such huge, golden eyes that face forward. This gives them Binocular Vision, helping them judge distance perfectly so they can pounce on tiny crickets in the dark rainforest night.
In many animal families, the moms watch the eggs, but for Glass Frogs, the dads are the heroes! After the eggs are laid on the underside of a leaf, the dad stays nearby for weeks. This is called Parental Care. If a hungry wasp tries to eat the eggs, the dad frog will actually kick the wasp away with his powerful back legs! He also drinks water and then empties his bladder onto the eggs to keep them from drying out.
How do they get so clear? Scientists discovered that when Glass Frogs sleep, they take 90% of their red blood cells and hide them inside their liver! Since blood cells are what give animals color, removing them from the rest of the body makes the frog look like a piece of glass. This amazing way their body works is called their Metabolism (muh-TAB-uh-liz-um). When they wake up to hunt, the blood cells flow back out, and the frog becomes less see-through.
Because Glass Frogs have such thin, sensitive skin, they breathe and drink through their bodies. This makes them an Indicator Species. They act like a "thermometer" for the forest. If the air or water has any pollution, the Glass Frogs will get sick first. If you see plenty of happy Glass Frogs, it tells scientists that the whole Ecosystem is healthy and clean.
Our trek through the cloud forest is finished! The Glass Frog teaches us that there is beauty in being exactly who you are—even if everyone can see right through you!
Stop right there, explorers! It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for... put on your thinking caps, because it is time for the Wild Wisdom Challenge! Let’s see if you can "see through" these tricky questions!
What word describes an animal that lives mostly in trees? Arboreal!
What kind of vision helps frogs pounce on bugs in the dark? Binocular Vision!
Where do Glass Frogs hide their blood cells while they sleep? In their liver!
Okay! It is time for some true or false questions...
True or False: You can see the Glass Frog's heart beating through its tummy. (True!)
True or False: Glass Frog dads use their legs to kick away predators. (True!)
True or False: Glass Frogs are Diurnal. (False! They are Nocturnal.)
Great work, explorers! I am so proud of you! You’ve got a curious mind, and that is your greatest tool for adventure. Now, let’s hop to it with our favorite froggy jokes:
What happened to the frog’s car when the parking meter expired? It got toad!
Where do frogs keep their money? In a riverbank!
I hope you enjoyed the Glass Frog today! If there is another animal you want to learn about—maybe one that smells like buttered popcorn or one that can regrow its own tail—send me an email at aimee@animalswithaimee.com.
