Greetings and Welcome to The 405 Coffee Break with O.K. Solberg
New episodes tend to air over the local KMMR radio station @ 5 minutes past 4PM each M-F. And have been doing so, nearly every week since Sept 2018.
I'm D.J. Rasmussen, O.K.s friend since junior high, possibly your neighbor & this websites maintainer, whom strives to get each episode's show notes written, the transcript proofed and the audio posted to the internet within a few hours of that days KMMR air time. NOTE: recently been publishing most new releases by 4:30PM.
Thanks for visiting and I hope you enjoy the time we can spend together.
I want to again welcome you to The 405 Coffee Break. Guys, get you a cup of coffee, glass iced tea, bottle of water. Let's see what's happening.
OK Solberg:Spring wheat $6.14 a bushel. 550lb steer calf, for fall delivery, $4.85 to $5.10 a pound. And a 100lb fat lamb in Billings at $3.20 a pound. But guys there's more, much more.
OK Solberg:I'm already laughing and you haven't even heard what I'm laughing about. Okay. Have you ever made a knee jerk reaction? That's just funny. Don't rush away from that question until you ponder it thoroughly. Have you ever had a knee jerk reaction?
OK Solberg:Of course, upon careful examination, all of us have to admit we have. Sure. For example, hanging up the call if it's an unknown caller, liking a post from a close friend before you even read it, ducking when a bird hits your windshield, grabbing candy at the cash register while waiting in line, or probably my favorite, leaving a store if the checkout line looks too long.
OK Solberg:So on Wednesday, I was thinking of knee jerk reactions, which caused me to think of its origin. Do you know its origin? I'm giving you a little time to think. Where did they get the term knee jerk reaction? Come on down. You're the next contestant on the answer is right. Five seconds now. Think. Think. Think.
OK Solberg:That annoying buzzer is gonna ring if you don't answer. Of course, if we think about it, it all came from a doctor examining you, and they took their reflex hammer, a small little rubber mallet. You had to cross your legs, and they would tap near the kneecap and the leg automatically pops up. Right?
OK Solberg:If two young kids knew about this procedure and they were boasting to each other and the leader of the pack says, you know, I'm so good. I'm not gonna let my knee jerk when he taps it with a mallet. Well, guess what? Good luck. Because if everything is firing on all cylinders, it's gonna happen whether you want it to or not.
OK Solberg:So once we ponder to this depth on the subject, don't you wonder what in the world could they find from doing this? What's the purpose? Good question. Well, believe it or not, it was a great diagnostic procedure by tapping the patellar tendon just below the kneecap they trigger an involuntary loop that travels up to your spinal cord and back down to your thigh muscle bypassing your brain entirely.
OK Solberg:If your knee jerks normally it signals good integrity of lower spinal cord especially L2 L3 and L4. Now if it doesn't jump like normal, it could indicate a lower motor neuron lesion. And for the rest of it, well, well, we'll just ask the doc about it. That's her department. But I find this interesting.
OK Solberg:Did you hear it triggered an involuntary loop that travels up to your spinal cord and back down through your thigh muscle bypassing your brain entirely? Did you hear that? What connection can we make? Did you listen this week?
OK Solberg:Remember on Tuesday, I talked about involuntary autobiographical memory? Where my friend Mike heard the Harley start up and that sound triggered an involuntary action that made him remember his youth, his freedom, and his passion.
OK Solberg:Far out. Right? So I say it carefully here and bear with me. I'm smiling. Mike had a knee jerk reaction. Now isn't that interesting? We're normally we hear that phrase and it refers to something bad or negative or wrong.
OK Solberg:Here involuntary autobiographical memory is a good thing, a great thing. Actually it's safe to say it's a marvelous thing. So here's what we gather from our study today. Just to say he had a knee jerk reaction doesn't necessarily mean it's bad.
OK Solberg:For when it comes to IAM, it most certainly is the opposite. And therefore in the future, if you hear me say he made a knee jerk reaction, well, you can understand that I might actually be paying you a compliment. What about that then?
OK Solberg:Listen to what it says in Romans 7:15 For I do not understand my own actions, for I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Romans 7 verse 15.
OK Solberg:There's one of the negative side effects that seems rather fitting for a knee jerk episode.
OK Solberg:So until next time, as you go out there, remember now, don't be bitter.
