The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Tonight we mark an unfortunate bit of overenthusiasm from Florence Welch at Coachella to open the show, then it's all the indie you can stuff in your filthy maw with our Under The Radar debut with Kat Bass!

Show Notes

As broadcast April 12, 2022 with plenty of indie healing for your podcast experience.  Tonight we start the show marking this date in 2015 at Coachella, where a rather overenthusiastic Florence Welch dove off the stage and broke her ankle.  However, to her infinite credit, she did perform the rest of the tour although bound to a chair, which most artists would not do.  This evening also marked Kat Bass taking over the reigns of our Under The Radar indie weekly, with choice selections for the majority of the gig.  Cuts from Wet Leg, POND, and Maggie Rogers were the highlights, but there's so much more inside if you take the safe dive with us.

Part 1
Florence + The Machine – My Love
Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – My Echo
Maggie Rogers – That’s Where I Am
Wallice – 90s American Superstar
SOAK – purgatory
TOPS – Perfected Steps

Facts
Florence + The Machine – My Love
- The 2nd single to Florence Welch and the automaton band’s 5th studio album Dance Fever, which drops May 13.
- However, it was on this date in 2015 that Florence Welch broke her foot leaping off the stage at Coachella. For the next several weeks, she sits during performances, per doctor's orders.
Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – My Echo
- This is the third single to the Aussie band’s upcoming album Endless Rooms, due out May 6.
- Written during one of the extended lockdown periods that Melbourne experienced in 2020, the track tackles themes of claustrophobia, anxiety and the damaging effects of a reliance on technology.
Maggie Rogers – That’s Where I Am
- This tune was released with a crazy video which is set in New York and totally cinematic in scope. Rogers is currently at grad school at Harvard, but did find time to rope in David Byrne from Talking Heads to feature in the visuals.
- The artist is also out with a new album called Surrender July 29.
Wallice – 90s American Superstar
- This is the title track to the upcoming EP from the on-the-rise indie rocker, and it’s funny how this song evolves, with Wallice explaining to NME "The chorus makes it a breakup song, and the verses make it a diss track,” so that’s basically the breakup cycle in a nutshell, right?
- The EP drops in full May 6.
SOAK – purgatory
- This is a teaser single to the upcoming album, titled If I Never Know You Like This Again.
- For those unfamiliar, this is the music project of Bridie Monds-Watson, better known by their stage name SOAK, a singer-songwriter from Derry, Northern Ireland.
- The album drops in full May 20
TOPS – Perfected Steps
- A favorite band project of ours out of Montreal right here with their latest. This is the initial single to the band’s new EP out May 10 called Empty Steps, and the band’s Jane Penny explained to Stereogum that the song is about, “‘Perfected Steps’ is about some right wing aging loser clinging to their glory days, values out of sync with reality.”

Part 2
almost monday - sunburn
Will Joseph Cook - Little Miss
Alexander 23 - Crash
The Regrettes - Nowhere
Yot Club - u dont kno me
Gracie Abrams - Block me out

Facts

almost monday - sunburn
- almost monday are an American indie pop trio based in San Diego, California. “sunburn” has all the makings for the song of the summer; a sizzling title and funky guitar licks, it's a definite banger alright. The song proclaims the spirit of a summer fling with the lyric “You’ll always be that sunburn on me.”

Will Joseph Cook - Little Miss
- Will Joseph Cook is back with his new single, ‘Little Miss’.The track compliments the earlier release, ‘4AM’, with its minimal sound but builds with a joyful beat. Listening to his latest work, I think, Cook remains authentic to his style of music.

Alexander 23 - Crash
- This is what the artist says about his newest single. "You can break down getting over someone into three parts by saying how you are "over them". The first time you say it is a lie, and you know it, but you’re ready to start trying. The second time you say it, you’re starting to believe yourself, but you're still compromised. The third time you say it, congrats you really did it. “Crash” is a story about somewhere in between the second and third time."

The Regrettes - Nowhere
- "Where’s the happiness that I thought I’d feel today?" wonders Lydia Night on today's song, Nowhere. The band has definitely changed sounds a bit, but is keeping their teen relevance anxt to the core. I've haven't heard any news, yet I hope with this new album that there's a new tour.

Yot Club - u dont kno me
- Yot Club is a project started from Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The band is twenty-two year old Ryan Kaiser, writing and recording everything. Ryan’s sound has been consistent since he began releasing music in 2019 with warm guitar leads, analog synth melodies, mixed with light pads. A pretty chill guy, but I can't say for this newest single!

Gracie Abrams - Block me out
- Gracie Abrams wonders if others can see past the old her on “Block Me Out,” a single presumed to be taken from her debut album. The lyrics are quite silence breaking, sharing the truth about how could think about oneself.

Part 3
Chloe Moriondo - nice pup
Vance Joy - Clarity
Barrie - Quarry
Sevdaliza - High Alone
BLUE ROOM - hope everything finds their color
Lizzy McAlpine ft. FINNEAS - hate to be lame

Facts

Chloe Moriondo - nice pup
- Nice pup is the second track on Chloe Moriondo’s 2022 EP, “puppy luv”. Although lyrics of this song are written in the perspective of a dog, it’s a metaphor for the singer and their feelings. They feel as if they do everything they can to show loyalty to their partner, but still doesn’t get treated in an adequate way.

Vance Joy - Clarity
- “It’s very upbeat and poppy,” Joy explained of the single in press release. “Dan Wilson says if there is a song you might be a bit shy about because it feels poppy or makes you feel uncomfortable because it’s saying something really directly that’s probably the single. I got that feeling from ‘Clarity.’" I say, " you do you boo"

Barrie - Quarry
- The track is an ’80s-leaning power ballad, defined by dreamy synths and accented with guitars that pierce through the mirage. It’s a love song about what it feels like to be fully seen, and it’s matched with a VHS-style music video. I'm seeing alot of songs going back to the 80's style as of recently. I guess we're recycling?

Sevdaliza - High Alone
- “High Alone” details Sevdaliza’s desire for self-expression and self-control. Rather than give in to the standards, norms, and expectations of those around her, she forges her own path towards success. The song stood out from the prior singles due to its unusual change of production. I appreciate a nice experiment.

BLUE ROOM - hope everything finds their color
- The artist says, "I wanted to write a song that found me, so when I went to the old neighborhood I lived as a child, the place had changed a lot. I am grateful for the places I have been with my loved ones and the times that have permeated every place, and I want to love more moments to come in the future"

Lizzy McAlpine ft. FINNEAS - hate to be lame
- Lizzy sent a Direct Message to FINNEAS I January 2021, asking if he would want to be on this song with her. “YES DUDE” was his reply. A cool non lame response that personally appriciate. Honestly I can't think of anyone who would WANT to be lame. Do you?

Part 4
Soccer Mommy - Shotgun
Sunflower Bean - Roll the Dice
Wet Leg - Angelica
Alfie Templemen - Leaving Today
Magic City Hippies - High Above the Sun
POND - Lights of Leeming

Facts

Soccer Mommy - Shotgun
- “Shotgun” is the first single from Soccer Mommy’s third studio album “Sometimes, Forever”. The song's a new gem that chases after the perfect metaphor for what it’s like to be emphatically in love.“I wanted it to capture the little moments in a relationship that stick with you,” she said of this single. Definitely nailed it.

Sunflower Bean - Roll the Dice
- This new one is a hazy rock song with some psychedelic elements and lots of heavy bass blasts. In a press release, Sunflower Bean say the song is about how many adults now need a side hustle to secure their futures. Love the change of pace to something that's not about love!

Wet Leg - Angelica
- While the track appears to be upbeat, don’t be fooled — in typical Wet Leg fashion, there’s a firm layer of sarcasm hidden underneath. “It’s laced with disenchantment,” Teasdale said. “Even though the chorus is ‘good times, all the time.’ That’s just impossible, isn’t it?” is what they say. Too true.

Alfie Templemen - Leaving Today
- The new track, titled ‘Leaving Today’, was co-produced by Jungle‘s Tom McFarland, and features some hot cello action from the artist (19) himself. “Leaving Today was written about what it would be like to go on tour again after so long,” Alfie explains. It's about him realizing it's the small things they miss in life sometimes.

Magic City Hippies - High Above the Sun
- As the last track to their newest album, "Water Your Garden", the song embraces a funky upbeat vibe as they sing about loneliness of waiting for someone. I'm loving how alot of artist are wrapping sad feelings into happy ones. It's a very beautifully sarcastic moment.

POND - Lights of Leeming
- Australian psych-rock band POND released their ninth studio album, aptly entitled 9, late last year. This spring, they’re releasing a deluxe edition of the album, And one of those tracks is the synth-spiked “Lights Of Leeming,”. The song is a true story about the crushing boredom of suburbia and the wild and destructive things people do to break the monotony.
