Like a master surveyor, Jesus gives us clear directions to find a fulfilling, purpose-filled relationship with Himself - a map to the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Charted is a daily devotional written by the junior class at Fountainview Academy (Class of 2019). Based on the book Steps to Christ, this book explores the path to the Originator and Provider of Genuine Joy. We don't have to be confused about the way. The certainty is in the journey: divinely Charted.
Man, with his limited, human knowledge, cannot understand the
purposes of Omniscience. – Steps to Christ, pg. 108
The sun scorched the ground, evaporating any trace of water.
Plants choked out their pleas for rain as the life slowly drained from
their parched corpses. The skull of an unfortunate creature lay nearby,
its hollow, unseeing eyes staring fixedly at a turtle dragging itself along
the torrid sand, searching for the deliverance of the ocean. My shadow
hovered over this scene, my eyes falling on the small reptile. Pity cried
out from my heart: I have to do something! My tiny 4-year-old hands
grasped the sides of the turtle’s shell as I picked it up and fumbled
around, wondering what to do next. I knew the ocean was where
the turtle belonged; but there was no ocean to be seen—just African
desert.
I decided that the small, man-made rock well, from which the
rest of the animals drank, would do. I skipped across the burning sand,
turtle in my hands, with a sense of bliss. I had almost completed my
mission when my mother stepped in front of me, blocking my path
to success. She looked at me, and then down at the creature in my
hands, then back to me again. “Miclain, what in the world are you
doing?”
Frustrated by this interference, I exclaimed: “I’m saving this
turtle’s life; it needs water or it’s going to die!”
Dumbfounded, my mother shook her head: “Miclain, that’s not
a turtle; it’s a tortoise. If you put it in water, it will drown!”
In my eagerness, I had almost killed an innocent creature.
In my imagination, I was a superhero; but in reality I was the grim
reaper. If it was not for my mother’s heroic interference in my so-called
“rescue mission,” I would have made a major mistake. Instead of
playing the hero and hurting others, I can often benefit from realizing
my own ignorance and God’s Omniscience.
