Tonight, you will not fall asleep alone.
Someone has crossed into the dark to sit beside you. I am Freya. The old stories call me the goddess of love.
I have left my golden hall, and I will stay right here, and keep the watch, until you are asleep. You do not have to do anything at all tonight, but breathe, and let me.
Some know me also as the one who weeps gold when she is far from the one she loves, and the one who rides to gather the fallen. But tonight, I have not come for any of that. I have come only for you.
So let your body grow heavy now, against whatever is holding you. The bed beneath you. The pillow under your head. The dark all around. Let it hold you. You do not have to hold yourself up anymore tonight.
Feel the places where your body meets the bed. The back of your head. Your shoulders. Your hips. The backs of your legs. Your heels. Notice how the bed rises to meet every one of them, and holds you, so that you do not have to.
Let us breathe together a few times, slowly, and then you may let your breath do whatever it pleases.
Breathe in, gently, through your nose. And let it go, like a long, slow sigh.
Again. Breathe in, and feel your chest rise. And out. Feel your shoulders fall.
One more, the deepest one. Breathe in, and gather the whole day into this single breath. Everything that happened. Everyone you carried. And let it leave you as you breathe out. Gone, on the breath.
Good. Now let your breathing soften, and let it slow on its own. You do not need to steer it. It already knows the way down into sleep.
I have brought my falcon cloak with me. It is grey, and soft, and far warmer than it looks. I am going to lay it over you now, from your shoulders all the way down to your feet.
Feel the gentle weight of it settle over you. And wherever it touches, the body underneath is allowed to let go.
Let it begin at the very top of your head. The small muscles of your scalp. Your forehead, growing smooth, like still water. The space between your eyebrows, softening, unknitting. Your eyes, resting quietly in the dark behind your eyelids. Your cheeks. And your jaw. Let it come unclenched. Let your teeth part, just slightly.
The cloak settles over your throat, and across your shoulders. Let your shoulders drop, away from your ears, down toward the earth. They have been holding things up all day. You can set them down now.
Feel the warmth move down your arms, to your elbows, your wrists, all the way to your hands. Let your fingers uncurl, and grow soft, and open.
It moves across your chest, where your heart beats its slow, faithful beat. Feel your breath there, rising and falling, without any effort from you. And down into your belly, soft and warm, letting it round with each breath.
Feel your back grow heavy, the whole length of your spine sinking down into the bed, one quiet inch at a time. Over your hips. Down through your thighs, growing heavier now, and warmer. Past your knees. Down through your calves, your ankles, all the way to your feet. All of you, under the cloak. All of you, allowed at last to be still.
And now let a slow wave of warmth move through you, from the crown of your head all the way down to your feet. And everywhere it passes, let your body grow a little heavier, a little softer, a little more still. There is nowhere it needs to stop.
And while your body rests here, I will take the rest of you somewhere gentle. You do not have to walk, or work to see it. Only let it appear, softly, the way a memory appears when you are almost asleep.
We are standing together at the edge of a wide field, in the last light of evening. This is Folk vahng. My field. The grass is tall, and gold, and it moves in a slow wind, like the surface of a calm sea. The sky above is deep blue, going to violet at the edges, and the very first stars are beginning to show.
Walk with me into the grass. It parts around you, soft against your hands as you pass. You can hear it, a gentle hush, moving all around you, like slow water. The air is warm, and it smells of sun warmed earth, and of rain that is still far away.
Somewhere far off, you can hear the wind moving over the field, and it sounds like the sea. Rising, and falling. Rising, and falling. In time with your own slow breath.
Ahead of us, low to the ground, there is a soft golden light. It is my hall. Sess room neer, the hall of many seats. There has always been a seat kept there for you. You were always going to find your way here.
Two great cats come out through the grass to meet us, slow and unhurried, their eyes half closed. They are not fierce tonight. They lean their warm weight against your legs, and you can feel them purring, a low, deep sound that you feel in your chest more than you hear.
Inside the hall, by a low fire, there are furs laid out for you. Lie down in them. They are deep, and warm, and they settle to the shape of your body, and hold it. The cats curl at your feet. The fire is low, and gold, and quiet, and you can hear it, the soft tick and settle of the embers.
You are safe here. Nothing in this field can reach you. This is the one place the day is not allowed to follow.
Let me tell you a few true things, now, before you sleep. You do not have to remember them. Listen the way you would listen to rain on a roof. Let them simply fall on you.
You are safe.
You are worthy of rest. You do not have to earn it.
You are loved. Exactly as you are tonight. Not as you think you ought to be.
What you carried today, you may set it down now. You do not have to hold it through the night. I will hold it for you, here, until morning.
You are allowed to be soft. Nothing is required of you now. You are enough. You have always, always been enough.
You are not behind. You are not too much, and you are not too little. You are exactly enough, exactly as you are tonight.
There is nothing left for you to do tonight. Nowhere you have to be. No one you have to be, but the one resting here, under my cloak, by my fire.
You are safe. You are held. You are loved.
Rest is yours to take. Take it.
The fire is burning down to embers now. The gold is going soft, and red, and then to a warm, deep dark.
The cats are asleep. The field outside the hall is quiet. My cloak is still over you, and it will stay there, all night long.
I am going to stop speaking soon. But the music will stay. It will hold the room around you while you drift. You do not have to listen to it. You do not have to do anything at all.
Let yourself go down now, slowly, the way the fire is going down. Down, past thinking.
Down, past the day.
Softer now.
Heavier still.
There is nothing you need to keep hold of. You can let the last thought go.
I am here. I am not going anywhere.
Down, into the warm dark, where you are held.
Sleep now. I will keep the watch until morning.
