The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

A celebration of The Go-Go's going to the top spot 40 years ago, then it's our usual extra fresh new joints out for the rest of the two hours, and although Kat Bass had to quarantine, she's got the goods for our Popcast in hour 2!

Show Notes

As broadcast March 7, 2022.  Tonight we celebrate The Go-Go's, the first all female group to write their own tunes and play their own instruments to go to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982.  After that, Kat Bass is out this week with a bit of a quarantine situation today, so it's Danno taking us through all the new tunes fit for a spin for both hours.  Lots of great new albums out over the previous weekend, with a ton of big singles to boot.

It is 20 hours past midnight and the first chapter of labor is behind us for this week, but no matter what went down we’re here to help you get over it this fine Monday night, entered into the posterity machine as Mar 7, 2022. This is Danno making sure not to blow the speakers but still bump, coming to you via the magic of radio from studio 2 and the tower atop GFN HQ at the base of Sajik Park in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Thankful for all of you getting with the program whether now or later, and as mentioned it is Monday so it’s time for the new stuff. Good new singles out from HAIM, Nilufer Yanya, and Jack White amongst other luminaries of the game both great and small. Tonight we are usually joined by Kat Bass in the studio, but she’s on quarantine for the day since she had a close call over the weekend, but she has nonetheless done the necessary for our 2nd hour selections, although I will be on the solo tip for tonight. So, with that all out of the way, it’s time for our TIGHT (or) feature to begin the show, as it was yesterday 40 years ago to the day that a trailblazing girl rock group had an album from the year prior go to #1 on the Billboard charts, and we’ll go go the facts and background after the beat and the beauties. THIS is The Drop.
The Go-Go’s – Tonite
The Drop is officially all up in the atmosphere this evening, and we have kicked off our New Muses Monday old school, as we are usually wont to do.
This is Danno as always between 8 & 10 on GFN, big ups to each and every one of you taste mavens joining us on the broadcast tonight. That was The Go-Go’s with off their 1982 album Beauty and The Beat, which went to #1 yesterday on the Billboard charts.
That was a bit of a b-side off this classic record called Tonite for our TIGHT (or) feature to start things right, and while you might know that The Supremes waaaaay back in the 1960’s were the first all-female ensemble to go to #1 on the charts, the Go-Go’s were the first to do it while writing and playing the instruments on all their songs.
The band’s tunes and imagery are bouncy and fun, but they are a product of the Los Angeles punk scene, honing their skills since 1978 in small clubs alongside acts like The Dickies and The Germs. It turned out however that The Go-Go’s had a lot more pop sensibility than many of these acts though, and also an impressive collection of songwriting talent in their two guitarists. Their first US single, "Our Lips Are Sealed," was written by Jane Wiedlin with help from Terry Hall of The Specials - the song is about their clandestine affair; their next single, "We Got The Beat," was written by their other guitarist, Charlotte Caffey, who was riffing on the song "Going To A Go-Go" by The Miracles. With a boost from the recently launched MTV, these songs send the album to the top spot, where it stays for six weeks. It's not until 1999 that another all-girl band hits #1 writing their own songs and playing their own instruments: Dixie Chicks with Fly.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
Okay, so the old stuff is out of the way and it’s time to let in the new tonight. Up next is more femme rock with Nilufer Yanya’s latest to be followed by HAIM and Luna Li, all of which we shall discuss after they ride the airwaves. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
______
Back on The Drop. What’s happening tonight, Drop Slops (KOR)? Danno here, studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, thrilled to have you with us as always whether it’s now or in the future, which is admittedly the best way to go about doing The Drop thing. Kat Bass will not be physically in studio for tonight’s Popcast feature as she’s gotta quarantine today while awaiting her official test results after a close call. Not surprising as the COVID numbers are going bonks these past few weeks, but I’m sure she’s alright and we’ll see her in studio hopefully next week. As to what we just rocked, that was…
Nilufer Yanya – the dealer (…the opening salvo to the Norwegian London-based artist’s sophomore LP. After the absolute magnetism of her debut record from 2019 Miss Universe, the self-induced pressure is on, but the record is definitely getting positive reviews thus far, with Pitchfork amongst others putting it in their best new music category.)
HAIM – Lost Track (…just out this weekend and the first new music from the sister trio since Women In Music Vol 3 dropped, this tune has been heard previously during screenings of the Alana Haim-starring Paul Thomas Anderson film Licorice Pizza, out everywhere.)
Luna Li – What You’re Thinking (…always an interesting listen, the young Korean-Canadian artist is out with Duality as of Friday. Her debut album is also getting big buzz from high places, and she is currently on tour with Japanese Breakfast, another brilliant half Korean act, albeit American it must be noted.)
Alright, so we still got some space on the clock tonight to get a couple more new joints in before the first quarter buzzer sounds. Up next is MICHELLE with a cut called POSE, which is the latest from the NYC-based sextet who always seem to have something interesting up their sleeve. To finish we got Peach Pit with a cut called Give Up Baby, Go which is off their latest LP called From 2 to 3, and is available everywhere. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.

Back on the attack for this Monday’s New Muses fracas. Danno here, excited to have you with us, you’re the best. This is our new music showcase for the week, and unfortunately whereas you are indeed here, Kat Bass will not be in the studio for this week as she’s testing today for a close contact bit of business over the weekend. As to what we just let into the ether, that was a real quick hitter to start from...
Lou Roy – Down Since ‘07 (…after announcing her Vegas-inspired debut album in January, this is the 2nd single from the LP. The LA-based singer-songwriter is out with the Pure Chaos LP on April 29, which is also co-produced by Sarah Tudzin from Illuminati Hotties.)
Jacob Banks – Just When I Thought (…this apparently is the first taste of a new album coming out from the artist, although when and what it’s called is still a bit of a mystery. Banks says that 'Just When I Thought' is a story of two parts – my rebellion to the feeling of being helplessness and my surrender to it.")
Pod, socials, etc…
So, let’s get back to the music and we have a bit more of an upbeat exploration in store for the rest of part 2 this evening. Up next we have the latest from Honeywhip with Tom the Mail Man and Hrishikesh Hirway to finish and in that order. We’ll talk about all there is to know after the notes float, but for now this is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.

Nearer to halftime now, this is Danno coming back from a bit of a banger vis-à-vis our usual part 2 grind. Kat Bass is on the show tonight for our Popcast as far as the tunes go, but will not be in the studio as she is on the quarantine grind for tonight. As far as we just shot into space via the magic of radio, that was…
Honeywhip – Transients (…still kind of a mystery group here based now in SF, the Canadian-American duo moved to Tokyo and started making music there, which saw them start releasing tunes upon their return to LA. Now, the band are out with this joint, although nothing larger or even identifying announced.)
Tom the Mail Man – Over* (…this is a single from the upcoming SV2 album, this young man out of Monroe GA has steadily been creating a sizable audience for himself independently over the last few years. SV2 drops April 8, so keep an eye out if you dug that.)
Hrishikesh Hirway – Stillness (…if you’re not familiar with the name, he’s been a busy guy, previously releasing tunes under The One AM Radio moniker. He’s also composed original scores for Netflix’s Everything sucks TV show along with films Our Nixon and Save the Date along with the video game The Red Lantern.)
Alright so the halftime break beckons but we still got a couple tunes burning a hole in our pocket. First up is a crazy collab between Jack White and Q-Tip called Hi-De-Ho, the latest single released from Fear of The Dawn, the White Strips and Raconteurs founder’s fourth solo album, and that is out April 8. After that we’ll finish with the triple exclamations aka chk chk chk on a cut called Storm Around The World. The vocals here are from Maria Uzor, and is the lead single to the Let It Be Blue LP, the band’s 9th studio album and that all drops May 6. That’s gonna do it for the first half, we’ll see you in part 3 shortly. THIS is The Drop at the half.

Hot-Take

Kevin Kaarl - Good Times
"Good times" star Johnny Brown has recently passed away at the age of 84. The multi talented actor went for a check up on his pacemaker and went into cardiac arrest. We send prayers to the family with the sudden loss of a great man. Rest in power, Johnny Brown.

Zara Larsson - Lush Life (retro version)
Kim Kardashian is now OFFICIALLY single! Now, we knew the KimYe couple were struggling with the divorce for a while now, but after 4 lawyers and an eternity later, Kim is legally split with Ye!

Fresh Buns

Alessia Clara - I Choose
03.04.2022
‘I Choose’ is the first track of Alessia Clara's latest album Broken Heart. It's a bit different in creation, with clever production that doesn’t tick every norm, but tells a story wonderfully, with a rich vocal that delivers a flowing melody.

Ashe - Another Man's Jeans
03.03.2022
"Another Man’s Jeans" is about unashamed and uninhibited confidence, loosening up and having a good time," Ashe explains. "It sounds like what carefree feels like. It’s sexy! And loud! And fun! It’s a reminder to not take life too seriously." I really do stand by that.

BENEE- Hurt you, Gus
03.04.2022
This song is about caring for someone a lot but not being able to give yourself to them entirely. The Artist wrote it at the start of their last relationship, when they felt like they were pushing away a bit.

Peach Pit - 2015
03.04.2022
"2015" is the 10th track to Peach Pit's newest album, From 2 to 3. The sound of the album leaned into more country/folksy inspiration than any previous releases from the band.

Kiana Ledé ft. Ari Lennox - Chocolate.

Part IV

Khalid - Last Call
03.03.2022
Khalid is looking back on his past eras as he enters a new one. On Thursday, the singer released the music video for his newest single “Last Call,” in which he pays homage to the themes of his past LPs, but sings about a love he’s willing to wait for.

Cheat Codes ft. Icona Pop - Payback
03.04.2022
‘Payback’ tells a tale about a young woman who decides to give her significant other a dose of his own medicine. I recommend adding Cheat Codes’ “Payback” single to your summer dance playlist

Camila Cabello ft.Ed Sheeran - BAM BAM
03.04.2022
Coming months after her break-up with Shawn Mendes, “Bam Bam” is Camila Cabello’s anthem about moving on and accepting inevitability in losing a partner. Things change, and one can’t dwell on that for too long. Hmmm I beg to differ.

5 seconds of summer - COMPLETE MESS
03.02.2022
“Complete Mess” follows 5 Seconds of Summer anniversary single “2011” and is the lead single of their fifth studio album, set to be released in late 2022. It is about a romantic relationship and that simple, universal feeling of feeling a complete mess without someone, but feeling complete with them.

On Tour

Who. The Weeknd
When/Where. Us/Canada
