The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

We mark a bit of history on Soul Train with Gino Vanelli back in the day, then get into the main event for the duration with Prince Paolo back after a three show hiatus with tons of fresh indie truffles to share.

Show Notes

As broadcast February 16, 2022 with plenty of reunited for your podcast feels so good.  Tonight we welcome back Prince Paolo for the first time in several weeks with the Lunar New Year and Danno's quarantine last week ruining our chance to get him into the studio.  Thus, a special night calls for good tunes, and both Danno and Prince Paolo brought it for the full two hours with fresh cuts and slept on specials for the palette, with highlights from Jordana, Pale Moon, and Sampa The Great to taste test, amongst other highly worthy artists just making their way.  One correction to be made here is that Gino Vanelli made his appearance on Soul Train in 1975, not 1972.

PART 1 SONGS
Gino Vanelli – People Gotta Move
Calson – Galactic Sushis Time To Shine
Spoon – Feels Alright
The Golf Club – funny lil thing
Ryan Egan – Soft Power
Simen Mitlid – Leon T.
PART 1 FACTS
Gino Vanelli – People Gotta Move
- Performing "People Gotta Move," Gino Vannelli becomes the first white singer to perform on Soul Train, beating Elton John by a few months. The first white musician to play the show was guitarist Dennis Coffey with his instrumental hit "Scorpio" in 1972.
- Interesting to see Soul Train turn into a national phenomenon and the changes that introduced to the show during this time, as it started out as a very strictly African-American and local program in Chicago, but by this time they’d moved out to LA and were broadcast coast-to-coast.
Calson – Galactic Sushis Time To Shine
- This is a tune I admittedly slept on early in the year, released as part of the band’s album called The After After Party, which you know…we were both big fans of in the earlier stages of life.
- Calson is the project of Matthew Moreno from Orange County in Southern California, or as he puts it “the depths of Fullerton, CA.” Really cool tune right there, so check the album if you dug the vibe.
Spoon – Feels Alright
- Pretty big album drop right here from Friday, with the veteran band releasing their 10th studio album Lucifer on the Sofa via Matador.
- This one’s getting huge praise over the weekend from the critterati, with The Guardian calling it a timeless album and giving it 5 stars, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen, so I didn’t think it was possible, tbh.
The Golf Club – funny lil thing
- I have no bio info on this band, except a picture of two guys standing outside with their bio saying “accepting memberships.”
- Oh, their bio in insta also says “golf shmolf.”
- Love this dreamy tune though, good stuff
Ryan Egan – Soft Power
- Our main New Yorker in Paris is back with his latest tune, which we gotta give props for since he hipped us several weeks before its release last Friday.
- This is the title track off his upcoming album, which is out April 8.
Simen Mitlid – Leon T.
- The artist out of Norway is readying the release of his new EP, and this is the latest taste of the full project.
- The EP is called Social, which will get full release later this spring.
PART 2 SONGS
L'Objectif - Same Thing
Mwanje – Wild Ones feat Sampa The Great
Synapson feat Dominique Fils-Aimé - Stand Tall
Alfie Templeman - Broken
Dust in the Sunlight - Former Lives
MALIA - Only One
PART 2 FACTS
L'Objectif - Same Thing
- L’Objectif is a four-piece band from Leeds and they make really cool music. Their energetic new single is fun, light, and just full of sound.
- The subject matter of the song is simple by design. Lead singer Saul Kane says he just wanted to write a song that people can sing and dance to.
- For him, he says that the song is about telling that overthinking internal voice to just shut up. He says that he originally wrote it about someone else, but later realized that it is more of a message to himself.
FOALS – 2am
- FOALS is a trio based in London. Their latest offering, 2am came with a confirmation that they will be releasing a new album this year. The album will be called Life is Yours and it will be released sometime this summer.
- The band says that it will be “a party album” and I imagine that this new single is a taste of what we can expect.
- “2am” is jubilant and definitely has that “a night on the town” kind of vibe to it for sure.
Synapson feat Dominique Fils-Aimé - Stand Tall
- This song might be my pick of the week, it’s been on repeat ever since I heard it.
- Synapson is a French electro duo and they have teamed up with singer-songwriter Dominique Fils-Aime for this beautiful tune.
- For those that don’t know, Dominique is a Canadian artist and she won Vocal Jazz Album of the Year at the 2020 Juno Awards, which is like the Canadian version of the Grammy’s.
- Truly a gem of a track. This is definitely my kind of tune.
Alfie Templeman – Broken
- The young and very talented Alfie Templeman is back with a new single. “Broken” is the latest single taken from his forthcoming full-length debut album. The album is entitled Mellow Moon and it will arrive on May 27th via Chess Club Records.
- Alfie says that “Broken” is a bit of an anthem for people his age. The 19-year-old says that the song is about realizing that analyzing yourself is an important part of growing up.
- He dedicates it to all the youngsters out there that feel “broken” sometimes.
Dust in the Sunlight - Former Lives
- Dust in the Sunlight is a duo from London. Their latest single, “Former Lives” is taken from their forthcoming sophomore EP, which is scheduled for release sometime later this year.
- This song was written in response to society’s pressures and expectations. More specifically, it’s about how modern life can make you feel like you need to do a million things at once.
- The band says that we should just go at our own pace and stay positive. Musically, the track is dreamy and moving. Nice offering from Dust in the Sunlight.
MALIA - Only One
- I’m really feeling this one. I was going to play it to close out the show, because you know I love smooth landings, but I thought it fit a little better right here, at the end of our first hour.
- MALIA is an artist based in LA and her new track, “Only One” really has those 90s R&B vibes. It reminds me a lot of artists like Maxwell or D’Angelo. Just slick, minimal instrumentals, and great vocals.
- “Only One” is the first single taken from MALIA’s upcoming EP, “What’s After ‘I Love You?’”, which is a great title by the way, and that will drop on March 4th via Black Sea Music.
PART 3 SONGS
Jordana - Catch My Drift
Vance Eris - HOT FUDGE
Cayo Coco – Sofie
Urban Parcs – Kool Aid
Meyru - Off White
Lo Moon - Stop
PART 3 FACTS
Jordana - Catch My Drift
- Jordana is an artist based in NYC and she describes herself as a multi-genre dwelling 21-year-old.
- Her previous tracks leaned more into the rock genre, but her new track “Catch My Drift” definitely has a more pop sound to it.
- This song is taken from her forthcoming new album, “Face the Wall”. Impressively, she says that she played every single instrument on the new album. “Face the Wall” will be released on May 20th via Grand Jury.
Vance Eris - HOT FUDGE
- Vance Eris hails from Tarzana, which is a suburb in LA, and he affectionately describes himself as “valley trash”. I do love that for some strange reason.
- This track is one of those feel-good tunes, it’s bouncy, light, and danceable. Vance Eris is still pretty new on the scene, “Hot Fudge” is just his second release so far.
- His sound definitely piqued my interest so I’ll be on the lookout for more from Mr. Valley Trash.
Cayo Coco – Sofie
- Cayo Coco is the solo project of LA-based multi-instrumentalist Lumen Loraine. “Sofie” is his latest single, and fourth release in the past two months.
- Cayo Coco is getting set to release his debut album. The album will drop on the 22nd.
- This new track is expansive and there is a dreaminess to it that I really like. Quite the emotional tune, I looking forward to hearing what else he’s got in store for us before the release of his album.
mxmtoon - mona lisa
- Mxmtoon aka Maia is a 21-year-old singer-songwriter who is from Oakland but currently based in New York.
- She is also a gamer, podcaster, and activist, and she has a lot of fans. She has over 5.5 million monthly listeners on her Spotify, which is very impressive indeed.
- “Mona Lisa” was released alongside an announcement that her sophomore album will be out sometime this year. No other official details yet but we’ll keep you posted on that.
- Kind of an interesting track. Most songs are about someone, but this song is asking the question, “will anyone write a song about me?”... It’s like asking if I’ll ever be someone’s source of inspiration, someone’s Mona Lisa.
Meyru - Off White
- Meyru is an indie rock band from New York City. They released their debut album in 2020. The album is called “Good to See You” and has been described as sounding similar to The Strokes, if The Strokes were angrier and more delicate.
- They’ve only released 4 songs since that debut album. I’ve had a listen and I think their music is really great. The songs are really well written and catchy but they still manage to maintain a bit of an edge to their sound. I like this band a lot, really nice stuff.
Lo Moon – Stop
- We’ve got a bit of a longer player to close out Part 3 of the show tonight courtesy of Lo Moon. Lo Moon is an indie rock band based in LA.
- Although the song is kind of a long one, you don’t really feel the time passing because the instrumentation and overall songwriting keeps changing and evolving.
- The band is getting set to release their second album very soon. The album is called “A Modern Life” and it will be released on the 25th.
PART 4 SONGS
Luxxury - Just Like It Was Before (Art of Tones Remix)
Phil From Havea - Savoureux
Pale Moon - Clown
Au Gres - do you think were old enough?
Carli Brill - Concrete Jungle
Erin Rae - Lighten Up & Try
PART 4 FACTS
Luxxury - Just Like It Was Before
- I’m always pretty happy to see a new Luxxury tune pop up in my feed and this time it is remix by Art of Tones. Luxxury is from the US and Art of Tones is an artist from Paris.
- The Studio 54 disco vibes are very heavy on this one and I think Art of Tones did a great job of adding some extra elegance and shine via the strings and smooth vocals. Very French approach for sure, and I like it a lot.
Phil From Havea – Savoureux
- Staying with the disco vibes we had German producer, Phil From Havea.
- He says that the song was inspired by a track that he heard in the days when MySpace was still a thing. The track was from a producer named Savoureux. The producer only had 2 tracks out at the time and was never heard from again.
- Anyway, Phil from Havea, found the original sample from the track, Sparque’s “Music Turns Me On”, from 1980. He put together his own arrangement, new drums and chords and I think the result is an addictive disco track. Good vibes all around on this one.
Pale Moon – Clown
- I am in love with this tune. Pale Moon is an indie-pop duo from Iceland. The song is well-titled.
- The track was written by band member Nata and she explains that the song is about how she is often silly in serious situations and likes to deal with life in an ironic way.
- She says that she views herself as a kind of clown because she is more comfortable with being silly that genuine. Musically, the song is crisp, clean, and just overall excellent in my opinion. Really good stuff from Pale Moon.
Au Gres - do you think were old enough?
- Au Gres is the moniker of Joshua Kemp and he hails from Adrian, Michigan. He went to business school and got a corporate job, but deep down, he always knew that the artist life was for him.
- The song is about reminiscing on life on a rainy day, thinking about his youthful dreams and ambitions, and how many of those goals have gone unmet.
- Even though it is kind of sad, there is a positive spin in that the singer remains optimistic about the future and believes that it’s still possible that the best is yet to come.
Carli Brill - Concrete Jungle
- Carli Brill is an artist who was born and raised in Southern California. She released her self-titled debut album in 2019 and a year later, she relocated to Nashville to pursue her music career full-time.
- Musically, the song is very much a throwback, strongly influenced by music from the 50s and 60s.
- She says that the song is inspired by her time spent in New York. It’s about finding new love in the big city.
Erin Rae - Lighten Up & Try
- We are going to stay in Nashville to close out the program. This song is much more stereotypically Nashville than the Carli Brill track. It definitely has that country folk music vibe to it.
- This song is taken from her recently released new album, Lighten Up. This song hit me harder than I thought. I’ve been going through some things in my personal life recently and this song just really spoke to me.
- Sometimes we just have to “Lighten Up and Try”, and that is the kind of vibe we will close the show with tonight.
