A faith-forward podcast for people who love Jesus but also love being honest about how weird and wonderful life can be. Hosts Kerrye and Jill tell stories about the Bible, talk about their faith, and dig into what it looks like to follow God through the ordinary chaos of everyday, imperfect life. Real conversations. Real stories. No pretending to have it all together. Pull up a chair, turn the page, and let's go.
Welcome to Chapter and Verse, where people
come on and tell their real stories,
faith, failure, redemption, and the
occasional, "Lord, what are you doing?"
moment.
Some inspiring, some messy,
and some that probably should
have come with a warning label.
Because through every chapter of
every story, God is still writing.
And He's not afraid of a little chaos.
This is Jill.
And Kerrye Let's turn the page.
Kerrye: Okay.
Well, we're here today with our good
friend Sharon Hogue, and we're so
excited to hear a chapter in your life.
Welcome.
Sharon: Thank you.
I'm so honored to be here-
Yay ⦠amongst all your distinguished
guests, and- ⦠I've listened to
several of your podcast, and- Good
they've all been really encouraging, and-
I mean, everybody- ⦠enjoyed
them ⦠has done such a great job, and
they may have been a little intimidated
at first- Yep ⦠including me.
Mm-hmm.
But, um, but it just, I mean- It's just a
conversation
⦠Kerrye: I love hearing people's stories.
Sharon: I, I think that's why.
Yeah.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: Wasn't too nervous about it.
Kerrye: Yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
' Sharon: Cause I thought, "Oh,
they're gonna be asking me things."
Yeah.
Nope.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: Yeah.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Um, well tell us a little
bit about yourself.
Sharon: Well, I amâ¦
My name is, of course, Sharon
Hogue, and I've been married
to Gary for about 30 years, and
we've got a RFA- Congratulations.
Thank you.
Um, we have four children.
We have a blended family,
um, five grandchildren, and
three bonus grandchildren.
Aw.
Uh, we've gone to RFA probably
for about 25 years, I guess.
Jill: Wow.
Sharon: Brother Moore was the
pastor when we first started, so-
Jill: Man.
Sharon: We came to visit and just
check out churches because I'd
always gone to a small church.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: And thought we're gonna try one of
the big ones, and it just felt like home.
Isn't that crazy?
So we knew that's where we needed to be.
Jill: It's crazy, like when Ben and I
were looking at RFA ⦠Of course, Ben
had been to RFA before he moved off.
Like, he grew up in this area, so he was
there when he was a teenager or whatever.
But I just came from smaller
churches, and I was expecting to
be able to, A, hide in this church.
Mm-hmm.
Uh-huh.
And B, I was not, I just wasn't
expecting it to feel homey and
inclusive, and I was very surprised.
Sharon: Right.
Jill: But in a good way.
Sharon: And we've loved it, and
we've been- Yeah ⦠blessed.
There's probably not been a
service that we've ever gone
to, and just everybody's great.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: Never had a bad experience there.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: And- It's
Jill: a great place to be
⦠Sharon: and I grew up in church.
My dad was an Assembly of God preacher.
Mm-hmm.
So I kinda- Oh ⦠grew
up on a church pew.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: Not that I've
always lived for the Lord.
Mm-hmm.
I had to, you know-
Jill: Well, they're
not the same thing, so.
Sharon: Yeah.
Jill: Yeah.
Yeah.
But I, you know, backslid probably
in my 20s, early 30s, and then came
back to the Lord and- Wholeheartedly.
Jill: Yeah.
Learned what grace was-
Kerrye: Yeah
⦠and just how much he loved me.
Kerrye: Yeah.
So he's awesome like that.
Yes.
Kerrye: Um, well, what chapter are we
gonna be talking about today in your life?
Well, I think, um, when you asked
me to be on the podcast, it always
comes to mind, like, my most recent
experience, I think, with battling
cancer and just how God showed up
and was so faithful and healed me.
Yeah.
And I just feel like I promised
him, I said, "Lord, if you ever
give me an opportunity, no matter,
you know, how few, how many, howâ¦
I will never say no."
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Because he's been too good-
Jill: Yeah
⦠for me not to just share what
he's done- Yeah ⦠in my life
and taught me so many things.
And every day I'm still learning,
and I still have to relearn
some of those lessons becauseâ¦
But I think I wanna start
by just talking about fear-
Jill: Okay
⦠and how I think I have battled that,
like different types of fear my whole
life, and how I've un- I felt God
leading me and, like, convicting me.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
You know?
Mm-hmm.
Like, I never really thought of it as sin-
Jill: Mm-hmm
⦠or being disobedient to live in that.
But I think when it all came to head,
I was driving to my daughter's house.
She lives in Northwest Arkansas.
And I had left work, this has been several
years ago, but I had left work on a,
like a Friday evening, and it was rainy-
Jill: Mm-hmm
⦠and getting dark and all that.
And I was on 49 just getting
ready to go in that tunnel-
Jill: Okay.
Yep ⦠you know, up to her house.
And my windshieldâ¦
It was pouring down, and my windshield
wipers snapped and quit working.
Jill: Whoa.
And traffic was-
Jill: Yeah
⦠crazy and all that.
The way it
Jill: is, yeah.
So it scared me to
death, to say the least.
Mm-hmm.
And I pulled over on the side of
the road and, and kinda waited
for the rain to s- subside.
And I called her, and she
kind of calmed me down.
She talked me through it, and I was
able to get to her house by God's
miraculous hand- Mm-hmm ⦠I know.
Yeah.
Because it started raining
again before I got to her house.
Oh, good.
In fact, it was so bad.
But we hated to leave my
car on the side of the road.
Right.
Yeah.
Never know.
But by the time I got to her house, it was
pitch black and raining and- Mm-hmm ⦠in
fact, she met me, and I could see her h-
her tail lights is how I got to her house.
Mm-hmm.
And so anyway, I just was so exhausted,
and f- I think that it just planted
an even bigger seed of fear in me.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
And I just kinda let that grow, I think.
And I just, I, I realized that
later on that that was the enemy.
And that summer, even after, like,
I would be afraid to get in the car.
Yeah.
I didn'tâ¦
I would check the weather
if I was gonna go anywhere.
Really?
I mean, I was, like, gettingâ¦
It was gettingâ¦
And I was driving Gary crazy in the
car because I would, like, just be
so tense, you know, that somethingâ¦
It, it kinda became bigger
than it really was even.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And so the Lord started convicting me
of that, that I wasn't trusting him.
And this was a few months before the
cancer thing, but my brother called me
just out of the blue and invited me.
He said, "My sister-in-law," or his wife,
he said, "They're gonna do a Bible study
at Lamar," which was my home church.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
And he said, "Iâ¦
You know, you should go."
And So I, I did, and the, the
name of the Bible study was called
Brave: Living a Fearless Life.
Oh.
And so I knew that God led me to that.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
And so maybeâ¦
I can't remember if it was a few
days before I started the Bible study
or exactly when it was, but when I
discovered this, I was leaning back
in my chair one night, and I just
felt this big mass in my breast.
Jill: Really?
Yes.
It was pretty lar- it was unmistakable.
Okay.
And I thought, "What was that?"
So I get up and I go to the
bathroom, and I'm checking again,
and sure enough, it was there.
And just all of a sudden, I heard the
Lord just speak to me, and it was likeâ¦
I've described this before, and
y'all may have heard this when I
gave my testimony at church, but it
was like a faucet, like a, a drip
of water that came from a faucet.
It was just like he planted this
little seed in my heart, and it
said, "This is not unto death."
That's whatâ¦
And I don't really think l- in
the King James version, you know?
Jill: Right, right.
Yeah.
And so it was weird, but I
thought, "Okay, Lord," you know.
And so I didn't worry about it.
But like the next day, I thought,
"You know, that is there, and
I don't need to ignore it."
Jill: Right.
Sharon: So I called and
made an appointment.
And a long story short, it
was two months beforeâ¦
It was like a mess-up in paperwork
and referrals and all that.
Mm-hmm.
It was like two months before
I actually got a mammogram.
Kerrye: Wow.
Serious.
And then what was your
feelings during that two month?
Was you, were you scared?
I was doing this Bible study-
Kerrye: Oh
⦠that whole time.
That was just
Kerrye: like planted-
Isn't God so good?
Yeah.
Yes.
And it was like, I, I even got that
book out this afternoon and was looking
at it, and it was just life basics.
Mm-hmm.
That's all.
It, it was so simple.
Mm-hmm.
But it was just scripture after scripture
after scripture of why we should not and
have no reason to fear, really- Yeah.
Jill: Wow
⦠anything.
Jill: Yeah.
I meanâ¦
And that's what torments us.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
You know, a lot of times theâ¦
You know, like cancer isâ¦
It's horrible, and itâ¦
You know, I would never
wish that on anybody.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
But the thing that really gets you and
takes you down, I think, is the fear.
Jill: Right.
It's the
unknown.
So Godâ¦
Anyway, I was doing this Bible study,
and I could feel myself, like, getting
stronger, but I felt like this whole
time, "Okay, Lord, you gave me this word.
This is n- not gonna be anything."
Right.
"I'm not gonna worry about
this taking so long-"
Kerrye: Mm-hmm
⦠" to get in and have it checked out."
But I did.
They checked it out, and
immediately were suspicious.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
And it was like once I got
in to get the mammogram, they
did the biopsy the same day.
I went to Little Rock to Dr.
Higgins.
I was like one of his last patients.
Wow.
And he called me the next day And
about 3:00 in the afternoon, and I
was sitting out on the porch, I think,
and my phone rang and I went in.
He said, "I'mâ¦
Sharon, I'm sorry to have to tell
you this, but this is malignant.
It, it is cancer."
And I just remember getting up
kinda like numb and going out on the
porch, sitting in my rocking chair,
and I said, "God, I need a word."
And he very clearly said, "I
have already given you one."
Mm.
And so I remembered that, you know.
Well, then, like in the next few
days, you know, when you hear words
like, they told me it was triple
negative, which is an aggressive form-
Mm-hmm ⦠of breast cancer, and that
I would have to have chemo before I
could have surgery, and just that it
was gonna be like a year-long thing.
Jill: Yeah.
You know, I just thought,
"Lord, did I even hear you?
Did I hear you?"
And so I said, "I need a
scripture that backs that up."
And so I just looked up those
words, and it took meâ¦
I think it's John 11:4, where
he's talking about Lazarus.
Mm-hmm.
And he said, "This is not unto death,
but it's to glorify the, the Son of God."
Yeah.
That's paraphrasing it a little bit.
Yeah.
Jill: Yeah.
And so I just, from then on,
I just, I hung onto that.
I hung onto that.
Jill: Wow.
And I just, I would listen to scriptures.
Like, I would just play 'em.
Like Dodie Osteen, I know
y'all have heard her testimony.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
And I read her book.
I practically memorized her book,
and I would pass those out at the
cancer center when we would go.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
And then I think Charles Capps
wrote a book called "God's
Creative Power for Healing."
Mm-hmm.
And just, I memorized and I
quoted out loud, you know?
Kerrye: Yeah.
That's important, to say it out loud.
Yes.
Jill: Yep.
Yes.
I mean, if you could think
of your heart likeâ¦
And I, I don't know, this always just
comes to me, even like my whole journey.
It's like your heart's a
garden, and God planted a seed-
Mm-hmm ⦠but it was up to me-
Jill: To tend to
Sharon: it ⦠to cultivate it.
Yes.
Yes.
Jill: Exactly.
Sharon: And I did that by listening
to his word, by Reading it, by quoting
it, by memorizing it, you know.
Mm-hmm.
And just there's power in his
word, and I guess that'sâ¦
My message today is just God's word- Yeah
is true.
It's living-
Kerrye: Mm-hmm
⦠Sharon: active, and the more we speak it,
the more we read it, the more we live it-
Kerrye: Yeah
⦠Sharon: I guess, the more
real it becomes in your life,
and, you know, it just grows.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: Faith grows.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Yeah.
So what was the, like, what
process did you go through
after you found that out, like?
Sharon: Um, well, immediately
they started, um, chemotherapy.
Mm-hmm.
And I did that, like, weekly
for about, I guess, well, from
October to January every week.
So I was fortunate.
Even though my doctors were in
Little Rock, I got to have my
treatments at Carti in Russellville.
Kerrye: That's good.
Okay,
Sharon: yeah.
So it made itâ¦
I mean, God just worked everything out,
like financially we had, you knowâ¦
I mean, it just was at the
perfect time where we didn't have
bills and- Mm-hmm ⦠you know.
But probably after the second one,
I could feel my hair coming out.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: You know, I would run my fingers
through my hair, and I could justâ¦
There would be handfuls.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: And in the bathtub, you know.
So, uh, I think it was maybe af- right
after the third one, I knew I was gonna
lose my hair, so I went and got a wig.
That was fun.
It was like a- Okay ⦠it was like a, a
fun experience because my daughter went
with me, and we just made a day out of it.
Yeah.
And, and it was kinda fun experimenting
with different hairstyles and all that.
So there's worse things than losing
your hair, I can tell you that.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: Um, but I think I got my
wig on a Saturday and went to work,
church the next morning- Mm-hmm
even though I still had
quite a bit of hair left.
But when we got home from
church, I asked Gary to-
Jill: To shave your
Sharon: head ⦠to buzz my head.
Wow.
Because I said, "I don'tâ¦"
And he was in agreement because we- Mm-hmm
⦠didn't want it to shed everywhere.
Yeah.
And it was just stressful, and it
was like taking control of something.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: You know?
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: So we went out- in the
driveway and pulled up a chair and he
got his clippers and buzzed my hair.
He cried.
Kerrye: Aw.
Sharon: It was kind of emotional for
both of us to- Yeah ⦠just the reality.
But it was freeing, too.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: You know?
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: To just be done with it.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Jill: Yep.
Sharon: You know?
So, and it's not the end of the world.
It grows back.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Yeah.
Sharon: Yeah.
Kerrye: Um, so were you
sick or just, did you throw
Sharon: up?
I ha- this is another praise thing.
I mean, we prayed and we just asked
God to help me, like, that there be
no side effects or anything like that.
I didn't feel well.
Kerrye: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: But I did, I took the
anti-nausea drugs just like
they told me to and everything.
But, and you lose your, your
t- things don't taste good.
Yeah.
And I ⦠But no, I n- I did not throw up-
Kerrye: That's
Sharon: nice ⦠or really get
nauseated, not one time through it all.
Kerrye: Wow.
He's so good.
He takes
Sharon: care of
Kerrye: all the details.
Sharon: Yes.
I mean, I got really, like the last
couple of months were like every
three weeks and it was a drug, I
don't know the technical d- name for
it, but they call it the red devil.
Oh.
It's very powerful, and it, um, I got
really, really weak and had to have some
shots for like, you know, to keep your
blood count up and that kind of stuff.
Yeah.
But other than that- Mm ⦠I mean,
I felt like I did really well.
I mean, through, it was just
God- Yeah ⦠the whole thing.
Kerrye: Wow.
Sharon: And I just spent like six months
in my recliner, but Gary, Gary waited
on me and took very good care of me.
Kerrye: He's a good guy.
He's
Sharon: a good one.
Yeah.
Kerrye: He is.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So how long has that been?
Like, how long have you been
Sharon: cancer-free?
I, I did the chemo for six months,
had surgery like in April of that next
year, and then I did radiation for like
a month, and then still did like some
what they call im- immunotherapy drugs.
Mm-hmm.
Keytruda, if you've ever heard of that.
I did that for like every
three weeks up until a year.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: I have been cancer-freeâ¦
I feel like I've been
cancer-free from day one.
Kerrye: Yes, you have.
Sharon: But officially,
it's been two years.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Jill: Okay.
Sharon: Wow.
So, and I mean- That's just-
⦠they're just really pleased.
Yeah.
Kerrye: How
Sharon: neat.
It has been so good.
So good.
Kerrye: Yes.
Sharon: And I don't wanna be insensitive,
you know, because I know that, like
when I give my testimony, sometimes
you think, "How is this gonna make
somebody feel that has lost a loved one?"
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: You know?
And I know how that feels.
My mom passed away- Mm-hmm ⦠of colon
cancer, and then, I mean, I've had
several fa- family members, you know.
In fact- Yeah ⦠that
was kind of always a fear.
You know, like Job said, "The thing
I feared the most came upon me."
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: But I did learn-
Kerrye: Yeah
⦠Sharon: that God will
keep you through it all.
Kerrye: Yeah.
And there is no answers of why, why
is this person having a different
experience than that person and-
Sharon: Yeah.
Right I just knew that I could not worry
about that, that I had to trust God forâ¦
And I think there comes
a point in your life-
Kerrye: Mm-hmm
⦠Sharon: you know, like my dad was
so strong in faith, my parents,
you know, I was raised like that.
But when that happened, I thought,
"God, this is between me and you."
Right.
"I have a decision to make here.
Am I gonna trust you or
am I gonna live in fear?"
And I knew that I was done with fear.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: Because it's tormenting.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: You know?
It is.
And I had a moment or two, like where
I fell on my knees and I cried, "God,
you're gonna have to rescue me," you know?
No matter how old you get, you
know that, you know, none of us are
gonna get out of here alive unless
Jesus comes back and gets us first.
Right.
Jill: Exactly.
Sharon: You know, and we
all have an appointed time.
I know that, and I have peace with that.
I know to be absent from
this body is to be present.
Yes.
But I still feel like I had things to do
and- Mm-hmm ⦠people to be here for.
Kerrye: Right.
Sharon: Yeah.
You
Kerrye: know?
Right.
Sharon: Soâ¦
Kerrye: So how was, how was your
daughter that whole year and was sheâ¦
Did she have as strong as faith as you?
Did sheâ¦
Sharon: It wa- it was strange because
I think she had kinda, not backslidden
or anything, but just hadn't been,
uh, w- as, as close to
God or had felt as close.
And so, like she had beenâ¦
Like we had even done
a Bible study together.
Kerrye: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: You know, like or had
started to do one right before that.
And so she had started spending
a lot more time with the Lord.
And in that two-month period, you
know, like, I think that's when
she really started gettingâ¦
Because she, she knew, I think I
told her, but I waited quite a while.
And so she told me later, she said, "Mom,
I don't know that I could have handled it
had you been diagnosed a couple months."
Like, in that waiting-
Kerrye: Right.
Mm-hmm
⦠Sharon: I think that God prepared her to.
And because the day that, you know, I had
those tests, she stayed home from school
and fasted and prayed for me, you know.
And I d- I didn't ask her to do that.
And so, like, she told me later, she
said, "In my spirit, I knew this was
gonna be something that we were gonnaâ¦"
But she had faith too, just like I did.
Mm-hmm.
But-
Kerrye: Wow.
Sharon: Yeah.
Kerrye: Yeah.
I think-
Sharon: So.
Kerrye: I mean, you've probably impacted
more people than you know, especially
passing out, you know, encouraging things
like Dodie Osteen's book w- around people.
Have you heard back from anyone and
Sharon: Um, no, but I, I think, I mean,
like, one particular lady stands out to
me Um, more than any others, I think.
Um, and I wonder what happened to her.
I, and I wanna ask my doctor, but
I know she can't tell me probably.
Yeah.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: But she was, like, stage four.
Kerrye: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: And, like- Oh ⦠and
so I just remember sheâ¦
That I got to really talk with her.
Gary and I got to pray with her
right there, and we've gotten
to pray for several people.
People are very open.
It's like when you walk in there,
there's a connection with everybody.
I mean, there's-
Jill: Well, you all-
Sharon: You have empathy for each other.
Right.
Yeah.
Jill: You're all going
through the same things.
You're all walking, if not the
same road, a very similar road.
Sharon: Right.
Jill: And then also I think that, you
know, we're all very good about, you
know, tolerating one another's particular
beliefs, you know, but there comes a
point where when you're staring death in
the face, and you are with any cancer,
like, that's just the reality of it,
you're staring death in the face, that-
Kerrye: Yes
Jill: it becomes very real, and,
uh, you can tell me no all day long.
I don't care.
I don't believe you.
I know that at that point, God makes
himself real to you, and you know that
you have a decision to make- Yes ⦠with
the one true God, and so I think that
that's why people get very open to,
like, maybe I don't necessarilyâ¦
Like, maybe one, 'cause I do, but
maybe someone doesn't necessarily
believe in Jesus, but they'll be
open to letting you pray for them-
Yes ⦠or with them in those moments
where they wouldn't be in any other.
Yeah.
Yes.
'Cause they're staring at the
reality of separation from this
body and a very real eternity.
Sharon: And that is one, that's
one good thing that comes out
of it, is that people are open.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: You know, when you're
facing that, they're open to, like,
they want a relationship with God.
Mm-hmm.
I mean, there's very few people, and
you can tell the ones that don't.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, they just don't walk in peace.
Jill: Right.
Sharon: And I have found, I
think that's the biggest treasure
that he gives us, is peace.
Yeah.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: No matter what we face, no
matter what tomorrow holds, you know?
It just, the peace that we can walk
through and the joy no matter what.
And I honestly can say that I'm
thankful, you know, not for cancer,
but I'm thankful for the experience and
that he trusted me to go through it.
Yeah.
Because I learned in the darkest of
nights, you know, when I would lay my
head on the pillow and I would quote
Psalm 91 to myself, I still do that,
like when fear comes in, and it won't
be just fear about cancer, it's fear
Kerrye: about-
Sharon: Yeah,
Jill: whatever
⦠Sharon: dumb stuff.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: You know?
Kerrye: Mm-hmm.
I
Sharon: can quote his word.
Yeah.
He's got
Kerrye: an answer for it all.
Well, I think you are the one reason
that I listened to Dodie Osteen that
night, and I've suggested to Jill.
Sharon: Not
Kerrye: kidding.
That's like gold.
Like on YouTube, this six, seven
hours, she just talks about
scripture or reads scripture.
Like you mentioned that
in our little sis group.
Yes.
And since then I'm like,
well, I might asâ¦
I mean, I listen to that a lot when
I'm going to sleep- Yes ⦠because
why not just play scripture?
Sharon: Right.
Kerrye: And, and I
listen to Dean Caldwell.
Like both of those, I'm like-
Sharon: Oh, yeah
⦠Kerrye: which one do I wanna listen to?
Uh, while I'm sleeping.
Like and I just have it on low, but
you know, my spirit listens to it.
Oh, yeah.
Kerrye: Yeah.
So
Sharon: I would fall
asleep in my recliner.
I would turn that on YouTube,
and I mean, she does, she has up
to like six, eight hours- Yeah.
Yeah ⦠of just one
scripture after another.
Yeah.
And her story, her testimony
was so encouraging too.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: You know?
Jill: Yeah.
No, that's
Sharon: good.
She had stage four liver cancer,
and it had already metastasized and
I mean, when she was 48, I think,
and she died when she was what?
95.
Yeah.
Christ.
Something like that.
Yeah.
Kerrye: Soâ¦
But that's the reason I- She'sâ¦
Jill: Yeah
⦠Kerrye: I told you about it.
Jill: She, I, I was deathly ill
with dysentery and, um, now I don't
know if it really was dysentery.
It felt like dysentery, but Kerrye
sent me the YouTube link, and so I
was playing it, and I didn't tell Ben,
and so he woke up in the middle of
the night to some, some woman speaking
in the room, and he was so confused.
He was like, "What's happening?"
Yeah.
But it was funny.
But yeah, that was the night it
turned, like- Started getting
Sharon: better
⦠Jill: completely turned around.
Sharon: Yes.
Yeah.
It was very encouraging.
Well,
Kerrye: there's just supernatural
things that happen when you put
God's word in the atmosphere.
Yeah.
Sharon: Yeah.
And when you're going through it, you
know, I just felt like it was really
important just to saturate myself.
Yeah.
I mean, you know- Yeah ⦠just like
saturate myself in it, and healing
scriptures because I wanted to be healed.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: And he did.
Jill: He did.
Sharon: I mean, daily I
could feel that shrinking.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: Daily I could.
I
Jill: mean, that's, that's incredible.
I
Sharon: love it.
And so by the time they got
to the surgery, there wasâ¦
I mean, they took, they
have do surgery anyway.
Yeah.
But he said it was just all
dead tissue And the lady called
me the next day and I saidâ¦
You know, they call you with
a- Yeah ⦠path report.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: And I answered the phone
and I- she said, "How are you?"
And I said, "I'm fine."
And she said, "Well, you're gonna be
even better when I tell you this."
Wow.
So, you know, God is so good.
And I, you know, Iâ¦
There's no shame in medicine.
No.
There's no shame in doing
what the doctors tell you to.
Yeah.
You know?
Jill: I mean, God, God gifted us
with medical knowledge for a reason.
Sharon: Mm-hmm.
Jill: I meanâ¦
Kerrye: Yeah, and you
probably witnessed toâ¦
I mean, you did witness to people who-
Jill: Would otherwise have not- Would
heard that at all.
Kerrye: Yeah,
Jill: yeah.
You know?
They saw you walk in that peace.
They, uh, you know, there's no doubt
that people watched that, looked
at that and said, "I want that."
Sharon: Mm-hmm.
" Jill: I wanna be able to feel secure."
Sharon: I feel like God answered
that request, I guess, in my heart.
Like, like, you know, "Okay,
Lord, I believe that you're
gonna heal me, but do I do this?"
You know?
Right.
'Cause chemotherapy can
be very harsh, you know?
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: And-
Jill: Well, it's literally poison.
Sharon: Yes.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: Yes.
I mean, it kills anything- Right.
It's, it's- ⦠that reproduces
and grows back and, yes ⦠right.
It's
Jill: targeted poison, but
it is poison nonetheless.
Sharon: Yes.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: But I think it was the day
after I got that diagnosis, Gary
always gets up and he goes to his
little man cave office place, and
he reads and he prays every day.
I mean- Mm-hmm ⦠very, very
rarely does he miss a day.
Well, when Iâ¦
And he always gets up, like, at
4:00, 4:30, and I get up later.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: So I got up and
went in there and he saidâ¦
I could tell he had been praying.
And he said, "I need
to show you something."
And so we walked in the office, and he
had his Bible open, and he said, "This
is where I opened my Bible this morning."
And it was in, umâ¦
It's- First or Second Samuel,
wherever, wherever the, the
story is about David and Goliath
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: And in the margin he had
written, "What do you do if the
doctor tells you you have cancer?"
And he said, "I have no clue when I wrote
that- Oh ⦠or what context it was,"
'cause he didn't have a sermon thing.
Mm-hmm.
But that's what it said, "What do you do?"
So it led me, I started reading that.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: And I felt like God spoke
to me through that, where David went
like, "Okay, who are you to defy this?"
Jill: Right.
Mm-hmm.
Sharon: You know?
And so he goes and gets his slingshot,
and he gathers those stones.
And I thought, you know, it wasn't the
stone that killed Goliath, it was God.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: I mean, he just let Davidâ¦
But David did what he knew to do.
Yeah.
You know, he gathered-
Mm-hmm ⦠his stones.
So to me that was like- Well, and
he got five- ⦠medication ⦠when
Jill: really he only needed one.
Sharon: I know, and I thought about that-
Jill: You know?
So that's
Sharon: preparation
Jill: as well.
Sharon: Right.
So it just gave me a peace about
just doing what they told me to do.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: You know?
Just
Jill: gathering your stones.
Sharon: Okay.
I'm going to the doctor.
Yeah.
They're experts at this.
And, and my doctors were Christians.
Mm-hmm.
Like Dr.
Hagins-
Jill: Yep
⦠Sharon: prayed over me.
But even before surgery, every time I
saw him, he said, "I'm praying for you."
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: And then Dr.
Gentry was the oncologist,
and she's a believer.
And the last time I went to
see her, we spent almost the
whole time talking aboutâ¦
She was telling me about how she
was reading the Bible through.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: And I think she was
starting her second time.
Jill: Oh, wow.
Sharon: And how just the
stor- she was gettingâ¦
I mean, you could just tell she just
blossomed- Yeah ⦠talking about it, so.
Kerrye: Aw.
Sharon: That was good, too.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: You know?
Kerrye: Well, I think, you know,
it is important, like we need to
say, like God uses people sometimes
in our healing process, so.
Yeah.
You know, don't, don't shy away
from, "Well, I'm not in faith
if I'm going to the doctor."
Sharon: Right.
That's not true.
Right.
Jill: Mm-mm.
Kerrye: You know, it's not true.
Well,
Jill: and- You know
Sharon: because I think it's God.
I mean, it's not gonna work unless heâ¦
Jill: Right.
Sharon: Yeah.
There's, yeah.
He's gotta touch your body-
Yeah ⦠to respond to it.
Jill: Well,
Sharon: and, uh- You know?
⦠Jill: uh, you know, throughout the
process, you're also still praying,
like, you know- Oh, yeah ⦠"God,
lead me through," like which
decisions to make which way.
'Cause just 'cause you're saying,
"Okay, yes, we're gonna start this,"
does not mean like you've said, "Okay,
yes, doctor, now you're in charge."
Sharon: Right.
Jill: That's, that's not accurate.
You know?
Right.
We're all in charge of
it, and you could'veâ¦
You know, if God led you to say
like, "No, we're not doing the red
devil drug," then you don't do it.
Sharon: Right.
Jill: You know?
Sharon: But
Jill: he didn't say
Sharon: that Yeah.
'Cause he was just so faithful, and I, I
think, you know, other than losing my hair
and food didn't taste good for a while.
You can tell it tastes good now.
Kerrye: No, no, no.
Sharon: I like it.
Yeah.
Kerrye: I think it's interesting that,
you know, at the very beginningâ¦
Well, I, you know, I, I know
Satan is not omniscient.
I know that.
But he does know things.
We do have w- watchers, you know, we do.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Kerrye: Um, and it's interesting
that one of the first things he made
you question is, "Did God say that?"
Yes.
'Cause that's the oldest
trick in the book.
Yeah.
Like, you know- It's his go-to.
Yeah.
He told you this- Yeah ⦠but,
but now they're saying this.
Yeah.
You
know?
Sharon: Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Kerrye: And I think he
wanted you to be like, "Oh."
Did he?
You know, 'cause I've been there too.
Like, would, did I just
put that in my head?
Was that really God?
You know, I've been
those when I know it was.
Sharon: It was God.
I think a lot of times we feel like
that, no matter what God speaks to us.
Even when he just speaks it, I mean,
we just think, "Was that really you?"
You know?
Mm-hmm.
"Or was that just me desiring that?"
You know?
Uh-
Jill: Yeah.
But
Sharon: I- Well,
Jill: 'cause it's powerful.
Like- Mm-hmm ⦠his, his word is true.
It will not come back void, so if
you grab hold of it, then there's n-
there's nothing left there, you know?
Mm-hmm.
So if he can get you to doubt it, then
he, you won't grab hold of your promise.
Sharon: I think there are things that
God speaks to us though that we justâ¦
I mean, like that.
It just wouldn't go away.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: I mean, I just went- Well, it
Kerrye: lines up with his word too.
That,
Sharon: yeah.
It brought me peace.
And to know I found a
scripture with those exactâ¦
And I thought, "Hmm, that's why."
Yeah.
Jill: Exactly.
Sharon: And I should've
looked it up right away- Yeah
but I didn't.
Mm-hmm.
I just thought, "Okay, I think I heard
from the Lord, and I'm just not gonnaâ¦
It's just a cyst," you know?
And- Mm-hmm ⦠so, but I just know
that he will bring you through anything,
Kerrye: you
Sharon: know?
Kerrye: Yes, he will.
Sharon: Yep.
Jill: He's faithful.
Sharon: And that there's nothing
to fear because he's, he's the And,
and those scriptures, you know, we
did that Bible study about, uhâ¦
What was the name of that Bible study that
guy did about the ta- it was on Psalm 23.
Kerrye: Uh, don't give the enemy- Oh,
Sharon: a seat at your
table ⦠seat at the table.
Yeah.
Yes.
Well, I would quote Psalms 23- Mm-hmm
⦠every night almost, and when I would
get to that part, like, "You prepare
a table before me in the presence of
my enemies," and I just right then I'd
think, "Lord, I'm eating right now.
You are- Yeah ⦠in this
room, and my enemiesâ¦"
You know, He didn't take
me immediately out of it.
Jill: Mm-mm.
Sharon: But He just made a way,
and He anointed my head with oil.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: And I think you're anointing my
head with oil, but, you know, like the
shepherds would anoint their sheep's head-
Jill: Mm-hmm
⦠Sharon: to keep the insects- Yeah
and the things that would bore, and I
feel like that's how He anoints your head.
When you speak His word, it anoints
your brain, and you can't even
think those fearful thoughts.
Kerrye: Right.
Sharon: Yeah.
You know?
Kerrye: So- That's awesome
⦠Sharon: if that makes sense.
Kerrye: Oh, it does.
Yeah.
It's so good.
So what would youâ¦
We ask this a lot.
What would you say to someone
who is wondering how God speaks?
Like, a, a lot of times, and I've
said this, kids will be like,
"Well, how do we know it's God?"
And I always say, "It
lines up with the Word."
Sharon: Mm-hmm.
Kerrye: You have to know the Word.
But, you know, I think a lot of people
are searching, "How do I hear Him?"
You know?
What would you say if
someone asked you that?
Sharon: I think the first
step is reading the Word.
Mm-hmm.
And I th- I, I know that everything
that He has told me in my life, that I
felt like He spoke specifically for me,
and there's been more times, you know,
through the years that it did align,
and then I could go to His Word, and
I could back that up with scripture.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: Like, "You're gonna have to
lead me where your Word says that."
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: You know?
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: But in, in, like,
everyday thing, I, I think, like,
peace has to be an umpire, too.
Like, if you're praying about a
decision, like, "Should I take this
job, or should I take this job?"
Or- Right ⦠or whatever it is,
I think God leads with peace.
Kerrye: Yeah.
You
Sharon: know?
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: Like, He leads us- One
Kerrye: of the last things
He said to His disciples.
Sharon: Yeah.
Kerrye: You know, "Peace
I leave with you."
Sharon: Yes.
Kerrye: Mm-hmm.
"My peace I give you," you know?
Sharon: Right, and if we're truly
seeking Him, I think, and His will,
you know, because sometimes I think
we really want stuff that we think
that we really don't need maybe.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: But there'll be something there.
When you're His child, He's
just gonna take care of you.
Kerrye: Right.
Sharon: You know?
Jill: Yeah.
Kerrye: Oh, yeah.
That's really good.
Jill: And I like it a lot.
Kerrye: Me too,
Jill: yeah.
Kerrye: Yeah.
I think it's, that's-- Even when I
ask that question, it always comes
back to the Word, and I, I know
people have a hard time understanding
the Word, especially kids.
But I say read it anyway or play it.
I tell the kids to play it because some,
you know, they struggle reading sometimes.
Sharon: Mm-hmm.
Kerrye: It's definitely with understanding
the Word, and it's so easy, easy to
find audio, free audio versions online.
And I tell them, "Go do this.
Go listen to it.
Just play it.
You don't even have to understand it."
Sharon: Right.
"Just
Kerrye: play it out loud."
Jill: Yeah.
Kerrye: It's, it changes things.
Sharon: I really do think that
listening to the Word is almost
more powerful than reading it.
Jill: I do.
Sharon: So like when you getâ¦
Like I have an iPad, and I read
the Word on that, but I play it and
listen to it at the same time because
he said, "Faith comes by hearing,
and hearing by the Word of God."
Yeah.
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: So I think it'sâ¦
And then s- hearing yourself speak it.
Yeah.
There is power in that.
Jill: Yep.
Sharon: I have spoken scripture, you
know, over my family, over myself,
over situations that I could feel power
when I would speak God's Word over it.
Jill: Yeah.
Mm-hmm.
Sharon: You know?
That it's notâ¦
Because he's just not gonna
let it come back void.
Exactly.
Yeah.
It's going to accomplish
what he sends it to do.
Yep.
But we have to speak it
and declare it, I think.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: You know?
Claim it.
Kerrye: The devil does
not want you to do that.
I re- No ⦠it reminded
me of a dream I had once.
Um, well, I don't think it was a dream,
but I'm gonna say a dream 'cause it's
too weird to say it wasn't a dream,
'cause I was definitely asleep, but
I feel like it was an experience.
But I was scared, and I felt
like something was sitting
on my chest, you know?
Mm-hmm.
And, um, then I got mad, and I
said, "In the name of Jesus, leave."
And I quoted a scripture,
and, um, I, I couldn't say it.
I, I was garbled, like, ugh, you know?
I think I was- Uh-huh ⦠half
asleep, you know, just trying to.
Yeah.
And then I said it, and that thing,
whatever it was, put its hand
on my mouth And I was like- Wow
"Okay."
So I started I knew- I don't
Jill: know if you know the ruffle
that just went up, like ooh.
Kerrye: Well, and then I s- I,
I just kinda was like, "Okay."
I signed Jesus, 'cause
you know how you sign it?
Wow.
Sharon: Yes.
Jill: You
Kerrye: know?
And I was like, "You're not stopping me."
And so I did that, and then it was
like a smoke, it just left, and
the weight lifted and I could talk.
And that's when I remember
feeling like I was awake.
Jill: Yeah.
Kerrye: Like, and I, and it wasâ¦
I don't know.
I haveâ¦
It's so vivid.
Like, you just- Mm-hmm ⦠I just don't
remember details of dreams usually for
this long, 'cause this was years ago.
But I do remember that.
When you said it, I was like,
"Yeah, it's, it's the spoken-
Sharon: Yes
Kerrye: word that he was like, 'Nope.'"
Sharon: And sometimes you can't think
of anything else to say but Jesus.
Yes.
But he's there.
And that's good enough.
Kerrye: That's good enough.
But
Jill: that's good enough.
Sharon: Yeah.
Jill: Exactly.
Sharon: I know my daughter Lisa told
me when she was in Chi Alpha Ministry,
and she was in Wyoming for a few years.
Well, you know howâ¦
I don't know if y'all have
ever been to w- Wyoming.
I'm sure you probably have.
Yeah, I have.
But- But I have not ⦠long roads,
no, and the wind- Yes ⦠can justâ¦
Anyway, she probably wasn't paying close
attention 'cause she was on a long drive
and looked off, and anyway, overcorrected
and she was, like, in a little SUV.
Kerrye: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: And it flipped.
It started- Oh my gosh ⦠rolling.
And she said, "Mom, all I
could think of was justâ¦"
And she said, "I shouted Jesus
from the top of my lungs.
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus."
It broke every window in her vehicle.
I mean, it totaled, totally
tote- totaled her vehicle.
Mm.
And she came out, I meanâ¦
Just fine.
I think they checked her out at the
hospital, but yes, she was not injured.
And I- Wow ⦠just
know the Lord heard her.
Yeah.
I mean-
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: Yeah.
So- Yeah.
Jill: Sometimes-
Sharon: That's all you
need ⦠oh yeah, just Jesus.
Yeah.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: And then sometimes I can'tâ¦
You know, if Iâ¦
I just plead the blood.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: I do that a lot too.
I plead his blood because I feel
like, you know, he can't cross a, a-
Kerrye: He can't cross
Sharon: the bloodline
blood
Kerrye: line.
Sharon: I mean- Mm-mm ⦠it's powerful.
No.
Yeah, and there's power in his name.
There's power in his word.
There's power in his blood.
Kerrye: Yeah.
So.
That's very true.
Yeah.
I love that.
Sharon: Yeah.
Kerrye: That's good.
Jill: I'm just soaking it in.
Sharon: Yeah.
It's so good, you just wanna like- Like,
Jill: oh
⦠Kerrye: s- you do.
You just wanna sit there and soak in it
and chew on what you've shared, just like-
Jill: Yeah.
Kerrye: Yeah.
He's, his faithfulness to us
is- It's incredible ⦠it's
Jill: unmatched.
It's, it's overwhelming when
you stop and think about it.
It's just, it's overwhelming.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: And there are so many scriptures
in the Bible that just teaches us
what he thinks about his own word.
Kerrye: Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Sharon: You know, not only that my word
won't come back void, but it said he
watches over his word to perform it.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
I mean- That's a powerful
Sharon: verse ⦠I would
challenge everybody.
But one of my favorites is Jeremiah.
I think it's Jeremiah 23:29, where he
says, "Is my word not like fire, like a
hammer that breaks the rock into pieces?"
That is so powerful to me.
Yeah.
And one of my favorites,
because I can justâ¦
When we pray, we're using a hammer.
When we use scripture-
Jill: Yeah
⦠Sharon: and it will break
whatever situation is.
Mm-hmm.
It's gonna break it.
We may have to pound for a while.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
Sharon: You know?
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: But every time the pound, it
gets a little weaker and a little weaker.
Kerrye: Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Sharon: You know?
Kerrye: Have we talked y'all into
saying the word out loud enough?
Sharon: Well- Yeah.
Please.
Yeah.
Read it, quote it, declare it.
Listen to it.
Yeah.
Yes.
Soak it in.
Yeah.
His word is alive, it's living,
it's more powerful than anything.
Kerrye: Yeah.
I think, yes, please make it a practice,
and I always ⦠You know, I know
that the kids are not, most kids are
not in control of their schedule and,
and I said, "You don't need long."
Like, your- Oh, no ⦠your
attention span is- Yeah ⦠not long.
But if you can do anything,
pray, read, you know, listen,
um, to it just for five minutes.
Start with five minutes.
Sharon: You know?
And memorizing-
Kerrye: Mm-hmm
⦠Sharon: like little scriptures and like
just ⦠Because you will be surprised
at how God will use, like, you know,
just say, "Okay, Lord, I'm gonna
memorize this scripture this week."
How God, it, it's like in conversations-
Yeah ⦠all of a sudden that'll
be so- Yeah ⦠appropriate for
you to share that scripture.
Yep.
Yep.
You know?
Yeah.
And then he'll, it'll come back, like
when you, you know- When you need
it ⦠he'll, he'll help you recall it.
Kerrye: Yes.
Yeah.
Sharon: Yeah.
Kerrye: Yeah.
I remember my mom had that little
bread box with the scriptures.
Did y'all have one of those?
Sharon: Mm-hmm.
Kerrye: Like, you'd pick
out a little scripture.
It was a bread.
Sharon: How
Kerrye: cute.
Oh, no.
Plastic.
Sharon: Yeah.
Kerrye: And
Jill: she-
Kerrye: The Ballard house did
Jill: not have one of those.
Kerrye: She would make Mickey and I
read one of those on the way to school,
and it had a front and back scripture.
And I don't know why that was
annoying to me at some point.
Like, I was like, "Mm."
Oh, you were a
Sharon: kid.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Yeah.
You're just- So we found out that
one of the blue ones, because
they were all different colors,
only had one scripture on it.
It was blank on the other side.
Jill: So you would go after
the one- He would, like,
Kerrye: dig through it and be like, "Oh,
there's so many blue ones that youâ¦"
And when ⦠I just specifically
remember when Mickey got the scripture,
the one without it, he was like,
just made a face at me like, "Uh, uh.
I got the one."
And, and then he ⦠I didn't find this
out till later, but he bent the corner.
So he would always pick it and I
was like- So he could cheat ⦠"How
are you getting this every time?"
Sharon: Sometimes I th- I was so mad
at him ⦠can't you just imagine
the Lord looking down and just
smiling, like getting such a kick.
Right?
Saying, "One of these days
you kids are gonna love this."
Yes.
Yeah.
What's funny is- "You're
gonna love my word."
Yeah.
Jill: I just, I wonder if- Do you
remember which scripture it was?
Kerrye: No, I wonder if Mickie does.
I wonder if Mickie does.
He got it the most.
I didn't.
I was a- Yeah, that's true ⦠dumb kid.
It's probably, like,
Jill: one of
Sharon: the things that
just sticks out the most.
I wonder
Kerrye: if she still has that.
She might.
Yeah.
I'll have to ask her.
Remind me to ask her today, and I'll see
how- I will for sure ⦠she turned out.
No, I sold it in yard sale.
But I don't know, I just remember that.
But I, but I think about that and
I'm like, "That was a good thing
for her to do," like, you know.
Yeah.
And I would, you know, when I, when we had
a 15-minute, with my kids, drive to school
and I was like, "We're gonna listen.
We're gonna start listening to Bible."
15 minutes in a year you can have it
done if you listen 15 minutes a day.
So of course started
with the New Testament.
Boy, some of those stories.
I know.
"Mama, what's circumcision?"
I'm like- Oh, you
started ⦠"What is this?"
And I was like, "Um," you know,
you're in traffic and you're like,
"Oh, we'll talk about it later."
But also some of those
Old Testaments read like-
Jill: Scandalous.
Like
Kerrye: it-
scandalous stories.
Yeah.
And I'm like-
Jill: Yep
⦠Kerrye: "Okay, I shouldn't-" Pretty
Jill: racy
Kerrye: sometimes.
So I would- Yes.
Yes.
I remember specifically switching to
King James because I was in The Message.
I was like, "I want
them to understand it."
Mm-hmm.
And then I was like, "Nope,
I'm not listening to this
in The Message with them."
Uh-huh.
You know, 'cause I was like,
"This is getting too much."
But yeah, we, we listened to
it and then I was glad thatâ¦
I mean, I'm glad I did it because it did
plant a seed in their heart, but- Yeah.
Some of those Old Testament stories-
That is funny ⦠I'm just like, "Eh."
But like- Yes ⦠so and so and
sleeping with so and so and, you know.
Jill: Yes.
Yes, I know.
I don't know.
I know what you're referring to.
Sharon: But he loved
them and he forgave them.
Yes.
Yeah.
And he used them and- Well, and thank
Kerrye: goodness he did because it
gives all the rest of us hope 'cause-
Oh, yeah ⦠if they messed up that
catastrophically- They were all
Sharon: imperfect.
Kerrye: Yeah.
I
Sharon: mean, think
about all of them- Again.
Kerrye: Yeah
⦠Sharon: as done somehow.
Kerrye: Yes.
Every single one of them.
Yeah.
Sharon: Yes.
Kerrye: Yeah.
So I'm just gonna ask this.
We've been doing a series
on jerks of the Bible.
Ooh, yeah.
Who do you think is a jerk of the Bible?
We've done Jonah.
Jill: And we've recorded another
one, but it's not out yet.
Kerrye: Yes, we
Sharon: did.
A jerk of the Bible?
Kerrye: I mean, 'cause
we were talking about-
Sharon: Somebody we didn't like?
Kerrye: No.
Well, no.
Jonah is a- Yeah ⦠prophet,
but you know how he acted.
Just somebody that didn't- He was just
so mad that God saved Nineveh, and
he ended- Actually ⦠mad, you know?
Jill: Honestly, we'll have already put
out the second jerks by the time this
comes out- Okay ⦠so we can tell you.
Oh.
The second jerk is Peter Because
he- 'Cause he's just, you know,
abrasive and brash, and he chopped
a dude's ear off and- Uh-huh.
You know what?
I'm not saying they're jerks.
Jesus had to constantly be
like, "Listen," you know?
Just did some
Kerrye: jerky things.
Sharon: The one that comes to my mind
is Thomas, just because he was- Oh,
yeah ⦠he doubted all the time.
Yeah.
And I'm not gonna believe until I see.
Yeah.
You know, I mean- That's so
true ⦠you know those kinda people.
Yeah.
You know, like, "Mm."
Oh, that's not right.
"Let me look."
Okay.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So-
Kerrye: I was thinking like,
yeah, I mean, that's a good one.
Sharon: Prove it.
Kerrye: But I was like- Yeah.
⦠Sharon: Samson kind of-
Oh ⦠was arrogant and yeah,
Jill: he really- Yeah,
Sharon: you
Jill: really have a thing
for Samson right now.
I do.
I'm just like- Like, you
really wanna do Samson next.
I
Sharon: do.
Kerrye: I want to.
Mm.
But there's others that we haven't,
Sharon: uh- It's really frustrating to
read his story, though, and how weak he
was after, I mean, you know, he thought-
I mean, I just feel like he's a dum-dum.
Can you not?
Yeah, me too.
Jill: He's the weakest.
Can you not?
Sharon: After the first time-
Girl, did you not see that?
Exactly ⦠after the second time,
Jill: you know?
Exactly.
I'm like, "Psst, this
girl ain't good for you."
Sharon: That was
Jill: his
Kerrye: weakness.
Like what?
Yeah.
That's his weakness
Jill: of women.
I meanâ¦
Sharon: Well, her- Her in
particular, I guess ⦠yeah.
Jill: I guess we're all blind
to the ones we love, I guess.
Yes.
Yeah.
But cripes, Samson, get it together, man.
Kerrye: We've talked about, like, we
can't think of many women who were God
followers who were jerks, though, but-
Jill: No, the women in there that
were jerks were clearly not the God
Kerrye: followers.
Yes.
Yeah.
Jill: They were-
Kerrye: Right ⦠well, they
Jill: were fully evil.
We'll have to think
Kerrye: about that.
Yeah,
Sharon: Jezebel, yeah.
Yeah.
Kerrye: I mean- Yeah, we're talking about-
the dogs ate
Sharon: her.
That's how bad she was
⦠Jill: who
Kerrye: were God followers.
That's what we're trying to-
Jill: Yeah.
Kerrye: I mean, we're not
doing a episode on- Yeah,
Jill: like, obviously, like, the bad
guys of the Bible are, are clearly jerks,
but they're obvious jerks, so we're-
Yeah ⦠we're doing the good guy jerks.
Yeah.
Kerrye: Yeah, I feel like Jonah's gonna
have a talk with us when we get up there.
Like, "Why?
Why'd you do that?"
Jill: "Why'd I have to be the first?"
And you know Peter is also
gonna be right behind him going,
"Yeah, why wasn't I the first?"
"I was a bigger jerk than Jonah."
He'd be in competition.
Sharon: Exactly.
But isn't it comforting to know
that, you know, they were so
imperfect and like Peter- Yes.
Yeah
he's the rock.
He's-
Jill: Yeah.
Sharon: God still chose to use him.
Jill: Yes.
Exactly.
Over and over again, even in the middle
of him being a bonehead, he's stillâ¦
I just, in my mind's eye, and I
know we talk about it, but, like, he
chopped dude bro's ear off, and I just
know Jesus, like, rolled his eyes.
Like, in the middle of being hauled
off to get all of this done- Mm-hmm
to save the entire universe,
I now have to fix an ear.
Thanks, Pete.
Sharon: Like And then he denied him.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Right after that.
Kerrye: Yep.
Sharon: Yeah.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Jill: "Ugh, I won't deny
you, but here you go.
Chop his ears off, and I'll watch."
Right.
Just the whole
Kerrye: thing.
Right.
Yeah.
Jill: I don't know.
Bible's funny.
Kerrye: Okay.
Well, we also ask our peop- the people
who are on here, I'm sure you've heard,
but, um, if you could go back and
observe a Bible story, um, besides the
crucifixion and resurrection, 'cause we
figure everybody wants to watch that, um,
what would you want to go back and watch?
Sharon: Um, like if I could be there?
Kerrye: Yeah.
Yeah.
I think
Sharon: I'd like to be in the upper room
Kerrye: when
Sharon: the Holy Spirit came.
Yes.
Ooh.
Kerrye: Yes.
Like in Acts 2.
Sharon: Yes.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: And I'm hoping we can
experience that again in church.
Yes.
Wouldn't that be awesome?
That would be.
Yes.
Like glory would just fall and-
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: Yes.
Kerrye: Man.
I mean, people have experienced- Mm-hmm
that s- I mean, I've read.
Oh,
Sharon: yeah.
Kerrye: I haven't, haven't
been in that kind of church.
I mean, how powerful.
To
Sharon: actually be there where
Kerrye: tongues of fire.
My goodness.
Yeah.
I remember reading in the history
book of RFA, I'm gonna have
to find that story, but, um-
Jill: I wanna see the history book of RFA.
Like, where is that?
Kerrye: They thought the church was
on fire because they- Wow ⦠saw a
red glow on top, people passing by.
Yes.
I'm gonna find that.
Jill: Yeah.
Kerrye: And then there were two
people in the original building, which
is not there anymore, were sitting
outside and, um, a tree in front of
the church looked like it was on fire.
It wasn't, but he, they described
like red going up and down the tree.
Like a burning bush.
Yes.
And, um, scared them, and they ran
into the church like, "Help," you know?
Jill: Yeah.
Kerrye: I don't know
what happened after that.
I'll have to go back and read, but
we have those books laying around.
Oh,
Sharon: yeah.
Mm.
I'd like to read those too.
Jill: I
Kerrye: know.
I'm
Jill: like, I did not know
we had a history of RFA, but-
Kerrye: Yes.
Lord, just- It's a good book ⦠let it
Sharon: happen again.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Yeah.
I'm ready.
And it will.
I feel, not just in our church, but-
Sharon: Right ⦠everywhere.
Kerrye: Right.
Nation, new, worldwide.
Yes.
I feel like we're getting
to that point, so.
Jill: Yep.
Sharon: Oh, I think
Kerrye: so
Sharon: too.
Kerrye: Also, if you could have any
superpower, what would you wanna have?
Sharon: Um, I've heard a few of these,
but w- the one I thought of the other
day when I, I think the first time
I heard y'all ask somebody that and
I thought, "What would I wanna do?"
And you remember like the show
Bewitched when she would like- Yes.
⦠blink and her house would be cleaned?
Jill: Yes.
Sharon: Oh, yeah.
I think I would like that one.
Yeah.
Yes.
Jill: Mm-hmm.
We've talked about
Sharon: that.
Or like speed it up, you know, like
have her vacuum- Yeah ⦠cleaner
going on, you know, by itself.
Yeah.
And the broom sweeping by itself.
Jill: Yep.
Yeah.
Definitely,
Kerrye: that's
Sharon: a good one.
That would be nice.
Uh-huh.
Yeah.
That's
Jill: a good one.
This is, this is the thing.
We're all practical.
The women are like, "I'd
like to have enough.
I'd like to be able to do all
the things at the same time."
And the men are like, "I wanna fly."
Sharon: Yeah.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Yeah.
That's, that is true.
Jill: I want super strength.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: Yeah.
Jill: Or to see or,
Sharon: you
Kerrye: know.
Yeah.
Like s- That's funny ⦠see
across another room.
Yeah.
Sharon: Yeah.
Jill: Amazing.
Kerrye: Well, thank you
so much for being here.
Well, thank you for
Sharon: having me.
I,
Kerrye: I really enjoyed it.
And this is gonna be one
that I think about, you know.
It's a very thought-provoking.
Jill: It is.
Kerrye: Yeah.
Sharon: Yeah.
Kerrye: Very good.
Sharon: His word is true.
Kerrye: Yep.
Sharon: Believe it.
And
Kerrye: you should read
it or listen to it.
Sharon: Yes.
Read it- Yes
⦠Jill: and listen to it and speak
Sharon: it.
It makes all the difference.
I mean, it's our offensive weapon.
Yeah.
It's our defensive weapon.
I mean
⦠Jill: It's a healing little soothing balm.
Like it's, it's just, it's
whatever you need it to be.
Yes.
Yeah, in your life in that moment.
It's everything.
Sharon: Yes.
Jill: Okay.
Well, thank you so much.
Sharon: Thank y'all.
We'll talk to
Jill: you later.
Okay, bye.
