IN THE NEWS TODAY,

IN CAMPUS NEWS,
The president of the UW Board of Regents named the 23-member committee to help decide the next chancellor on Thursday. Regent Amy Bogost will chair the search alongside vice chair Professor Annie Jones. The committee will meet in the coming weeks to begin their search, working with UW Human Resources staff, the Office of the Board of Regents and search firm Isaacson. Bogost said “It will be our goal to find a leader that accelerates the university’s reputation for excellence in teaching, research discovery, and public service while driving innovation in a rapidly changing higher education environment,”. The committee will find and interview candidates, creating a list which is then sent to a Special Regent Committee for further consideration. After this, the committee will make a hiring recommendation for the Board of Regents to review one last time. The board is selecting a replacement for UW Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin who is leaving to become Columbia University’s next president.

IN LOCAL NEWS,
The Dane County Humane Society is helping 500 dogs be placed that they received from Ridglan Farms. Ridglan Farms said Wednesday that it would transfer ownership of 1,500 of its dogs to the Center for a Humane Economy and Big Dog Ranch Rescue. Staff and volunteers will be providing veterinary care to the dogs that have been transferred and ensure they are placed in shelters and rescues. DCHS has created an interest form for potential adopters or fosters and will publicize updates on the dogs on its websites and social channels. This comes after a failed raid attempt by activists on April 18. These protestors attempted to break into the facility and remove dogs, however no one was able to break in successfully. Around 25 people were arrested on April 18. These attempts were from protestors who have allegedly found documents of animal cruelty at Ridglan Farms.

IN STATE NEWS,

According to the AAA, WI’s average gas price has hit $4.17 for regular, an increase of 48 cents per gallon from last week Thursday. The national average is $4.30, up 27 cents per gallon from last week. On top of the Iran War, the Whiting Refinery in Indiana has been subject to labor disputes in recent weeks, decreasing total regional production. BP ‌barred about 800 workers represented by the United Steelworkers union on March 19, after months of negotiations failed to produce a new labor contract, bringing in temporary workers to keep the 440,000 barrel of oil / day plant running. On top of the labor dispute, the Indiana plant suffered from a loss of power on Sunday, dropping output, further driving up MidWestern gas prices. Prices in MKE and Madison are above average at $4.21 and $4.25 respectively. The highest recorded average gas prices in WI came in 2022 at $4.92, and we still remain 70 cents per gallon below that price range. Economic pressures on gas prices are unlikely to decrease as global markets continue to feel the shock from the Iran war.

IN NATIONAL NEWS,
Congress votes to end the government shutdown, sending a DHS funding bill to Trump on Thursday. The Senate bill approved will fund the DHS and has ended the 75-day shutdown. Trump vowed that he would sign this bill into law if passed, and this bill passed “by voice” through shouts from members of Congress. The bill will not provide funding for ICE after Democrats refused to pass a bill continuing its funding. ICE and border enforcement did hold funding during the shutdown, and Republicans are likely to try to continue funding. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin warned lawmakers that if they did not pass funding by Thursday, emergency funds would run out. This would mean thousands of workers would have gone without pay. House and Senate lawmakers will be taking a weeklong recess starting this Thursday evening. Once the bill is signed into law by Trump, DHS agencies will be funded through Sep. 30. Some agencies include the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Coast Guard, TSA and the Secret Service. This comes after months of back and forth between Democrats and Republicans in the House. On February 14, Democrats enacted a forced DHS shutdown after Republicans would not reform ICE and its actions. In late March, the Senate unanimously approved legislation which funded the DHS apart from ICE and Border Patrol. At the time, House Speaker Mike Johnson called the plan “a joke”. On Wednesday, the House passed a budget resolution to fund both agencies until the end of Trump’s term, which led Republicans to agree to the deal on Thursday.
