Real skin, real science, real confidence with Dr. Zain Hussain. Welcome to- Skin Side Out.
[00:00:08] Speaker 2: Welcome to Skin Side Out. I'm your host, Dr. Zaeem, with Heather and Courtney. So it's that time of the year again. It's back to school, it's a time of adjustments schedules are changing. You know, the summer days are long gone, and now we're back to the stress of school for parents and kids.
So today we thought it would be great to go over a survival guide for going back to school. You know, this is more geared for our, you know, high school and college age kids, but I think these tips will really help you out. So let's dive right in.
[00:00:39] Speaker 3: First and foremost, we want to create tips that are simple and realistic, not something that you can, that you would get overwhelmed with or, um, not easily be able to do.
Um, so I guess tip number one is kind of right on that topic. So not starting 12 new products at once. , Don't do 12 pr- products in general. Yeah. Simple and easy is the biggest thing. Your skin actually likes the simplicity a lot more- Mm-hmm ... versus being overwhelmed, and then, you know, you're breaking out or you've got something else going on and- Mm
or maybe your products aren't sitting well because you've got too many things on. And a lot of times, you know, you're rushing to get out of bed and eat breakfast and get to school, and you don't need that long step skincare routine. So just keep it basic. Gentle cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen. That's really all you need
[00:01:33] Speaker 2: in the morning.
I think that principle applies to life in general.
[00:01:35] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:01:36] Speaker 2: I'm a big believer in KISS: keep it simple, stupid. Mm-hmm.
[00:01:39] Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
[00:01:39] Speaker 2: So just keep it as simple as possible, and your life will be less complex and- Mm-hmm ... hopefully less anxiety and worry. Is
[00:01:45] Speaker: it simple, stupid, or keep it simple, stupid?
[00:01:50] Speaker 2: I guess you can interpret it either way.
[00:01:51] Speaker 3: Or is it keep it stupid simple?
[00:01:54] Speaker: Oh, yeah, I like that.
[00:01:55] Speaker 2: Oh, you can
[00:01:55] Speaker: do that. Okay.
[00:01:56] Speaker 3: I've heard it that way, though. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:01:59] Speaker 2: All right. So next tip, Courtney.
[00:02:01] Speaker: Yeah. I'm not one to be speaking about this, I'll be honest, but tip number two, don't sleep in your makeup. You sleep
[00:02:06] Speaker 3: in your makeup.
[00:02:07] Speaker: I don't wear makeup is the thing, so what I- And
[00:02:09] Speaker 2: it's naturally beautiful.
[00:02:10] Speaker: No. I'm naturally lazy. Um, I very rarely wear makeup. If I'm going, like, out to a dinner, I might throw, like, a tinted moisturizer on and, like- You don't
[00:02:21] Speaker 3: wash it off
[00:02:23] Speaker: Here's my problem, is that I think I have narcolepsy.
[00:02:27] Speaker 2: Oh, let's add this to the list.
[00:02:28] Speaker: Yeah. It's, it's on there. It's on the list. And, um, when it's nighttime I'm
And my friends, like, it's funny, like one of my newer friends, we just went away on a trip, and yeah, I did wear makeup that, that night we went out. And she's like, "Courtney, I'm flabbergasted that you're the person that I'm handing the Neutrogena makeup wipe," like, "I'm already in bed," like- "Don't talk to me," like, "I'm done."
But she's like, "I'm shocked that you're not more, um, on top of this."
[00:02:53] Speaker 3: Wow.
[00:02:54] Speaker: So I don't know. I, I don't wear a lot of makeup, and so, and when I'm tired, I'm tired. So I do keep a pack of Neutrogena makeup wipes next to my bed, and I'll do like a quick, 'cause I think that's better than nothing. But do as I say, not as I do.
[00:03:07] Speaker 2: Does it not feel kinda gross?
[00:03:09] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:03:10] Speaker: I'm not like caking makeup on, you know? Like I said, I wear like- Maybe a tinted moisturizer
[00:03:17] Speaker 3: Mascara ...
[00:03:18] Speaker: mascara. Mm. But my mascara's tubing, so I do- Oh ... I can take my tubing mascara off just by rubbing my eyelashes. What the hell is tubing mascara? It looks like spiders. It I was telling, I was telling Dr.
Omnes- It's a thing ... it's a th- it's actually like- ... the best mascara you can get, and if you rub your eyes, it will, like, come down. It'll
[00:03:36] Speaker 3: come out in tubes, like-
[00:03:38] Speaker: Yeah. It's like a- Yeah ... oil-based, so it doesn't af- it doesn't affect your eyelashes as much. Like- But as it dries, it's, like, encasing- Yeah ... your eyelash.
This
[00:03:46] Speaker 2: seems horrifying.
[00:03:48] Speaker: So you can rub it, and you'll get little, like, spidery, like, things coming off your eye. Wow. But it's better for your eyes because it's not... Like, regular mascara is really harsh on the eyelashes. You don't have
[00:04:00] Speaker 3: to scrub and scrub and
[00:04:01] Speaker: scrub-
[00:04:01] Speaker 3: Yeah ...
[00:04:02] Speaker 2: to get it off. I mean, how do you feel, like, with-
with you have makeup on your skin?
[00:04:05] Speaker 3: Oh, I, I cannot sleep in makeup.
[00:04:06] Speaker 2: Like, I can't even sleep- Even mascara ... without, like, taking off my sunscreen.
[00:04:10] Speaker 3: Yeah. Like, I feel like- No, yeah, I can relate.
[00:04:11] Speaker: Well, let me tell you how my regimen usually goes after work. I, I, I'm not a night, I'm a morning person to a T. So at night, so when I come home from work, I immediately go to the gym, 'cause if I don't do that, then I won't go.
And then once I come home from the gym, I immediately get in the shower, I wash my face, I do all of my skincare at that point. It's, like, 6:30. Mm. That way I'm done for the rest of the night. Oh, okay. So I'm like Cinderella. The clock hits 9:00 PM- ... nothing else is getting done.
[00:04:38] Speaker 3: I feel like we're- I'm asleep ... I would say I'm a morning person, too, but I feel like we're very different morning people.
So Courtney, Courtney sent me an audio message this morning, and she was like-
[00:04:49] Speaker: It's like 6:30
[00:04:51] Speaker 3: AM. ... "So I'm thinking I'm gonna, I guess I'll go do my hair." Like, she was wrapping up the message, "I guess I'll go do my hair." And I'm over there, like, walking the dogs, getting the garden done. Like- Yeah. ... I'm like, boom, boom, boom.
And she's like, "Yada, yada, yada." Yeah,
[00:05:07] Speaker: I was, like, laying in- She's, like, relaxing ... it was, like, 6:30. I was lay- I'd already been scrolling for, like, 30 minutes. I was like, "All right, time to get up." Yeah. My
[00:05:12] Speaker 3: mornings are very different. Oh my God. And
[00:05:13] Speaker 2: my mornings are very different than yours. Yeah. I get woken up by screaming kids.
[00:05:18] Speaker: Yeah, I don't have that problem anymore. Although my cats were annoying me this morning. I had to lock them out, so. But yeah, wash your face. I would say at a bare minimum, a nice college tip, they make, Neutrogena and many other brands make the, um, individual- Mm ... makeup remover wipes. So you can keep one, like, in your purse or like- Mm-hmm
yeah, next to your bedstand, um, or next to your, on your bedstand. You know, things like that. And I would say at a bare minimum, that is the way to go. But yeah, s- you should be washing your face-
[00:05:46] Speaker 3: Yeah ...
[00:05:47] Speaker: after a night out.
[00:05:47] Speaker 3: I like micellar water versus Neutrogena wipes Preference.
[00:05:52] Speaker: Mm. W- I'm thinking ease. If I'm in bed-
[00:05:56] Speaker 3: True, you don't wanna-
a
[00:05:56] Speaker: little, a little tipsy, and I don't wanna get out of bed, am I gonna take my shower water on like a, on a pad?
[00:06:04] Speaker 3: Okay, true, true, true. Okay,
[00:06:05] Speaker: bye. No, I do the vigorous rub. And I say, "In the morning I'll treat you well," and then I go to sleep.
[00:06:12] Speaker 3: Good luck.
[00:06:13] Speaker: Good luck.
[00:06:13] Speaker 2: All right. On that note, let's go on to our next tip.
So you should definitely keep your hands off of your face. So, you know, college and high school is a time of a lot of stress. You're not eating well. You're not sleeping great probably. And, you know, we're prone to breakouts, and if you can keep your hands off of those pimples, don't pop 'em, um, it'll do you a lot of good.
Um, and in addition, you're transferring, you know, impurities, oils, um, a whole lot of bacteria from your hands to your face, so just don't do it.
[00:06:45] Speaker: I think it's hard for a lot of kids in school because, like, sitting at the desk- Yeah ... they're-
[00:06:49] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
[00:06:50] Speaker: Oh, yeah ... you know, constantly like that, and they don't even realize that they're- Yeah
they're doing it. I'm just doing this. Your
[00:06:54] Speaker 3: hands are so much dirtier than your feet-
[00:06:56] Speaker: Mm-hmm ...
[00:06:56] Speaker 3: usually.
[00:06:57] Speaker: I believe it. Mm.
[00:06:58] Speaker 3: I think. Oh, well. 'Cause your
[00:07:00] Speaker: feet... Let's fact-check
[00:07:02] Speaker 3: that. Right? 'Cause you're, like, touching things all day long, and your feet are usually in socks. It makes
[00:07:07] Speaker: sense. Yeah.
[00:07:08] Speaker 3: I mean, it sounds weird.
[00:07:10] Speaker 2: No.
[00:07:10] Speaker: A dog's mouth is cleaner. We should
[00:07:11] Speaker 2: do... We- we'll do research, and we will get back to you.
[00:07:14] Speaker: Yeah, don't- don't quote that. Um, I think another important tip is, like, a lot of, especially, like, high school students and col- you know, a l- there's a lot of athletes out there. Mm-hmm. And, um, I think making sure to shower, like, as soon as you're done exercising or, like, um, playing sports is a really important one, 'cause I, I feel like we see a lot of, um, young adults in our practice, and- Mm-hmm
yeah, a lot of them are athletes. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Um, a lot of them have acne or folliculitis. Mm-hmm. And, you know, what happens is maybe they hang out with their friends a little bit after or, you know, that sweat is just staying on the skin, and I think that's when you can get so many of those, um, skin problems from.
[00:07:53] Speaker 3: Yeah, but I think on the flip, like, so you're saying showering right after. Mm-hmm. But I think on the flip side, you also don't want to, like, over-cleanse-
[00:08:01] Speaker: Yeah ...
[00:08:02] Speaker 3: and/or, like, scrub too much because you've been- Mm-hmm ... sweating.
[00:08:04] Speaker: Yeah.
[00:08:05] Speaker 3: Yeah. So, there's, like, a fine medium.
[00:08:07] Speaker: There's a hot debate online that's been going on for, like, 20 years, I feel like, um, that's like, you know, you have your people that are like, "You need a towel," like, you know, in the shower.
The
[00:08:18] Speaker 2: washcloth?
[00:08:19] Speaker: The washcloth debate. Oh.
[00:08:20] Speaker 2: It's, it's a big debate.
[00:08:21] Speaker: It's a big debate. Yeah. Are you team
[00:08:24] Speaker 2: washcloth? What are your thoughts?
[00:08:25] Speaker: I'm not team washcloth. I mean- Really?
[00:08:27] Speaker 3: I'm not either.
[00:08:27] Speaker: Yeah, and don't get me wrong. Like, once a week or so- I, yeah ... I will do, like, a s- Yeah ... I like an exfoliating scrub- Yeah
mostly 'cause I like the smell. I have a coffee one that I use.
[00:08:35] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:08:35] Speaker: But yeah, I'm not really team, team washcloth.
[00:08:38] Speaker 2: Yeah. I kind of get grossed out by it, like-
[00:08:39] Speaker: Yeah ...
[00:08:39] Speaker 2: a moist cloth-
[00:08:40] Speaker 3: Yeah ...
[00:08:41] Speaker: on your s- I
[00:08:41] Speaker 3: would use it and then wash it ...
[00:08:42] Speaker: you know? You would, you would ha- Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, change it out daily.
[00:08:44] Speaker 3: Just once, yeah.
[00:08:45] Speaker: Mm-hmm.
[00:08:46] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:08:46] Speaker: And a
[00:08:47] Speaker 3: loofah. Yeah. No, thank you. Yeah.
[00:08:48] Speaker 2: Gross.
[00:08:49] Speaker 3: I used to use a loofah, like, all throughout middle school, high school. Really? Yeah. '
[00:08:53] Speaker: Cause you were kind of, like, taught-
[00:08:54] Speaker 3: Yeah ... to use it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that's all I knew.
[00:08:56] Speaker 2: Did you guys ever use the Clarisonic brushes?
[00:08:58] Speaker 3: Yeah. I used a off-brand one.
[00:09:01] Speaker: I used to work with an aesthetician, um, who that was, she used it during her facials, and she swore by that thing
the
[00:09:06] Speaker 3: Foreo. Is that what it's called? There's a- Maybe ... so it was, like, kind of like a, it vibrates- A knockoff. Mm-hmm ... yeah. Yeah, a knockoff. Yeah.
[00:09:12] Speaker 2: Um- I
[00:09:13] Speaker: didn't love it.
[00:09:13] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[00:09:14] Speaker 3: No, it doesn't really do much. And to cl-
[00:09:15] Speaker 2: Oh, the cleaning that thing is disgusting ... clean that thing is pretty,
[00:09:18] Speaker 3: yeah. Which most people are not
[00:09:18] Speaker: cleaning.
No.
[00:09:19] Speaker 2: Ew, the fungus that will, like, grow on that.
[00:09:21] Speaker: Yeah.
[00:09:21] Speaker 2: Nasty.
[00:09:22] Speaker 3: Ew.
[00:09:22] Speaker: I know. Yeah. Yeah. That's why I, like... Yeah, I, I didn't use those during my facials.
[00:09:28] Speaker 3: Yeah. Your hands are plenty.
[00:09:29] Speaker: Yeah.
[00:09:30] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:09:30] Speaker 2: Yeah. All right, Heather, you have another- So plenty.
[00:09:32] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:09:33] Speaker 2: Heather, you have another tip?
[00:09:34] Speaker 3: Yeah, don't touch your face.
Clean the stuff that touches your face too.
[00:09:41] Speaker: Yeah, yes. I'm like... Like, yeah, we just went over that. But reiterate it, yes. Yes. Yes.
[00:09:51] Speaker 3: So like your phones, your headphones.
Mm-hmm. I think a lot of people don't think about, like, the overhead- Mm-hmm ... headphones. They're right on your face. They're filthy. Yeah. I
[00:10:00] Speaker: clean those every day- Yeah ... after the gym, because you can, you can feel the sweat. Yeah. Like, it's disgusting. Yeah. Like, if you're exercising- Yeah ... you
[00:10:07] Speaker 3: know? Yeah. Helmets,
[00:10:09] Speaker: um- Just take, like, a disinfectant wipe and, you know.
[00:10:11] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:10:11] Speaker 2: Yeah, totally agree with that.
[00:10:12] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:10:13] Speaker 2: Um, my next tip is sunscreen. You still gotta use it. Even though, you know, you're in school, and you may be indoors for classes, you're still getting exposed. Um, you're outside maybe for PE, um, walking across campus, so definitely wear your sunscreen.
[00:10:29] Speaker 3: Courtney, what's your next?
[00:10:32] Speaker: Don't forget about your body. A lot of kids are very focused on their face, and then you start seeing conditions like eczema even, um, or, yeah, folliculitis. And I think, um, just paying more attention to conditions that are going on. T- tinea versicolor is a huge one- Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm
um, during the summer on the, on the back and chest. Mm-hmm. So yeah, I think just, um, paying attention to, you know, spots that are changing, new rashes, things like that. I think it's easy to get swept up in, um, the, the mess that school is, and you can forget about those things.
[00:11:06] Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
[00:11:07] Speaker: And then it gets so bad, like sometimes you'll see those eczema patients, it's, like, gotten so bad they're like- Mm-hmm
clawing at their skin, and-
[00:11:12] Speaker 3: Yeah ...
[00:11:13] Speaker: start running into, like, infection risk, and yeah. Yeah. Treat it, treat it while you can.
[00:11:18] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:11:19] Speaker: So.
[00:11:19] Speaker 3: Yeah. I think something to keep in mind, too, maybe this, this might be a different type of tip, but, like, stress can influence the skin, so finding ways to minimize stress, I guess, would be the tip.
Um, y- you're starting class up again. You've got exams coming up, and the social pressure of- Mm-hmm ... hanging out with friends, and doing this and doing that. Um, sports. Maybe you're in high school, and you're applying to college. You're just trying to juggle it all, and sometimes it's not I- it's very hard to do it all, and so don't let your stress get to you because it can affect your skin too.
[00:11:56] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. And find good ways to manage stress. So we can't, you know, get all the stress out of our lives, but, you know, finding time to exercise, yoga, mindfulness, um-
[00:12:08] Speaker 3: Hydration ...
[00:12:08] Speaker 2: hydration, yeah. I mean, there's a lot of things that you can do that can help lower stress and just overall improve your performance, whether it being in school- Mm-hmm
or sports.
[00:12:18] Speaker 3: Be like Courtney, where she takes, um, her time getting ready in the morning- ... versus like me, where I'm, like, bouncing around. Because she's probably less stressed in the morning.
[00:12:28] Speaker: I am. I am. Yeah. I, I tender to my cats. I feed the cats. I- Mm ... do my hair, do my skincare- ... brush my teeth. I- I do. Yeah, I'm, like, lounging around for usually like 10 minutes before I leave, and then- Yeah, so.
[00:12:43] Speaker 3: That's like my husband too. Yeah, and I'm like, like racing out the door.
[00:12:49] Speaker 2: Yeah. Same.
[00:12:51] Speaker: Just wake up a little earlier.
[00:12:53] Speaker 2: Ugh. I do wake up early. Yeah. I go to the gym at, like, 5:00. How
[00:12:55] Speaker 3: much earlier
[00:12:56] Speaker: do you wake up? I don't know. What time are you guys waking up at?
[00:12:57] Speaker 2: 5:00.
[00:13:00] Speaker: I wake up at, like, 6:20 and I still-
[00:13:02] Speaker 2: Well, I, I, I work out in the morning.
[00:13:05] Speaker: Yeah, I
[00:13:05] Speaker 2: work out at night. And then, you know, I have to shower, get ready- Yes ... and then I have to get the kids ready- Sometimes I wake up at 4:30 ... and then make them down for breakfast.
[00:13:11] Speaker: You what?
[00:13:12] Speaker 3: Sometimes I wake up at 4:30.
[00:13:14] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
[00:13:14] Speaker: This is, like, crazy talk.
[00:13:16] Speaker 3: I would rather work out in the mornings.
[00:13:18] Speaker 2: Yeah. I need to get that out of the way because I have no other time, like zero, like jam-packed the entire
[00:13:24] Speaker 3: day.
Yeah. Mm-hmm. But I'm the same like you. Like, if I go home- Mm ... I'm not gonna work out. Yeah. Not at all. Unless I do it as soon as I get home. That's me. Or another thing is, like, going to the gym before even going home.
[00:13:34] Speaker: But I also don't shower in the morning, I shower after work. Because if I'm already gonna exercise- Mm
like, you know, you're, that's another time. Yeah. Mm-hmm. So yeah, my mornings are pretty easy because I've already done most of my stuff at night, and then- Mm. You know.
[00:13:47] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[00:13:49] Speaker: I don't know.
[00:13:49] Speaker 3: Be like me.
[00:13:52] Speaker 2: All right. Let's do a little quick fire back to school edition. So let's go through some rules. So rule number one, don't pick your pimples.
[00:14:02] Speaker: Mm-hmm.
[00:14:02] Speaker 2: And then we'll just kind of go down the line. You're next.
[00:14:04] Speaker: I feel like this is on purpose to make me read rule number two. Wash your face before bed. And you know what? If that washing of your face is at 6:30 when you come home and you take your shower, that's fine. God forbid the one day a quarter that I go out with my friends and wear a little tinted moisturizer and fall asleep, that one night, I'll remember it every time now.
And I will wake myself up out of my slumber, but.
[00:14:31] Speaker 3: So do you do your nighttime skincare routine before you go out and then you just put tinted moisturizer on top? I
[00:14:38] Speaker 2: think- I don't ... I think she's skipping that day.
[00:14:40] Speaker: I put a moisturizer on before I go out. I, and then usually either I'll do a little pow- depending on the months, during the humid months I'll do a little bit more powder, and then during the winter I'll use, like, a tinted moisturizer.
[00:14:52] Speaker 3: Mm.
[00:14:52] Speaker: But, but yeah. And then, I don't know. So it's, like, not... Like I said, I'm not stack... I'm not, like, over here putting, like, primer foundation- Yeah ... contour, blush-
[00:15:03] Speaker 3: Setting spray ...
[00:15:04] Speaker: s- concealer, setting spray. Like, this is not my makeup routine. My makeup routine is literally tinted moisturizer and mascara. Yeah.
Like, maybe- Yeah ... a winged line.
[00:15:12] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:15:12] Speaker: Maybe. Yeah. Oh, my God. So.
[00:15:14] Speaker 2: Makeup is so complex.
[00:15:15] Speaker: That's what I'm saying. Yeah. Like, there's layers to it- Yeah ... and I'm not layering. I'm doing the bare minimum.
[00:15:19] Speaker 3: Okay. So.
[00:15:20] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[00:15:20] Speaker: Yeah. If I'm doing, like, a- Yeah, it's minimal makeup ... tape full of, like, if I had, like, a wedding or something I was going to or being in that I, like, was getting my makeup done, in that case, yes, I probably couldn't fall asleep with that.
[00:15:30] Speaker 2: Mm.
[00:15:30] Speaker: I don't like feeling all that. Yeah. Yeah. You know? But these days I'm not really doing that.
[00:15:34] Speaker 3: Yeah. I gotcha. Okay. Rule number three, don't introduce five or 12 new products at once. Mm-hmm.
[00:15:41] Speaker 2: Rule number four, shower or cleanse after heavy sweating, exercise.
[00:15:46] Speaker: When possible.
