INTRO GOOD (DAY) EVENING MADISON! YOU’RE LISTENING TO THE 5/6 O’CLOCK NEWS UPDATE ON WSUM 91.7 FM MADISON STUDENT RADIO. I’M TALULA HAYES.

IN THE NEWS TODAY,

IN STATE NEWS,
Beloit man rear-ends Amish Buggy, continuing recent trend of accidents between cars and buggies in Wisconsin. The driver of the buggy was considered injured but not life threatening. The crash occurred on State Highway 81 in Lafayette County. Only in this year, a man and his horse were killed after being hit by a pickup in the same county, a 13 year old died in a similar crash in Sauk County, and a woman in Monroe county died after being hit by an SUV. Last week, a crash in Marquette County injured four children and the driver is currently facing hit and run charges. Most of these crashes are distinguishable because they happen in broad daylight on visible stretches of the road. Over 75% of the crashes are the fault of the driver failing to slow down and running into the back of a buggy.

ALSO IN STATE NEWS,
There have been 164 measles cases in Wisconsin this year. Except for one individual, all cases occurred in unvaccinated people. Dr. Ryan Westergaard, Chief Medical Officer for Communicable Diseases at DHS believes rising measles cases can be attributed to low vaccination rates. Vernon County has the lowest measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination rates among children and adolescents in Wisconsin. The rates are 38 percentage points below the state average. Dr. Westergaard encourages safe practices such as getting up to date on vaccinations and isolating if exposed. Public health departments are providing active outreach to majorly affected counties. The goal is to minimize risk exposure and provide proper resources to lower the number of measles cases.

IN NATIONAL NEWS,
CNN, MS NOW and Politico are suing President Trump’s administration over their ban from the White House on Monday. Reporters from all three news outlets were barred from entering the White House and have called this ban illegal, claiming it “a blatant violation” of the First Amendment. The government is constitutionally forbidden from restricting the press, with the news outlets claiming they cannot quote “deprive the press of their First Amendment rights and liberty and property interests with no notice or process based solely on his dislike of their reporting,” end quote. At the entrance, the reporters’ had their badges disabled on Saturday after Trump claimed he barred them for reporting “fake news”. Monday morning, CNN was scheduled to cover the president’s trip to New York for the U.N. General Assembly, however the TV pool wrote there would be no replacement coverage following CNN’s removal. On Truth Social on Monday, Trump posted that he “cherished” the free press.

IN INTERNATIONAL NEWS,
Bessent proposes AI safety notifications in talks with China ahead of a Xi-Trump meeting at a summit this week. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was in conversation with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York on Sunday to discuss an alert mechanism. They are hoping to set up a U.S. and China dialogue regarding national security concerns. The plan is to instate a notification system for common goals and threats with AI-related incidents on the national security level. Bessent said they believe that “moving from opaque to more transparency between the number one and the number two AI powers in the world is very important,” end quote. Xinhua claimed officials had constructive exchanges regarding key economic and trade issues. Xi and Trump are set to meet next Thursday and Friday in Washington to discuss a working relationship.

PASSING IT OVER TO SPORTS, HERE’S WITH AN UPDATE
Packers come back to win sloppy game against Jets. The Packers travelled to Metlife Stadium to take on the Jets on Sunday and it was certainly not what the team had in mind. The team scored 7 points in the first 56 minutes of football, with penalties and bad weather conditions derailing their offense. Down 17 to 7 they scored 10 unanswered points in the last 3 minutes to send the game to overtime. After a defensive stop rookie kicker Trey Smack kicked a 26 yard field goal for the win. The win moves them to 1-1 on the year with their home opener this Thursday night vs the Falcons. Two of the other NFC North teams squared off with the Vikings beating the Bears 9 to 3. Other upsets include the Raiders beating the Chargers, the Saints beating the Ravens and the Browns beating the Buccaneers. Week 2 wraps up tonight with the Giants travelling to LA to take on the Rams.
