Film reviews that are real, introspective and fun!
Hey, everyone. I'm Shakyra Mabone.
Jack:And I'm Jack Williams.
Shakyra:And welcome to Reeling It In, the podcast where we're taking moment to reel in the best and worst film elements while keeping our commentary a % real.
Jack:Today, we're doing something a little different because we're not just talking about movies, we're doing a little bit of trivia. And we have, for that reason, we have two guests today. We have Liz, who is, has been on the show, has not
Liz:been on the
Shakyra:I have
Jack:not been on the show yet.
Liz:Which is awesome. I don't know, surprising, the amount of times you've been on House Slides.
Jack:Exactly. Liz is the host of House Slides, another podcast here at the State News. She's also the editor in chief here.
Liz:Yes. We
Jack:have the big boss on today. And returning we also have Demonte. Hey, everyone. Hey, Demonte. Hey, Demonte.
Jack:For having me. He was on for our Captain America episode.
Shakyra:This was a great film, by the way. You haven't watched it, please go
Jack:watch it. I enjoyed it. But yeah, today we are doing trivia. We're gonna have a great time. I'll be the host.
Jack:I'll be reading the questions The judge. The scorekeeper, if you will.
Shakyra:Judge Jack.
Liz:Exactly. That's right.
Jack:But yeah, so grab your popcorn and let's reel it in.
Liz:Yeah. Love that.
Jack:If you're also watching, you'll notice I'm wearing glasses. These are not real glasses. These are blue light glasses.
Liz:I said, don't know anything.
Shakyra:Hey, those are really nice glasses. You look nice. Are those prescription? Nope.
Jack:And I came to actually find out that blue light glasses do not do anything. They don't reduce eye strain and they don't improve sleep. They're completely placebo, but I'm wearing them because I think they look good and I do look more
Shakyra:game shabbos,
Jack:as Liz noted before we started the episode. Yeah, getting into trivia.
Shakyra:Yeah. So, like, I'm not a really good trivia person. I think you guys kinda got that when we go on trivia nights at the land But, you know, I'll I'll do my best because I love films and Mhmm. Yeah. I feel
Liz:better about this kind because me and my friends at home, my roommates, we do a lot of pop culture Jeopardy.
Shakyra:Yeah.
Liz:So I feel a little bit more well versed to do this sort of trivia. Now if you gave me, like, regular Jeopardy questions, I would not know anything. But, you know, I'm not gonna toot my own horn too bad because it'd be really, really embarrassing if I didn't pull this one out today. So Exactly.
Jack:Yeah. Yeah. Alright. So let's let's get into it. First, I'm using Sporkle for this, just so we're all kind of on the same page.
Jack:So we're going kind be jumping around. I'll be doing kind of different topics. We'll probably go from topic to topic, though. But the first one, so your mind's in the right place, Pixar movies. Going be doing Pixar movies.
Shakyra:I love a good Pixar movie.
Jack:And yeah, so first question, blurt it out when you have the answer and I'll figure outI'll make the decision of who's what. First question: This film series had entries coming out in 1995. Toy Story. Devonte got it.
Liz:And if I lose, I'm also firing everybody at the sex. Woah. Woah.
Shakyra:Woah. Woah. It's okay because our time is limited in a way, so, you know.
Jack:That is actually an important speaking of limited time, we are this actually gonna move away from Pixar because of way this is laid out. I don't like it. So we're just kinda we're gonna be everywhere.
Liz:We're also, like, not disabled.
Jack:Next question. What was the first feature length animated movie ever released?
Shakyra:First feature.
Jack:Snow White. That's Devante's Got
Shakyra:It Again. What? Wow. So Goodness.
Jack:Devante with two.
Shakyra:That's so Yes.
Jack:It is Snow White.
Liz:Awesome.
Jack:Which just had
Demonte:an animation back then for its Yeah. Was gonna say that didn't that come in the thirties.
Shakyra:Yeah. '39?
Demonte:'30 '9.
Shakyra:Okay. I said '36. I was close, but
Demonte:'39? Of course, almost reboot
Shakyra:very much.
Jack:'37.
Demonte:'30 '7? Oh, wow. Did you
Shakyra:watch it? I heard it was, like, not good. So
Jack:The the new one?
Shakyra:Yeah. Like, the live action.
Jack:It did get a lot of Yeah. Lack. I didn't
Liz:see Rachel Ziegler. I did not see it. Yeah. But I know that people are already mean, everyone makes fun of Gal Gadot's, like, delivery of things, but this is this is, like, no, like, no different, I guess. Apparently, she's just as bad in this one.
Liz:Aw, man. Gallo. That's Gallo, no one. Gallo.
Jack:Sorry.
Liz:Yeah. Fuckin'. That's fuckin'.
Jack:Alright. Gonna hold on. Maybe don't.
Shakyra:Wait. So have you seen it or no? No?
Demonte:No. No. Okay. I've heard Dane Spotted is it's an all not good.
Shakyra:The only reason why my fiancee I don't know. Probably, like, when I'm with my little sister or something
Liz:or Mhmm. Mhmm.
Jack:Yeah. Alright. Next question. This is question number three. We're gonna be I'm gonna say quote from a movie.
Jack:Just tell me what movie it's from. I am serious and don't call me Shirley.
Shakyra:I am serious and don't call me Shirley.
Jack:Anyone. Shirley.
Liz:It's a pretty famous Yeah.
Shakyra:It sounds so familiar. I'm trying to think.
Liz:Is it, like, one of those, like, classic comedies? It is one of
Jack:those classic comedies. Yep.
Shakyra:The way I was about to say.
Demonte:So do we?
Liz:I was about
Shakyra:to say Harry Potter, but I'm like, no. No. Don't call me what was
Jack:what was your serious and don't call me Shirley. That's from Airplane.
Liz:Oh. We should know that. Yeah.
Jack:Classic spooky Classic. We'll do another one, though.
Shakyra:Harry Potter is
Liz:crazy. Like Woah con lines.
Jack:Here we go. We've actually talked about this next one, another quote. We'll go with another quote here. We talked about this one on the show. So, Kyra, you should be able to get this.
Shakyra:Yeah. I should.
Jack:Get your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape.
Demonte:Why is it ape?
Jack:Dante's got it.
Demonte:Why is it ape?
Jack:I mean, They're both right. They are both right. It was in the original. It was also in I mean, it's it's like a repeated line.
Shakyra:Yeah. So I feel like I should get that.
Jack:I will give it
Liz:to you.
Demonte:Make sure darn dirty hands off me, you darn dirty ape.
Jack:Get your hands get your dirty paws off me, you damn dirty ape.
Demonte:Yeah. Wait. Can you say damn?
Liz:Doesn't Draco Malfoy say that in the
Shakyra:does he?
Liz:Think. He? The planet of the Earth's history?
Shakyra:Oh, yeah.
Demonte:The twenty eleven one?
Liz:Yeah. Yeah. I'm pretty sure he's the one who says that.
Shakyra:I was like, wait a minute.
Liz:Was talking about Harry
Demonte:I'm like, did you see
Liz:that his autobiography about his time in Harry Potter? No.
Demonte:Oh my gosh.
Shakyra:Oh. Oh my gosh.
Jack:Yeah. Next up. Okay.
Shakyra:I'm sorry. We gotta give I'm sorry. Can we just like take a, you know, a ride back to memory lane? I really do like the 02/2001 version of Planning of Apes. What was it?
Jack:Yeah. We talked about that. That was a
Shakyra:great Everybody did not like it, but I I I love it. It was funny. Have you guys seen it?
Jack:I had a great time watching it.
Liz:That's not the one with James Franco,
Demonte:is it?
Jack:No. Okay. That is 2013. The 02/2011 was the one with Mark Wahlberg Yeah. And Paul Giamatti.
Liz:What's that name?
Jack:Tim Burton directed it.
Shakyra:Yeah. And
Jack:It's very Tim Burton.
Shakyra:The lady from Harry Potter what's her name? Helen? Helen?
Liz:And, Carter?
Jack:Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Anyway.
Jack:Treveo. That was a great that was a great callback. It was a great episode. I should have played for that. Anyway, next question.
Jack:Four, I believe. In what 1976 thriller does Robert De Niro famously say? You talking to me? You talking to me? You talking to me?
Liz:Oh, the thriller? Yep.
Jack:Thriller. It is a thriller movie.
Shakyra:And it's not Goodfella's
Demonte:The Godfather.
Shakyra:The Godfather. No. You talking to me. I'll give you
Jack:a hint. He's, he's talking to himself in the mirror when he says this.
Liz:In 1976? You I know. I
Demonte:how do I not notice? Another
Jack:I'll throw you another bone. Yeah. Martin Scorsese.
Liz:Yes. Taxi driver. Yep. Oh. Nice.
Jack:That is
Shakyra:Nice. Nice.
Demonte:Going a point for a
Liz:little Italian movie. Like, one people
Demonte:make him like Well,
Liz:Robert Nirosan. Yeah.
Shakyra:I was gonna say Scarface, but I'm like, no, that's not him. That's
Liz:Al Al Pacino. So
Jack:we check the scoreboards. We have two points for Demonte, one for Kyra and one for Liz.
Shakyra:I just like how Demonte is in the lead already.
Jack:Demonte's got it.
Demonte:He's so
Shakyra:crazy. Toy Story. Toy Story. Oh my gosh.
Jack:We're gonna have to I it just logged me out of my Google Docs.
Liz:Hold on. I can do it on a notes app if you'd like.

Liz:Yeah? Can I get a hint?
Jack:Liam Neeson.
Liz:Liam Neeson. Liam Neeson. Neeson. Come on, guys.
Shakyra:God's making.
Jack:It's gonna be awful when I tell you that it is actually Schindler's List.
Liz:Oh, yeah. A freaking four game movie, really.
Jack:Yeah. A real four game movie. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
Shakyra:How could anybody
Demonte:do it?
Jack:So that'll go to nobody, unfortunately.
Shakyra:Maybe we should go watch that again? Maybe? Yeah. I feel so crazy. I'm in first
Liz:in the Schindler's List. I know. I know.
Demonte:I gotta admit. Yeah. Yeah. I gotta admit. I I I I've I've saw clips, you know, but not that
Shakyra:kind of gloomy movie. Yeah. YouTube shorts. Yeah.
Demonte:You know, like
Liz:YouTube shorts
Shakyra:and Clips one. Clips two. Yeah. Perhaps. Yeah.
Demonte:And it's just like
Liz:Half and half on one two three movies.
Demonte:Yeah. Like, yeah.
Liz:Half and half.
Demonte:Yeah. How
Shakyra:do you feel about pirating movies?
Liz:For one.
Demonte:How do
Jack:I feel about pirating movies?
Liz:Yeah. Oh, that's a great question.
Jack:Oh, I don't know if I should say pirate movies. On the pirate Yeah.
Liz:You know, piracy is not a victimless crime.
Jack:It is not a victimless crime. Your DVDs will let you know.
Shakyra:Oh my god. Do you remember, like, the little p PSA, like, before? Yeah. Oh my god. Those are steal a car.
Jack:You wouldn't steal a car. Why would you steal a movie?
Shakyra:Oh my god. That is just scary so bad.
Jack:Because it's easier, and I can just go online and do it.
Liz:And expensive.
Demonte:Also for
Liz:I guess so is car. Yeah?
Demonte:But also for legal reasons, we here at the state news, we don't support
Jack:pirate movies. Pirate. No.
Shakyra:Don't do that. Seriously.
Demonte:That's a no no. Anyway.
Jack:Let's get on to our next question. Oh, this is a good one. This is a Marvel movie. Cool. What song plays over the opening credits of Guardians of the Galaxy?
Jack:Come
Jack:and
Jack:Get
Jack:Your
Shakyra:Oh, god. Gotta say that. That's copyright. Wait. No. That's not there. You gotta say the title of the song.

Liz:Yeah. I don't
Demonte:know.
Liz:I just don't love fantasy.
Shakyra:Got Really?
Liz:All that much. Like, I'll do Harry Potter for nostalgia purposes.
Shakyra:Right, right.
Jack:Really good fantasy movie that came out in recent years that a lot of people didn't pay attention to was the Dungeons and Dragons movie. Yeah. Astonishing. Chris Pine was amazing. I liked them.
Jack:Gosh. It was amazing in that film.
Liz:He's another creep. Yeah. Chris Pine, who?
Jack:High fantasy films are amazing. Star Trek. I love them.
Demonte:Chris Pine.
Jack:That's more sci fi. Yeah. Anyway, next question. Let's get on with it. What is thewe're still on comic book movies, we'll stay here for a minute.

Liz:Let me find it. I never
Jack:got around to seeing Joker.
Liz:Just because I don't know everyone say it's so bad. Yeah. I love Joker, so I can't watch her be bad.
Shakyra:Yeah.
Liz:Because Star is born, though. Great.
Shakyra:Right. Yeah. I wrote a whole paper about Joker, actually.
Demonte:Let me
Shakyra:go find it really quick.
Liz:I never finished House of Gucci.
Jack:While Kyra's pulling that up, we'll move on to our
Shakyra:next question. I can't find it. We can okay.
Liz:Go ahead.
Jack:We'll we'll still move on to our next question.
Liz:Old axe just says Joker and then the Spelled wrong.

Liz:Oh, okay. Don't know if
Jack:you called that a crime movie. Oh, is. I mean, it could
Liz:be a crime.
Demonte:It's still criminal.
Shakyra:To be honest, when I flashed that for the first time, I was like, I don't see the hype
Liz:of it, little king. Like,
Shakyra:don't get me wrong. What's that guy named? Nick Fury. I should know this. Samuel L.
Shakyra:Jackson? Like, he was cooling it, you know. The Mia lady was cool, you know. Yeah. But

Demonte:That's crazy.
Jack:Yeah, I did not realize that. And she popped up on the cast thing and I was like, what? Anyway, next question. If we want to score check, Liz and Kyra are tied at two points and Demate's the lead at three. So let's see.
Demonte:Those are
Liz:the Family Feud Feudal films.

Liz:I just love Andrew Garfield. Yeah. And I just love that movie. Also, I am currently reading this is really
Jack:cringe or whatever.

Liz:It was not that name. Just came out.
Jack:Also, did fully say the 2,000.
Liz:Yes, yeah. That's fine.
Jack:But that'll bring up Demonte to be tied with Liz at four points. Kyra is still trailing behind
Shakyra:It's a lot too, it's fine.
Jack:With two points.
Shakyra:Not too much.
Jack:We will get there, though.

Liz:I think it's Norman Bates.
Jack:No. What? It's not. You're very close, though. Bates.
Jack:It's Norman Bates.
Shakyra:Norman Bates.
Jack:So I'm not gonna give
Demonte:you that point because
Jack:it was a bonus point.
Liz:That's fine.
Jack:And you already had me.
Shakyra:What made you say that?
Liz:Did you wait, what did you say? Can you repeat what you said?
Demonte:The Slinging Slasher from SpongeBob.
Jack:That's a great episode. That's right. Actually
Liz:Do you guys, like, remember, like, specific episodes of SpongeBob? Because I feel like I don't
Shakyra:Yes and no. It's kinda blurred, to be honest. Yeah. I do. That's a good question, actually.
Liz:Because I feel like I was, like, way too young, like, I just don't remember certain episodes except for that one because it freaked me out Mhmm. Where he's at night and, like, he keeps hearing this the noise.
Demonte:Oh, yeah.
Liz:You know what I'm saying? Like, or whatever? Oh, doodle bop.
Shakyra:I remember that.
Jack:Doodle bop.
Shakyra:Well, not that she wasn't talking about that specific episode, but yeah.
Demonte:Yeah. Yeah. Mhmm. I think since I was a child briefly, used to, like, stay up at night watching. Back in my day, it's called Nicktoons Snackwork.
Liz:Nicktoons? Stop.

Demonte:Oh. I recently learned this, too.
Jack:It's a veryit's kind of a trick question. Not really. It's just it's a lot simpler than you think it is.
Shakyra:Why would feel like
Demonte:Does Graham play rodents help?
Shakyra:Is he an actor?
Jack:He is.
Liz:Sylvester Sloan?
Jack:It is Sylvester Sloan. Infamously Robert Not infamously. Robert Famously played Rocky, wrote Rocky, and also directed Rocky.

Jack:Kyra.
Liz:Went to film school, guys. She's lying. Liz, fine. No. That's actually so true.

Demonte:Oh, that's right.
Shakyra:It's not Robert De Niro? Okay.
Demonte:It's Robert De Niro. Once again, that is not
Jack:the answer I'm looking for.
Liz:Oh my god.
Jack:I know Liz is gonna be mad when I say it, it seems like it's on the tip of her tongue. I can't. I was looking for Robert Zemeckis.
Demonte:Oh, okay. Yeah. Well, I was halfway
Jack:in the movie. A fan of Forrest Gumps.
Liz:Of course. Rob. Right. Rob. I knew it was Robert
Demonte:I knew it was Robert something. I almost said Robert Pattison.
Liz:Stop. And we watched Twilight again the other night. Oh my gosh.
Shakyra:Okay. So wait. What are your takes on Twilight rewatching it as, like, an adult?
Demonte:I love Twilight.
Liz:I love Twilight. Really?
Jack:I watched Twilight. She actually, Liz made me watch it. Yeah. But Oh.
Shakyra:That was your first time watching it? Mhmm. Really?
Jack:Although, actually, I watched bits of it when I was younger because my mom was really into it, but we were really interested in the cool scenes where they would fight. Yeah. So I would just see those clips. You watched I fully watched those. And I was a fan.
Jack:I liked Twilight. I thought it was cool. I thought it was fun.
Liz:I watched Twilight like a like a film, kinda like a wine connoisseur
Jack:kind of.
Liz:I'm just, picking up different books. And I it's so funny. I feel like every single time I watch it, I can I'll say the same thing about the same scenes, and I'll just find one other little thing.
Shakyra:Yeah. That's Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's a classic.
Shakyra:Classic.
Jack:Classic. It is classic. I love it. Speaking of classics, next question.
Shakyra:It's a baby. Who
Jack:played detective Rick Deckard in Blade Runner? Yeah. The main actor
Liz:The original
Jack:Blade Runner, who is the main He was also in the newer one. He is significantly older, though, because people nice.
Shakyra:No. That's not.
Jack:One of youI'll give you a hint. One of you used him as an answer earlier, but it was wrong. But it's right now.
Liz:Robert? George. George? George. George.
Jack:Is it just George? Yeah.
Liz:It's it. No. Oh, is it Harrison No.
Jack:It is Harrison Ford. Okay.
Liz:I was gonna say George Harrison
Demonte:I am told a
Jack:lot So George Harrison
Liz:is not the answer.
Jack:He's not an actor, except unless you consider the Beatles movies. Yeah?
Shakyra:I do. Of Help.
Jack:He was an actor in Help. Also, in my opinion
Liz:Not much of an actor.
Jack:I know this isn't a music podcast, but I think he did release the best. Out of all the Beatles who went off and did single solo careers, I think he had the best album. Yeah. All Things Must Pass was amazing. My favorite.
Jack:One of my favorites, actually. Anyway, this acclaimed Oscar winning filmmaker directed Happy Feet, Babe, Pig in the City Oh. And Mad Max Fury Road. So a really wide range of films Oh,
Liz:I feel like I know
Jack:who
Liz:directed
Jack:Mad Max.
Demonte:I should notice. Dude, like, just watched
Jack:Babe, Pig in the Image today.
Demonte:We've spoken about Babe, Pig in the City.
Shakyra:Oh, Pig in Not the first one, but the Pig in the City one.
Demonte:Pig the City.
Liz:What? Okay.
Jack:And Happy Feet.
Shakyra:And Happy Feet. I feel like I
Liz:know who directed Mad Max. It's like
Demonte:Two of them are children's movies and the other one is Violet. So
Shakyra:You know, I didn't really like Happy Feet. I'm sorry. You didn't? No.
Demonte:I loved
Liz:Happy Feet.
Demonte:Happy Feet two. I didn't like it.
Jack:He also directed Furiosa and all the other Furiosa? Or mostly, like, Mad Max. Yeah.
Liz:It's not coming to me.
Jack:I can't. The answer I'm looking for is George Miller. Oh. He won a lot of I think Fury Road swept that year in the Oscars. Was a very popular movie that got
Demonte:a lot
Jack:of awards.
Shakyra:Or is
Jack:up for a lot of don't know how many. For Fury Road?
Shakyra:That was like twenty fifteen.
Jack:20 15, yeah. And then Furiosa was last year, which was very good. I was a fan of Furiosa.
Shakyra:Taylor is signaling you.
Jack:Oh, Okay. We'll do one more question, if I can.
Shakyra:Dang, this is so embarrassing.
Jack:Find one.
Shakyra:She whooped
Demonte:us. Man.
Jack:Okay. Here we go. It's too late to conceive. Back to Martin Scorsese. What Martin Scorsese movie holds the record for the most f bombs in one movie?
Demonte:The Big Lebowski.
Jack:The Big Lebowski.
Liz:He did not try Big Lebowski. No. That's crazy. Mean
Jack:I should And this gonna give it away. It's where
Demonte:a lot.
Jack:Think Jordan Belfort.
Liz:Oh. Oh. The Wolf Wall Street.
Demonte:That's it? Right.
Jack:And Liz sweeps with nine points, to Demonte's four points, to Kyra's two points.
Liz:So I could've tooted my own Has
Jack:been our trivia segment.
Liz:Yay. That was so fun, guys.
Jack:Good job, Liz.
Demonte:Thank you
Jack:so much. Kinda a little embarrassing.
Liz:Yeah, what's my what's my prize?
Jack:Oh. Pride in rates. A round of applause. Oh.
Liz:Cheap gift. No. Thank you.
Jack:Congratulations. Actually, what you can get, and you would have gotten this anyway, and what you're both gonna be getting right now is it's just like a little send off because this is the last episode of reeling it in for the semester. We will be back in the fall, August, early September, depending on when we can get things started. But Kyra is I'm leaving. Unfortunately, she's I'm
Shakyra:so sick. No. I'm just kidding.
Liz:I'm ready go.
Shakyra:But no.
Liz:One of us are reeling in him was enough.
Shakyra:No. Yeah. I'm graduating. It's been an honor to be starting from podcasting to being a host of podcasts, two podcasts as that. I started off on All Stays the Chocolate.
Shakyra:I was the host and the founder of that show. We won an award for it. You know? And that was a real treat. I really appreciate that.
Shakyra:It's really been an honor, trying to figure out how can we get this podcast into And it obviously did. And I can't wait to see how you guys would make it better in the future, honestly. And yeah, I'm graduating. Wow.

Demonte:He was
Shakyra:on an episode one.
Jack:It was the one you weren't here. Yeah. We kind of had him in on
Shakyra:Awesome. Like a
Jack:test run.
Shakyra:To backtrack, are you going to that premiere?
Demonte:Oh yeah, with my brother?

Jack:would love talk about it. Maybe in the fall, I'll let Dulik But yeah, I'm excited. It has been a great time hosting this with Shakira, getting this going. You know, we don't do movie reviews here at the State News. We don't do written movie reviews.
Shakyra:First of all, how did we, like, even thought of this podcast?
Jack:I think it was for that reason. We were talking about how we don't really dowe don't do reviews here.
Shakyra:Yeah. And I was just talking about, like, ever since I became podcast coordinator back in 2021, I'm so old, you know, by the way, but I was like, yeah, think it would be cool to have, a film podcast, but it just never got off the Yeah.
Jack:I'm glad we were kinda finally able to do it. I remember, I was in I was in a study abroad in France over the summer and I was just talking with one of my friends and I was like, I just really wish we could do something like this because we don't do the reviews. And I was like, I either want to do the reviews or I want to do a podcast. And once we got this started, she had texted me like, oh, you got it started. I was happy to finally get this going.
Jack:I can't wait for the future. I can't wait to welcome Anishan. But it's been a great time.
Shakyra:I'm going to forever watch
Jack:Forever tuning in.
Liz:Other than lights. They're railing it in.
Jack:Yeah, and turning to house lights.
Shakyra:Oh, all stages of chocolate, of course.
Liz:Well, yes, of course.
Jack:But yeah, so it's been an honor, Thank you for being my co host.

Demonte:slide is
Jack:raising his hand.
Demonte:We have one more senior and that is our state news podcast coordinator, Taylor.
Jack:Yes. Taylor, you're a senior?
Shakyra:Taylor will also be leaving. Look how far the podcast never came. You know, I built this brick by brick. I promise you I did.
Jack:Everyone say thank you to Cairo
Liz:for that. Yeah, but I want to say thank you. But
Jack:yeah, on that note, I guess also Taylor, you so much for
Liz:doing all this You

Jack:been begging
Liz:for you
