I'm Frank. Bravo, and welcome to your Tech Makeover, the podcast that gives you tips and tricks to help simplify and get more out of the technology in your life. Today I have an exciting and very useful topic to tell you about location sharing on your smartphone. There are several ways to do this, including Google Maps and the Apple Find My feature.

Whether you want to keep tabs on your loved ones or coordinate meetups with friends. These tools are game changers. So you know I'm recording this in November 2024. The instructions I'm giving in this podcast and the set of features are valid as of this recording, but they could change over time. All in all, they've been pretty consistent. But if they do change, I'm sure you can use the concepts in this episode to apply them to what you're seeing on your own device today.

First things first, let's talk about setting up location sharing on Google Maps. It's actually pretty easy. First, you have to download the Google Maps app onto your phone from the phones app store. Open the app and tap the menu icon from there. Select Location Sharing and follow the on screen instructions to enable it. You'll have the option to share your information as real time location from a specific period or indefinitely.

But what if your friends and families don't have Google Maps? Google maps makes it very easy to invite other people to share their location. Simply tap on the Add People button in the location sharing settings. Choose how you want to send them their invite, either through messaging or email or generating a link. And once they've accepted, you'll be able to see each other's locations and whereabouts on the map.

The great thing about Google Maps is that it works on both Android and Apple devices. If your friends and families are in a mixed bunch where they have both of these kinds of devices when it comes to using the phones they use, this is the best solution. If all of your people that you want to share your location with are eye users and are in the Apple ecosystem, then using the Apple Find My features probably the one for you to start.

Use the location sharing Find my app on your phone. This is either on your iPhone or in your iPad. This app should be installed by default on your devices. Tap on the people tab at the bottom. Select the little plus icon and then the Share My Location option. From there, you'll enter the contacts name or email and send the invitation.

You can choose to share your location indefinitely, or if the amount of time, once they've accepted their location, will be visible to you, and if they allow it, vice versa. Whether you're using Google Maps or Apple's Find Me, these location sharing features come in handy in various situations. Imagine coordinating a night out with friends, ensuring everybody arrives safely during a road trip, or simply keeping eyes on your kids whereabouts when they're out and about.

The possibilities are endless. There are also other third party applications that do these same sorts of things that allow you to see on the map where your loved ones are when this location has been shared. Have you used location sharing and how has it worked for you? Let me know. And as always, if you find that you have ideas for topics that you'd like me to cover, please feel free to contact me via email at Frank at your Tech makeover.com.
