I.
It is 20 hours past midnight as the summer has really started to settle in, and we hope enjoyed the sunshine along with everybody else today. It is indeed Thursday and that can only mean it’s time to break out the funk the punk the soul the rock with our Sampled & AMPED weekly, with this 24 hour period entered into our spotted minds as May 26, 2022. This is Danno, of course, and while we might pay tribute to sun goddess nightly every time the show opens, we are definitely worshipping her for the first hour tonight with some old school cuts and of course new joints just out from the likes of Biggy, Danny Krivit, El Michels, and Nile Rodgers just to name a few who’ll add some summer vibery to the first hour mix. Of course, Dan Lloyd once again joins us to run down what’s come out and what’s up next in the rock world for the finality of the show’s 2nd hour, as we have headbutts in the suite at this year’s final league game for Man City along with lots of rock LP’s out tomorrow to cover and hover around before we hit 10 bells. However, as mentioned before tonight is all about the sun goddess and her servant Ramsey Lewis as we go back to Chicago in 1998 to begin things tonight, and we’ll pontificate further after we just let the opener ride. THIS is The Drop.
Ramsey Lewis feat Earth Wind & Fire – Sun Goddess
The Drop has begun the worship of the expired sun on this half of the globe after a glorious summery day here in Gwangju. Danno here, keeping it sunny from studio 2, GFN HQ on our funk punk soul rock Thursday night, and Dan Lloyd will join us in part 3 to take this thing home for our AMPED feature.
As to how we just started, that was the entirety of Ramsey Lewis along with Earth Wind & Fire with their 1974 joint of joints that we open every night with, and that was Sun Goddess for our TIGHT (or) feature to begin things today.
Naturally, we open with that song as our program signal every single night to start the show, but after the glory of today I just had to let it ride in full. For those keeping score that is the title track to Ramsey Lewis’ 1974 LP, a hit record that went to #1 on the top soul albums chart in the US and #12 overall on the Hot 100.
Now, the sun & fun of today here in Jeolla-do is not the only reason we played that to start, as it was yesterday in 1998 that The City of Chicago officially declared it Ramsey Lewis Week in the Windy City to honor the grammy-winning jazz composer.
Born in 1935 in Chicago, Lewis has been through and seen it all with a career that started with Chess Records way back in 1956. Still active today, the 86 year old is a literal living treasure, and we can only wish there will be many more years to come for one of our very favorites here on The Drop.

So we started old school tonight, but we got some new tunes and remixes featuring a couple more legends of the game here before we close part 1 tonight. Up next we have The Suffers to be followed by Los Coming Soon (and no, that’s not a typo or misspoken), and we’ll finish with a new cut featuring Nile Rodgers. Naturally we’ll discuss everything as deep as we can but still keep it succinct, but for now it’s music time. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday night.
______
Back at it with the final verbosities here in part 1 tonight on our Sampled funk & soul first half this still glowing from the sunshine Thursday night. For those just now getting with the program maybe for the first time, this is Danno in studio 2 GFN HQ, and we just rocked a trio of very new and recent joints to keep things summery during the nighttime. Thus, let’s explain ourselves as to what just happened and let you know a bit...
The Suffers – Don’t Bother Me (…now this is actually a tune we slept on from early April, which is the first single dropped from the band’s upcoming 3rd studio album due out June 3. It Starts With Love will drop then in full, so do keep an eye out The Suffers always have something interesting to share.)
Los Coming Soon – Coming to Light (…this is a music project out of the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires and despite the Los in the rather cheeky moniker, this is the solo project of Patricio Hirsch. Now according to social media, Hirsch is now based in Barcelona, and this is the artist’s 2nd single of the year thus far after Sunshine dropped in March.)
Roosevelt feat Nile Rodgers – Passion (…you could just take a listen to that guitar lick on this tune and know exactly who it was doing the damage, as this is just a trademark cut for the funk guitar veteran. The song itself is a collaborative effort paying homage to Studio 54, and Roosevelt is out of Germany and currently on tour if you were not so initiated there, stating it was a huge honor to work on this track with Rodgers, a major influence on Roosevelt’s own sound.)
Okay, so I know we wanna just stay out here forever and just let the breezes go, but the clock is merciless and demands that we get in another joint before we hit the jump. To finish it’s another pair of legends as NYC veteran Danny Krivit just put out his own reinterpretation of Gwen McRae’s Move Me Baby, and that is both just about as funky as one can get and the final cut for here in part 1 this evening. This is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursdaze.
Gwen McRae – Move Me Baby (Danny Krivit edit)

II
The Drop returns and we have cold opened the 2nd can of our Sampled & AMPED 4 pack for tonight. Danno here, doing what I do, happy as ever to share new tunes with you this and any evening you care to join us whether on the radio or streaming later. We just opened with two new joints to begin the simmer and steam properly, so let’s get to the details ...
Notorious BIG feat Ty Dolla $ign & Bella Alubo – G.O.A.T. (…Biggy’s estate just released this very afrobeat inspired remix of this tune featuring Ty Dolla $ign on the raps and beats along with Nigeria’s Bella Alubo. For those keeping score, the original of this cut came out on Biggy’s Life After Death album, released 16 days after Big’s death in 1997.)
El Michels Affair feat Piya Malik – Kahbi (…two artists that really seem to click and both obviously hugely inspired by the hip-hop percussion sound are these two. For those not aware, Leon Michels is the main man behind Big Crown Records and Piya Malik is also doing the thing with a group called Say She She, which features on Colemine Records as well.)

So moving ahead, we have a quartet of old school reggae roots cuts to play in honor of one of our favorites Desmond Dekker this evening, but we’ll talk about the history involved later on. Up next we have Jackie Mittoo, the aforementioned Dekker and his Aces along with Junior Murvin and Sister Nancy, but for now it’s time to dub it. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday.
___
Final airbreak of the first half here on The Drop and we have reached the final audio lengths here in part 2 before Dan Lloyd comes in and crushes it with our weekly AMPED rock feature. Danno here once again my friends, and we just went with some roots and dub for that last block with a rare old school quartet, so let’s get down to business on those slow moving travelers…
Jackie Mittoo – Summer Breeze (…a little cover of the Seals and Crofts original right there. For those unaware, Mittoo was the man on the keys at Studio 1 for years and years, making him an extremely influential personality on the early history of reggae and dub in Jamaica.)
Desmond Dekker & The Aces – Beautiful & Dangerous (…another very powerful voice and influence in the history of early reggae. The first man to go to #1 outside of Jamaica and the guy who brought Bob Marley into a label properly, Dekker unfortunately passed away on this date in 2006 from a heart attack, may he rest in power and we dedicate this last block to Dekker. Rest in power.)
Junior Murvin – Roots Train (…this one appeared on the legendary 1977 Police & Thieves in 1977. Of course, that album would become hugely influential all over the world after The Clash released it later as a rock tune, but Murvin never had a lot of success during his life outside of his home country.)
Sister Nancy – Transport Connection (…another trailblazer in dancehall and reggae history, Nancy was not only a huge vocalist in her time but also Jamaica’s first reggae and dancehall DJ with a wide following on the scene, being a dominating voice in her time. Which is still not up as Nancy just turned 60 this year.)
Alright, so that’s gonna just about do it for our funky first hour, but we have another tune featuring the boss herself Diana Ross and Tame Impala teaming up on a new joint that is just too perfect to not play on this day called Turn Up The Sunshine. This tune is the lead single to the disco-inspired soundtrack to Minions: The Rise of Guru, and that lands in theaters on July 1 so do note if you like the little yellow men. THIS is The Drop and that’s a wrap on the first half.
Diana Ross feat Tame Impala – Turn Up the Sunshine

III & IV AMPED

Coheed and Cambria – Comatose
Liam Gallagher – C’mon you Know
Suede – She Still Leads Me
TV Priest – It Was Beautiful
Kiwi Jr. – Night Vision

SACK – Wet Banana
Pool Kids – That’s Physics, Baby
Ginger Wildheart and the Sinners – Wasted Times
Def Leppard – Fire It Up
Marcus King – Rescue Me
The Wonder Years – Summer Clothes

Coheed and Cambria – Comatose
US prog rockers Coheed And Cambria have shared a lyric video for brand new track Comatose. It's taken from the band's upcoming album, Vaxis II: A Window Of The Waking Mind, which is released through Roadrunner Records on May 27.
"The song is about folding to pressure and wanting to ‘dip out’ when met with a stressful situation," the band explain.
New album Vaxis II: A Window of the Waking Mind sees a return to mainman Claudio Sanchez's The Amory Wars concept, and is the second instalment of a five-part arc about a couple on the run from tyrannical forces and their mysterious new addition. The album is a follow-up to 2018's Vaxis – Act I: The Unheavenly Creatures.
Coheed And Cambria have previously released videos for Shoulders, Rise, Naianasha (Cut The Cord) and The Liars Club and recently released a cover of the Kiss song Love Gun. The band's North American tour kicks off in July.

Liam Gallagher – C’mon you Know
Title track from his third album (out tomorrow). Everything’s been decidedly bland so far, so I’m not getting my hopes up. Check this story out though:
Noel Gallagher was left covered in blood after he was headbutted by Rúben Dias' dad following Premier League title celebrations on Sunday.
The former Oasis singer, 54, needed stitches after the Man City match against Aston Villa at The Etihad stadium in Manchester.
The epic 3-2 win sparked major celebrations in the stalls as Man City fans erupted into cheer - but things went sour for singer Noel when he collided with Dias' dad.
Lifting the lid on the accident, Noel told talkSPORT Breakfast on Monday that an ambulance was called for him after he was headbutted by Dias' father.
"Let me tell you what happened to me yesterday. So as the third goal goes in, right, there is absolute bedlam," he told talkSPORT.
"As you can imagine, in the stadium where we sit, Reuben Diaz's family are in the box, a couple of boxes up.
"So I'm jumping around like an idiot, passing my 11-year-old son around like the Premier League trophy, everyone is lifting him up, and I turn around and Rúben Dias' dad runs straight into me, head butts me while I'm on the floor covered in blood."
Noel went on to admit that he missed out on the last couple of minutes of the match after being headbutted as an ambulance was called before he had to have stitches put into his upper lip.

Suede – She Still Leads Me
Britpop greats Suede are back with a new album, Autofiction, which will be out September 16 via BMG. Their fourth full-length since reforming in 2010, the album finds Brett Anderson, Mat Osman, Simon Gilbert, Richard Oakes and Neil Codling working once again with producer Ed Buller, who has been behind the boards for all but one of their albums. It also has the band getting back to basics "Autofiction is our punk record. No whistles and bells," says Anderson. "Just the five of us in a room with all the glitches and fuck-ups revealed; the band themselves exposed in all their primal mess."
The first single from the album is "She Still Leads Me On," an anthemic rocker that has Suede's trademark glammy grandeur all over it.

TV Priest – It Was Beautiful
With their new album ‘My Other People’ set for release on 17th June via Sub Pop Records, TV Priest are sharing new track ‘It Was Beautiful’.
‘It Was Beautiful’ is a love song about the past, present, and future. A reminder that love is the most essential thing,” vocalist Charlie Drinkwater explains. “The words came fast; it was recorded in a single emotive session, the first song we wrote together after my family had gone through a difficult experience and I think you can hear that in the kind of melancholy euphoria that plays out as the song progresses. In some ways it’s a coda to the whole album; a reminder to guard your hope fiercely.”

Kiwi Jr. – Night Vision
Toronto indie-rockers Kiwi Jr. have announced their third album, Chopper, out August 12 via Sub Pop. Produced by Wolf Parade cofounder and current Arcade Fire member Dan Boeckner, Chopper has a chilly, post-punk-leaning lead single, “Night Vision,” which also gets the video treatment directed by previous collaborator Laura-Lynn Petrick.
“Before ‘Night Vision’ was 100% written, just the basic idea of it existing as a Kiwi Jr. song inspired us and set the tone for the record,” frontman Jeremy Gaudet says. “A lot of the images in the lyrics are of teenagers driving around, trying to make plans, sharing the aux, putting their parents’ car in the ditch, etc. But the idea at the center of the song is that of working up the nerve to make a big decision. Like a boxer getting pumped up before a fight.”

SACK – Wet Banana
SACK are a "mysterious" punk band from Denver, but they've got some famous rotating members, and for their upcoming album Ripper!, lead vocals are handled by Kody Templeman of The Lillingtons and Teenage Bottlerocket (who goes by Bruzzy in this band). The album comes out June 10 via Red Scare Industries (pre-order), and we're premiering the video for "Wet Banana." Here's what Kody I mean Bruzzy says about it: "My Uncle Bill died as a result of a Wet Banana accident. We're trying to raise awareness about this dangerous pastime."
It might sound a little silly on paper, but this song is no joke. It's a super fun, revved-up punk ripper in the same spirit as The Lillingtons and Teenage Bottlerocket and other catchy, no-frills punk bands, and if that's your kinda thing, you should not miss out on this one.

Pool Kids – That’s Physics, Baby
Florida emo band Pool Kids have announced a self-titled sophomore album, the followup to their 2018 debut LP Music To Practice Safe Sex To, due July 22 via Skeletal Lightning (pre-order). The album was produced by Mike Vernon Davis (Great Grandpa, Special Explosion), and first single "That's Physics, Baby" opens up with knotty Midwest emo riffage, but this is not scrappy and shambolic in the way "Midwest emo" usually is. It's got crystal-clear production, and there's a powerhouse pop quality to singer Christine Goodwyne's voice.

Ginger Wildheart and the Sinners – Wasted Times
Wicked CoolRecords are proud to announce the release of ‘Wasted Times’ the debut single by Ginger Wildheart & The Sinners.
“Wasted Times is pure rock n roll, peppered with country touches, while the lyrics have an honesty traditionally found in folk music and It’s just a good time song played by a killer band,” exclaims Ginger Widlheart.

Ginger Wildheart & The Sinners were formed in August 2019 when Ginger joined forces with Neil Ivison and Nick Lyndon from the band Stone Mountain Sinners. The lineup was completed with drummer Shane Dixon (Tri-City Fanfare) and as Ginger explains “I actually met the band at the studio where we recorded the debut album. We hadn’t even rehearsed prior to setting up in the live room of the studio. Wasted Times was the first song we played together.”
Wasted Times is taken from their forthcoming album recorded at Mwnci studios in Pembrokeshire, Wales, with Dave Draper producing.

Def Leppard – Fire It Up
DEF LEPPARD's new single, "Fire It Up", is out now. It is the third single from the band's upcoming album, "Diamond Star Halos", which will arrive on May 27 via UMe. The follow-up to 2015's self-titled LP is available for pre-order now in multiple configurations, including a deluxe edition, 2-LP vinyl, digital formats and more. Exclusive bundles including newly designed album merch have also launched.
In a recent interview with Germany's Rockland Radio, DEF LEPPARD singer Joe Elliott was asked why fans of his band should listen to "Diamond Star Halos". He responded: "If you're a DEF LEPPARD fan, I would imagine there's always a need to listen to some new music, because as much as it's great to have this massive back catalog of music, new music is what keeps a band alive, so we wanna share that with our fans.
"Why would they wanna listen to it?" he continued. "Well, I believe that this is a career-defining album. For a band that's been around now for 45 years, to make an album that's this strong, I believe, at this point of our career is actually quite an achievement.

Marcus King – Rescue Me
Marcus King has dropped Rescue Me, the latest single to be taken from his upcoming studio album, Young Blood.
While it employs a similar dose of electric guitar ear candy as found on the album’s lead single, Hard Working Man, King dials down the tempo for a more swaggering entry to the Young Blood tracklist, with Rescue Me serving up smoldering six-string progressions and a bubbly open-string verse riff.
Unsurprisingly, there are a few gnarly guitar solos thrown into the mix too, which see King sport a slide and later introduce a wah pedal for a raucous rally of blistering blues notes.
Like El Dorado, Young Blood – which was recorded entirely in live takes – was produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auberbach, who said of King, “He's the real deal. Marcus has Southern soul as part of his foundation.
Of the record, Auberbach added, “These songs are live performances. The whole damn thing is live – the solos and everything.”
Young Blood is available to preorder now ahead of its release on August 26 via American Records/Republic/Snakefarm

The Wonder Years – Summer Clothes
Last month, The Wonder Years confirmed that their first album in four years would be arriving this year, and they shared the excellent lead single "Oldest Daughter," which reunited them with longtime producer Steve Evetts and which we named one of the best punk songs of April. Still no word on title or release date, but they did just release a second single, "Summer Clothes." This one was produced by Will Yip and it shows off a softer side of the band, with acoustic guitars and slower tempos, and it also employs a post-rocky buildup that explodes by the song's end.
"It’s a love letter to a time when your sadness was most conspicuous by its momentary absence, when the low hum quieted enough for you to realize it was nearly gone, when you did stupid, dangerous shit because, well, why not?," the band says. Frontman Dan Campbell adds, "It’s a song that tumbled out of me all at once. Like it had been trying to escape for a long time."
