Mind Soul Journeys

In this deeply personal episode, Jody Colvard shares her experience of surviving the devastating Paradise Camp Fire; one of the deadliest wildfires in California’s history. But this story isn’t only about loss; it’s about what came after.

Through heartbreak and bewildering shifts in time, Jody explores how trauma can fracture our perception of reality and open gateways to transformation. This is a story of loss and awakening, of what happens when time itself bends and we’re left standing between worlds, searching for meaning in the seams of existence.

Jody:

Welcome to mind soul journeys, a space where the mysteries of the mind and the whispers of the soul meet. I'm your host, Jodi Colvard. Let's begin this journey together. This episode is unlike any other. It's about a shift, a

Jody:

collapse of timelines, a moment where reality splintered and left me questioning everything I knew. Today, we dive into a personal experience, an event so profound that it changed the very fabric of my reality. It was 11/07/2018. My dear friend and I were in Las Vegas attending a Cher concert. I don't usually make plans in the summer living in

Jody:

a fire zone in California,

Jody:

but this was November. It was supposed to be calm. Fire season was over.

Jody:

The next day, on the morning of November 8, I was in my hotel room,

Jody:

and the phone rang. It was my son. He said, mom, there's

Jody:

a massive fire in Paradise. They're evacuating everyone. You need to get home. It's really bad.

Jody:

I felt a chill as I hung up the phone. I immediately called my other half, Declan. Get home quickly, I told him. He was in a meeting outside the canyon where we lived, just below Paradise. It was November after all.

Jody:

It was supposed to be safe to go out for an hour or two. By the time he tried to return home, the roads were blocked. The canyon was trapped.

Jody:

I called the airlines hoping for an earlier flight home. As I scrambled to

Jody:

get to the airport, chaos erupted. Sirens blared in the hotel. The air was thick with tension. At the airport, the security scanners went down. There were dogs, over a dozen German shepherds.

Jody:

They were sniffing a crowd as we waited. It was a surreal moment, like the world had suddenly tilted. On the plane, I sat silently crying, hearing the passengers talk about the fire consuming my town. I didn't know if my family, my home, my fur babies, if they were safe. The flight was long.

Jody:

When I landed, I rushed to rent a car. As I sped down the freeway, the traffic heading in the opposite direction was endless. People were fleeing, but my section of the

Jody:

road was empty. As I got closer to the canyon, the sky darkened. It wasn't even 1PM yet, and it was pitch black. I could see it, a massive wave of flame reaching miles into the sky, devouring everything in its path.

Jody:

The heat hit me even before I saw the fire. My heart pounded. I couldn't stop. I had to keep going. I needed to get home.

Jody:

I tried to bypass the roadblock hoping for some way in, but the fire was too close. My only choice was to turn around and hike in. That's when I saw him, Declan. He was walking through the smoke towards me. He was alive, but the fire had surrounded him, and he barely escaped.

Jody:

Together, we sat in the car, helpless, as we watched our world burn. I was hoping against hope that somehow our home and our babies had made it out. The next two days were a blur. The roads were closed. No one could get in.

Jody:

The sky was gray. There was no color anywhere. The waiting felt eternal. It was only on the third morning, while we were waiting outside the canyon, that

Jody:

a PG and E driver agreed to check on our house. I asked him, please check on our babies and ask our neighbor to feed them, and please let him know that there is food in the house for him as well.

Jody:

He returned about a half an hour later. When I saw him coming, I could already tell by his face.

Jody:

He didn't need to speak.

Jody:

I knew. Everything was gone. Our babies, our house, our neighbor, they were all gone. At that moment, my heart sunk. I ran.

Jody:

I ran as fast as I could,

Jody:

trying to escape, trying to outrun this new reality. It was just too much. The grief was unbearable. As the days move forward, after searching all the shelters for our babies, trying to

Jody:

get a grasp on this new version of my life, I began to notice things were, well, they fell off. I felt like I had stepped into a parallel universe. Events had changed. People that I remember dying were alive. History was different.

Jody:

The world had shifted. We had slipped. Our timeline had collapsed, and with it, the world we once knew. What happened next wasn't just about grief. It was about transformation.

Jody:

A shift in frequency so intense that we couldn't see the world the same way anymore. We were lost in the seams of time, living in a world that no longer made sense. When the veil thins

Jody:

through meditation, trauma, or joy, sometimes we slip. We don't always know how or why, But when we do, we enter a space where everything is different. Nothing is as it was. This was my story of that shift. The collapse of time and the collapse of reality.

Jody:

But it's not the end. It's just another part of the journey. A journey through the spaces between worlds and the endless possibilities that await on the other side. Thank you for traveling with me on mind soul journeys. Until next time, may your path be guided by love, light, and the wisdom of your soul.
