Welcome to The Sports Hangover Daily, I'm Sadie. Today: Lamar Jackson is out for Baltimore, the Eagles are running out of receivers before Dallas, Jokic dragged Denver out of a ditch, and Chiefs-Seahawks has brand-name tax all over it.
The biggest football news this morning: Lamar Jackson is officially out against Cincinnati. Not questionable. Not “watch warmups.” Out. Ankle injury. Tyler Huntley gets another start for Baltimore, and Bengals-Ravens feels totally different now.
That injury hits everything. Real football, fantasy, the number. With Lamar, Baltimore can look messy and still scare you. A busted third-and-seven turns into a first down because Lamar turns the sideline into a panic room. Without him, the whole operation has to be cleaner. The protection. The timing. Receivers winning on schedule. That’s a lot to ask from a team already dealing with plenty.
For fantasy, Mark Andrews and Zay Flowers still matter on volume. You’re not benching good players just because the quarterback changed. But the ceiling drops. Touchdown chances drop. The cheap explosive play drops. Huntley can function. He just doesn’t make defenses throw out the rulebook the way Lamar does.
And on the board, any Bengals-Ravens number that still treated Lamar like “maybe he plays” is stale. This isn’t a cute injury note. It’s the difference between Baltimore being Baltimore and Baltimore trying to survive with the training wheels half-clicked on.
Around the league, the Eagles’ Monday night passing game is getting thin fast. DeVonta Smith is out with a hamstring injury after missing practice all week. Dontayvion Wicks is out too. So now it’s Makai Lemon, Darius Cooper, Hollywood Brown, and Dallas Goedert catching passes from Tanner McKee against Dallas. Goedert gets the fantasy bump, especially over the middle. But come on. Backup quarterback, missing receivers, division game. That’s not a ceiling spot. That’s “please give me seven catches and don’t wreck my week.”
The Sunday night stress test is Chiefs at Seahawks, which is hilarious if you like staring at a board and muttering. Kansas City still gets brand pricing because it’s Kansas City. People see the helmet, the quarterback, the old playoff memories, and they pay the tax. Seattle at home is the spot where I’d circle the weird number. No guarantee. No sermon. Just watch if the market prices reputation like it’s current form.
Basketball gave us the drunkest box score of the night. Nuggets one forty-one, Pelicans one thirty-five in overtime. Denver came back from down twenty-three. Nikola Jokic had thirty-five points, fifteen rebounds, and ten assists, then scored eight in overtime. Jamal Murray added forty-two. That is stupid. New Orleans had the game, and Denver basically said, cute, now try guarding the two guys who make your defensive plan look like a group project nobody opened.
Charlotte beat Miami one fifteen to one ten, and Brandon Miller dropped thirty-four. The Hornets are two and one. The Heat are oh and three. I know it’s early, but oh and three for a team people still talk about like it has automatic adult-in-the-room powers? Annoying fast. Miami doesn’t need panic yet. It does need a win before the vibes start smelling like old coffee.
In hockey, Toronto smoked Edmonton seven to two. Anthony Stolarz made thirty saves, and the Leafs moved to seven, four, and two. Any time a Canadian matchup gets that lopsided, half the country turns into a radio call-in show by breakfast.
Ottawa also hung seven on the Rangers in a seven to four win. The Senators are eight and four. The Rangers fell to seven, five, and one. That score looks like someone left the goalie settings on arcade mode, but Ottawa will take every bit of it.
The Hangover Take: Seattle beats Kansas City tonight.
There. Simple. The Chiefs are still being priced like every uncomfortable road game is secretly a Mahomes comeback montage waiting to happen. I don’t buy that version today.
Seattle at home is not some polite little stopover. That building gets loud, the pass rush feeds off it, and if Kansas City has to play clean for four quarters, I don’t love that ask. The Chiefs can be dangerous without being automatic. Those are different things, and the market mixes them up all the time.
This is the game where public memory gets expensive. People remember the playoff runs. They remember the no-panic mode. They remember the helmet. Sunday night road spots do not care about your nostalgia.
Seattle is live. More than live. I think they win the thing outright, and tomorrow everyone acts like the warning signs were obvious.
That's your hangover. Go hydrate. I'll see you tomorrow.
